BioScape: A Modeling And Simula3on Language For Biofilm Development And Bacteria-‐Materials Interac3ons
Yifei Bao, Philippe Bidinger, Vishakha Sharma, Advisor: Adriana B. Compagnoni
Department of Computer Science, Schaefer School of Engineering and Science, Stevens Ins3tute of Technology, Hoboken, NJ 07030
Introduc3on We design and implement BioScape, a
concurrent language based on the stochas3c
Pi-‐calculus; a calculus suitable for the
stochas3c simula3on of biological and bio-‐
materials processes in a reac3ve environment.
BioScape is mo3vated by the need of
individual-‐based, con3nuous mo3on, and
con3nuous space simula3on in modeling
complex bacteria-‐materials interac3ons and
biofilm development. Our models in BioScape
will help in iden3fying biological targets and
materials strategies to treat biomaterials-‐
associated bacterial infec3ons. A no3on of
mo3on scope and 3D space are introduced
into the language.
