followed by some others, all rather long, and delivered inmuch too low a voice. Statistics of the havoc caused byvariola in various localities, the more or less prophylacticpower of vaccination, the importance of certain remedies, and the relative mortality were, in turns, touched upon; butin a very unconnected form, and leaving no practical im-pression on the hearers. An exception should, however, bemade in favour of two short and pertinent speeches-thefirst by Professor Teissier of Lyons, the second by Dr.Lahilonne of Pau. M. Teissier plainly stated that muchdoubt still overhung the value of the different kinds of vac-cination, and insisted on the necessity of a committee of in-vestigation. He was also strongly of opinion that theEnglish system of compulsory vaccination should be intro-duced into France. M. Lahilonne alluded principally totreatment, and said that many Prussian prisoners under hiscare had suffered from the hsemorrhagic form of small-pox,and that he had succeeded in saving them by the use ofergot of rye. In the evening of the same day some morepapers were read, giving rise to no particular interest save avery warm speech by Prof. Pacchiotti of Turin, who de-fended the Jennerian vaccination. Altogether the animalvaccination, for some time rather in favour here in Lyons, found no strenuous supporters, and was, on the contrary, clearly found fault with. However, the president was veryanxious that the congress should express a distinct wish tobe placed before Government as regards compulsory vacci-nation. The votes were taken on the morning of the nextday (the 19th), and it was unanimously resolved that thecongress were in favour of compulsory vaccination. Now

began the papers on gunshot wounds, and it might be ex-pected that after the late war a mass of information wouldbe brought forward calculated to throw much light on thetreatment of these injuries; nor were we disappointed inthis respect, though long speeches and long papers hereagain tended to mar the interest of the subject. But tosave post, and in order not to fall into the mistake of a longletter, almost as bad as a long speech, I will reserve the con-sideration of this question and the eight successive ones fornext week.
