Dear Parents, Carers and Students, October 24, 2019 World Teachers’ Day is celebrated in Australia tomorrow - Friday 25 October. The day is an opportunity to acknowledge and thank teachers for their significant contribution to the classroom and to the school community. All of you would agree that our teachers do outstanding work at Our Lady’s, and on behalf of our school community I thank them for everything that they do. When I talk about teachers in our school I am talking about all staff who assist, listen to and teach our children. To our staff in the Office to our staff in the classrooms and everywhere in between, our school is blessed to have such dedicated people who want to be the best for our community. So, just like the children when they want to be special for a day- teachers are allowed to have a ‘casual clothes day’ tomorrow. Plus they’ll get a badge to make them feel special ! A school's vision articulates to the whole school community its values and desired future achievements. It aims to gain support for the school's core educational values, goals and improvement plan. As a Catholic School, the teachings of Jesus Christ, as presented in the gospels, are central to our vision, mission and values. Next Monday under the guidance of Paul Spence, we are revisiting our School Vision Statement with the intention of ensuring our vision is in keeping with our school going forward. Paul is working with groups of parents, students and staff to ensure everyone has a voice in our new vision. Many of our families have worked with Paul during our sacramental programs. Special thanks to our parents who accepted an invitation to be our parent voice for the new Vision Birthday wishes to all the children who celebrate their birthday: Davy 4C, Alexander Rozine 4E, Youliuss Prep K, Melano Prep D, Jayden 2H, Ava Prep C, Meera 3A, Oliver Prep C, Melak 1T, Thomas Prep H, Mariska Prep C, Tiffany 1S, Hanna 1P, Manuel 4C, Ramina 3A, Harnaaz 4M. Gospel Reflection and Challenge Luke 18: 9–14

The publican returned to his home justified; the Pharisee did not.

Some people like just salt on their food and other people like only pepper. Like black and white,

salt and pepper seem to be opposites. But some people like them both and use them together, as

complements to each other’s flavour. The proud Pharisee and the humble sinner seem to be

opposites, but they can also be seen as complements as well.

The proud Pharisee was able to understand the good things about himself. This gave him

confidence to pray in thanksgiving for his blessings.

It’s good to be thankful for blessings, but Jesus would probably say the proud Pharisee took it a

bit too far. Why do you think so?

The humble sinner was able to understand the flaws in himself. But still he had the confidence

to pray for forgiveness and mercy. It’s good to be aware of all your flaws, but a person could

take this a bit too far as well.

    Challenge:

Have a healthy pride in your talents, as well as a healthy humility in your place

on earth as a servant of God.

Celebrating the Extraordinary Month of Mission

Jesus is at the heart of all evangelising and missionary

activity. It is from Jesus that we draw our strength and

inspiration. It is to Jesus that we bring our hopes for

ourselves, the church and the world, and it is with Jesus

that we walk from the darkness of the tomb into the light

of the world. We are called to be the light, to be people of

mercy, to spread the Good News.

This Extraordinary Missionary Month offers us an

opportunity to renew our efforts to grow in discipleship with the Lord. So let us accept this

gracious invitation for the month of October. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus and renew our

personal relationship with him. Let us draw upon our ancestors in faith and join our footsteps

with theirs as we go out to all the world to proclaim the Good News: ’Throughout the world,

let us be “permanently in a state of mission”’ (Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium, §25). In describing the Church on mission, Pope Francis says “we view the world with God’s own eyes

    and heart”.

LEARNING FOR LIFE DAY Not all children get an equal start in life. 1 in 6 Australian children live in poverty. Many

children fall behind in learning because of this. The Smith Family is an organisation that

helps these children. One of the main ways they do this is through learning programs. One of

their main programs is called ‘Learning for Life’.

To help these children in need the Social Justice Leaders are organising a ‘Learning for Life’

day on Tuesday 12th of November. On this day many of the resources that we take for

granted will be taken away from us (pens, pencils, books, computers etc). To have access to

these resources will require a small amount of money. All the funds raised will go to the

Smith Family to support the Learning for Life program.

Students will be provided with 1 pencil and 1 piece of blank paper. Access to other resources

will require an additional costs. Students can choose to access as many or as little resources

    as they like.

Learning for Life Day access costs

Pens, pencils, rubber, sharpener etc 20 cents each

    Books 50 cents

    Laptops, computers, iPads 1 dollar
