PROGRAM NOTES
My great-grandfather Phillip Jones came to this country from Ireland where he found work putting the roof on the Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina. He met my great-grandmother, had his children, prayed to his God and found opportunity and a way to contribute to his new homeland. This month, his second great-great-grandson joined our family.
Selina Fillinger’s play feels more potent than ever. Recent events have shown that our country is not as inclusive or as compassionate as I like to think.
I’m afraid. I’m afraid for the marginalized, the isolated and the disenfranchised. And consequently, I’m afraid for all of us because we are all interconnected in profound ways. Alas, this election revealed many who don’t agree.
And this feeling of divisiveness is what is creating fear and anger, it is causing violence and tragedy. It is undemocratic, and we need to fight to keep our Republic alive. Dialogue and reasoned discourse are vital if we are to rise above the blunt and destructive policies of the past. Can we not all have some respect for those whose views differ from our own?
Selina’s play wants us to overcome our fears, to fight for understanding and for the right to express one’s own religious beliefs without discrimination. The desire to connect to a higher power is a right for all of us; our country was founded on it. For many, that right provides the gift of hope for a better life and the promise of a peaceful eternity.
This is truly a great country. I wonder if Phillip Jones would recognize it now. I wonder if we are living up to his dreams for us. I know he came here to escape fear, to pray to his own God, to find work, and to give his children the gift of hope. All of our ancestors came here for those reasons. No matter what, we need to keep their dreams alive.

The women in my play grapple with these same questions. They are often the mouthpiece for my fears, my hopes, my hopelessness. Sometimes they are everything I’m afraid of becoming--greedy and selfish and paranoid; sometimes they are models of the kind of woman I hope to be--brave and compassionate and spiritual.
LS: Why this play now? SF: Faceless definitely took on a new salience for me after the election. We often speak about fanaticism in terms of religion, but usually only as something that occurs “over there.” I think the recent presidential campaigns and election are proof that corruption, propaganda, manipulation, fear, money, hate, terror--they are very much alive and kicking, even within our checked and balanced government. We can try to ignore that, we can call extremists “crazy,” but that does not make their presence any less real or threatening. It’s time to take stock of how we got here and make changes.
LS: What do you hope the audience will take away from this production? SF: If the only thing people walk away with is a cursory knowledge of Islam, or terrorism, or the American judicial system, I would be content.
But those are surface level issues.
For me the play is about the fact that we can no longer afford to fight fear with fear or hate with hate. The “War on Terror” is an oxymoron. There has never been a war that reduced terror. There have been wars that were fought for noble reasons, wars that saved many lives--but even in those cases, both sides felt terror and both sides terrorized. Radicalization occurs when people are lonely, rejected, isolated, broken. I can’t believe that the solution to terrorism is to alienate more people or destroy more lives. Our only option going forward is to commit to radical compassion. I use the word radical because the kind of compassion I’m talking about is disciplined and arduous: it encompasses everyone, without exception, not just those we deem worthy of our empathy. It’s something I struggle with and I think a lot of people do. But of all countries, I feel that America--the nation founded on equality and freedom--must lead that charge.
LS: What is next for you? SF: I’m currently writing a new play, Something Clean, for Sideshow Theatre’s Freshness Initiative. Marti Lyons is directing a staged reading of it this summer. And in the spring I’m performing in Raven Theatre’s world premier of Sarah Sander’s play Sycamore, directed by Devon de Mayo. Go Chicago theatre for supporting young artists and new work!!!
Lauren (LS): What was the inspiration for this play? Selina (SF): It came to me the way most of my play ideas come to me: a headline in the newspaper. Sometimes there’s a word or a picture that elicits a visceral response and my brain goes into overdrive, imagining context, backstory, etc. In this case, I stumbled across an article about an 18 year old white girl from Colorado who was arrested for trying to join ISIS. The whole story was so crazy to me, so I Googled “Americans joining ISIS” and immediately, dozens of articles popped up. I found out that over 250 Americans have joined ISIS so far, and I became obsessed with the idea of radicalization--how people radicalize,
why people radicalize, the many guises radicalization can take. “Terror” is such a buzzword now and we talk about terrorists as if they are always hooded figures murdering children. But what if they are children murdering children? What if they are people who could have been productive members of society but somehow fell through the cracks? Who’s responsible then? Those are the kinds of questions that launched my play.
LS: How much research was involved in writing it? SF: A tremendous amount. There is already so much misinformation in the world about the subject matter that it was essential to put in the time to get it right. And there were a lot of areas to consider: legal procedure, insanity pleas, terrorism, ISIS, Islam, hijabs, hate crimes...
I interviewed young Muslim women, I looked at hijabi fashion blogs, I read the Qur’an, I talked to lawyers. With the amount that I have Googled ISIS and Al-Qaeda, I’m pretty sure both ISIS and the U.S. government are keeping tabs on my computer right now.
LS: What has this new play process been like? SF: Wonderful. Terrifying. Harder than I anticipated, better than I could have dreamed. All I ever wanted to do was act and write, but I don’t think I truly believed it was possible until Northlight gave me this opportunity. This play is by far the most personal thing I have ever written; each draft felt like I was exposing a little bit more of my soul. Fortunately, I have had the most caring, nurturing, brilliant collaborators, who believed in me and the play throughout the process, even when I didn’t believe in myself.
LS: What is your personal connection to this story? SF: I graduated college in June and in the past few months I’ve been trying to figure out what kind of adult I want to be. How to fight for what I believe without being an angry person. How to have hope without disregarding others’ suffering. How to love this country even while it holds so much hate.

