The principle of every BIRKENSTOCK product has always been to use nature’s specifications as a standard for supporting

and maintaining the natural functions of the foot.

From the very beginning, BIRKENSTOCK has done everything possible to alleviate the suffering caused by the various shoe

trends over time. This was first achieved with flexible insoles, and later with the blue footbed, which is laid inside the shoe and

provides additional comfort you can feel straight away. These were the first steps towards a new way of treating people’s feet.

HOw tHe MAdRId MOdeL wORks

The straps, footbed and buckle of the sandal are

optimally adapted to the foot’s natural rolling move-

ment. When the heel rises from the footbed the foot

flexes over the ball and causes the toes to contract

sharply in a gripping movement. When the heel goes

back down, the muscles relax again. So every time

you take a step, you are strengthening your foot and

calf muscles and stimulating your circulation.

Walking on different types of flooring automatically generates an electrostatic charge. This can be dangerous, because even the slightest

discharge in an operating theatre or intensive care ward can lead to complications.

The antistatic clogs protect patients in intensive care and sensitive operating technology from potentially dangerous discharges.

Charges are constantly and gently dissipated, which avoids larger electrostatic impulses.

The Super-Birki antistatic and Birki-Air antistatic clog models are fitted with replaceable anti-static footbeds. By contrast, the Birki

anti-static model has an integrated footbed, which is made of a single piece of flexible antistatic blended foam – the same material as

the clog.

In the late 1990s, uniform standards for safety, protective and occupational footwear were established at the European level. They still

determine the applicable standards in this area to this day. The technical services provider TÜV Rheinland tests our BIRKENSTOCK

Professional models against the following standards:

· en iso 20344: Specifications and test procedure · en iso 20345: Specifications for safety shoes

· en iso 20346: Specifications for protective shoes · en iso 20347: Specifications for occupational shoes

All shoes are described as occupational shoes if they have slip-resistant, antistatic or similar characteristics and generally do not have

special toe protection. Models with toe protection are divided into two categories: protective shoes (plastic toecap, impact energy of

up to 100 joules) and safety shoes (steel toecap, impact energy of up to 200 joules).

Our soles have been tested by TÜV Rheinland and must meet the standards for one of the following categories:

· sra – Slip resistance on ceramic tiles with detergent

· srb – Slip resistance on steel floor with glycerine

ConstruCtion of the esd soft footbed

Walking on different types of flooring automatically generates an electrostatic charge. Subsequent contact with conductive materials

and medical devices, but also with patients and colleagues, causes a sudden discharge. This is accompanied by a spark and a

small electric shock. ESD sandals and clogs have been developed to provide protection and prevent unpleasant shocks (from 105

to 3.4 × 107 ohms, according to EN ISO 61340).

Comfortable feet in every shoe

With the flexible Blue Footbed you can also enjoy BIRKENSTOCK comfort in many different shoes. As many people with

the same shoe size often have toes of differing length, the flexible Blue Footbed has a three-quarter length. This guarantees an optimal

fit, without having to take the length of the forefoot and the shape of the shoe tip into account. Shoe sizes can differ from the size of

the footbed.

On a hard, flat surface, the foot only touches the ground with the heel and the ball. That’s a lot of pressure on a small area. With the

blue footbed® the foot has a larger area of impact. Weight is distributed more evenly and so the pressure on a given point is

lower.

Natural cork makes up 90% of the footbed. This premium raw material, which stems from the bark of the cork oak, is mixed

with natural latex to make a very flexible, light shell. Cork’s outstanding shock-absorbing properties relieve pressure on the

sole of the foot by absorbing the impact and the weight of the body. The natural raw material is very elastic and returns to

its original shape when pressure is removed. Cork provides insulation against heat and cold, and also has excellent antibac-

terial properties. It is also capable of absorbing moisture quickly and releasing it again.

Latex is the natural glue for the footbed. It simply envelopes the cork grain in a loose matrix and thus enables it to maintain

all the properties described above. The cork–latex core is covered above and below by jute fabric, which acts as a stabiliser.

Jute fibres are characterised by their natural rigidity and toughness. The lower jute layer provides stability and the upper,

denser layer serves to absorb moisture. We also attach great importance to the soles of our shoes. They are made of

ethylene vinyl acrylate (EVA) and are remarkable for their outstanding durability and excellent shock-absorbing

characteristics.

