Introduction

For all of us, this was our first trip to Peru. We knew that going to central Peru would not end in

the highest number of species, but most of the endemics are in this part of the country. So a must-

be destination, that is for sure.

Thanks …

……. to Andrew Spencer (GPS-coordinates), David Van den Schoor (sounds, trip reports, and

general info), Hans Matheve (general information) and Lieven De Temmerman (GPS-coordinates)

for all their information and help. Thanks to Gunnar Engblom for the organisation of the trip. Last

but not least, thanks to Julio Benites. He did a great job, driving us around for 3 weeks.

Trip report – Peru 2012

Logistics

Kolibri Expeditions arranged a car with driver and the pelagic. Everything was well organised.

Julio Benites was our driver and he did a great job. See Julio in action on this link (not from our

trip). We can only recommend him. He has many experience driving birdwatchers. He knows the

places and the exact stakeouts for many species. His breakfasts and lunches, prepared in the field,

were great; it was always a pleasure to arrive at the car again after birding.

At Junin Lake, Bosque Unchog and Bosque de Frejolillo, Gunnar made the appointments with

local guides. Regulary, we were in contact with him by telephone to discuss and adjust our

planning. Also, his information to find the good ones was essential.

Visa

Belgian citizens need an international passport to enter Peru. You do not need a visa before arrival.

Books The best travel guide about birdwatching in Peru is Thomas Valqui’s “Where to Watch

Birds in Peru”. Already published in 2004, this book is still accurate for most of the places.

When necessary, I will add additional information in the “Visited sites” chapter.

Travel guide was “National Geographic Traveler Peru”

Trip reports and other information

Main source for finding trip reports on the internet was www.travellingbirder.com. Nowadays, this

fantastic website is no longer online.

Also very usefull was http://www.birdingperu.com. Have a look at the “Where to go birding”-

page. Also worth mentioning is www.kolibriexpeditions.com.

We also got information on species and checklists out of the reports on Birdquest and Fieldguides.

In addition, many messages on the Birding Peru e-mail group contain a lot of information.

On Andrew Spencer’s website, there is also a trip report with a lot of indispensable information.

The following reports contain the most useful and recent information:

Maps

Peru/Pérou – Michelin 1:1500000.

GPS-coordinates

We used GPS-coordinates made by Lieven De Temmerman and Andrew Spencer.

In addition, I recorded many coordinates and registered many tracks. For these, please contact me.

Visited sites

Information from other trip reports and websites will not be repeated. I only added information

where it is relevant. For a few sites, a map created by Google Earth is added. These maps just give

an impression of the area. For the exact GPS-coordinates and tracks, please contact me.

Pelagic from Lima

The pelagic was organised by Kolibri Expeditions. More information on pelagics is

available on their website. Nowadays, boats have no longer the right to go out of the coast

for more than 50 km. This reduces the chance to see deep-water specialities.

Coast south of Lima

Cliffs

The cliffs behind restaurant El Salto del Fraile, just south of the suburbs of Lima city, are a

good place for Surf Cinclodes.

Balneario (Costa Azul)

On this marshy area at Ventanilla Beach, Daniel Lane recorded the subspecies murivagans of

Black Rail in June 2010 and 2011. It is just an hour driving north of Lima. Good place for

waders, gulls and other species.

Apaya area

This region is not mentioned in WTWB Peru. Only recently, it is accessible for birders. Apaya

is a very small village situated along the Comas – Satipo road with good birdwatching places

north and south of it. The Andamarca Valley is at a few hours driving from Apaya. In Apaya,

there is basic accommodation for birdwatchers. There is a small lodge just outside the village.

The owner lives in the village. Probably everyone knows him because there are just a few

houses in Apaya.

Forest south of the village

This rather small forest is close to the village. It is in the direction of the Apaya Pass and

Andamarca Valley. Gunnar Engblom discovered a new species of spinetail here. This

Cranioleuca is different from the weskei race of Marcapata Spinetail and close to the

albiceps race of Light-crowned Spinetail from south Peru and Bolivia.

Puente Carrizales

The forest northwest of Apaya is of a different type than the one in the south. This forest is

at a much higher altitude than the village and holds other species. The yet undescribed

Millpo Tapaculo is easy here. Black-spectacled Brush-finch is possible. Best birdwatching

place is near the bridge.

Andamarca Valley (see Andrew Spencer’s report)

We visited some alternative sites than the ones mentioned in Spencer’s report. For the GPS-

coordinates, please contact me. Additional information can be found on Gunnar’s blog. Species

new to science and not yet described are “Apurimac” Screech-owl, “Mantaro” Wren,

“Mantaro” Thornbird. Already described is the Black-spectacled Brush-finch.

Satipo Road (see WTWB Peru – Thomas Valqui)

We spent only one day on this road. Other groups usually spend three to four days up here.

Because many species are similar to the Manu Road, we decided to stay here just one day.

Because of that, our species list is smaller compared to others. For more details, see also other

reports.

Villa Rica (see WTWB Peru – Thomas Valqui)

Bosque Shollet (not mentioned in WTWB Peru)

There is a dirt road going between Oxapampa and Villa Rica. At the pass (2360 m.a.s.l.),

there is good forest. The area is protected and known as Bosque Shollet. Is it an alternative

for the nearby Antenna Road, which is north of it. Keep in mind, the Antenna Road is

probably still better. Neverthless, we had good views of Cloud-forest Screech-Owl at

Bosque Shollet.

Logbook

June 13th

2012

Early morning, we travelled by train from Brussels to Amsterdam (Schiphol International

Airport). At 12h30, we had our international flight with KLM to Lima. After a smooth

flight, we arrived in Lima at 19h00. We met one of the drivers of Kolibri Expeditions. He

drove us to a hotel in Miraflores; Kolibri Expeditions booked it. At the hotel, we met

Gunnar Engblom, the director of Kolibri. Night in Miraflores (Lima).

June 14th

2012

We started our tour with a pelagic from Lima. Together with Gunnar, a Canadian and 2

Peruvian birders, we left the harbour of Lima at 6 o’clock. We left with a small motorboat

that can take 28 people. This was our first pelagic ever. In the harbour, we saw our first

lifers of the trip: Gray Gull, Inca Tern and Belcher’s Gull.

