Day 1 Group members met at the airport and boarded a flight to Sri Lanka to start their tour. Day 2 The flight arrived at Colombo airport at 4.00am, and we left the airport at 5.15pm. En-route to Kitulgala we stopped at Awissawella for a leg stretch and encountered Oriental Magpie Robin and Cattle Egret. We reached the Plantation hotel at 7.45am and had our breakfast and left for the Kitulgala rainforest (Mahakandarawa) by crossing a river in a dug out traditional canoe. We returned to the hotel for lunch and at 4.30pm crossed over to a secluded village on a hanging bridge for more birding. Our sightings for the day included Little Cormorant, Indian Pond-heron, Little Egret, Asian Openbill, Glossy Ibis, Black Eagle, Legge’s Hawk-eagle, Rock Pigeon, Spotted Dove, Asian Emerald Dove, Sri Lanka Green-pigeon, Green Imperial Pigeon, Sri Lanka Hanging-parrot, Alexandrine Parakeet, Layard’s Parakeet, Asian Koel, Greater Coucal, Serendib Scops-owl, Crested Treeswift, Indian Swiftlet, Little Swift, Malabar Trogon, Stork-billed Kingfisher, White-throated Kingfisher, Blue-tailed Bee-Eater, Chestnut-headed Bee-eater, Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, Brown-headed Barbet, Yellow-fronted Barbet, Black-rumped Flameback, Sri Lanka Swallow, Scarlet Minivet, Bar-winged Flycatcher-shrike, Black-capped Bulbul, Red-vented Bulbul, Yellow-browed Bulbul, Square-tailed Bulbul, Jerdon’s Leafbird, Golden-fronted Leafbird, Spot-winged Thrush, Common Tailorbird, Green Warbler, Tickell’s Blue Flycatcher, Brown-breasted Flycatcher, Asian Brown Flycatcher, Black-naped Monarch, Indian Paradise Flycatcher, Dark-fronted Babbler, Orange-billed Babbler, Yellow-billed Babbler, Purple-rumped Sunbird, Oriental White-Eye, Black-hooded Oriole, White-bellied Drongo, Sri Lanka Drongo, House Crow, Large-billed Crow, Common Myna, Sri Lanka Myna, Southern Hill Myna, White-rumped Munia and Black-throated Munia along with Toque Macaque, Ruddy Mongoose, Indian Palm Squirrel, Grizzled Giant Squirrel and Common House Gecko. We returned to the hotel at 6.30pm and did the checklist at 7.15pm followed by dinner. Day 3 We had a pre-breakfast walk at 6.30am around the Kitulgala village and returned to the hotel for breakfast at 8.30am. After breakfast we left for the Kitulgala rainforest again and returned to the hotel at 1.30pm for lunch. After relaxing in the hotel, we set off once again for another bird walk in the surrounding mountain area of the Kitulgala village. Our sightings for the day included Black Bittern, Intermediate Egret, Black-headed Ibis, Oriental Honey-buzzard, Crested Serpent-eagle, Crested Goshawk, Shikra, Rufous-bellied Eagle, White-breasted Waterhen, Chestnut-backed Owlet, Brown-backed Needletail, Common Kingfisher, Black-backed Dwarf-kingfisher, Lesser Yellownape, Crimson-backed Flameback, Grey Wagtail, White-browed Bulbul, Common Iora, Blyth’s Reed Warbler, Brown-capped Babbler, Velvet-fronted Nuthatch, Brown Shrike, Grey Mongoose, Asian Water Monitor, Green Garden Lizard, Sri Lanka Kangaroo Lizard and Common Skink. We returned to the hotel at 6.30pm and did the checklist at 7.15pm followed by dinner and the briefing for the next day. Day 4 Once again we had a pre-breakfast birding session which started at 5.30am and we visited a rubber/tea plantation situated on a mountain. We encountered Plum-headed Parakeet, Layard’s Parakeet, Black-capped Bulbul, Chestnut-headed Owlet, Crimson-backed Flameback and other birds seen before. We returned to the hotel at 9.00am and had our breakfast and checked out of the hotel. We reached the Blue Magpie Lodge in Sinharaja at 2.30pm and had our lunch and relaxed. At 4.30pm we did a small bird walk around the hotel and our sightings included Cinnamon Bittern, Brahminy Kite, Besra, Crested Hawk-eagle, Sri Lanka Junglefowl, Rose-ringed Parakeet, Asian Palm-swift, Crimson-fronted Barbet, Barn Swallow, Small Minivet, Large Cuckooshrike, Black-headed Cuckooshrike and White-throated Cuckooshrike. We returned to the hotel at 6.30pm and did the checklist at 7.30pm followed by dinner and the briefing for the next day. Day 5 At 5.30am with our packed breakfast and lunch we set out in jeeps to a village called Ketalapathana, which is situated in the buffer zone of the Sinharaja rainforest. Here we saw Sri Lanka Spurfowl, Indian Blue Robin, Green-billed Coucal, Spot-winged Thrush and Ashy-headed

