Background Bison priscus was the first known bison ,
not long after it was replaced by the long-horned bison, Bison latifrons. B. latifrons was then replaced 18,000 years ago with Bison antiquus.
Bison antiquus died out 10,000 years ago and gave rise to the living species Bison bison.

The living species of Bison is shorter and has smaller bones and horns than its ancestor Bison antiquus.
The common names are American bison, American Buffalo, and the scientific name Bison bison.

Bison bison athabascae --- wood bison
