    WHAT IS BIODIESEL?

Biodiesel refers to a non-petroleum-based diesel fuelconsisting of long chain alkyl(methyl, propyl or ethyl ) esters, made by transesterification of vegetable oil or animal fat which can

be used (alone, or blended with conventionalpetrodiesel) in unmodified diesel engine vehicles.

    NEED FOR BIODIESEL

According to estimation by various agencies petroleumresources would exhaust in 43 years from the earthscrust.

    Fossil fuels are environmentally polluting.

Fossil fuels are non renewable. Requirement of alternate source of energy that is

    environmentally friendly.

    ADVANTAGES OF BIODEISEL

    Biodiesel is synthetically prepared.

Its cost is lesser than that of conventional diesel.

It can be used with diesel in various blends.

It is an environmentally a green fuel.

It is photo synthetically a renewable fuel.

    PREPARATION OF BIODIESEL

IN LABORATORY Sodium hydroxide crystals are first grounded to

    fine particles.

Then alcohol (ethyl alcohol etc.) was added to it ina vessel an the glass vessel and shaken until themixture turned brown.

The vessel was in turn heated due to the

exothermic reaction held above. Then any vegetable oil was added to the mixture

and brown colored biodiesel and white coloredglycerol was seen.

    VEGETABLE OILS USED FOR

    PREPARING BIODIESEL

    Rape seeds.

    Palm oil. Soya bean oil.

    Jatropha.

    Sunflower oil.

    Peanut oil.

    Coconut oil.

    Castor oil.

    PREPARATION OF BIODIESEL A

    GREEN PROCESS

Only biodegradable wastes are generated during

the preparation of biodiesel. So, notenvironmentally polluting.

Process is itself exothermic so no external heatingis needed & precvious fossil fuel resources are

saved.Wastes include glycerol , a very useful chemical

    which is reusable.

    BIODIESEL A GREEN FUEL

Auto mobile exhausts CO2 into the atmosphere.

With the increase in the plantation of vegetable oilseed plants the carbon dioxide is absorbed by theplants to booster photosynthesis. So the termphoto synthetically renewable justified.

Thus the the plants may reduce the carbon dioxdecontent of the atmosphere. So, to an extent itsolves the problem of global warming.

    DISADVANTAGES OF BIODIESEL

Requires large tracts of land ( according toestimates the current consumption of diesel wouldbe replaced by biodiesel for 2/3 of total land areaof USA) for vegetable oil.

Which is not possible in this era of starvationand grain crunch.
