A House Divided

by Kimberla Lawson Roby

Kimberla Lawson Roby New York Times Bestselling Author/NAACP

Image Award Winner Celebrates Milestone in Hit Series!

A little more than a decade since she first introduced readers to the infamous

Reverend Curtis Black, New York Times bestselling author Kimberla Lawson

Roby returns with the release of her 10th installment in the popular series. A House

Divided marks the 19th title for the NAACP Image Award winner who has published

18 books with more than 2,000,000 million copies in print.

In A HOUSE DIVIDED, life is close to perfect for Charlotte and Curtis Black —

except that their son Matthew's girlfriend, Racquel, is eight months pregnant and

Racquel's mother, Vanessa, and Charlotte can barely stand the sight of each other.

On the day of Racquel's baby shower, Charlotte and Vanessa have a major blowup and

the stress sends Racquel into early labor. Curtis is displeased with Charlotte's behavior, something that slowly but surely drives a

new wedge between them. At the same time, Curtis is consumed with church business and trying to uncover who is behind a

series of mysterious letters that threaten to expose his biggest secret. Increasingly furious with his mother, Matthew gives

Charlotte an ultimatum — treat Racquel and her mom with respect or she'll be cut off from seeing the baby altogether. This sends

Charlotte down a road of revenge. Once again, the Black household is torn apart, and it will take a miracle for anyone to recover.

The Reverend Curtis Black saga that shines a spotlight on corruption in the church began in 2000 with the release of

CASTING THE FIRST STONE. At the time, Roby had no plans for a series, but over the years readers have shown they can’t get

enough of the pastor and his family. “What readers have shared is that they wanted to see more and more of Curtis and his family

because they could relate to the storyline surrounding a pastor, his wife and problems in the church,” says Roby. “When I would

ask say a room of 100 attendees if they wanted to read more about Curtis and his family, literally 95 to 98 hands would go up.”

BPM: What topics does your latest Curtis Black book address? Why?

A House Divided addresses the subject of mothers and the struggle some tend to

have when it comes to allowing an adult child to make his or her own decisions and mistakes. It also focuses on what can happen

to a family when a parent tries to control an adult child and force him or her to do only what they want them to do--which is what

Charlotte Black does to Matthew in the worst possible way. I can't imagine what it must feel like having a controlling mother or

father, but the reason I wanted to write about this topic is because, unfortunately, I do know a number of adult children who have

distanced themselves from their parents for this very reason.

BPM: You believe strongly in: I believe strongly in God, myself, and family values.

BPM: You are humbled by: I am deeply humbled by God and by my amazing readers.

BPM: Faith allows you to: Faith allows me to do things I never thought imaginable or things I thought I would never have

the courage to even try to do. So for years now, my motto in life has been to: "Believe in God, believe in yourself, and believe in

whatever it is you are trying to accomplish---believe in that order."

BPM: When you are afraid, you will: When I am afraid or worried about anything, I pray, pray, pray until God removes

the spirit of fear and worry from me completely.

BPM: What have you learned from your readers: What I have learned from my readers is that even when people have

never met you, they can still be some of the kindest and most loyal people in the world. My readers are absolutely the best, and

they are the reason I am able to have a writing career.

figuratively. Although she's trying to reconcile with her husband, Pee Wee,

she's still seeing other men on the side. A woman's got to cover her bases,

right? With her love life hopping, Annette should be as pleased as punch.

Instead, the stress has her eating everything in sight and packing on the

pounds along the way.

Meanwhile, Annette's best friend, Rhoda O'Toole, has her hands full--as

usual--dealing with her wild child daughter. Jade has always been a cross to

bear, but when her antics almost cost Rhoda her man, Rhoda throws Jade out

on the street. But Jade soon finds a way to make Rhoda regret her choice.

Mama Ruby by Mary Monroe

If you are a fan of Toni Morrison and Zora Neale Hurston, you will love

Mama Ruby and the writings of Mary Monroe!

New York Times bestselling author Mary Monroe presents an unforgettable tale

featuring Mama Ruby, the indomitable heroine of her acclaimed novel The Upper

Room. Now readers will get a peek into Ruby’s early years, as she transforms from

a spoiled small-town girl into one of the South’s most notorious and volatile

women…

Growing up in Shreveport, Louisiana, Ruby Jean Upshaw is the kind of girl who

knows what she wants and knows how to get it. By the time she’s fifteen, Ruby has

developed a taste for fast men and cheap liquor, and not even her preacher daddy

can set her straight. Most everyone in the neighborhood knows you don’t cross Ruby.