Laughingthrush. At 8.00am we were at the Sinharaja Rainforest entrance and started our trek from this point. Birds we sighted inside the rainforest included Sri Lanka Wood-pigeon, Red-faced Malkoha, Brown-capped Woodpecker, Yellow-crowned Woodpecker, Sri Lanka Thrush, Sri Lanka Scimitar Babbler, Pale-billed Flowerpecker, Sri Lanka Blue-magpie and White-faced Starling. We returned to the hotel and did the checklist at 5pm and did the checklist followed by dinner. At 8.30pm a few of the group went in search of a few nocturnal birds and found Sri Lanka Frogmouth. We returned to the hotel at 9.30pm and called it a night.

Day 6 At 6.30am we had a pre-breakfast bird walk around the hotel and returned for breakfast at 8.30am. We checked out of the hotel and proceeded to Embilipitiya en-route stopping to see a few birds including Scaly-breasted and Tricolored Munias. We reached Centauria hotel and had our lunch at 1.00pm. At 2.30pm we set out visiting various tanks in the area and encountered many more new birds. Sightings for the day included Pin-tailed Snipe, Marsh Sandpiper, Green Sandpiper, Wood Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper, Little Tern, Gull-billed Tern, Whiskered Tern, Orange-breasted Green-pigeon, Banded Bay Cuckoo, Indian Scops-owl, Indian Nightjar, Jerdon’s Nightjar, Pied Kingfisher, Green Bee-eater, Coppersmith Barbet, Jerdon’s Bushlark, Ashy-crowned Sparrow-lark, Richard’s Pipit, Oriental Pipit, Yellow Wagtail, Sri Lanka Woodshrike, Indian Robin, Zitting Cisticola, Plain Prinia, Yellow-eyed Babbler, Purple Sunbird, Thick-billed Flowerpecker, House Sparrow, Streaked Weaver, Baya Weaver and Citrine Wagtail. We did the checklist at 7.45pm, followed by the next day briefing and dinner.

Day 7 We checked out of the hotel at 5.30am and set off for our jeep safari in Udawalawe National Park. Sightings here included Black-crowned Night-heron, Painted Stork, Eurasian Spoonbill, Black-winged Kite, Grey-headed Fish-eagle, Barred Buttonquail, Indian Thick-knee, Lesser Sand-plover, Pacific Golden-plover, Little Stint, Grey-bellied Cuckoo, Blue-faced Malkoha, Sirkeer Malkoha, Brown Fish-owl, Indian Roller, Eurasian Hoopoe, Malabar Pied-hornbill, Oriental Skylark, Blyth’s Pipit, Forest Wagtail, Grey-breasted Prinia, Ashy Prinia, White-browed Fantail, Cinereous Tit, Rosy Starling, Marshall’s Iora, Rain Quail, Grey Langur, Golden Jackal, Leopard, Asian Elephant, Spotted Deer, Sambar Deer, Water Buffalo, Ruddy Mongoose, Hard-shelled Terrapin, Land Monitor and Mugger Crocodile. We had lunch at a restaurant in Udawalawe and proceeded to Nuwara Eliya en-route stopping at the Ravana waterfalls. We reached our next hotel Leisure Village at 6.30pm and had our usual routine before calling it a night.

