Yoga Link – July 2015 3

From the editor Dear Members, This was to be my last edition of the Yoga Link; it turns out that it will be the penultimate one instead. We are nearing the first anniversary of Guruji’s death. The Executive Committee decided it would be appropriate to run a commemorative issue of the Link in September instead of the usual Link. It made sense that I stay on as editor for one more issue—the commemo-rative one—and then hand over to the new editor. I would like to make a request to any member who knew Mr Iyengar to please share with me any memories, vignettes, anecdotes, or stories you have of your encounters with Gu-ruji. I would like the next edition of the Link to be a truly Kiwi tribute to a great man. We had a few people interested in taking over the editorship of the yoga Link. The Execu-tive Committee thanks those who offered, for showing an interest in taking over this job. The new editor of the yoga Link will be Kathleen Powell, who I am sure is well known to most members as she was the editor once before. Thanks Kathleen for your offer to re-sume your duties as the Link Editor, and I am sure you’ll do a great job! I have thoroughly enjoyed my 3 years in this office. Admittedly, it has not always been easy: it is time freely given and sometimes had to take the back seat when other pressing engagements had to take priority; hence I was sometimes late in getting it out (as I am this edition too). Once I had mastered Publisher, I felt more settled as editor. There were the parts I disliked— time wasted queuing for boxes of franked envelopes, and stamps; and then the rush to get to the printer, carting boxes of Links upstairs and starting the long task of sealing hundreds of Links into envelopes and then licking countless stamps for the overseas ones. Once or twice I wished my kids were younger, and these tasks could be turned into a nice “game” for them to play; instead my ‘kids’ just look at me sym-pathetically and walk off. That’s all for this edition, I hope some of you manage to attend the AGM which will be in Wellington this year; I’ll be back in September with the commemorative edition of the Link. That’s all for this edition, Eira

From the Chair

Hello to all members of IYANZ

The Event of the year has been the visit of Abhijata Shridar Iyengar May 8 to 10th at the Te Ma-

hurehure Marae in Pt Chev Auckland.

The 150 participants were rewarded with an exceptional performance from Abhijata.

Her teaching penetrated to a deep level within our hearts, bodies and minds. The Iyengar Yoga

Instruction and sequencing assured us of her true Iyengar quality and ability. I am sure applica-

tions to RIMYI in Pune will be hotly sort from New Zealand in up-coming months.

The intensive began with a Maori welcome for Abhijata, her Mother Suchita and daughter Satvika

and all the attendees present. Our representative was Louise Potiki Byant who's return speech in

Maori and English did us proud. I thank Louise on behalf of IYANZ and everybody present at the

intensive for her expertise and sensitivity of the welcome/ response she gave. Louise expressed

the honour of the Iyengar family with the honour of the Marae in a way we could all relate to.

The venue itself proved to be a great success in the space it provided, meals, accommodation,

parking and not forgetting the atmosphere. The Marae is set on spacious grounds with green

lawns and trees in the heart of Auckland City. The meals were cooked and presented by Marae

staff and was fresh and delicious and very appropriate for a Yogi diet.

There were many helpers involved in bringing this Intensive to Auckland, I would have to thank

previous committee members, Corry Regnier as past Chair Person. The present Executive com-

mittee Anna Simms, Roger Brown, Eira Kramer for their tireless and on-going work for our asso-

ciation.

Judith Folkhard for T. Shirts and Sound, Ella James for her tireless work as a one-man Events

committee and managing the door throughout the Intensive. Those working in the "shop" during

the Event, Heidi Napflin and Glenn Mc Beth and our treasurers Jyoteeka Cummings and Admin-

istrator Demelza for the bookwork and booking work that is all part of an Intensive. Thanks to

Tamar Munch for the advertising material, brochure and organising an interview with Abhijata for a

local paper.

A big thank you to all those who travelled to this Event. People came from as far as Queenstown

to Keri Keri to learn from a very distinguished teacher.

Most of all we thank Abhijata Shridar Iyengar who travelled around the world to teach for us.