When Ruby discovers she’s in the family way, she’s scared for the first time in her

life. Ruby secretly gives birth to a baby girl at

Othella’s house. With few choices, Othella

talks Ruby into giving the child away and with the help of a shocking revelation, convinces

Ruby to run off with her to New Orleans. Read an excerpt here.

Lost Daughters by Mary Monroe

“Lost Daughters will be an intriguing (but fun) read for a variety of reasons. The

betrayals and secrets will provoke some sadness, anger, a lot of heading shaking

comments and some humor. Despite the fact that there is an abundance of deceptions

throughout the story, there will be a lot of joy and triumph in the end for the main

characters.” — Mary Monroe

New York Times bestselling author Mary Monroe brings to life her most provocative

and daring characters yet in this emotional and sometimes shocking tale of daughters

lost and found, and the ways in which the past still haunts them.

After years of living under Mama Ruby’s commanding presence, Maureen

Montgomery is finally taking charge of her own life. With her beautiful teenage

daughter, Loretta, by her side, she returns to Florida after Mama Ruby’s death and

settles into a routine that any other woman would consider bland. But for Maureen

and her older brother Virgil, who grew up with Mama Ruby’s hair-trigger temper and

murderous ways, bland is good.

But Loretta has other ideas. Set on becoming rich and famous, she convinces Maureen to let her start a modeling career. And

Loretta thinks Miami photographer Melvin Ross is just the man to make her a star. But even with Mel by their side, taking

Maureen and Loretta’s lives in new directions, they can’t escape Mama Ruby. Neither can Virgil, who’s concealed one of Mama

Ruby’s most shocking acts for most of his life…and is now living with the guilt of his deceit.

Yet, as much as Virgil knows, he could never imagine the depth of Mama Ruby’s yearning for her daughter, or how much

Maureen wants her own daughter to feel free to live on her own terms. For them, Mama Ruby will never die…and it’s not until

Maureen takes on a bit of Mama Ruby’s strength to face down the past and forge new bonds that she’s able to make a future that

is truly hers.

Your Legacy is a Gift to Earth with Everlasting Memories

by Brenda Johnson Padgitt

What do you want people to remember about you? What kind of impact do

you want to have for years to come? When you use your gifts and talents to serve

others you are building relationships. Relationships involve people caring about

others. People will remember you for your gifts, talents, ideas, inventions, services or

products you offered.

Legacy according to the Random House College Dictionary is anything handed down

from the past, as from an ancestor or predecessor. Legacy could also be personal

property, money, laws, customs and traditions. Many people feel it is an honor to

continue the legacies passed down from their ancestors. It is important to leave

something of value that will continue to benefit others after you expire from Earth.

Your legacy will be the remnant that remains of you in the Earth.

When you leave a legacy it shows your accomplishments during your lifetime. It gives a snap shot of your goals,

interests, talents and abilities. Your legacy shows what was dear to your heart while you lived on Earth. It shows what you were

passionate about. Your legacy to Earth is usually a continuation of what people enjoyed while you lived. People continue to

benefit from what you offered to Planet Earth.

Today we continue to benefit from the legacies of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for his activism, ideas, speeches and marches to

help in the Civil Rights Movement. Madame C. J. Walker left a legacy of the power of entrepreneurship. She is listed in the

Guinness Book of Records as the first female of any race to become a self made millionaire. Today we continue to enjoy the rags

to riches story told about her life and the hair care products she manufactured.

According to Wikipedia.com, Karl Benz invented the first modern automobile in 1885. Henry Ford is remembered for

maximizing on the assembly line technique in 1914. He manufactured the first affordable automobile called the Ford Model T in

1927. The invention of the modern automobile is still a major necessity in the United States and other countries around the world.

You can also leave a legacy of a good reputation that is associated with your name. According to the Bible in

Proverbs 22:1, a good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold. Martin Luther

King Jr. is remembered also for his good name. He promoted and modeled peaceful demonstrations during the Civil Rights

Movement. He also won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

Planning, preparing and building your dreams goes hand in hand with your legacy. Whatever you build successfully

remains in the Earth when you expire. The business and profits you leave can be passed down to your children, family members

or friends. Before you expire communicate to your family members how you want your legacy to continue. You can also re-

communicate this in your Will. It is up to you to plan what you will leave and to whom. Your legacy will have everlasting

memories from generation to generation. Your talents, gifts, ideas, inventions, services or products will continue to be used and

appreciated by many.

