• To study about creatures and use their character to new technology

Rapid Train 1

In 1999, JR started project to developnew rapid train “Model 500”

Previous type of rapid train took 6 hours from Tokyo to Hakata.Its distance is 1064.3km.

Nairobi – Mombasa is 450km.15 hours by train.

Model

Tunnel Don Phenomenon

• When the rapid train enter tunnel, it sounded like shot of air gun.

This called “Tunnel Don Phenomenon”.• King Fisher dive into water to get fish. They are very fast, but there is only few spray. • Bill of King Fisher has less air resistance

compare with other birds.

In 1996 March, Japan invented new rapid train mimic with King Fisher, and solved “Tunnel Don Phenomenon”.

Rapid Train: Problem

①Problem　 Noise pollution Japanese rapid train has most strict standard towards noise. (↓75 phon) Much quiet, compare with vacuum cleaner.

②Cause Pantograph

Whirl of air increase with speed up. This whirl of air makes noise.

Rapid Train: Solution• Owl fly without noise at night.

• Their feather has indent(ギザギザ ).

• This indent diffuse air, so became noiseless.

• The train reduced 30% of noise.

Air plane

• Air plane also mimic wing of owl.

• To reduce noise.

• To reduce weight.

Corrugated Cardboard

Hexagonal Honeycomb Structure. This technology was born by research of “How to lighter the air plane”. To mimic honeycomb structure, material became much stronger.

Injection without pain

Invented by Lightnix Inc. in Hyogo prefecture, Japan. As same as needle of mosquito, diameter is 200 micro meter. (1/5

of 1mm)The surface has indentation. (ギザギザ )This needle made by plastic named lactic acid, which decompose

inside body.So, put medicine inside the needle and insert into body.

Bulletproof vest

• Hebrew University in Israel invented new fiber as same as spider thread.

• This fiber use for bulletproof vest, and thread for surgical operation.

• Spider thread is 5 times stronger than iron of same thickness. • Spider thread is 2 times more stretch compare with nylon.• In Papua New Guinea, people practice fishing by using this

spider web and branch.

Gummed Tape

Gecko has 500 thousands bristle on the hand.Each bristle branched 100 to 1000 bristle.So they can stick on the wall, which call“Van der Waals force”.

In Manchester University invented new gummed tape researched by gecko.It can hold 100g by 0.5 square cm.

Bionic Car Benz

Use style of body frame about new car.The door panel has 40% stronger than previous.The weight became 1/3 compare with previous.The fuel reduced 20% compare with previous.

Yellow Box Fish has less current resistance.Also, the frame is strong to protect from enemy.

Air Conditioning SystemAir condition in Savanna.

White ants use mushroom and water to control air .

To cultivate mushroom, reduce heat and CO2 inside of anthill.

The high duct replace CO2 and fresh air.

In summer, cool down by evaporation of underground water.

In winter, fermentation of mushroom stabilize temperature around 30 .℃

Air Conditioning System

• Inside of anthill is cavern.• The cost of cooling down

takes only 10% compare with previous system.

• The energy consumption is 35% lower compare with other similar buildings.

• Absorb heat during the day, and use fan to circulate heat at night.

East Gate Center

• In 1996 Zimbabwe, constructed mega shopping center named “East Gate Center”.

• This building applied air condition system of white ants.

Conclusion

• In conclusion, human being started to learn from nature.

• There are huge potentiality of new business and products in Bio Mimicry.
