TODAY IN SCIENCEYOU WILL NEED:
Pencil, Calculator, Log #1 (update)
Biotechnology Lab – 2 sheets 4 sides Bookshelf-Please Staple
Cornell Notes – Biotech Virtual Lab Get out one sheet of lined paper – Set up for notes.
Tools of the Trade (3sheets 5 sides) Due Now
BIOTECHNOLOGY VIRTUAL LABTopic: Name
Biotech Virtual Lab Class
Terminology PeriodDate
ECB -European Corn Borer
Yield -Amount of crop production
Infestation -Overrun with pests and parasites
Independent Variable
-Types of Corn & their level of infestation: BT123, Super Harvest –NonBT; BT456; Golden Crop – NonBT Crop
BT Corn - BioTransgenic Corn
Growing Conditions for
Corn
Controlled Soil, moisture, temp,
l ight & nutrit ion
Dependent Variable -Yield of corn plant in terms of kernel mass (g)
-Soil, nutrients, watering amounts, light, heat, infestation level
Dependent vs. Independent VariablesScientist use an experiment to search for cause
and effect relationships in nature. In other words, they design an experiment so that changes to one item cause something else to change in a predictable way.
These changing qualit ies are called variables. A variable is any factor, trait or condition that can exist in differing amounts or types. An experiment usually has three kinds of variables: independent, dependent and controlled.
The scientist focuses their observations on the dependent variables to see how it responds to the change made to the independent variable . The change of the dependent variable is caused by and depends on the value of the independent variable.
Dependent vs. Independent VariablesExperiments also have controlled variables.
Controlled variables are factors that a scientist want to remain constant (the same), and they must observe them as carefully as the dependent variables. Controlled variable are used to compare the dependent variable’s changes in experiment’s relationship and keep the tests fair .
Underl ine the independent variable and
circle the dependent variable in each.
Dependent vs. Independent Variables
1.The price of gas determines how much I wil l purchase.
2. If I do not want to gain weight, the amount of exercise I need to do is a result of how much I eat.
HypothesisBased on what you know about the
experiment…..
In your Cornell Notes:If we test four different types
of corn under similar conditions and change only the infestation level, then we should be able to determine and give evidence for which corn type wil l provide the highest yield and withstand ECB attack.

• There are 8 different data collection tests.• Continue until all Data is Collected.
TODAY’S TASK LIST1) Work with a partner from your table OR
individually.2) Pick up your Assigned Computer.3)You will be held responsible for its well-
being.4) Ask Clarifying Questions as needed.5)Begin experiments & collection of data6) Our Goal is complete 8 tests by the end
of Friday’s class.
