EnWoBio – Engineered Wood and Biobased Materials Laboratory:

New bio-composites: building materials refined from renewable resources based on wood or natural fibres and biopolymers or recyclable thermoplastics

New natural wood modification: new concepts based on combined mechanical-hydro-thermal procedure to obtain e.g. higher surface hardness, abrasion resistance, dimensional stability as well as increased decay resistance.

Physico-chemical and moisture analysis of bio-based building materials:Moisture sorption; fungal decay resistance, dimensional stability, mechanical performance and insulating capacity of bio-based materials

Engineered wood products for the construction market: Development of new bio-based products to enhance energy and cost efficient building processes. Engineered wood products (EWP) to support the needed societal development.

LCA and ecological-socio-economical aspects of biobased building materials: A proactive activity to draw a strategic roadmap for sustainable innovations for biobased building materials.

Interest in material combinations and hybrid approaches

Material properties and material choices

are of increasing importance today, having effect on energy production,

maintenance needs and life span of structures

Growth and urban densification

requires efficient construction processes

Building construction

is undeniably responsible for a big share of the emissions from society

Interest in material combinations and hybrid approaches

Horizon 2020

Increasing environmental concern i society

Material industrial interest

Drop on the pulp- and paper market calls for consideration of new markets

Timber industry mainly produces low-refined products (not much EWPs)

Swedish construction market

Suffering from ever increasing building costs, asking for increased efficiency

Interest in material combinations and hybrid approaches

New products with newly developed, innovative functions and/or

combinations

Reduced consumption of energy and material resources

More out of the utilised products and components in terms of rationality,

time- and economy-related efficiency and high performing supply of functions

Combinations of existing material properties to get more and improved

functions out of the products we manufacture.

Bio-based materials

are in focus to increase the use of not only timber but also wood in different form

and other bio-based material sources of local and regional importance

Hybrid concepts

are studied as an approach to decrease the environmental footprint

of built structures and to increase the adaptability of structural systems

Building technology development

makes almost anything possible, but what is reasonable?

Considering hybrid

• Hybrid as concept: a matter of synergy

• Targeting: Environment Society Economy

• Materials in use versus utilisation of materials