Day 8 We left the hotel at 5.30am and proceeded to Horton Plains. We saw Sri Lanka Bush Warbler, Dusky Blue Flycatcher, Sri Lanka White-eye, Indian Blackbird, Himalayan Buzzard, Yellow-eared Bulbul and Dusky Striped Squirrel. We returned to the hotel at 11.30am and had our lunch before setting out to Surrey Estate where we encountered Brown Wood-owl and other birds seen before. At 4.30pm we visited the Victoria Park and we encountered Pied Thrush, Indian Pitta and Kashmir Flycatcher. We returned to the hotel at 6.00pm and had dinner and called it a day.

Day 9 We did a pre-breakfast birding session in Bomuru Ella and encountered Kashmir Flycatcher, Dull-blue Flycatcher, Sri Lanka White-eye, Grey-headed Canary-flycatcher, Long-billed Sunbird, Forest Wagtail and White-bellied Sea-eagle. We returned to the hotel and after having our breakfast we checked out and proceeded to Kandy. After having our lunch at hotel Thilanka we set off to the Udawattakele sanctuary and encountered White-rumped Shama, Black-capped Bulbul, Muntjac, Wild Boar, Hard-shelled Terrapin and Rhino-horned Lizard. We returned to the hotel and did our usual evening routine of checklist, briefing and dinner.

Day 10 We had early breakfast at set off to the Hantane mountain range for some birding and saw Jungle Prinia, Tawny-bellied Babbler, Indian Golden Oriole and Ashy Woodswallow. We returned to the hotel at 9.30am and relaxed until lunch. We left Kandy at 1.30pm and proceeded to Katunayake and reached our hotel Tamarind Tree at 5.00pm after which we visited another hotel

garden nearby and encountered Black Bittern and Brown Boobook. We returned to the hotel at 7pm and enjoyed our leisurely dinner. Out of the 14 clients 10 stayed back for their extension while four set off to the airport in time to catch their flight back to the UK. Day 11 We had a pre-breakfast birding session in the Muturajawela swamp and amongst the many birds we encountered the new one we saw here was Clamorous Reed Warbler. We returned to the hotel at 8.30am, had our breakfast and checked out by 9.30am. We arrived at our next hotel in Weligama, Fisherman’s Bay Resort and had our lunch and relaxed in the hotel while enjoying the beautiful views of the Indian Ocean. At 3.30pm we left for the Kirala Kele sanctuary for birding and returned to the hotel for our checklist, briefing and dinner. Day 12 With our packed breakfast we set out of the hotel at 6.30am and reached the Mirissa harbour at 6.45am. Our sea excursion in search of the Blue Whales was very successful with sightings of two Blue Whales, a pod of about 30 Spinner Dolphins, Green Turtle and Bridled Tern. We returned to the hotel and had our lunch after which we checked out and proceeded to Tissamaharama. En-route we stopped at Hambantota and outside the Bundala National park for some birding. We reached the Rain Tree Hotel at 5.30pm and did our checklist followed by the next day’s briefing and dinner. Day 13 We left the hotel at 5.00am with our packed breakfast/lunch packs and had a full day safari inside the Yala National Park. Our new sightings included Ashy Drongo, Brahminy Starling and Indian Silverbill. During our morning session we saw two Leopards on the road and in the afternoon session we saw another one on the middle of the road and two fighting on a branch making the total number of Leopards seen five. We returned to the hotel at 5.00pm and relaxed until our dinner. Day 14 We once again left the hotel with a packed breakfast and visited the Bundala National park for another jeep safari. Our new sightings included Red-necked Stint and Red-rumped Swallow. After returning to the hotel we relaxed until 3.30pm before setting off for another birding session around the Tissa tank. Day 15 We did another pre-breakfast birding session around the Tissa tank and left the hotel after having our breakfast at 11.00am. En-route to the Airport we had lunch at Silver Ray restaurant. We reached the airport in time for our flight back to UK.