Inca Tern Belcher’s Gull

The sea was calm. According to Gunnar, probably even too calm to make chumming

efficient. We sailed out of the coast for 50 km and on the way, saw more “new” birds, like

Salvin’s and Waved Albatrosses, White-chinned and Pink-footed Shearwater, Wilson’s,

Elliot’s, Wedge-rumped and Markham’s Storm-Petrels, Peruvian Diving-Petrel, Swallow-

tailed Gull, Peruvian Tern, Chilean and South Polar Skua . Species such as Sooty

Trip report – Peru 2012

Shearwater, Peruvian Booby and Pelican were numerous. At the rocks of Isla San Lorenzo,

we discovered a few Blue-footed Boobies and Humboldt Penguins.

We arrived in the harbour again at 13h30 where we observed two flocks of Surfbirds as

well.

In the afternoon, we went south of Lima. We found Surf Cinclodes at some cliffs along the

coast. From here, we drove to Pantanos de Villa, a wetland a few kilometres more to the

south. We were too late to enter the park through the main gate, close near the main road.

Luckily, we could reach the beach, from where we had a look at a larger lagoon. We saw

many ducks, egret and gull species. Slate-colored Coot and wintering Andean Gulls were

new. Night in Miraflores (Lima).

June 15th

2012

This morning, we met Julio, our driver for the next 3 weeks. At 5 o’clock, we left Lima for

a visit to Lomas de Lachay. It is a 2 hours drive to reach the reserve, north of the capital.

We first went to the north (back) part of the reserve. Soon we found one of the targets,

Cactus Canastero. Erwin and Tom also saw a Grayish Miner. After a few hours, we drove

back to the main road and entered the park through the main entrance (seaside). Along the

road, we noticed Cinereous Harrier, Least Seedsnipe and Coastal Miner. We spent a few

hours at the trails around the HQ. Andean Tinamou, Bare-faced Ground-Dove, Thick-billed

Miner, Cinereous Conebill, Collared Warbling-Finch and Peruvian Meadowlark were the

most important species. Because I did not see Grayish Miner, we drove back to the other

side of the park and found one at the same place as Erwin and Tom saw one earlier. Just

outside the park, near the main road, we saw our first Peruvian Thick-knees of the trip.

Closer to Lima, there is a large wetland near Balneario. Last year, in the same period,

Black Rails of the subspecies murivagans were observed. At sunset, we searched for it but

we had no luck. In addition, we did not get response on playback. It was nice to see a

Wilson’s Phalarope but in general, it was rather quiet here. Night in Miraflores (Lima).

June 16th

2012

We left Lima at 5 o’clock to the Santa Eulalia Valley, a trip from sea level to 4900 m.a.s.l..

Soon after we left, we started climbing into the Andes and drove in a rather small valley. In

Santa Eulalia village, we turned left, into the Santa Eulalia Valley. Scrub Blackbird was the

first lifer of the day. The landscape was beautiful and we preferred to stop driving to start

birding. However, Julio suggested starting at a first stakeout. At an altitude of 1600 m.a.s.l.,

Trip report – Peru 2012

there was a small patch of forest. A couple of Pygmy-Owls were sitting in the top of a dead

tree. Golden-bellied Grosbeaks and Long-tailed Mockingbirds were just a few of the more

common species that were hanging around. At a next stop, we found a Black-necked

Woodpecker near his nesthole, and another stop was good for Great Inca-Finch. Also

present in this section of the valley were Andean Swift, Peruvian Sheartail and Giant

Hummingbird. The next stop was at the scrubby hillside just behind the bridge (2200

m.a.s.l.). The road zigzags uphill to the entrance road of San Pedro de Casta (3000 m.a.s.l.).

From then on, we were on the right side of the valley. Along the zigzag road, there is scrub

all around and it is one of the best places for birding in the Santa Eulalia Valley. We

observed i.a. Black-breasted Hillstar, Canyon Canastero, Rufous-chested Tanager, Collared

Warbling-Finch and Black Siskin. It was good birding overhere but maybe it was already

too late for optimal bird activity. It was already late afternoon when we arrived at the

stakeout for White-cheeked Cotinga. Too late for the cotinga but we had Black Metaltail,

Striated Earthcreeper and Plain-breasted Earthcreeper. The further we drove the less

vegetation we saw. Because of the altitude, breathing was getting harder and walking uphill

took more effort. The number of birds was decreasing. We saw higher altitude species like

Peruvian, Plumbeous, Ash-breasted and Band-tailed Sierra-Finches and Bright-rumped

Yellow-Finches. Late afternoon, we arrived at the Milloc Bog (Marcapomacocha). At an

altitude of 4800-4900 m.a.s.l., we suffered from high altitude sickness but all new species

around were a good motivation to keep on going. Top of the bill were Puna Tinamou,

Diademed Sandpiper-Plover, Olivaceous Thornbill and Junin Canastero. Also around were

Andean Geese, Giant Coot, Andean Lapwing, Andean Flicker and White-winged Diuca-

Finch.

It was time to descend again. On the main road, we drove down to San Mateo (3100

m.a.s.l.). Night in San Mateo.

June 17th

2012

First place we drove to in the morning was Milloc Bog. Target was White-bellied

Cinclodes. We dipped it the day before and hoped to have more luck now. Unfortunately,

there were no White-bellied Cinclodes on the spot. But we had another option, Ticlio Pas.

Immediately when we arrived there, we saw a family group of 5 birds. They gave great

views.

