PASTOR'S NOTE

ARE YOU FOLLOWING US ON FACEBOOK? VISIT FACEBOOK.COM/UNIVERSITYAVENUEBAPTISTTO STAY UP-TO-DATE ON WHAT'S GOING AT UABC!

It has been a great pleasure to be your Interim Pastor the last few months. I love University Avenue Baptist Church. I always liked your church, but now that I have had the privilege of getting to know the staff, the deacons, the pastor search committee and all the other committees, I love UABC.

Your staff did a fantastic job of continuing the ministries of the church when your senior pastor resigned almost one year ago. That is amazing. We are really looking forward to moving ahead in the new year. We are making some great plans that will be a source of great blessing to everyone in the church.

I am working with your deacons to keep a close watch over the flock. They are dedicated to protecting the church and guarding the doctrine of the Word of God. We especially want to care for the shut-ins and those in the hospitals. Please help us be aware of those with special needs.

Being an Interim pastor is a part-time job, but I am dedicated to being available to meet the needs of the church members as well as those the church is reaching for Christ. Thank you for welcoming Peggy and me to your fellowship!

Pastor Blaine

HABITS FOR A NEW YEARMany of us have new year's resolutions. Below are some ideas for new habits, related to spiritual disciples, you and your family could add to your daily routine:

PHOTO PRAYERSPrint or gather printed photos of people you would like to pray for this year (if you do not have a photo of them, write their name on a piece of paper). Place the pictures in an envelope or box near your bed. Before bed each evening, look at each of the photos as you pray for each person.

This habit can be done by the youngest in our church family. If you have a baby or young toddler, hold them in your lap as you go through the photos. As you look at each photo, say, "God Bless _____." or "God, thank you for loving ______." After the final picture, say "Amen."

SABBATH JARGod gave humans sabbath "as a restorative and recuperative gift," Adele A. Calhoun says in her book Spiritual Disciplines Handbook. "God did not intend for life to be all effort, so he punctuated each week with twenty-four hours of sabbath rest, during which people could remember what life is about and who it is for. Sadly, everything about us works against slowing down. Our compulsion to produce and not waste time invades the space God gave us to rest...God's sabbath reality calls us to trust that the Creator can manage all that concerns us in this world as we settle into his rest."

Make a plan for your sabbath rest this year. One way to do this is through making a sabbath jar. Write ideas of ways you can observe a 5 minute sabbath on pieces of paper and place them in a jar. Once a week, pick a piece of paper out of the jar, set a timer, and do the listed activity. Notice how refreshed and recharged you feel! Return the slip of paper to the jar to come up again.

Here are some ideas for 5-minute sabbath activities: Go on a short walk, close your eyes and listen to an inspiring piece of music, sit in silence and drink a small glass of ice water (without doing anything else), write someone a thank you note, write a prayer to God, read chapters in Psalms, etc.