What Will Your Legacy Be?

A good man . . . leaves an inheritance -- Proverbs 13:22 (NIV)

Each life touches other lives in seen and unseen ways. You don't necessarily have to know

somebody in order to experience the blessings of their legacy. Like walking into an empty room and

catching a whiff of somebody's perfume, your influence can continue long after you're gone. Usually,

we don't like to think about this, because: 1) we associate legacies with dying, and we don't particularly

enjoy thinking about that topic; 2) we assume that since our legacy won't be revealed for years, we

don't need to start investing now; and 3) we feel as if we've little or no control over what we leave

behind any how.

The Bible says, 'A good man . . . leaves an inheritance . . .' So what will yours be? More

important -what is it going to cost? If you just want to leave material things, that's easy. Work hard,

invest wisely and build your net worth. But since the best gifts aren't always handed down in your will,

why not leave something more meaningful - something that points to who you were?

It's one thing to measure your success by the money in your bank account, the size of your estate

holdings, or the value of your stock portfolio. It's entirely another to measure it by intangibles like

being a faithful, loving spouse, raising godly children, being a spiritual mentor and leaving the lights on

when you go! All great legacies come with a price tag. To move beyond mediocrity, you must invest

every day in the invisible accounts of those who follow you!

Have you considered your legacy lately? Are there certain tangible and intangible items that

you'd like to pass on to loved ones and the world? Have you prayerfully identified those items and

began to live accordingly? Alternatively, have you doggedly avoided this area of life? Does it seem too

far away to address when daily living consumes your energy and attention? Do you believe that you

have very little or nothing to leave behind whether tangible or intangible?

Saints, we are able to leave a tremendous legacy for our loved ones, Christian community, and the

world at large. Although we may believe that legacies are for loftier and more successful individuals,

God has placed the keys to leaving godly treasures behind within each of us. Material items are a

blessing to leave for those you love but a legacy of love, hope, and faith is far more valuable. Let's pray

and meditate on the legacy that we desire to leave behind and get started living it today.

Your Sister in Christ,

Rugina

Falling In The Deep

by Patricia Anne Phillips

Falling In The Deep is a novel that gives the true meaning of rivalry, betrayal and

deception, and no meaning at all for marriage vows, such as . . . through sickness and

health.

Falling In The Deep is a gripping, hurtful story of a woman diagnosed with Multiple

Sclerosis (MS). Readers will feel her pain and wonder about the true meaning of their

own marriage vows. Also, it will give readers awareness of MS and the symptoms.

The story takes place in Mill Valley, a middle class neighborhood near the San

Francisco Golden Gate Bridge. Sabrina Chapman had the perfect life, a loving

husband and two adoring children. She was happy, living the life she always wanted

and deeply in love with her husband, or so she thought until she was diagnosed with

MS, and the essence of life she once taken for granted no longer existed.

Jason Chapman is disappointed with the news of his wife health; it was no longer

the life they had planned. Why should he stay in a marriage that he didn’t ask for? After all he wasn’t the one with MS? He wanted

to make career moves, and have a healthy, beautiful wife by his side.

In Falling In The Deep, readers will cry, laugh and follow one woman’s life of bravery, as she forges ahead to

make a life for her and her two children, and with the help of someone that see’s her as the beautiful, smart

woman she always was.

The Red Order is able to develop its gifts far beyond the capacity to see the future, honing their skills to become the ultimate

t h r e a t a g a i n s t t h e L o s t S e e r s . B ut t h e q u e s t i o n r e m a i n s

– will the power of The Red Order be enough to defeat them?

Page 17: Black Pearls Magazine BEA Author Gift Book

Intimate Conversation with Cerece Rennie Murphy

Cerece Rennie Murphy lives and writes just outside of her hometown of

Washington, DC. In addition to completing the Order of the Seers trilogy,

Ms. Murphy is also developing a children’s book series titled Enchanted: 5

Tales of Magic in the Everyday and a book on understanding marriage/

relationship advice for single women entitled More than the Ring.

BPM: When did you get your first inkling to write science fiction/

speculative fiction, and how did you advance the call for writing

in this genre?

I am as surprised as anyone that I am a sci-fi/speculative fiction writer.

I have loved the genre from since I was a little girl watching Star Wars on the

big screen, but I never thought I could be a writer, much less a science fiction writer. But one day, while washing the dishes I got

this vision of a man walking towards me. He had a cataract-like film over his eyes with ash blonde hair and dark skin.