Because we had a long drive ahead, we soon left Ticlio Pas. We drove in the direction of

Comas, passing by La Oroya and Matahuasi. Behind Santa Rosa village we started

Trip report – Peru 2012

climbing again above 3600 m.a.s.l.. Near Laguna Pomachoca, and already at 4400 m.a.s.l.,

we saw a Dark-winged Miner. Mountain Caracara and a few species of ground-tyrants gave

excellent views. We descended to Comas. Behind this village, we drove on a small

spectacular road on the flanks of the mountains. The distances are not that far but the

average speed is low. We made a halt from time to time for birdwatching but in general,

birding was rather slow. Most birds were found on places with more bushes. We soon

found an Eye-ringed Thistletail, Striated Earthcreeper, Stripe-headed Antpitta, Black-

throated Flowerpiercer and Slaty Brush-Finch. The road started climbing again above 4000

m.a.s.l.. Near Laguna Toctuca, we found a Streak-backed Canastero. It was already late and

we did not have that much time left today. The plan was to reach a place for Millpo

Tapaculo before dark. Julio drove a little bit faster and we reached the place in time.

Immediately after we started taping, a tapaculo responded. After a few minutes, we found

the small fellow in the bushes. After another hour driving, we arrived in Apaya (2200

m.a.s.l.). Just outside the village, in the direction of the Apaya Pass, there is a small, basic

hotel. We stayed here for the next 3 nights. Night in Apaya.

June 18th

2012

In the morning, we started at the forest just south of Apaya. Birdactivity was great at the

beginning of the day. A few of the species we noticed were Blue-mantled Thornbill,

Shining Sunbeam, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Great Sapphirewing, Creamy-creasted

Spinetail, Eye-ringed Thistletail, Lacrimose and Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanagers and

Moustached and Black-throated Flowerpiercers. In addition, we observed three Anden

Guans. We had no luck with the newly discovered Cranioleuca-spinetail.

Once outside the forest, the number of birds dropped dramatically. We saw no interesting

birds in the grasslands at the Apaya Pas (4000 m.a.s.l.). We continued our way to the

Andamarca Valley. Recently, this valley is known for the discovery of a few birds, new to

science. Not all of them have been described yet. On a tree near the road, we found a

roosting Screech-Owl . This was the new subspecies of Koepcke’s Screech-Owl or even a

new species, “Apurimac” Screech-Owl. Also the new “Mantaro” Thornbird and the new

“Mantaro” Wren were found easily. We had to search much harder to find Black-

spectacled Brush-Finch,. We stopped at a few known places for this beautiful bird but

without success. It was already late and we had gone a long way into the valley. We had 2

options: continue our search further into the valley or return to the best places at the

beginning of the valley. We opted for the second option and with success. On the same

place as we saw the “Mantaro” Wren, we found a Black-spectacled Brush-Finch. The bird

was very shy, but gave good views for a few times.

We arrived in Apaya late in the evening. Night in Apaya.

June 19th

2012

We started again at the forest south of the village and added a few species to our list:

White-throated Hawk, Tyrian Metaltail, Large-footed Tapaculo, Black-capped and

Superciliaried Hemispingus, Blue-backed Conebill, Blue-and-black Tanager, Masked

Flowerpiercer and Gray-browed and Slaty Brush-Finches. After lunch in Apaya, we drove

to the forest on the other side of the village, near Puente Carrizales. A must-see bird

overhere is Fire-throated Metaltail, which we quickly found near the bridge. An Undulated

Antpitta was calling on a slope near the road. We climbed up the slope and after waiting

and taping, we found the antpitta in the top of some bushes. Another one was calling

nearby. Also worth mentioning were a Red-crested Cotinga, Peruvian Wren, White-

collared Jay and Hooded Mountain-Tanager. It was already dark when we drove back to

Trip report – Peru 2012

Apaya. We halted a few times en route for owling but without success. Nevertless, we had

great views of a Swallow-tailed Nightjar. Night in Apaya.

June 20th

2012

Other groups usually take 3 to 4 days to reach Satipo (660 m.a.s.l.). However, we did not

have time to spent more days here. In addition, many of the species are also present at the

Manu Road, so we drove to Satipo in one day. We left Apaya very early and started

birdwatching at the first good forest. Because the road descends to the border of the

Amazonian forest, the avifauna changes all the time along the road. We alternated driving

by birdwatching at different altitudes. At higher altitude, we saw Andean Motmot, Blue-

banded Toucanet, Andean Solitaire, Black-eared Hemispingus, Short-billed Bush-

Tananger, Tricolored Brush-Finch and many more. Around noon, we were near Mariposa.

Here we had lunch in a small restaurant. Between Apaya and Mariposa, the forest is intact

and there are nearly no houses. However, between Mariposa and Satipo, there are more

settlements and the forest is already a little bit degraded. However, there are still many

birds around. Torrent Duck, Speckled Chachalaca, Rufous Motmot, Torrent Tyrannulet,

Inca Flycatcher, Peruvian Tyrannulet, Rufous-tailed Tyrant, Amazonian Umbrellabird,

Yellow-throated, Flame-faced and Paradise Tanager and Russet-backed, Dusky-green and

Crested Oropendola are just a few of our list.

A last stop just near Satipo for Spotted Rail was fruitless. Night in Satipo.

June 21st 2012

We spent some time at lower altitude and noticed some typical lowland species. Our drive

from Satipo to the junction Oxapampa-Villa Rica was always below 1000 m.a.s.l.. Along

this section, we drove near rivers most of the time. This resulted in five Fasciated Tiger-

Herons. Just outside Satipo, most of the forest is gone, but the small patches that are left

between the fields and houses hold Gray-necked Wood-Rail, Black-fronted Nunbird,

Emerald Toucanet, Chestnut-eared Aracari, Violaceous Jay, Turquoise Tanager, Epaulet

Oriole and Yellow-rumped Cacique. A stop near some reedbeds was good for Black-and-

white and Chestnut-bellied Seedeaters and Yellow-browed Sparrow. White-collared Swifts

were flying around; White-winged Swallows were flying over the river. We stopped also

on a stakeout for Black-billed Seed-Finch but we had no luck.

Once we drove over the bridge at the Rio Paucartambo, the road started climbing to Villa

Rica. Here we found an Ocellated Piculet and a few White-banded Swallows.

When we arrived in Villa Rica, we drove straight to Laguna Oconal (1500 m.a.s.l.). At the

lake, we saw the more common South American water and marsh birds like Least Grebe,

Anhinga, Limpkin and Purple and Common Gallinule. A Snail Kite was hunting over the

marshes. At the shores, we heard a Coraya Wren singing but it never came into view and

we saw three Olivaceous Greenlets and a Plain-crowned Spinetail.

