Welcome to this, the 2nd annual celebration of our take on the hundred most influential people in UK digital. As Chair of this initiative, I have to admit that whittling this list down to just 100 names was a tall order.

For everyone who hasn’t made it in this year, the temptation is to offer my apologies – although maybe it’s better to borrow the tongue-in-cheek line from Justin Cooke elsewhere in this book and simply say: must try harder!

But in all seriousness, to be selected for inclusion in the BIMA Hot 100 means that you’re doing great things. Whether this is on an altruistic front, for the future good of the industry – like Mia Chapman (Girl Geeks) or Emma Mulqueeny (Rewired State / Young Rewired State) – or whether you’re making waves with your entrepreneurialism – like Derren Lawford (London Live TV) or Mary Keane-Dawson (myHealthPal) – one thing unites the Hot 100: they’re all making UK digital an inspiring and fascinating industry to be part of.

I’d also like to pay special mention to those profiled on pages 6 to 11 – the equally ‘hot’ members of the BIMA Executive and the special advisors and associates, all of whom donate their time and talent to BIMA and therefore to the industry as a whole.

We instituted a rule this year that no one involved in BIMA in this capacity could be included in the Hot 100 – but I’d like to go on record that each of you are worthy of ‘Hot 100’ status, for your own achievements but also for making BIMA what it is and enabling the organisation to do so much for so many in the industry.

On this same theme, I’d like to mention the organisations whose generous support has enabled this initiative to flourish: Microsoft Mobile, Six Degrees Group and TDA Digital.

So all it remains for me to say is thanks to our partners and congratulations to all those who are profiled in this book.

Samuel Johnson famously proclaimed, “When you are tired of London, you are tired of life”. The same could easily be said of the digital industry, which not only constantly reinvents itself, but helps reinvent our entire society, too.

Whether it’s the way people laugh, the way they love, the way they work or the way they play, every facet of 21st century life is impacted by our work. It’s both a huge responsibility and a huge joy. It should come as no surprise, then, to learn that we jumped at the chance to sponsor the BIMA Hot 100 2014 and celebrate all the inductees to BIMA’s Digital Hall of Fame.

Microsoft Mobile technology has not only connected billions of people worldwide, it has also turned millions of people into digital creatives. Citizen journalists use us to report real time events. Photographers capture the beauty of their worlds and instantly share them across the globe. Developers create apps, which encourage, entertain and educate. Filmmakers document and direct with a camera they can fit in their back pocket.

It’s these amazing everyday adventures and more, which both inspire and contribute to our own digital strategy. After all, thanks to the rise of social media and Web 2.0, people now have the tools to share their creativity with vast audiences, in ways only limited by their imaginations. We make it our job to help them however we can. Our digital channels, from Vine to YouTube, Twitter to Instagram, as well as blogs both official and fan-fuelled, celebrate them every single day.

Now, we focus on conversations just as much as on customers. This collaborative relationship creates a real emotional connection with people who love our products just as much as we do. And by working with amazingly talented people, like those showcased in the BIMA Hot 100 2014, we aim to continue doing this in ways that today might seem incredible, but will next year be commonplace.

After all, making the incredible everyday is what unites the people you’ll find in these pages. Digital is a fantastically innovative industry, not just because it combines technology and creativity, but because it excites the greatest minds around. Simply put, people love to make magic happen and digital allows them to do that on a daily basis.

To all the magicians showcased here, we salute you. You’re the people who are changing the world in a myriad of wonderful ways. It’s your ideas and talent, your dynamism and vision, which make our digital lives such a pleasure. And we hope by joining this league of passionate people, you’ll be encouraged to work your daily magic far into a fantastic future.

Adel is an Architect turned Entrepreneur who has had a passion for digital since he started tinkering with a 386 in 1994. He started design and build agency Despark.com while still a student and it is now an award-winning 50-strong digital boutique, across studios in London and Bulgaria.

Entrepreneurship is core to Adel’s identity – Despark.com helps startups define, design and build their web/mobile products and provides brands with a “startup as a service” model to innovate their services. Despark.com has also formed partnerships with other leading UK agencies.

Adel also started OpenBuildings.com, the “wikipedia for buildings” and Clippings.com, the curated marketplace for furniture from emerging designers. He is also a foodie – and runs a gourmet burger joint, Boom! Burgers & Steaks, just for kicks!

Alice co-founded Entrepreneur First, a tech startup accelerator, that selects talented individuals before they have a team or idea. EF typically takes graduates and spends a year with them helping them build their own startup.

Last year EF created 11 startups now valued in excess of $30m, with two funded by Y Combinator. The second cohort has just graduated and the third recruited, with 1 in 3 eligible Cambridge University Computer Scientists applying to the programme.

Alice also set up ‘Code First: Girls’, a free programming course for female students to help build the pipeline of women founding and working in tech startups.

