Ask North Dakota State Universityhead women's volleyball coachZaundra Bina about the 2004 volley-ball season and you'll hear words likeexciting, process and challenge.

The Bison make the move to theNCAA Division I ranks this season aftera long and successful run at theDivision IIlevel that sawthe volleyballteam qualifyfor 20 of 24NCAAtournaments.NDSU'sathleticprogram is inthe secondyear of a five-year transi-tion periodand will takethe court asa Division Iindependent.

There's adramaticchange in theschedulewith the likesof KansasState,Kansas,Creightonand Wiscon-sin-GreenBay. There'sa dramaticchange in theroster withthe departureof fourseniors including All-Americans JennyGronner-Roisum and Kari Holmgren.

"I think it's exciting. It's an excitingtime for our volleyball program and ourathletic department. The challenge weface is much greater than it has everbeen. At this point, we just want to bein a building mode, so we can put allthe blocks together to create a qualityDivision I volleyball program," said Bina, who is also a 1986 graduate of NDSUand was a member of several Bisonteams that played Division I competi-tion.

"I think our athletes understand andthe community understands this is aprocess, nothing is going to happenovernight. If we approach the transitionwith the same work ethic and samebusiness-type approach, in addition tomaintaining the same philosophy thatwe've had at the Division II level I think

we can besuccessful inour owndefinition ofsuccess."

NorthDakota Statereturns nineletterwinnersincludingthree startersfrom the 2003squad thatcompiled a25-9 recordand con-cluded theNorth CentralConferencewith an 11-3mark thatgave theprogram it's11th leaguechampionshipduring itsfarewell tour.Add to themix a tal-ented recruit-ing class thatincludes atrio of all-state perform-ers, who

could impact the program right away.Question marks surround 6-foot

senior outside hitter Kim Hebl(Stewartville, MN), who had off-seasonsurgery to repair her shoulder. Heblmissed spring practice and might notbe available until September. She iscoming off an impressive junior yearthat saw her earn honorable mention onthe AVCA Division II All-America team.

Hebl also earned all-region and all-conference first team honors afteraveraging 4.07 kills and 2.76 digs pergame. She added 48 blocks and 40

service aces. Hebl enters her senioryear with 1,121 kills and looks to climbthe NDSU career charts.

"From our standpoint, we're trying todo two things. No. 1, plan without her, that we would potentially not have herat all and look at the season from thatperspective. If she's able to be good togo, that's a bonus," said Bina, whostated Hebl's recovery has stayed oncourse through the off-season.

"However, we do have three-to-fourpeople who have played asignificant amount. We have asolid base of experience, eventhough it just may look differentfrom our experience from lastyear because it's not seniors."

A pair of sophomores, 5-10Sheila Parrish (Fargo, ND) andChloe Quirk (Mankato, MN),look to help on the outside.Parrish had a more than produc-tive first season at the collegiatelevel and was named the AVCANorth Central Region Freshmanof the Year. She averaged 3.23digs and 2.35 kills per game, and also added 41 service aces.

Quirk had her first collegiateseason cut short by a kneeinjury after 14 matches. Duringher brief time on the court, shehit .400 including one match with17 kills and only one error in 21attacks. NDSU also looks to tapinto the potential of 6-2 freshmanChristy Stuewe, an all-stateproduct from Mayer LutheranHigh School (MN).

There's another talented senioron the right side in 6-foot Kate Haider(Champlin, MN), who hit .221. Sheaveraged 2.45 kills and 1.79 digs pergame last season, and added 85blocks, 76 assists and 28 service aces.Haider's numbers have improved eachyear and will look to make sure thattrend continues. Looking to throw acurve at the opposition on the right is 6-foot sophomore lefty Kelly Kaufmann(Minnetonka, MN).

"We're definitely excited about Kateand her senior season. I think she hada breakthrough season as a junior. We've seen her just grow in confidenceand grow as a leader," said Bina.

The middle is wide open with thedeparture of All-American Gronner-Roisum and Nicole Rieck. However, that provides an opportunity for playerslike 6-1 junior Sheri Swanson(Hayfield, MN), 6-1 sophomore LindsayShockman (LaMoure, ND) and 6-1freshman Mary Blume (Herman, MN).Swanson continued to refine her game,Shockman is making rapid progressand Blume is excited about taking hergame to the next level.

