Focus ThemesExhibition keynotes
Dear Guest,
BIOTECHNICA 2011 consolidated the reputation of our event as
Europe’s leading trade fair for biotechnology and the life sciences. With
exhibitor numbers up by 24% and a positive response among visitors,
we could not ask for a better indicator of continued success. Together,
we can ensure that it will be even better next time and thus look forward
to an outstanding BIOTECHNICA 2013.
The new two-year schedule of BIOTECHNICA means that it is now more in tune with the innovation cycle
in the biotech sector. This change is also in line with the requests received from a majority of exhibitors.
The innovative concept of BIOTECHNICA – an effective and proven mix of exhibition, conference, network-
ing and careers platform – will continue to be a winning formula. In addition, together with the subsidiary
company Deutsche Messe Interactive, we will be offering new services to bring exhibitors together with
promising business leads at BIOTECHNICA 2013.
By focusing on the keynote themes – BioServices, Innovation in Food and Industrial Biotechnology –
BIOTECHNICA 2013 will tackle three of the most important topics facing biotech now and in the years
ahead. Special displays relating to these themes will create ideal conditions in which exhibitors and
visitors can meet and talk with experts and business contacts about trends and potential new business.
In short, BIOTECHNICA offers the ideal setting for networking between – and within – the business and
scientific communities.
We look forward to seeing you!

FOCUS THEMEBIOSERVICES
More information on this topic can be found on our website: www.biotechnica.de/en/bioservices
Sourcing expertise
The outsourcing of R&D assignments is a growing
trend in the biotech sector. Pharmaceutical and
biotech companies are increasingly relying on the
know-how of external partners and cooperation
in order to achieve their targets more quickly and
efficiently – regardless of whether the services
involve the production of active ingredients, phar-
maceutical research or licensing procedures.
BIOTECHNICA developed the BioServices platform
in order to bring service providers, companies and
research institutes together. The combination of
an exhibition and a forum for talks and discus-
sions gives exhibitors the perfect opportunity to
deliver information on innovative developments,
meet service providers, discuss potential coop-
eration and develop business networks.
BIOTECHNICA has clearly hit the target with its
focus theme BioServices. This is underlined by
the excellent turnout of exhibitors in 2011, when
over 150 (including 30 new exhibitors) took part.
Exhibitors from every field along the added-value
chain were able to exploit the benefits of their
trade fair participation and showcase their exper-
tise on the BioServices platform.

FOCUS THEMEINNOVATION IN FOOD
More information on this topic can be found on our website: www.biotechnica.de/en/foodbiotechnology
The right mix for a good performance
Demands for high-quality food, as well as concerns
about safe and sustainable food supplies, pose a
complex set of challenges to food biotechnology.
Food safety and food analysis are assuming a key
role within the biotech sector and consequently
have become a focus at BIOTECHNICA.
The focus theme “Innovation in Food” showcases
the most recent developments in food technol-
ogy, which range from innovative analysis tech-
niques to sophisticated foodstuff identification
techniques and efficient process technology. But
as well as providing a platform for technical inno-
vations, BIOTECHNICA also offers exhibitors and
visitors an ideal opportunity to meet and discuss
everything – from legal aspects to new research.
The focus theme presentation will be accompanied
by a symposium (held in English) and a themed
exhibition in Hall 9. Guided tours have been ar-
ranged for journalists and visitors. Thus visitors
are offered a perfect opportunity to discover new
horizons, while exhibitors will be able to realize
their full potential for partnerships and business.

FOCUS THEMEINDUSTRIAL BIOTECHNOLOGY
More information on this topic can be found on our website: www.biotechnica.de/en/industrialbiotech
Key to sustainable production
The predicted shortage of fossil fuels and rising
energy prices are just two of many factors that
suggest the need for a fundamental shake-up
of the energy sector. Within this general trend
there has been, for example, a shift from petro-
chemical to biotechnological industrial processes.
BIOTECHNICA addresses this trend with a dedi-
cated presentation on the focus theme “Industrial
Biotechnology” which demonstrates the huge po-
tential and diversity of industrial biotechnology.
In this context, white biotechnology takes centre
stage in the exhibition dedicated to the focus
theme. Research companies and institutes engaged
in the development of industrial technology and
processes will demonstrate their R&D efforts for
different branches of industry – from agriculture
to chemicals, textiles and many other areas of in-
dustry. Irrespective of your field of expertise you
will find the right place to showcase your develop-
ments and reach the right target audience.
Naturally, the demonstration of recent develop-
ments is the main goal of the keynote presentation.
BIOTECHNICA encourages experts and decision-
makers to gather there and offers a forum for
talks and discussions on trends and new directions
in industrial biotechnology. On the basis of this
kind of exchange, resources-saving technologies
are put on course for sustainable and successful
commercial application.