Our leathers are especially thick – around 3 mm – yet still soft. They are unsplit so they retain all of their valuable

natural properties. We use deeply dyed, permeated leather in place of artificial surface dyes – which keeps the leather

airpermeable and breathable. Although all of the leather we use is natural, this catalogue differentiates between the

different optical and surface features using the following categories.

SUede LeAtheR

The suede used by BIRKENSTOCK

is extra thick and of particularly good

bIRKo-FLoR®

Birko-Flor® is a skin-friendly, tear-proof

and easy-care material. The upper

layer of the material has a structure si-

milar to leather. The underside is made

of a soft fleece.

NUbUCK LeAtheR

Nubuck leather is created by sanding

the natural grain of the leather. This

process gives the leather a fine nap.

bIRKo-FLoR® NUbUCK

A special finish gives this material a

surface that not only looks like nubuck

leather, but feels the same, too.

WooL FeLt

Our high-quality wool felt is 100% na-

tural and is made of pure wool, making

it extremely robust and breathable.

UNPARALLELED COMFORTEveryone’s feet are different. This is why we offer our deep footbed in two widths: the normal width for normal feet and

the narrow width for particularly narrow feet. Our uppers match the respective footbed widths to ensure an optimal fit.

In combination with the adjustable straps, this gives you a ‘made-to-measure shoe’ that fits your feet perfectly.

When you buy your BIRKENSTOCK shoes, make sure that you have a few millimetres free around your heels and toes. When

you walk, your toes need this space to move as your foot completes a step.

the PeRFeCt FIt

Shoes affect the way we move. That’s why it’s so important that they fit properly – both when standing and walking. In

the following tips, we show you how you can adjust your BIRKENSTOCK model for a perfect fit to enjoy the feeling of

unparalleled comfort.

01

Open all the straps and put your feet in the footbeds. Be sure that you have a few millimetres of space around your heels

and toes. You need this room for your foot to flex naturally. Your feet should also fit snugly inside the footbed shape and

not extend over the rim on either side. Please note that our footbed is available in two different widths.

Close the straps comfortably around your feet. Leave enough room to allow your feet freedom of movement when you

are walking.

03

With back-strap models please be careful not to pull the strap too tight, or your foot will be pushed too far forward in the

footbed.

04

Once you have adjusted your BIRKENSTOCK shoes, you should take a few steps in them. If your feet can move freely

when you walk and do not press against the edge of the footbed, you have chosen the right size and width.

The special cleaning attachment is perfect for removing stains

from natural leather.

02 Simple care for Birko-Flor®.

You can clean Birko-Flor® models by wiping the surface with a

damp cloth.

03 Clean the lining regularly.

To keep the suede lining soft, you should brush it regularly with a

nylon or wire brush.

04 Cork should not be allowed to dry out.

If the cork edge is no longer shiny, this means the natural latex

coating has worn off and the cork can dry out. With the

BIRKENSTOCK cork care product you can reseal the footbed and

increase the lifespan of your sandals and clogs even further.

05 Remove dust and dirt.

The soft rubber brush gets rid of dust and dirt easily.

06 Rub away scratches.

Slight scratches in our natural leather can be removed by rubbing

them gently with the ball of your hand.

Our feet are the basis for healthy posture. However, if our feet are

weakened by a lack of exercise, the wrong footwear or unsuitable

stresses and strains, it sets off a chain reaction: all the body’s axes

become unbalanced – from the ankle, knee and hip joints through to

the lumbar and cervical vertebrae. Potential consequences include

back, knee and hip pain as well as sore shoulders and headaches.

It is easy to do our feet a favour, however. Because the flexible

BIRKENSTOCK footbed exercises our feet with every step. The toe

grip stimulates a contraction reflex which tenses the toe and calf

muscles. Afterwards, the muscles relax again. When we walk, the

continuous alternation of tensing and relaxing the muscles exercises

our feet and legs and stimulates circulation. It also strengthens the

connective tissue and the function of the sole as a shock absorber.

All this encourages the natural, correct stance of the feet, improves

the posture of the whole body and thus ultimately results in a feeling

of greater well-being.
