IEA Bioenergy Task 42 Meeting Alicia Lindauer-Thompson [email protected]

Melissa Klembara [email protected]

Lille, France 3-4 March 2010

2 | IEA Bioenergy Task 42 Meeting eere.energy.gov

•  The Office of the Biomass Program is currently funding 29 biorefinery projects: –  At various scales (pilot, demonstration and small commercial). –  Using different types of conversion technology (biochemical,

thermochemical, hybrids) –  From a variety of feedstocks

•  agricultural residue, forest resources, energy crops, and algae –  To produce a suite of biofuels, bioproducts, and/or biopower

Match up Meeting Location to IEA Task 42 Interest

Proposal for Next IEA Bioenergy Task 42 Meeting

•  The US is a large land mass, so we have to narrow down what site(s) to visit and plan and meeting around those site visits.

•  Goal is to match the best location to IEA Task 42 interest

Proposed Option •  Location: Chicago, IL •  Date/Timeframe: September 2010 •  Would allow for potential site visits to:

–  Haldor Topsoe –  GTI –  ADM –  Argonne National Laboratory (focused on membrane technology

and life cycle analysis)

Haldor Topsoe, Inc.

Funding Project Site Feedstock Technology Outputs Other Partners

DOE: $25,000,000

Des Plaines, Illinois

Wood Thermochemical - Carbona Gasification and Topsoe TIGAS Processes, (Syngas to Methanol/DME to Gasoline)

Green Gasoline

Carbona, ConocoPhillips, UPM – Kymmene Corporation, Gas Technology Institute (GTI)

Total: $34,701,468

Cost Share 28%

Synopsis: Haldor Topsoe’s proposal involves biomass gasification followed by tar reforming (both proprietary, GTI and Carbona), gas cleanup and conditioning, catalytic two-step syngas-to-gasoline (TIGAS, proprietary, claimed advantages over methanol to gasoline process), and gasoline separation. The technology’s main advantage over traditional Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is the minimal requirements for product upgrading. The front-end and back-end processes have been tested extensively over many years. The pilot plant would fully integrate and optimize.

Green Gasoline & Diesel, Char

Johnson Timber Cargill, PetroSun, Blue Marble Energy, NREL, Michigan Tech U

Total: $3,125,000

Cost Share 20%

Synopsis: GTI has a novel process that produces gasoline and diesel from biomass through pyrolysis and syngas conversion. However, their project management plan includes one year of R&D prior to engineering design for pilot, which is outside schedule of fully obligating all Recovery Act. DOE plans to negotiate to fund through the preliminary design and engineering portion of their proposal, with the goal of proving out whether or not this technology can produce fuels at the favorable yields.

Corn Stover Hybrid - Pretreatment, Pelletizing, Fermentation, and Combustion

Ethanol, Ethyl Acrylate, Ethylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol, Electricity, & Fertilizer

None specified

Total: $35,781,201

Cost Share 31%

Synopsis: Process makes optimum use of biomass to produce highest value products by separating “cellulose pulp” from lignin and pelletizing the lignin at a separate location. The pelletized lignin and the “cellulose pulp” are then shipped to a central facility for further processing to ethanol and power, respectively. This is a unique approach that may solve a significant problem in the biofuels seasonal feedstock arena. This concept may increase the density of corn stover by a factor of three, making handling, transportation, storage, and processing more efficient. Ethylene glycol and propylene glycol byproducts enhance biorefinery economics and will be marketed with ADM’s existing polyols business.

Proposed Agenda

September 13 – Monday evening arrival in Chicago September 14 – Tuesday review of US Biomass Program

and briefing on Integrated Biorefinery related projects. –  Potential to have some project partners, whose site we wont be

able to visit due to logistical constrains, to attend and explain their projects (such as Algae).

–  Potential for afternoon site visits to GTI and/or Haldor Topsoe near Chicago.

September 15 – Task 42 Meeting September 16 – Potential site visit to ADM