Namaste

Melodie Batchelor

Glen Ceresoli’s Mana Retreat 2015

It’s the end of Day 3 of Glenn Ceresoli’s Mana Retreat in the Coromandel and I feel like assuming the foetal position. It’s like he has decided the entire retreat so far is an assault against the ramparts of my stiff shoulders, and I’m about ready to concede defeat.

I don’t though, and that’s the point. As Glenn reveals during the course of the retreat, that’s what the yoga is all about: restructuring the mind through the practice of the asana to not only allow us to progress past those emotional low points in our practice, but to extend that reconditioning out into our life to give us the tools to navigate difficult times there as well.

If we can learn how to acknowledge any pain, discomfort or restriction we feel in an as-ana and detach ourselves from it then we can examine that feeling objectively and find ways to alleviate or eliminate it. We can then take that ability to similarly deal with ‘real world’ situations. It is a step towards finding steadiness and ease beyond simple flexibility in the pose (and in life) rather than effort and discomfort.

Of course, we don’t jump into the philosophy immediately: it starts with asana as we be-gin to manipulate our bodies and minds with techniques introduced in the very first poses and expanded upon and reinforced with every subsequent pose.

Each day begins at 6.30am with the Gayatri Mantra followed by 20 minutes of silent sit-ting. An hour of pranayama leads into the morning asana, which lasts for 2 hours and is a dynamic practice that includes a lot of standing poses. We return for the afternoon ses-sion at 4.30pm, which includes inversions and a more restorative practice until 7.00pm.

Glenn places a strong emphasis on understanding WHY we would choose to initiate a particular action or technique so we can critically assess it’s effectiveness and appropri-ateness for the pose, to our capacity at that time. By having an appreciation for the un-derlying structure of the components of an asana we can more intelligently modify the technique, preparation, or use of props to affect the asana as a whole.

In this way our personal practice becomes an expression of our selves; a “sacred sci-ence" rather that “yoga decoration” that is subtly orientating and sensitising our minds.

Then the retreat becomes something else: you’re excited to practice because you’ve found - maybe just for a second - sthira sukham asanam: steadiness, ease, and pres-ence of mind within the asana. It’s an excitement you take with you beyond the beautiful setting of Mana Retreat back to your practice and your life.

Page 12: BKS IYENGAR Light on the Yoga Sutras of PatanjaliYoga Link – July 2015 2 CONTENTS Page From the Editor 2 Acknowledgements 4 Calendar of Events 6 Yoga, A Way of Life, BKS Iyengar,

Yoga Link – July 2015 12

As mentioned (and as I was forewarned), the first part of the retreat may be hard work. Glenn’s adjustments are strong and his instructions are relentless, but at some point the small victories will start: you’ll have an epiphany in a pose where the technique has penetrated and your understanding of the asana is radically modified. Or you’ll realise you’re further into a pose than you’ve ever been before, and it has come without strug-gle or effort.

International Day of Yoga, Wellington

21 June 2015 by Jo Pedan

This year, Winter Solstice, the shortest day, the longest night, was also the first celebra-

tion of International Day of Yoga.

The Indian High Commission organised this celebration of yoga in Wellington and in

various centres throughout New Zealand. In Wellington, we met at the Indian Cultural

Centre. The Wellington Iyengar Yoga Centre was asked if we could do an asana dem-

onstration at the celebrations. The challenge came to me.

I was humbled and inspired by the encouragement, advice and kind words of support

I received from my peers as I prepared my asana demonstration for an expected audi-

ence of close to 200 people. (It’s times like this when having been through a few Iyen-

gar Yoga teaching assessments stands you in good stead).

Telecast to other centres, the Opening Ceremony in Wellington started with the

‘Lighting of the Lamp’, a welcome from the Indian High Commissioner and the telecast

speech from the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, talking of the contribution yoga

can make to the process of self‑transformation, to harmony and to greater world

peace.

The MC, Ravi Mistry (the energy source behind Wellington’s International Day of Yoga),

lead the audience through a simple pranayama. The energy of the room quietened and

came together.

