A sleeveless outer garment worn like a cape overall other vestments. The chasuble is based ontypical men’s clothing in the fourth and fi=hcenturies.
Given as a mark of his apostolic succession, itsignifies the union between the bishop and achurch. The rings, which once served the prac@calpurpose of sealing official documents, probablycame into use in the 11th or 12th century.
Full-‐length, white garment symbolizes purity andresembles the robe Jesus was ordered to wear byKing Herod.
Pointed headdress worn by cardinals, bishops andabbots. Dates to the fourth century, and may havebeen borrowed from that era’s Roman magistrates.Always worn when carrying the crosier, but removedfor prayer. It matches the chasuble.
Hangs at the breast from a chain around the neck.May be decorated with precious stones and cancontain relics from saints or martyrs. The cross isworn during liturgical func@ons and over streetclothes. Came into use in the 11th or 12th century.
Six-‐foot-‐tall plus ceremonial staff used by bishopsis shaped like a shepherd’s crook, to symbolizeleading his flock. A bishop typically carries hiscrosier only in his diocese and then only whilewearing the miter.
