Independent and Dependent Variables

Scientists use an experiment to search for cause and effect relationships in nature. In other words, they design an experiment so that changes to one item cause something else to change in a predictable way. These changing qualities are called variables. A variable is any factor, trait or condition that can exist in differing amounts or types. An experiment usually has three kinds of variables: independent, dependent and controlled.

Page 4: Biotechnology Virtual Lab.Day 2a

The scientist focuses their observations on the dependent variable to see how it responds to the change made to the independent variable. The change of the dependent variable is caused by and depends on the value of the independent variable. Experiments also have controlled variables. Controlled variables are factors that a scientist wants to remain constant (the same), and they must observe them as carefully as the dependent variables. Controlled variables are used to compare the dependent variable’s changes in experiment’s relationship and keep the tests fair.

DO YOU REMEMBER:1. What is a ECB?2. What are the four stages of

metamorphosis for the ECB?3. Why are they a pest to corn plants?4. What type of plant is the corn plant?5. What part of the corn plant is

pollinated?6. What is the formula for GLUCOSE?7. What biochemical reaction creates

GLUCOSE?8. Why did scientists want to create Bt

corn?

Page 6: Biotechnology Virtual Lab.Day 2a

9. What did the scientist take from the soil bacterium and genetically implant into the DNA of Corn plants?

10.What does CRY Protein do?11.Was this a viable solution to the

pest problem? Why or why not?12.What are the three types of

variables?13.What are two reasons scientist need

to have a “CONTROL Variable” in an experiment?

14.What variable changes or responds to a change?

SUMMARYBriefly describe the problem and solutions scientist have come up with to combat the ECB infestation. In your opinion is this a good solution or not? Why?

INDEPENDENT VS. DEPENDENT

1. The price of gas determines how much I will purchase.

4. The atomic number of an element is determined by the number of protons.

8. The volume of a cylinder depends on the radius of the base and height.

DEALING WITH DATATo Find the Average:

1.Add all known quantities2.Divide the total # of quantities you added together

For this Experiment:1.You will be adding 3 quantities and then dividing by 3.

2.You will be doing 8 different tests….READ the instructions carefully.

Variables:1)Independent Variable = Corn Type2)Dependent Variables – No infestation, Low infestation, High infestation.

COMPUTER LOGISTICSChoice:

1)Work with a partner from your table OR work individually.

2)A Computer will be ASSIGNED to you or the partnership.

3)You will use the same computer each day and are responsible for its well-being.

HOMEWORK1)Remind Parents about Back to School Night is TONIGHT – 6:00pm

2)Complete a minimum of 3 more pages in your IR tonight – due Friday at the beginning of class

3)We will be working in class on the Virtual Lab for the rest of the week – Due Date Change to 9/13.