Just before my demonstration Ravi popped over to me and said that the audience might

like to follow my demonstration – obviously we had not discussed this prior to that mo-

ment – I didn’t know if the audience was warmed up for Sirsasana drop back to Dwi

Pada Viparita Dandasana (I was pulling out my showiest stuff). Despite saying it was

‘my showiest stuff’ I really had in mind that this demonstration was to be the best and

most captivating I could possibly do to honour the art of yoga, to honour Guruji, to hon-

our my teacher and my fellow Iyengar Yoga practitioners. (I knew my demonstration

would have a completely different look if my ego was too involved).

Page 18: BKS IYENGAR Light on the Yoga Sutras of PatanjaliYoga Link – July 2015 2 CONTENTS Page From the Editor 2 Acknowledgements 4 Calendar of Events 6 Yoga, A Way of Life, BKS Iyengar,

Yoga Link – July 2015 18

I was followed by two teachers from other yoga traditions. They led the group through sun

salutes, gentle movements, pranayama and Savasana. It was a great experience to be

within the ‘wider’ yoga community. I was struck by the amount of really passionate practi-

tioners from many different walks of yoga. Each of these yogis had similar goals: self-

transformation, bringing greater harmony to their lives, to the lives of those around them,

and greater peace to the world. One of the speakers noted that ‘What we do each day is

very powerful; it impacts greatly on our life, our consciousness’, encouraging us to practice

regularly and to recognise the impact of regular practice.

Finally we shared chai and a sattvic breakfast.

Page 19: BKS IYENGAR Light on the Yoga Sutras of PatanjaliYoga Link – July 2015 2 CONTENTS Page From the Editor 2 Acknowledgements 4 Calendar of Events 6 Yoga, A Way of Life, BKS Iyengar,

Yoga Link – July 2015 19

In Christchurch, Clare Davenport talked about yoga philosophy and yoga asana as she led Kate Coull and Colleen Adamson through a 20 minute demonstration, taken from the asana sequence suggested by Geeta, to an audience of 60 people. They were followed by a teacher from the Australian School of yoga doing simple asana with the audience, then a pranayama session by Aurora from Art of Living and fi-nally there was Mr Aswini, a visitor from India who spoke and showed slides on meditation. In Nelson Anna Timms led a class through Geetaja’s practice and hosted a morning

tea.

I look forward to seeing future ‘International Day of Yoga’ days, feeling sure they

will grow to be an integral part of the world’s culture.

These are the words from Guruji that were with me as I prepared for International

Day of Yoga:

‘Asana penetrate deep into each layer of the body

and ultimately into the consciousness itself’. BKS Iyengar

Retreating with Pixie Lillas Each year for the last nine years pixie has come to New Zealand and run a retreat in the Spring. This is such a poignant time of reflection on our life’s journey. Like a window opening, we experience a clearer view on where we are in our lives. There is time! There is space to develop our practice, time to find more depth within. Each day builds from the previous, each asana session evolves from our Pranayama session, which evolves from our asana session. With our daily chores removed from our everyday life, we can devote our attention for the week on where we are now. It's like a pause in time. Pixie's clear, calm, precise guidance provides the keys to open spaces inside ourselves, not only physically, but mentally, emotionally therefore spiritually as well. We are constantly reminded of our beloved Guruji, in Pixie's sharing of his words from her long experience with his teachings. "Nothing is casual, everything has purpose...” Pixie says “... be inter-ested.” The art of 'being' in our practice evolves rather than just 'doing' our practice. "Work with what you've got" Kimi Ora is such a supportive environment: an Eco Resort nestled amongst the bush looking out to the Able Tasman Sea. For me this week with Pixie has become my rudder to guide me.

Sometimes in the past retreats I have arrived at Kimi Ora and my wa-ters have been extremely turbulent, by the time I leave the waters have calmed. I leave with a sense of peace, clarity and great inspiration. Al-ways. For this I thank Pixie greatly, she has given so much to us all, without holding back. Thank you Pixie for your clear, precise guidance, you help our commu-nity in New Zealand profoundly; thank you for sharing Guruji and Gee-taji's teachings so faithfully and patiently.

Yours in Gratitude, Louisa Potter.