Trip report – Peru 2012

Laguna Oconal

After visiting the lake, we drove to the forest northwest of the village (in the direction of

Bosque Shollet). A group of Swallow-tailed Kites was flying over, and so did a Blue-

headed Macaw. At the first part to Bosque Shollet, the forest is much degraded and there

are many tea-plantations. Neverthless, there are still many birds. We stopped a few times in

this section. We found Chestnut-breasted Coronet, White-bellied Hummingbird and

Sapphire-spangled Emerald. Also around were Buff-throated Foliage-gleaner, Streaked

Xenops and White-winged Tanager, amongst many others. Top of the bill was of course a

Creamy-bellied Antwren that gave excellent close-distance views (1700 m.a.s.l.). When we

drove closer to Bosque Shollet (2360 m.a.s.sl.) the forest became more pristine and where

the road reaches the highest point, the forest was great. We were already late but a few

birds were still active. We had Cinnamon Flycatcher, Glossy-black Thrush, Slate-throated

and Spectacled Redstart and Black-capped Hemispingus. Once dark, we started playing the

call of Cloud-forest Screech-Owl. Soon, a bird reacted. It was calling at a distance, on the

other side of a gully. We taped from time to time and after some time, the owl was calling

closer to us. Still it was not possible to see it. After about 20 minutes, it was calling on the

other side again. For more than an hour, the screech-owl kept on calling. We used the

telescope to scan the trees over the gully and then, Erwin found it. We had amazing scope-

views of the seldom seen Cloud-forest Screech-Owl and we even could make, I agree, very

bad photographs. Night in Villa Rica.

June 22nd

2012

Before noon, we planned a visit to Hacienda El Carmen. This coffee plantation is located

south of Villa Rica. Nowadays, they often grow coffee plants that no longer need shadow.

Therefore, many of the big trees in the plantations are cut down. Most probably, this will

affect birdlife in the plantations. Our first impression was rather disappointing but at the

end, we did see many good birds at the hacienda.

Trip report – Peru 2012

Hacienda El Carmen

Best species was a male Cerulean-capped Manakin. Other nice observations were three

Red-throated Caracara’s flying over, four Black-capped Parakeets that were feeding in a

tree just in front of us, Lineated Woodpecker, Strong-billed and Montane Woodcreepers,

Stripe-chested Antwren and Streak-necked Flycatcher. Just before noon, we drove to

Bosque Shollet.

It was great roadside birding here. Soon after we arrived at the forest, we heard a Bay

Antpitta calling close to the road. We sat down in the bushes, while taping and waiting for

the antpitta to appear. The bird hopped by a few times and we had great views. A Chestnut

Antpitta popped up only once, without calling. Other birds we oberved were Black-tailed

Trainbearer, Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Streaked Tuftedcheek, Long-tailed Antbird,

Black-eared Hemispingus, Gray-hooded Bush Tanager, Capped Conebill and Blue-capped,

Yellow-scarfed and Blue-necked Tanagers. Late in the afternoon, we started walking down

in the direction of Oxapampa.

Bird activity was rather low. A few of the species we noticed were Reddish Hermit,

Collared Inca and Rufous-tailed Tyrant. Night in Oxapampa (1800 m.a.s.l.).

June 23rd

2012

We left Oxapampa very early. Our plan was to visit Bosque Shollet again. However, on our

way, we got telephone from Gunnar, who suggested driving to Pampa Hermosa (San

Ramon). The plan was to arrive there around 8 o’clock to have a few hours for birding

before the temperature got too high. Unluckily, due to road works, we lost nearly 2 hours.

These works were near the place where we searched before for Black-billed Seed-Finch.

We only found two Chestnut-bellied Seed-Finch. We walked up a sidetrack, where we had

a Gray-breasted Sabrewing.

When we arrived in San Ramon, it was already too hot for birdwatching. We spent some

time along the entrance road to Pampa Hermosa (900 m.a.s.l.). We observed only a few

birds.A Bluish-fronted Jacamar was the only lifer. Sunbittern and Stripe-chested Antwren

were also nice to see.

Trip report – Peru 2012

Leaving Pampa Hermosa

Soon after we left San Ramon in the direction of Lake Junin, the road started climbing. On

the way, birding was very slow. Most interesting were a Black-billed Shrike-Tyrant and

one Mountain Caracara. When we arrived at Lake Junin (4100 m.a.s.l.) after a long drive, it

was less than an hour before sunset. We drove to the east side of the lake. The landscape

was impressive.

Sunset on the borders of Lake Junin Lake Junin early morning

Scanning the lake was good for many Silvery Grebes and Slate-colored Coots. On the

shore, we had a Lesser Yellowlegs, a few Puna Snipes, many Puna Ibises and two Black-

billed Shrike-Tyrants. Our first night above 4000 m.a.s.l.. Erwin and I only had a mild

headache. Nevertheless, Tom was very ill. A combination of high altitude sickness and an

infection gave him a very bad night. Night in Junin.

June 24th

2012

It was cold in the morning when we arrived in Ondores. We met Cesar, our guide, at the

office of the local environmental protection organisation. The plan was to start with Black

(Junin) Rail. The water level of the lake was rather high forcing the rails to stay in the

wetlands on the border of the lake. When the water level is lower, they can rather be found

on the many islands in the lake. This meant we had good chances to observe this secretive

species. We searched in the marshes between Ondores and the lake. When we entered the

marshes, a few Plumbeous Rails flew away. Cesar had an old-style tape recorder but this

Trip report – Peru 2012

worked out very well. Soon after he started taping, a Black Rail was responding. We placed

the tape recorder on the other side of an open place in the vegetation. Soon, we saw the rail

passing by in the tunnel in the vegetation. We moved the recorder a few times and could

see a Black Rail two times more. There were a few other Black Rails calling at close range,

suggesting this species is not that rare on this place.

Junin Rail habitat with Ondores in the background. Cesar is having breakfast, Julio is cooking.