Alice was previously at McKinsey & Co, the strategy consultancy.

Since launching his career in mobile in 2007 aged just 18, Adam has worked to pioneer the mobile as a highly creative and effective channel for global businesses. In November 2010, Adam joined Grapple Mobile as Chief Strategy Officer where he led it to become Innovative Agency of the Year 2012 (MI Awards) and a two-times ‘Agency to Watch’ (The Drum/NMA).

In September 2013, Grapple was acquired by Monitise plc for a total consideration of £39m, becoming Monitise Create. Adam is now one of the youngest Senior Vice Presidents of a publicly listed UK business at just 25 years old. He is a popular industry commentator (The Telegraph, The Sunday Times, Management Today), a former BIMA Awards judge, and in 2012 was awarded the NMA Rising Star award.

Adam is commercially responsible for Vodafone Group’s digital vision and strategy across 22 countries and over 45 partner markets globally. He is expanding the value chain, building deeper relationships through the development of innovative digital services across over 350 million customers.

Previously Adam has been on the Executive team at Rakuten’s Play.com and in senior management positions at Royal Bank of Scotland and Marks & Spencer. He grew up and was educated in Australia, and has developed a strong career in the UK since arriving in London 12 years ago.

Adam is known for his broad skill set. As an entrepreneur setting up an online marketing agency through to his more recent corporate leadership experience, his energy and passion for digital is endless.

My great ideas… come as a result of “rumination”. Brainstorming as a team then going off to do normal things and awaiting inspiration, which comes at the most unlikely of times and place.

The innovation that’s excited me lately is… driverless cars – especially the fleet arriving in Milton Keynes in 2017.

Alicia Navarro is Co-founder and CEO of Skimlinks, the leading content monetisation service for online publishers. Having worked for Vodafone and IBM, she created her own technology company in 2008 – and Skimlinks was born. Alicia is very proud of what Skimlinks has accomplished, which over the past year included driving $500M worth of ecommerce sales through its platform, and continuing to build one of the best startup team cultures. This year, Skimlinks is working to build further innovative tools that give editors the control over how their commerce-related content is monetised.

Alison is a digital veteran having started in the days of dial-up Internet working at COI on M15 and Foreign Office, before moving to the advertising world. Whilst at Tribal DDB as Head of Media she worked on Volkswagen’s digital brand strategy as well as launching The National Lottery business on the Internet, mobile and interactive TV. She was then Head of Digital Client Services at Beattie McGuinness Bungay before joining Google in 2012 and was recently promoted to run the UK Creative Agency Team. Alison works 4 days a week and was selected as one of the UK’s Top 50 Power Part Time workers (published in the FT). She also represents Google at Buckingham Palace’s Women’s Forum, chaired by the Countess of Wessex.

Alistair is the ECD at Critical Mass London. His career started above the line at St Luke’s, where he spent 10 years, before stints as Head of Copy at Agency Republic and Digital Creative Director at WCRS – returning to Agency Republic in 2011 to run the creative department.

When Republic merged with sister Omnicom Agency, Critical Mass, Alistair was appointed ECD of the new London agency, with a focus on developing their creative output.

10 years of learning what makes brands tick, followed by 6 years delivering a huge variety of innovative work across almost every digital platform, makes him perfectly positioned to help clients meet the challenges of 21st Century marketing.

Founded in 2008 with Amy’s business partner Kate Ross, eight&four is now a multi-award winning agency in Soho, with a talented team of 12. Spencer Gallagher and Peter Hoole sit on the agency’s Board.

Amy was named in The Drum’s Top 30 Women Under 30 in Digital – and under her leadership eight&four has been named the 3rd fastest growing small digital agency in the UK in the Drum Digital Census 2013.

Anil is responsible for deciding What’s Next for DigitasLBi in the UK and taking the agency there. As well as ensuring that quality remains paramount across all areas of the business, Anil has helped DigitasLBi’s biggest clients realise their digital ambitions, and played a key role in the agency achieving its Marketing Digital Agency of the Year status. Anil is also an architect of DigitasLBi’s blending ethos; and has been instrumental in forging the agency’s uniquely collaborative culture, which has recently been recognised with a Great Place to Work accolade.

Anna Rafferty started her career at the startup poster-child that was lastminute.com, moved to a digital agency (Dowcarter), then managed web projects at the V&A and for the past decade has been MD of Penguin Books Digital.

While there, she was responsible for Penguin’s websites, digital marketing, social media, digital publishing, apps, audio and new digital ventures. She stepped down after her second baby in 2014 and currently spends her time as Chair of Culture24, on various BAFTA committees and consulting for interesting companies changing themselves and the world, in the arts, entertainment or charity sectors.

She’s a Fellow of the RSA, a member of IADAS, a judge of many awards and at the mercy of two small, bellowing boys.

