In the existence of God, but was not willing to acceptthe commonly understood teachings aa God's revelationof himself to man. He turned his attention to the in-vestigation of heathen religions, only to find each anda31 of these watisfactory.

HIS TEACHING8Nafnrally of a reverential mind, desiring to worshipand serve the true Cod, Pastor Russell reasoned: "Allthe creeds of Christendom claim to be founded on theBible; and these are conflicting, Is it possible that theBible has been misrepresented? It may not teach theterrible doctrine of eternal torment." Turning againto the Bible he determined to make a careful, systematicstudy of it without reference to creeds of men. As ctresult the remainder of his life was wholly devoted toteaching the Bible, writing and publishing religiousbooks and papers, lecturing and proclaiming the messageof Messiah's kingdom. He was the greatest religiousteacher since St. Paul, and did more than any otherman of modern times to establish the faith of the peoplein the Scriptures. He wm not the founder of a new religion, and nevermade such claim. He revived the great truths taughtby Jesus ahd the apostles, and turned the light of thetwentieth century upon these teachings. He made nodaim of a special revelation from God, but held that itwas God's due time for the Bible to be understood; andthat, being fully consecrated to the Lord and to hisservice,-he was permitted to understand it. Because hedevoted himself to the development of the fruits andgraces of the holy spirit, the promise of the Lord vasfulfilled in him: "For if these things be in you and

HIS WORXSeeing that God has such a wonderful plan for theblessing of mankind, Pastor Ruaeell gave all his powerand energy to making known these peat truths to theworld. He never took a vacation; he worked until theday of his death.Like other Christians he was Ieoking for the second

coming of Christ., Wv e e n 1872-6 he discovered thatthe Scriptures clearly teach that the Lord would notreturn in a body of flesh, but would return as a spiritbeing, invisible to hnman eyes, and that his secondpresence was due in the autumn of 1874. This led tothe pubbhing of a booklet entitled, "The Object andMamer of Our Lord's Return," which had a phe-nomenal circulation.Mang. students of the Bible throughout the UnitedStates and Canada responded to the information arrivedfrom that book, and his correspondence became volumin-ous. Realizing the necessity of keeping the truth beforethe minds of those who had begun to investigate, in1879 he began the publication of THEWATCH OWE~ LNDHEMLDOF CRBIST'S PRESENCE,nd was its soleeditor to the time of his death. It is hereinteresting to note that Jesus said: 'Who then is afaithful and wise servant, whom his Lord hath madieruler over hia household, to- give them meat in due sea-son?. Blessed is that servant, whom his Lord, when he 'cameth, shall find so doing. Verily I say unto you, thathe shall make him ruler over all his goods." Thousandsof the readers of Pastor Russell's writin@ believe that ,he filled the office of "that faithful and wise servant,"and that his peat work was giving to the householld offaith. meat in due season. His modesty and humilityprecluded him from openly clabing this title, but headmitted as much in private eonversation. For a more .detailed account of his work, reference is made to %ENATGHOWERf June lst, 1916.I n 1910 Pastor Russell visited Palestine and Russia..,He there delivered to thousands of orthodox Jewslectures on the regathering of the Jews to Pdestine. In1911 he was one of a committee of seven who made' ajourney around the world and especially examined intothe conditions of missionary work in Japan, China,Korea, and India.