After breakfast in the field, we drove northwarth from Ondores to the boat of Cesar. We

got onto the lake to search for Junin Grebe. It took awhile before we could identify one.

Most of the grebes were at far distance and were identified as Silvery Grebe but one of the

birds that came close enough made it possible to identify it as a Junin Grebe.

Waterfowl and other birds were abundant on and near the lake. We noticed large numbers

of Andean Goose, Puna and Yellow-billed Teals, Crested Ducks, Silvery Grebes, Puna

Ibis, Common Gallinule and Slate-colored Coots beside a few Chilean Flamingos, Puna

Snipe and Andean Lapwings. A few of the other birds we saw were Cinereous Harrier,

Aplomado Falcon, Black-winged Ground-Dove, Black-breasted Hillstar, Common Miner,

Plain-breasted Earthcreeper, White-winged Cinclodes, Junin Canastero, Short-billed and

Correndera Pipits, many Peruvian and Ash-breasted Sierra-Finches and Bright-rumped

Yellow-Finches.

At 2 o’clock in the afternoon, it was time to drive in the direction of La Quinua (3700

m.a.s.l.). Along the way, we did not see many birds and nothing special.

The habitat in La Quinua exists of bushes and scrub. Along the river, a White-capped

Dipper was fouraging. Erwin and I searched in the bushes left of the road. There was not

much activity. Tom searched in the bushes over the river. We found a few Giant Conebills

and two Baron’s Spinetails. Other good birds were Black Metaltail, Stripe-headed Antpitta,

Pied-crested and Tufted Tit-Tyrants, Rufous-breasted and White-browed Chat-Tyrant and

Red-crested Cotinga.

The next place we wanted to stop was a stakeout for Rufous-backed Inca-Finch.

Nevertheless, it was already too late to reach this place before dark. So we changed our

plan to stay overnight in Huánuco. We stayed in a hotel north of Chicrin.

June 25th

2012

The place for the Inca-Finch was not that far from the hotel. On a sidetrack at the left side

of the road, we drove uphill. We started birdwatching in very dry habitat. Soon, we found a

pair of these beautifull finches in the dry scrub. They stayed into cover all the time but

finally we saw them well. On the place, birdactivity was very low. The only other birds we

saw here were an American Kestrel and a Black-crested and Yellow-billed Tit-Tyrant.

Trip report – Peru 2012

We drove through Huánuco (1900 m.a.s.l.), straight to the startpoint of the Paty Trail (2470

m.a.s.l.). We arrived there already at 10h00. The rest of the day, until dark, we walked

around on this famous steep trail through nice forest. This steep trail is on a ridge that goes

through nice forest. At some places, the forest is cut down. A few of the species that we

observed were Masked Trogon, Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan, Pearled Treerunner,

Streaked Tuftedcheek, Olive-backed and Montane Woodcreeper, Trilling and Tschudi’s

Tapaculo, Streak-necked Flycatcher, Black-and-white Becard, White-eared Solitaire,

Capped Conebill, Hooded, Lacrimose and Blue-winged Mountain-Tanagers and Saffron-

crowned, Flame-faced, Beryl-spangled and Blue-and-black Tanagers. Night in Huánuco.

June 26th

2012

We left Huánuco very early in the morning. At sunrise, we arrived at the Carpish Tunnel

(2700 m.a.s.l.). Behind the tunnel, there is a track going along and in a few nice patches of

forest.

Carpisch tunnel with start of the track

Nevertheless recently, some patches of forest were cut down. We met a farmer who was

cleaning the last traces of forest on his new land, to breed his first potatoes. In the

afternoon, we went to the Paty Trail again. Amethyst-throated Sunangel, Emerald-bellied

Puffleg, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Powerful Woodpecker,

Bay Antpitta, Rufous-vented Tapaculo, Black-capped and Peruvian Tyrannulets, Smoky

Bush-Tyrant, Green-and-black Fruiteater, Superciliaried and Drab Hemispingus, Brown-

flanked Tanager (only seen by Tom), Blue-backed Conebill, Plushcap and Slaty Brush-

Finch are just a selection of the many birds that we saw. Night in Huánuco.

June 27th

2012

We left our hotel at 3 o’clock, for Bosque Unchog (3600 m.a.s.l.). The journey, on a

bumpy track, took us little more then two hours. It was still dark when we parked the car.

When we got out of the car, we immediately heard two Andean Snipes. They were

displaying above the alpine meadows. As soon as it got light, they stopped calling and

flying. We had a local guide at Bosque Unchog. A 14-year old boy, who is living in the

only house at Bosque Unchog, guides birdwatchers. He only speaks Spanish. We took the

trail on the left of the house. After we walked over the plateau for about 1.3 km, the trail

was going down in a small patch of forest.

Trip report – Peru 2012

Bosque Unchog, meadows at higher parts Trail descends at the cross

This is one of the best places to see Rufous-browed Hemispingus. We did not see it, but

here we got our only White-chinned Thistletail. A few Coppery Metaltails were flying

around. We walked further on the ridge and saw good patches of forest in the gully on both

sides of it. We found a rock on the right side of the trail from where we had excellent views

over the forest. Waiting for an hour did not bring us many birds. We decided to continue on

the trail in the forest. It was also rather calm here. Neverthless, we found a Golden-collared

Tanager together with some Lacrimose and Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanagers. We

decided to go back to the rock. Now, there was more activity. We saw several good birds

fouraging and passing by. A Bay-vented Cotinga was sitting in the top of a tree on the other

side of the gully and we noticed a few Parduscos. Other birds were a Neblina Tapaculo,

Ochraceous-breasted Flycatcher, a pair of Barred Fruiteaters, Chestnut-bellied Mountain-

Tanager, Yellow-scarfed Tanager and a White-collared Jay. In the evening, we returned to

the car. When we passed the plateau, we saw a Fasciated Tiger-Heron, Paramo Pipit and

White-browed Conebill. Camping at Bosque Unchog.