There will be a new setter in town astalented 5-10 freshman EmilyLuensmann (Dubuque, IA) takes overthe tradition-rich position recentlyvacated by Holmgren. Luensmann wasa prep All-American and Iowa Class 4APlayer of the Year at Hempstead HighSchool. The coaching staff was im-pressed with her skill and competitivenature. A late addition to the roster was5-5 freshman Shanna Kvam, whoplayed nearby Fargo South (ND) HighSchool.

"Emily really strives for perfection, but yet she has a lot of fun playing thegame. I think she will be perceived as a

leader, in terms of how she plays.Down the road, I see her developing theability to pick apart opposing de-fenses," said Bina.

A familiar face and familiar name isgone in the backrow as NDSU's firstlibero Becky Ruebke will not seen onthe court, but on the bench as astudent assistant. The Bison do return5-8 sophomore Courtney Battey(Alexandria, MN), who saw action in all34 matches a year ago. Also expected

to see plenty of court time is 5-8freshman Kari Fagnan (Fridley,MN), who comes to NDSU withan impressive club resume.

North Dakota State starts it'sfirst season at the Division I levelon Sept. 2 at the University ofWisconsin-Milwaukee. The Bisonthen participate at the MarquetteUniversity Challenge on Sept. 3-4. Marquette is coached byformer Bison Hall of Famer PatiRolf.

"We'll know when we get therehow much more we will need todo, but the way we're looking at itis that the game itself reallydoesn't change. Maybe we'll seea bigger athlete, the premierathlete on a more consistentbasis," said Bina.

"From our standpoint, we'regoing to try and do the littlethings well, and continue to playthe same brand of volleyball we'vealways played and tweak fromthere."

Allowing the libero to serve is one ofthe new rule changes in the NCAA thisseason.

“We're excited about that option. Wefeel like that can be a real impact for ourprogram with the ability to add that oncein the rotation of six,” said North DakotaState head coach Zaundra Bina.

The original intent of the liberoposition was to create a defensive ball-handling specialist. By allowing thelibero to serve, a team will be able to puttheir best six players on the court for alarger percentage of the game, andindividual players are given anotheropportunity to play. In response, thisrules change will allow the libero playerto serve in one position designated forthe game.

Coaches must still designate the

number of the libero player before thegame, but can designate the rotation thelibero will serve in at any time during thegame.

Current rules also state that theremust be a rally between two liberoreplacements. To allow the libero toserve, an exception will be made to thisruling. The libero will be allowed toreplace the server without leaving thegame for a rally.

Another rule change included addinglanguage to clarify where coaches maystand during play. This rule change willallow coaches to stand directly in front ofand near their bench or any portion ofthe score table that extends past theattack line on their side.

North Dakota State gets together during a 2003 timeout.

2003 reviewThe North Dakota State women's

volleyball team went out with a bang inits final year as a member of NCAADivision II in 2003 proving they were noflash in the pan.

While head coach Zaundra Binaand the Bison didn't achieve their finalgoal, the veteran team went downswinging to the final point.

From the opening serve againstEmporia State on August 29th until thelast ball settled on the court — theplayers expended all their energies inpursuit of the ring.

NDSU rolled up an impressive 25-9record and claimed ashare of the program's11th NCC title with an11-3 record. The Bisonwere 12th in the finalTop 25 poll andreached the NCAANorth Central Regionchampionship matchfor the second time inthree seasons.

The Bison finishedthe season with a 12-match winning streakat the Bentson BunkerFieldhouse — markingonly the eighth timeNDSU charted anundefeated record athome and the firsttime since 1999.

There was more movement onthe NDSU career charts than onthe NASCAR track at Daytonaas five different players — JennyGronner-Roisum, Kari Holmgren,Becky Ruebke, Nicole Rieck andKim Hebl — each added their namesto several lists.

Other notables from the 2004 seasonincluded breaking the school's four-game blocking records in a marathonmatch against UNC. The Bison finishedwith 24 team blocks including 42 blockassists. There were 39 points scored inthe 41-39 game one loss, was also aNDSU record.

Kim Hebl drilled 31 kills in a five-game win over North Dakota. Shebecame the first Bison to reach 30 killssince former All-American Julie

Sherman. Sherman had a NDSU four-game record 35 against Augustana onNov. 9, 1991.

