Eastwood Family - With the “Thanksgiving” season behind us, I
want to say “Thank you, for Giving”. Your generosity in con-
tributing to our Bundle Up Bears winter clothing drive and Book
Bears book drive has been amazing! Our Eastwood families are

In order to teach our students more about the election process, Eastwood’s students voted in their very own
election, an election to choose a name for Eastwood’s mascot, the black bear. Each grade level held primary
elections to choose the name that they wanted on the final ballot. These are the names that were submitted
by each grade level:
Kindergarten…..Mountaineer Bear
1st Grade….Shadow
2nd Grade….Michael Recycle
3rd Grade….Beast of the East
4th Grade….Willow
5th Grade….Grizz
Each grade level had student representatives present their name selection at out October Eastwood Way
assembly. The students discussed the reasons that they felt their name should be chosen. The students hung
posters and flyers in the cafeteria and hallways, encouraging students to vote for certain names.
In the days leading up to Election Day, Eastwood’s students cast their votes, choosing from the nominated
names. Our third graders calculated the votes. And the winner was….WILLOW!
Our Eastwood black bear mascot will be named Willow.
Hang on to your hats! We have another month filled with student activities. Mrs. Antonini is heading up a Book Drive starting November 7th through November 18th. Please bring in new or gently used
books to be donated to our friends in southern West Virginia. These books should be school age ap-propriate. Starting Monday, November 7th, we will participate in the annual WCLG Holiday food Drive. Please send in non-perishable food items. This drive will end on Friday, December the 9th. The week of November 14th we will celebrate American Education Week. Students will participate in different activities throughout the week. On Monday, November 14th, the whole school will Drop everything
and read (D.E.A.R.). This will take place after our morning meetings and everyone in the building will have a chance to sit back, relax, and read a good book! Wednesday, November 16th, classes will
partner up with another class in the building and have a chance to buddy read with each other. This is a great opportunity for our students to read with classes they might not have much contact with. Then on Friday the 18th, students can dress like their favorite character. So put your thinking caps on and
start planning!
Dear Eastwood Parents,
Fourth grade is working on a project called “Global Web Designers” with a partner in a developing country. The students are learning about a country (Argentina, Nicaragua, Guatemala or Brazil) and collaborating with a student using the educational website Level Up Village. Their STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math-ematics and Arts) project has the purpose to raise social awareness about Global Warming. The students will be learning about different sources of energy (solar, wind, hydro and nuclear energy, coding (HMTL, CSS and Ja-vaScript basics), web design, team work and developing global competence skills.
I would like to take this to opportunity to thank Mrs. Karen Davis and Mrs. Andrea Rush for their support in the fourth grade classrooms.

In the Spanish class, kindergarten is learning numbers, colors, days of the week and months of the year. First grade is reviewing calendar, colors and learning about monarch butterflies. Second grade is learning about pets, farm and wild animals from Costa Rica. Third and fifth grade are learning to retell the story “El bebé sucio” (The Dirty Baby).
November 1st and 2
nd are celebration days in Mexico. We remember and honor family members who
passed away. During “Dia de los muertos” (Day of the Dead), people celebrate the holidays by making special foods, dancing, playing music and making skeleton and skull crafts.

In 4th Grade Compacted Math, students held a mathematical debate. The
debate was based on “Which Multiplication Method is the Best?” Students
had the chance to select one of the seven methods that they learned and de-
bate why their particular method is the best. The class ended up dividing in-
to three debate groups-- Partial Products, Area Model, and Tens, Hundreds,
and Thousands. The students had to support their method with valid points.
They had 5 minutes to argue their pros and arguments against the methods.
We had four student judges to control the debate. It ended up being a great
math class full of a wonderful math discussion.
City of Morgantown
As a Partner in Education, the City of Morgantown supports Eastwood in so
many ways! Each month the mayor of Morgantown joins us for our East-
wood Way assembly to hand out monthly awards. They proudly display stu-
dent artwork in the City Hall lobby. The communications manager posts
Eastwood items of interest on the city website and on the government chan-
nel 15.
During Municipal Government Week, Oct.17-21, several city officials visited our school for read
aloud opportunities and career talks. Many of our older students wrote “If I Were Mayor” essays that
were read on live TV during the City Council meeting on Oct. 18. The essays will be on display in
the City Hall lobby.
We are so grateful for the continued support from our partnership with the City of Morgantown.