June 28th

2012

In the morning, we heard three Andean Snipes calling, but we did not see any. Later during

the day, we tried to flush one by walking near the bushes but without success. At first light,

we were at the first patch of forest. Again, the number of birds was low. We sat and waited

on the rock. Although the day before it was sunny all the time, we now suffered from mist

from time to time. When the mist disappeared, we had good views. We observed a few

small flocks with the same species as the day before. A Large-footed Tapaculo was singing

in the dense cover below the rock. Coppery Metaltails were flying by from time to time. In

the afternoon, bird activity decreased. To our feeling, it did not have much sense to stay

longer overhere. On the plateau, we added Red-rumped Bush-Tyrant to the list. We walked

back to the camping place and packed up our stuff. We left Bosque Unchog without seeing

two of our main targets, the Hemispingus and Golden-backed Mountain-Tanager.

In the afternoon, we watched birds on the track that leads to Bosque Unchog. Along this

track there is nearly no forest left. It is turned into agricultural fields. Nevertheless, this still

is a good place to find Brown-flanked Tanager. We alternated driving and birdwatching. At

one of Andrew’s coordinates, we found a Brown-flanked Tanager. We also had a Rusty

Flowerpiercer and we had good sightings of several Band-tailed Pigeons in the fields.

Night in Huánuco.

June 29th

2012

Trip report – Peru 2012

We needed nearly the whole day to travel 320 km through the mountains to our destination

Yungas (2480 m.a.s.l.). We left Huánuco at 5 o’clock in the morning. The highest altitude

we passed was about 4600 m.a.s.l.. At this high pass, we spent an hour to search for

Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe. We only found a few Gray-breasted Seedsnipes. New for the trip

was Taczanowski's Ground-Tyrant and Many-striped Canastero. A group of more than 50

Andean Flickers was a remarkable observation.

High at 4600 masl

Later, we stopped at Conocha Lake (4000 m.a.s.l.). There were many birds on the lake,

though nothing special.

When we arrived in Yungas, it was not dark yet. We had time to spend the last hour of

daylight on the old cemetery. Many hummingbirds were fouraging on flowering plants. We

noticed Spot-throated Hummingbird, Purple-collared Woodstar and Sparkling Violetear. In

the dry fields, small flocks of Peruvian Meadowlarks were around. Night in Yungas.

June 30th

2012

To get to the best birdwatching places in Llanganuco – Abra Portachuelo, we had to leave

Yungas at 4 o’clock in the morning. The scenery in the park was the most impressive of the

whole trip, with Mount Huascaran (6768 m.a.s.l.), the highest mountain of Peru,

dominating the park.

Trip report – Peru 2012

To go to Abra Portachuelo, we drove over the Punta Union Pass (4750 m.a.s.l.). On the

other side of this pass, there is nice Polylepis forest. It was 6h20 when we stopped the car

at the forest. Very soon, we saw the target bird of the day, a White-cheeked Cotinga. It was

sitting in the top of the trees, high up on the slopes. However, the bird did not stay long

enough for Tom. Just at the moment he looked through the telescope, the cotinga flew

away. Nevertheless, we had good hope to see one again. Actually, we still had the whole

morning. Erwin and I even climbed up to the bushes where the cotinga was before.

Nevertheless, we did not find one again. However, birdwatching was great at this place.

We found many good species like Ancash Tapaculo, Tit-like Dacnis, Plain-tailed

Warbling-Finch and Rufous-eared Brush-Finch.

Early afternoon, we drove back. We planned to birdwatch the rest of the day along the

lakes and on a few other places along the track towards Yungas. Unfortunately, on our way

down, the rear suspension broke off. Except from a jack, we did not have any equipment on

board to fix it. Nevertheless, Julio started trying to fix the problem. We stopped one of the

few busses that passed by. They gave us an iron wire and a rope. For Julio, this was

sufficient to bundle the suspension. We had our doubts about his plan, however driving

very slowly at a speed of 20 km/hour; we arrived in Yungas in the evening. Later on, Julio

found someone to weld the suspension. We lost an afternoon for birding but at the end of

the day, we were happy that we could continue our trip the next day. Night in Yungas.

Fixed!

July 1st 2012

Trip report – Peru 2012

We did not to wake up very early. First place to visit was Pueblo Libre, along the main

road just near Yungas. It did not take us long to get our targets. Immediately after we

stopped at the spot, we heard a Creamy-breasted Canastero singing from a big cactus. We

had great views of this one and a second bird also popped up. In addition, we found two

Raimondi's Yellow-Finches and three Mitred Parakeets.

Our next stop was at a small, semi-dessert area, north of Caraz and near the Rio Santa. We

had Purple-collared Woodstar, Spot-throated Hummingbird, Tawny-crowned Pygmy-

Tyrant, Band-tailed Sierra-Finch and Drab Seedeater on this place.

The next visit was Chao. It was a long drive, luckily through an amazing landscape. All the

time, we followed the Rio Santa on a small, bad road, through big valleys and small gullies.

At Tanguche, we drove away from the river and out of the mountains, in the direction of

the sea. From then on, the land turned over in sand desert. This habitat has been transferred

into large fruit tree plantations at large scale. On many areas, new irrigation systems were

constructed.

It was early afternoon when we arrived in the dunes near Chao (30 m.a.s.l.). Not much of

the original habitat is left on the place but the specialities are still present, though in rather

small numbers.

Chao dunes

First, we went to some small bushes in the dunes. As soon as we entered the bushes, we

flushed a Band-winged Nightjar. There were many small birds around. We identified

Parrot-billed Seedeaters. Deeper in the scrub, we found two “Chao” Necklaced Spinetails

of an undescribed subspecies, two Fasciated and two Superciliated Wren. In the top of the

bushes, we found two Rufous Flycatchers and at the end of the area, a Tumbes Tyrant gave

great views. Also around in the area were a Peruvian Thick-knee, Dark-billed Cuckoo,

Coastal Miner, Mouse-colored Tyrannulet and Short-tailed Field Tyrant. We released a

Blue-and-white Swallow, who was stuck with his wing in a blade of grass.

