Summary of what we’ll cover

• What is Bite Sized Learning? • Why is this important to learners? • How can this be achieved with an eLearning strategy? • Case studies • Custom parameters • Questions and answers

3

What is Bite Sized learning?

• Bite sized learning is an emergent eLearning paradigm

• It emphasises that eLearning courses should be easily and quickly consumable portions, or “nuggets”

• Nuggets can consist of images, videos, blocks of text, interactive content, etc

• These should be designed to work on any kind of device, specifically mobile ones

• This is important because learning can be done while “on the go” (trains, queues, etc)

Why is it important?

• Learners can more easily digest smaller nuggets of information than larger “blocks” of text

• Bite sized learning takes advantage of our natural energy ebb and flow

• Studies have indicated that our attention span has decreased to somewhere between 5-20 minutes

• Nuggets can be customised, upgraded and edited easily

• This paradigm provides a large amount of flexibility for training organisations

How can this be achieved with an eLearning strategy?

Distance

Classroom resource

Specific courses Print + online

Assessment only

• Determine your goals (this will likely include investigation into the qualifications you wish to deliver)

• Review the options and capabilities of your organisation and system (your delivery mediums, course content, etc)

• Match your goals with solutions designed to meet them

• Implement the solutions and review as necessary

• Goal: Provide access to a high-quality learning resource inside existing Learning Management System

• LMS: Sakai • Outcome: Our resource sits nicely within the existing LMS.

This results in uninterrupted and dynamic access for all users

Case study 2

• Goal: Grant students access to a limited subset of the Catapult resources and assessment tools

• LMS: Moodle 3.1 • Outcome: Any assessment tools the training organisation

does not wish to be used can be easily removed, and the link to Catapult can be included amongst other tools

Case study 3

• Goal: Present students with a logical order to progress through their eLearning

• LMS: D2L (Desire2Learn) • Outcome: Our resource has been split up into small chunks

and the student can work through the chunks in the order set by the teacher

What are custom parameters? • Special attributes used by external Learning

Management Systems • Custom parameters are supported by LTI

(Learning Tools Interoperability) • They allow our resources to be “sliced and diced”

into small chunks Why this is important • Catapult resources can be made part of your

strategy with minimal effort and no disruption • Resource “live” inside existing systems • Students do not need to log in twice -

effectively a “single sign on” system
