Observe and study exceptional bird species
Do you own a life list? Embark on a voyage that takes you well off the beaten path, to destinations that will excite your imagination like no other. A Silversea Expedition will inspire your sense of adventure, introducing you to mesmerising landscapes and exceptional wildlife. You’ll encounter wild animals, exotic flora and fauna, fascinating cultures, and large varieties of bird species.
The experiences you’ll have on your voyage aboard Silver Discoverer, Silver Explorer or Silver Galapagos will create a lifetime of memories — ones that you’ll share with all your friends and family when you return home.
did you know?
• The first classification of birds was developed by Francis Willughby and John Ray and published in the 1676 volume, Ornithologiae
• There are about 10,000 bird species, and only a small number of people have seen more than 7,000
• In 1971 Ted Parker travelled around North America and saw 626 species in one year. This record was beaten by Neil Hayward of Cambridge (USA) in 2013 who saw 749 species
• From 2008 the top life list has been held by Tom Gullick, an Englishman. In 2012 he became the first birdwatcher to log over 9,000 species
At Silversea Expeditions we do our best to preserve the welfare of birds and their environment, and therefore ask our guests to follow certain birdwatching etiquette, such as limiting the use of photography and playback devices to mitigate stress caused to birds, as well as maintaining distance away from nests and nesting colonies. For an in-depth experience, we recommend you bring your own binoculars with you.

Jonathan RossouwExpedition Leader
Jonathan is one of the world’s most experienced expedition leaders, having guided wildlife trips in over 150 countries on all seven continents. He started a birding travel company before assisting intrepid travellers Peter Harrison and Shirley Metz in expanding their global portfolio of natural history destinations. An accomplished photographer, Jonathan’s images have appeared in many books and magazines, and he has co-authored birding site guides to Uganda, Southern Africa and Madagascar.
dr Samuel Temidayo OsinubiOrnithologist
Dayo studies the behaviour of birds in relation to their environment, and brings an infectious passion to bird watching. He has a MSc in Conservation Biology and a PhD in Ecology. He presently works for BirdLife International and is based at the West African Sub-Regional Office in Accra, Ghana. He works as the Coordinator of the African-Eurasian Migratory Landbirds Working Group. Dayo has a healthy sense of adventure, a wide range of interests and his goal is always to experience diverse forms of nature and cultures.
dr danae Sheehan Conservation Ecologist
As a conservation ecologist, Dr Sheehan holds a particular interest in ornithology and landscape ecology. For the last 14 years, she has overseen a migratory Africa-Eurasia bird program for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. She has published several scientific papers and delivered presentations at numerous international conferences. Danae’s love of the natural world and remote places is also reflected through her passion for art and photography.
It’s one thing to visit a place, but it’s another to immerse yourself in it. Not just to see the sights, but to meet the people, understand the history, drink in the culture, and get to know the wildlife.
Each Silversea Expeditions voyage is led by a team of 11 experts*: marine biologists, naturalists, anthropologists, geologists and historians, hand-picked for their knowledge, passion, warmth and friendliness. Here is a sample of the Expedition Team you will meet onboard Silver Discoverer, Silver Explorer and Silver Galapagos.Your Expedition Leader and Captain will work together to ensure opportunities for adventure and exploration are the best possible, taking into account prevailing weather activity.
*The Expedition team members scheduled for these voyages can be subject to change or cancellation.