Next stop in the dunes was approximately 1.5 km away from the first site. Overhere, nearly

all the dunes are transferred in agriculture fields. Only a few small patches are present. We

found a Cinereous Finch and another Rufous Flycatcher. In a canal, we saw two Chestnut-

throated Seedeaters. Last target was Peruvian Plantcutter. We played tape from time to time

but now reaction at all. The sun was going down and we returned to the car. At a distance,

in backlight, we saw a silhouette of a bird in top of a tree. It stayed just long enough for us

to recognize a Peruvian Plantcutter. We run to the other side of the field. From here, we

had good light conditions. We played the tape and immediately, two Peruvian Plantcutters

Trip report – Peru 2012

were sitting in the top of a tree. We ended the day with great views of an endangered

species. Night in Trujillo.

July 2nd

2012

At 4 o’clock, we left Trujillo for Sinsicap. We arrived here just after 6h00. At an altitude of

2500 m.a.s.l., behind the village, we started birdwatching. We walked inside a small gully.

Soon we heard a Unicolored Tapaculo singing in dense scrub. We found a good place to

look through the scrub and saw the little fellow. Further, we had a flock of Bay-crowned

Brush-Finchs and a few Piura Chat-Tyrants. Sparkling Violetear, Speckled and Amazilia

Hummingbirds were flying around. When we were at the start of the trail again, we had a

Three-banded Warbler and an Elegant Crescentchest. Along the track, we walked in the

direction of the village again. Several Golden-bellied Grosbeaks and White-edged Orioles

were around.

Further down, we heard a Russet-bellied Spinetail calling. We climbed up the slope and

found three of them hopping around.

We passed the village again by car. We stopped at the bridge over a river. On a wire above

the road, we discovered a Baird's Flycatcher. We walked upstream in the riverbed. We saw

a Collared Antshrike, three Hepatic Tanagers and a Black Phoebe. On the road, there was a

Peruvian Pygmy-Owl. Four Pacific Parrotlets sat down near the road, closer to Simbal.

In Simbal, we turned left in the direction of Huamacucho.

En route to Huamacucho

The road was going up in the Andes again. We went over 4000 m.a.s.l.. It was a long drive

on rather bad road. We passed Samne, Agallpampa and a few other small villages. There

were roadworks from time to time. We lost a few hours by waiting due to these roadworks.

Nearly the whole distance between Simbal and Huamacucho, they are constructing

concrete roads, so in the future the travel time will be much shorter. We did not see many

birds en route. A Many-striped Canastero was the best we saw. It was already dark when

we arrived in Huamacucho (3200 m.a.s.l.). Night in Huamacucho.

Trip report – Peru 2012

July 3rd

2012

The local people gave us the advice not to leave the city to go to El Molino in the night.

The road is used for drug traffic and there were robberies in the past. Because of that, we

left only at 5 o’clock. Although the distance from Huamacucho to El Molino is not far, it

took about 3 hours and 45 minutes to reach the small town of El Molino (3400 m.a.s.l.) on

a very bad road. Probably in the raining season, it is not possible to reach the place without

a 4-wheel-drive.

The place for Purple-backed Sunbeam is a small valley a little bit further than the village.

As soon as we got out of the car, we found our first lifer. A Rainbow Starfrontlet was

pearched on a branche. We walked up the trail on the flank of the valley. We found our

first Purple-backed Sunbeam very soon. Finally, we saw about eight different birds, such as

Unicolored Tapaculo, Jelski's Chat-Tyrant, Black-crested Warbler and Rufous-chested

Tanager.

We did not stay in El Molino for a long time. From the moment, we saw our targets, we

returned in the direction of Huamacucho on the same bad road. Black-fronted Ground-

Tyrant was the only new bird we saw along the road. We did not have to drive all the way

to Huamocucho. Once we were on the paved road again, at Laguna Sausacocha, we turned

north to San Marcos. This time, we drove on a very good paved road all the time. It did not

take long before we reached San Marcos. It was not dark yet, so we drove to the stakeout

for Great Spinetail north of the village. Spot-throated Hummingbirds were flying around,

together with Amazilia Hummingbirds. We heard a few Fasciated Wrens and we saw a

Streak-throated Bush-Tyrant. Probably it was already too late to have more activity. Night

in San Marcos (2270 m.a.s.l.).

July 4th

2012

At first light, we were in the gully again.

Great Spinetail searching

We walked up the trail where it was great birding. We flushed four Andean Tinamous and

we had a few White-winged Black-Tyrants. A few of the species we saw were Tropical

Trip report – Peru 2012

Gnatcatcher of a distinctive subspecies, Masked Yellowthroat of a distinctive subspecies

and Dull-colored Grassquit. Best bird we saw was a Buff-bridled Inca-Finch. Once again,

we had no luck with the spinetail. It was late before noon and temperature was getting high

in the gully. In the meantime, bird activity became low. We decided to give up for the

spinetail and we drove to Baños del Inca.

On the way, we got telephone from Gunnar. There were demonstrations in Cajamarca area

against new mines and the police shot three of the demonstrators to death. Gunnar’s advice

was to avoid the road to Balsas because there was a chance that the situation would explode

the next days. We discussed the situation and finally, we made the decision to cancel the

trip to this region. We had to give up many endemics, but anyway we will visit northern

Peru again. As an alternative, we decided to go to Bosque de Frejolillo.

It was still safe to go to Rio Chonta (2800 m.a.s.l.), so we continued our way to Baños del

Inca and from there we took the road to Rio Chonta. Target on this place was the enigmatic

Gray-bellied Comet. We could find a male of this splendid hummingbird. The bird was

flying up-and-down between two flowering trees. Also around were Giant and Spot-

throated Hummingbirds, Lineated Woodpecker, Baron's Spinetails and Rusty

Flowerpiercer. We returned to San Marcos, since we had decided not to stay in Cajamarca

because of the problems,. There, we had time to go to the gully again. We added Peruvian

Pygmy-Owl and Purple-collared Woodstar to the area’s list. Once again, we saw no

spinetail. Night in San Marcos.

July 5th

2012

In the morning, we returned to the gully. Our fourth attempt and this time we succeeded.

Finally, we found Great Spinetail. Three of them were calling in the bushes.