Immediately, I knew his name was Marcus and that he was a Seer. Literally within minutes I had this whole world running

through my mind and I just knew I wouldn’t let it go. I didn’t even know if I could write the story that was in my head, but I never

doubted that I would try. To me, the story of the Seers is a gift. One I am privileged to tell.

As far as advancing the call for writing in this genre, I don’t know that I have done that. There are a ton of talented authors in this

genre and I am happy to be among them. But if seeing my work and hearing my story can convince someone who is wavering in

their own desire to write to jump in the ring then I am even more honored to be in the position that I am.

BPM: Introduce us to the Order of the Seers Trilogy.

The first book in the Order of the Seers trilogy is about a group of people who can see the future and are enslaved for that

ability. The story takes you on the journey of how they escape the organization that seeks to exploit them, regain their strength

and ultimately fight back. The characters in Order of the Seers are struggling to understand who they are given the

extraordinary gifts and situations that they have been forced into. And you see them make some incredible discoveries about life

and love as they grow to accept themselves and their abilities. With the sequel, The Red Order, they take that knowledge

further. Now that they understand who they are, the Seers really show you what they can do with that awareness.

BPM: Which character or topic in the book can you identify with the most? Why?

I think at its core, these books are about discovering and realizing your own potential and it’s interesting because I didn’t know

that when I started writing the books. It was only later that I could see my own struggle to understand myself written between

the lines of the page. I think all of us are told who we are - by our parents, our bosses, our communities. Sometimes those

opinions are right, but not often. I think it is our work as human beings to find out who we truly are and distinguish between our

true selves and who people say we are. Often we are limited by other people’s perceptions of us.

Land of Promiscuity by Sherryle Kiser Jackson

Ever since high school, Rebecca Lucas has not led a discreet lifestyle. She has grown

accustomed to using her body as a bargaining tool. Although more than a few men have

known her physically, only one man has dared to love her as a true friend. Now Rebi

must return to her hometown after her mother's death to face that man.

William Donovan is now the assistant pastor of Grace Apostle Methodist

Church, adjacent to her family's home estate. He's devoted to helping Rebecca heal old

wounds and rediscover her passion when she returns home. As they are settling her

mother's estate, Rebi and William unearth a generational curse that threatens to

dismantle their carefully built love affair. Listen to the author reading, go here.

Path to Promise by Sherryle Kiser Jackson

There’s a difference between running scared and running free.

Rebecca Lucas is on the run again, running from rumors, running from reality, and

most of all, running from Will, her best friend and soul mate. This time Rebecca is ready

to reclaim the life she left behind in Salisbury before the burial of her mother and the

handling of her mother’s estate. Only to find that the time away has done little to alleviate

her biggest problem – her co-worker, Kenny Burke and the indecent proposal he

pitched to her before leaving town. She’s back, and he uses every resource at his disposal

to get her to go along with his plan.

Will Donovan, the man left in the trail of Rebecca’s taillights and exhaust fumes has a

few problems of his own. His father’s secrets have left the senior Pastor Donovan ousted

from his long time position as leader of Grace Apostle Methodist Church, and Will

with one foot in the door. As a mandate of the church board, Will must apply and

compete for his dad’s job. He ends up vying for that job along with the very charismatic

and well-connected heir of televangelist fame, Danny Glass Jr.

Will seems to be the only one questioning why his opponent is on his turf when he has his

own father to succeed and struggles with the integrity of his decisions in an effort to carve

out his own identity in ministry. For Will and Rebecca, the Path to Promise is far from a utopian street paved with gold. Will

their paths marred with their own obstacles cross and lead them to the promises of God?

The Prayer of Jabez: A Translation for Writers

by Sherryle Kiser Jackson

In 2008, I wrote an article titled, the Hezekiah Effect for Writers that spoke to

the specific span of time a writer has with each work to make an impact in the

marketplace. Four years later, I am persuaded as a Christian Writer or for

writers that happens to be Christian that our voice must be heard amongst and

in response to the rhetoric of the day. I’m thinking, Jabez, from 1st Chronicles

4:10, and his cry for blessings and increased exposure should similarly be the

prayer of an author preparing to launch a book, in my case, my fifth novel.

