• Somalia has been at war for two decades and it has been without an effective central government since 1991. The government is too weak, corrupt, divided and disorganized to help the starving people of Somalia

• A combination of drought, war, restrictions on aid groups and years of chaos have pushed 4 million Somalis into “crisis”.

• Food and supplies donated to famine victims has been stolen by businessmen and then sold on the open market for a profit, this means that even if we can send flour to Somalia, it might not even make it into the hands of the suffering.

• 750,000 Somalis are starving to death or dying from the diseases sweeping through the malnourished population.

• The most important nutrients for the people of Somalia include: dietary minerals, iron, cobalt, chromium, copper, iodine, manganese, zinc, and molybdenum.

• Deficiencies in three nutrients; iodine, iron, and vitamin A, were found to be the main cause of health risks in developing countries.

• Quinoa flour provides the most long term benefits and is highest in calories.

• Wheat flour is the cheapest, but it doesn't compare to the high levels of fat and protein in soy flour.

• Flour without gluten is more dense, and out of the gluten free flours, buckwheat and rye are the most dense.

• All flour has a little bit of oil in it and that can go bad when it is exposed to air for a long period of time.

• Wheat flour contains the most vitamins including protein, fiber, iron, vitamin B, thiamin, niacin, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc.

• White flour and Rice flour have high levels of starch (complex carbohydrate), which are the body's most important and readily available source of energy.

• The carbohydrates in flour that contains simple sugars and highly refined grains, such as white flour and white rice are easily broken down and cause blood sugar levels to rise quickly.

• Fiber is important for a healthy digestive system.• Protein is essential for growth , maintenance, and repair of the body.• Flour is one of the main sources of iron in a healthy diet. It is an

important mineral and is essential for healthy blood cells and good circulation.

CONCLUSION• I’m going to send soy flour. It is the best because it contains

essential nutrients for the people of Somalia in this time of need.

• Soy flour is better then Quinoa flour because although Quinoa is a complete source of protein, when it was tested in the lab it showed negative for protein content. This is a result of the process which grinds the Quinoa into a flour, all the nutrients in the outer layer of the seeds are grinded away.

• 12 million people across the region need food aid, however we can only send 200 lbs because we have limited funds of only 600$.

• Even if we are able to get food and supplies to the main ports of Somalia, I think there is a real challenge in being able to deliver that assistance, however its all we can to do to help save lives in Somalia .