When satisfied, we returned to the car. Next destination was Chiclayo.

We passed Cajamarca. We drove through the mountains passing San Juan, Magdalena and

Chilete. In Ciudad de Dios, we were on the Panamerican Highway. We turned to the north,

in the direction of Chiclayo. When we arrived in the city, we drove straight to the airport.

We had to change our tickets from Cajamarca, which took a while and costed a lot of

money.

From Chiclayo, we drove to Bosque Pomac. It is a rather short drive to this reserve. We

arrived here late afternoon. Pale-legged Hornero’s were common at the place. A flock of

Scarlet-backed Woodpeckers was hanging around. At down, five Lesser Nighthawks were

flying over the open areas. A Scrub Nightjar was hunting in the scrub. From Bosque Pomac

to Olmos, it was a two hours drive. We arrived early in the evening. Night in Olmos.

Trip report – Peru 2012

July 6th

2012

At 4h30, we left to Bosque de Frejolillo.

It is a short drive to the reserve. Along the entrance road, we saw six Scrub Nightjars in the

carlights. After we picked up the guide, we arrived at the birdwatching place at sunrise.

The place for White-winged Guan is a wooded valley. Very soon, we encountered the first

ones. In total, we had ten of them. Bosque de Frejolillo was very rich in birds. Many new

species were noticed. A selection of the most important observed birds is Bicolored Hawk,

Red-masked Parakeet, Peruvian Pygmy-Owl, Ecuadorian Trogon, Scarlet-backed

Woodpecker, Elegant Crescentchest, Gray-and-white Tyrannulet, Black-and-white Becard,

White-tailed Jay, Plumbeous-backed Thrush, Gray-and-gold Warbler, Black-capped

Sparrow, White-headed Brush-Finch and White-edged and Yellow-tailed Orioles. From the

moment we left the valley in the direction of the car-parking place, the vegetation changed

into rather dry scrub. Here, we had several other species like Pacific Parrotlet, Tumbes

Hummingbird, Necklaced Spinetail and Tumbes Sparrow. When we were nearly at the

main road again, four Peruvian Thick-knees were walking in the dry fields. At 2 o’clock in

the afternoon, we left Frejolillo and we returned to Bosque Pomac. Along the way, we

stopped at a marshy area. A Spotted Rail was a good write-in. Harris’s Hawk, Crested

Caracara and Pearled Kite were new raptors on the list.

When we arrived at Bosque Pomac, we did not have much time left because it was already

evening. We hurried to a stakeout for Tumbes Swallow. We left the car and ran up a high

sand dune. From here, we could see four of them. Other nice observations here were

Coastal Miner, Rufous Flycatcher, White-tailed Jay and Cinereous Finch. It was already

dark when we left Pomac to Chiclayo. Night in Chiclayo.

July 7th

2012

At 8h30, we had our flight to Lima. At arrival, we got a taxi to Gunnar’s house in

Miraflores. The rest of the day, Gunnar drove us around. We spent some time in Huascar

Park and Pantanos de Villa. Plan of the day was to find a last lifer for the trip. In Huascar

Park, we could have Oasis Hummingbird. However, we did not find one. We had several

Vermillion Flycatcher, the dark form, and Chestnut-throated and Parrot-billed Seedeaters.

From here, we drove to Pantanos de Villa. We had a short walk in the dryer area of the

reserve. Many shorebirds and gulls were resting. We had Black-necked Stilts, Killdeers,

Andean, Gray and Belcher’s Gulls, Inca Terns and Black Skimmers. We flushed one

Yellowish Pipit and a large flock Grassland Yellow-Finchs. The last stop was at the bird

rescue centre in the reserve. They had a Ringed Storm-Petrel that was found in the suburbs

of Lima. A great bird but it would have been greater if we had seen it on our pelagic. In the

afternoon, it was time to go to the airport. Our flight to Amsterdam left at 20h15.

July 8th

2012 We arrived in Amsterdam – Schiphol at 15h40.

** Koepcke's Screech-Owl Megascops koepckeae 18/06/2012 - Andamarca Valley - 1 at his daytime roosting place.

Endemic to Peru where found on the west slope of the Andes and in dry intermontane valleys. The status of the very gray southern population (Satipo Road and further southwards) is still unclear. Most people would agree that these birds are at least an undescribed subspecies but there are some indications that they are even a new species; “Apurimac Screech-Owl”. This owl is quite common in the semi-dry valleys of central Peru.

** “Millpo” Tapaculo Scytalopus sepc. Endemic 2/07/2012 - Sinsicap - 1 3/07/2012 - El Molino - 2 seen and 1 heard This Tapaculo has been known for over 25 years and was collected near Millpo in Pasco department. It is mentioned in ‘Birds of the High Andeas’ by Fjeldså and Krabbe which published in 1991. It seems that the discoverer of the species will never describe it; more likely one of the leading experts in Tapaculos must perform this task and prepare a manuscript…. Millpo Tapaculo belongs to the complex that used to be called Andean Tapaculo, which was later split by Schulenberg and Krabbe into a number of species along the Andes from Venezuela to Patagonia. This form was not named and consequently not included in the split. This Scytalopus is endemic to central Peru.

** “Mantaro” Wren Pheugopedius spec. 18/06/2012 - Andamarca Valley - 2 seen and 3 heard.

This undescribed taxon has not yet been collected. The spotting below is reminiscent of that found on the underparts of some races of the geographically quite remote Plain-tailed Wren P. euophrys but the voice is quite different from the latter (especially compared to the southernmost race schulenbergi), and moreover this birds had some faint barring on the tail. The song is not unlike that of Inca Wren P. eisenmanni (so far only known to occur farther south, in the Vilcanota and Vilcabamba mountains on both sides of the Urubamba valley) but the latter has plain underparts and is found in an area separated from the deep Apurimac Valley, a major biogeographic barrier.

Coraya Wren Pheugopedius coraya 21/06/2012 - Villa Rica (Lago Oconal and Bosque Shollet) HO - 1 heard only. Reacting immediately on the tape but stayed far away. A fence made it impossible to go closer. No other reacting on tape despite searching for hours.