Hijab: This term refers broadly to the modesty required of both men and women. The hijab literally means “covering” in Arabic, but it also commonly refers to a veil or headscarf that is one of a variety of coverings worn by Muslim women. They wear the hijab outside of the house, or in the presence of adult males outside of the family. It is a square scarf that wraps around the head and
neck, leaving the face clear. Hijab as a category also refers to other covers like the niqab, the burqa, and the chador. Hijab can also refer to the desire to keep hidden the names of women from the public eye. This might mean keeping unpublished the names of female authors and journalists, or also those making the pilgrimage to Mecca, writing instead the “wife of so and so,” or the “daughter of so and so.”
ISIS: The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, also known as ISIL, IS, and by its Arabic initials “Daesh,” this Sunni militant organization came into existence in April of 2013 out of the remains of Al-Qaeda in Iraq and members of the disbanded Iraqi Army. This extremist organization does not reflect the teachings or values of contemporary Islam. It now controls significant swathes of territory in both Syria and Iraq. ISIS is led by a man named Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who has proclaimed its territory as a “caliphate” and himself as “caliph.” A caliphate is literally an “Islamic state” and its leader, the caliph, is the religious and political leader of that state as the successor to Muhammad, though this is a claim most Muslims reject.
Muhammad: Muslims view Muhammad as the last prophet to transmit the word of God in a line of prophets, including Jesus, Moses, Abraham, and Adam. Muhammad was born around 570 in the city of Mecca, in present day Saudi Arabia. Muhammad would go on to unite both Mecca and nearby Medina under the flag of Islam, which would then spread to cover the majority of the Arabian Peninsula by the time of his death.
Qur’an: The holy book of Islam is made up of 114 chapters containing teachings revealed by Muhammad as passed on to him by God. The book makes frequent reference to stories in both the Torah and the Bible, as Muslims view the Qur’an to be a more complete and final version of those previous teachings.
Sharia: Sharia is the entire body of Islamic Law as indicated by the Qur’an and the Hadith (the words and sayings of Muhammad). As a legal system, Sharia law is exceptionally broad. While other legal codes regulate public behavior, Sharia law regulates public behavior, private behavior and even private beliefs. Of all legal systems in the world today, Sharia law is the most intrusive and restrictive, especially against women. A number of countries have adopted large portions of Sharia into their legal codes, including floggings and beheadings as punishments, while a further number, such as Israel and England, recognize Sharia courts in decisions relating to family law, divorce, and inheritance.
Sunni/Shia: Of the two main branches of Islam, Sunnis make up 87-90% of the global Muslim population, the other 10-13% being Shia. The main interpretative difference between the two sects is the question of succession after Muhammad. Sunnis believe in the validity of the first four successors after Muhammad and that this line of heirs continued until the end of the Ottoman Empire. Shias, on the other hand, only believe in the heirs of the fourth caliph, Ali, who was assassinated as part of a civil war around succession. Shias are the majority in Iraq, a population that has been subjugated by the Sunni forces of the Islamic State.

Invest in Northlight Theatre and help change the world, one play at a time.
It is a dream come true to partner with the Artistic Director of Northlight
on the production of my new play, Faceless. The play itself has stretched me beyond what I thought was possible—artistically, as well as personally. Although the subject matter is far beyond my scope of experience, Faceless continues to feel more revealing and personal than anything
I’ve ever written. Yes, the play deals with terrorism and religion and justice and media and prejudice. If audience members leave discussing any one of those topics, I will be satisfied. But for me, all of that is extra. For me, this play is first and foremost about two young women trying to face their fears, find their voices, and leave their marks.
— Selina Fillinger, playwright, Faceless