According the Bible, Jabez was birthed in pain. If an artist were to be

completely honest, it is the stress, the solitude, and yes, the pain likened to the

force of an oyster producing a pearl that produces the greatest work. As I think

of my novels, one was written while I was treading water as a middle school

teacher with limited resources and limited pay in an urban school system, and

most recently, the gestation of my latest novel went from its last trimester to

delivery in my son’s hospital room during his many repeated stays. Writing a

novel is laborious and requires, at least for me, a recovery period to get the

character and plotlines out of my system.

Success in the current publishing industry can be daunting. It is my prayer that my

readership grows with each title, for obvious reasons that book sales would translate to more

revenue, but also that my efforts and message would translate as well. Social media is great

but does not necessarily translate into more sales. Publishing provides a platform for a proverbial rocket ship to transcend time.

Just like any time machine movie worth its weight, whatever you carry with you, leave or bring back could alter the landscape. It

seems as if everyone can and are trying their hand at publishing. Just like finding your writing genre or niche, you’ve got to

examine your motives for writing to see how you stand out amongst the rest. That’s why in my maturity, I try to write with the

intention of being more poignant and substantive.

God’s Word translation records, Jabez prayed to the God of Israel, "Please bless me and give me more territory. May your power

be with me and free me from evil so that I will not be in pain." God gave him what he prayed for. Jabez’s name was recorded just

this one time in the Bible. In terms of the publishing industry he was a mid-list author, at the bottom of the roster or left to do it

on his own. He uttered this simple prayer for recognition out of the purest intentions. He prayed for power and that he would be

void of evils of his time, so that he would not suffer needlessly because of it.

Jabez reminds us God is still in the prayer answering business. He heard Jabez and answered him. It’s my prayer that

he also honors the work of my hands and increases my harvest to his satisfaction.

My Counterfeit Husband by Carla Pennington

Meet Author Carla Pennington

"In order to succeed in life, you have to get out of your own way. You can be your own

worst enemy and critic at times. Close your eyes, breathe then tell yourself that today is a

good day to be YOU." — Carla Pennington

At the age of 19, Carla was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). It has been a

slight struggle having the disease as an unwanted companion, but Carla delves through it.

Always a fighter, she refuses to allow the disease to halt her progress in life. When she is

not pleasing her readers, Carla is spending time with her three children whom she

cherishes dearly. Reading, writing and family time keeps her going. These three joys help

to keep her health under control as well.

When it comes to storytelling, Carla Pennington has a natural knack for the craft. Carla

found pleasure in reading at a very early age. Stories intrigued her and the writing bug

eventually stung her. She began journaling to escape life's challenges. Wanting to change

events in her life, she began writing poems that turned into short stories that turned into

full blown novels. Carla published her first novel, Fling, in 2005. That was just the

beginning of her blossoming career. Carla contributed one of her short stories, Cruisin', to

the 2008 African American Literary Award Winning Erotic Anthology Mocha Chocolate:

Taste a Piece of Ecstasy (ShaniBooks).

She also contributed her short story, Point and Click Lover, to the anthology's follow-up in 2010, Mocha Chocolate Remix:

Escapades of Passion (Nayberry Publications). Soaring on a wave of short story success, Carla contributed another story,

Deceitful Love, to Chocolat Historie D'Amour (LadyElle Publishing).

Not wanting to limit her love of writing to short stories only, in 2010, Carla joined forces with one of the most booming

independent publishing companies, Life Changing Books (LCB) where she released her anticipated novel, The Available Wife and

in 2011, its sequel The Available Wife 2. She's often been told that her novels read as though the reader is watching a movie.

Stepping out on faith, Carla self-published an erotic e-short "The Escort." Readers flocked to it causing Carla to supply the

demand of its sequel which is currently in the works.

Carla is currently involved in a number of other projects that include but not limited to working with Life Changing Books, Zane/

Strebor Books, Peace in the Storm Publishing, Nayberry Publications.

Book Review for “You’ve Been Fired! Now What?”

There is never an easy answer to someone's situation of unemployment, whether it is a termination or a lay off. There are plenty of

conditions to evaluate, and there is not a quick fix to anything. However, solutions are reached with commitment, dedication, knowledge,

hard work and consistent prayers. The content in this book encourages individuals to think and look forward. It is a great handbook for

startup businesses. Encouraging and empowering. It urges to look for opportunities and receive blessings while unemployed.

The material provides simple, basic and practical information that will change your outward position with your inward situation.

“Choices not circumstances, determine whether or not you succeed,” is a quote from the book to remember daily. The Good Book reveals

what the enemy has meant for bad, God will turn into good. Have faith, believe and move forward. — Melinda C. Sylvester, Owner