All the hard work was noticed andawards rolled in. Gronner-Roisum andHolmgren were named to the AVCADivision II All-America team withRoisum becoming the first player sinceCarrie Jacobson in 1999 to earn firstteam honors. Roisum was also namedto the Daktronics, Inc. Division II All-America second team.

Roisum and Holmgren were joined byHebl on the AVCA all-region team, while Sheila Parrish was named the

region's top freshman. Roisum,Holmgren and Hebl were all selected tothe Daktronics, Inc. all-region squad.

Holmgren was one of four players toshare the NCC MVP award, and shewas joined by Roisum, Hebl and Rieckon the all-league squad. The fourplayers were also recognized as NCCplayers of the week.

North Dakota State University couldbe found often in the North CentralConference statistics report releasedNov. 17.

Individually, Rieck was No. 3 inhitting pct. (.307, 130-35-309) and No.15 in blocks (0.74 bpg); Roisum wasNo. 3 in blocks (1.20 bpg), No. 5 in

hitting pct. (.300, 201-52-497) and No.6 in kills (3.72 kpg); Hebl was No. 1 inkills (4.39 kpg), No. 5 in service aces(0.35 sapg) and No. 12 in hitting pct.(.248, 224-75-600); Holmgren was No.1 in assists (13.74 apg), No. 5 inservice aces (0.35 sapg) and No. 15 indigs (3.63 dpg); Ruebke was No. 3 indigs (4.37 dpg); Parrish was No. 5 inservice aces (0.35 sapg), and KateHaider was No. 14 in service aces(.026 sapg).

Team-wise, North Dakota State wasNo. 1 in hitting pct. (.236, 908-329-2454), assists (15.43 apg), kills (16.81

kpg) and service aces(1.63 sapg); No. 2 inopponent hitting pct. (.174,775-343-2478); No. 3 inblocks (2.17 bpg), and No.4 in digs (20.67 dpg).

Academically, Roisumearned CoSIDA Academicall-district second teamhonors, while Holmgrenand Roisum headlined theleague's all-scholar squad.

Bina achieved the 350thwin of her collegiate careeragainst Northern State onAugust 30th. She now hasa 372-112 record in 14seasons with 239 of thosevictories coming at heralma mater of NDSU.

Four differentpersonalities in three differentpositions, this intelligent quartetjoined together to work toward

one common goal during their careersin the Yellow and the Green.

The Bison won 97 matches over thatspan, including a pair of NCC titles andfour trips to the NCAA tournament.

And it's not every year when theprogram has seen all four seniorsclimbing the NDSU career leader chart. But with this impressive group, itshouldn't surprise anyone.

Calm and cool under pressure,Holmgren, a 5-9 setter from Elk River,MN, directed the Bison offense. The all-American was the fifth NDSU setter torecord over 4,000 assists in a careerand also ranks No. 10 all-time in digs.Among the assist leaders in the NCAA

and NCC, Kari played in all 135matches during her four-year stay andappeared in 319 straight games.

Years from now, Ruebke, of Ada,MN, can say she was the first Libero inthe program's history. It was be easy tospot Ruebke, even without the differentcolor jersey, she's the one flying aroundafter the volleyball. Ruebke finishedfourth on the career dig charts.

Intensity could be one word todescribe 5-11 middle hitter Gronner-Roisum; perseverance would beanother. She came back from adevastating knee injury to become adominating force. The All-Americancould be found among the national andleague blocking leaders. Roisumfinished No. 5 all-time at NDSU in blockassists and No. 15 in kills with 1,048.

High-flying Rieck, a 5-10 middle hitterfrom Huron, SD, is a rarity at the

Division II level — a two-sport athlete involleyball and track, who has definitelytaken it to the next level. She was anAll-American and conference champ intrack, and the NDSU coaching staffworried if Nicole would hit her head onthe BBF's low-hanging ceiling.

Rieck was impressive in theclassroom in pursuing her nursingdegree. She was named to the 2002-03Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholars firstteam and is a three-time scholarathlete on the track.

Bina and the volleyball program aremoving up to the Division I ranks in2004. There is a solid recruiting classin place to join a talented cast ofveterans. While there will be manychallenges ahead, the Bison areenthusiastic about taking their game tothe next level.
