363 BRITISH MEDICAL SERVICE.-The following is a list of gentlemen who competed successfully for appointments as Assistant-Surgeons in this service at the competitive examination held at the London University on Feb. 20th:- THE Privy Council Lave e awarded, the sum of £39 10s. to Dr. William Pearse, the public vaccinator for the Westminster district, for his meritorious vaccinations. TESTIMONIAL TO EMANUEL MAY, ESQ.-A large number of the ex-patients and friends of this excellent prac- titioner met in St. Paul’s School, Park-lane, on Wednesday evening, to present him with a testimonial, on his leaving for the South of France. A beautiful clock under a glass shade, and a massive and elegant silver double inkstand, with taper in centre-amounting in value to £65—were then presented with a suitable address to Mr. May, who in reply, dwelt on the pleasure he had enjoyed in all his relations, professional and otherwise, with his clientele. MEDICAL SOCIETY OF LONDON.-The Society held its ninety-eighth annual meeting at Willis’s Rooms, King- street, St. James’s, on Wednesday, the 8th inst. The Presi- dent, John Gay, Esq., F.R.C.S., was in the chair, supported on the right hand by the President of the Royal College of . Surgeons, Sir William Fergusson, Bart., and on the left by the President-elect, Dr. Andrew Clark, F.R.C.P. The usual loyal toasts having been drunk, the ‘° Medical Society " was given, in proposing which the President took occasion to express his great pleasure to congratulate the assembly upon its prosperous and flourishing condition, due, he most emphatically said, to the unanimity and good feeling which prevailed among them. He thanked the Fellows generally for the hearty support they had rendered him during his presidency. In responding to the toast of the ‘‘ Examining Bodies," Sir William Fergusson congratulated the Society on arriving at so mature an age in these times of change, and in such a healthy condition. Among the visitors were the li Presidents of the Hunterian Society, the Harveian Society, i , the Medico-Psychological Society, and the Pharmaceutical Society. G." has made a third donation of £1000 to the Royal Free Hospital. "A Lady" has given £1000 (in lieu of a legacy of that am,ount), to the Birmingham and Midland Free Hospital for Sick Children. John Thomas Bennett, Esq., of St. Albans, bequeathed to the Fever Hospital, Consumption Hospital, Cancer Hospital, and Royal Sea Bathing Infirmaary, Margate, each .,31000; and smaller amounts to several other hospitals. "F. S. E." has made a second donation of £1000 to the Lock Hospital. 4’M. W. O." has made a second donation of .61000 to King’s College Hospital. "W. L. H." has given £ 1000 to the West London Hospital. The General Hospital, Birming- ham, has become entitled to £500 under the will of Mr. Thomas Biddle, of Fillongley. Captain W. B. I’hillimore has paid to the secretary of the National Hospital for Con- sumption, Ventnor, a donation of £250 ; and an anonymous donation of £100 has been forwarded to Dr. Hassall for The Chapel Building Fund."