Andy is co-founder and Chief Creative Officer at digital product development studio Mint Digital. Recent new clients include Tesco and vInspired. Successful projects include the BIMA-winning, Grand Prix-nominated Sexperience 1000 for Channel 4 and Benetton’s blockbuster web competition IT’S MY TIME.

In the last 12 months, Mint has sold its StickyGram business to PhotoBox and launched two successful new businesses: DeskBeers (craft beer delivered to your desk on a Friday) and Boomf (your Instagram on marshmallows).

Andy is responsible for the future vision of the agency and for coaching senior clients on how to plan their business to take advantage of the unfolding digital landscape. He has blended skills across Design and Advertising that come in useful in today’s world of connected stories and services.

Whether utilising the data from an F1 car, creating smart products or wearable tech he has a record for using some of the most innovative technology to solve business problems.

Andy sits on the executive board of D&AD, lectures with Hyper Island and Google Squared and is regularly invited to speak and judge at events.

Astrid joined MediaMonks almost three years ago as CSD at the company’s Amsterdam HQ, where she was instrumental in forming and nurturing constructive relationships with the company’s agency-partners.

She has since taken the reigns of the MediaMonks UK office, which is now contributing more than one third of the company’s annual revenue. A strong believer in a collaborative approach, Astrid’s main focus is on strengthening relationships between MediaMonks and its agency-partners, and keeping on producing exciting digital work.

MediaMonks is an independent creative digital production company that works with and for advertising agencies to craft amazing digital work for global brands. They have offices in Amsterdam, London, New York and Singapore.

Bruce Daisley joined Twitter in 2012 as UK Director – he is responsible for helping grow Twitter’s audience and advertising business.

He previously ran Google’s display business with responsibility for YouTube and the Google Display Network. He has also worked at Emap/Bauer and Capital Radio.

In 2010, New Media Age recognised Bruce as having made the Greatest Individual Contribution to new media in the UK.

Bruce divides his time between pop music and laughing.

Working at OgilvyOne London for the past 12 years, Annette has enjoyed a rapid rise through the ranks. She began her Ogilvy life running the American Express EMEA business followed by a stint running OgilvyInteractive. In 2007 she led the team that won the British Gas account and in 2008 the team that won the British Airways global Customer Engagement business. She was appointed Managing Director in 2008 and within nine months she was promoted to CEO.

In 2012, Annette became CEO of OgilvyOne Europe / Africa and Middle East. She is also Chairman of OgilvyOne London.

Annette is an active member of the Women’s Advertising Club of London (WACL). She is an IPA Council member and a Non-Executive Director of London First.

Anthony Ganjou is an award-winning creative entrepreneur and founder of CURB. The agency, whose founding client was the President of the United States, has spent the last four years helping the world’s biggest brands and agencies create extraordinary offline experiences.

Some of CURB’s most famous activations include re-surfacing the OXO tower for PS4, growing a billboard out of bacteria for Warner Brothers/Contagion and creating one of the most successful ambush marketing activations in history where they flew five planes over the Ryder cup, skywriting tweets to put off the US team and help the Europeans in their famous comeback.

Chris self-funded the setup of 7thingsmedia in 2009 at the age of 26. The multi-award winning agency is still independently owned and now boasts three global offices: London, New York and Singapore. Clients include Agent Provocateur, boohoo.com, French Connection and Urban Outfitters and the agency works across a variety of channels including affiliates, display, PPC, SEO and social.

Chris’s personal accolades include being named Marketer of the Year by The Drum and he’s a regular in VOGUE.com’s most influential people online.

Outside of 7thingsmedia Chris is an Investor and Non-Executive Director of luxury shoe and accessory retailer, Harper. He also speaks globally on digital media and trains the future of the industry with Econsultancy.

Chris has grown Nimbletank exponentially in 18 months, driving award winning wondrous and creative apps for clients such as ASOS and Universal Music Group.

Nimbletank are also behind the world’s first global album launch for Universal Music through the use of augmented reality (AR) where they created UView, an app that allows for the creation of integrated campaigns that merge worlds instantly.

I got into digital because… a background in CRM allowed me to easily think in a connected rather than a linear way. Or as I call it – an evolutionist rather than a creationist approach to advertising.

The next big thing in digital will be… heuristic technology; the fact that computers can get smarter and also start to learn in more human ways is fascinating

Prior to 12ahead Charlotte cut her teeth at New Media Age. During her over five years at the industry stalwart she rose from editorial assistant to news editor, as well as developing a popular weekly column on social media ‘McEleny on Social’.

Dan has been working in digital since 1996 as a technologist, creative director and experience designer and has earned over 70 international awards during his career. Following 15 years at R/GA New York, he joined SapientNitro London in January 2012 as Director of Experience Design.

Dan is often invited to contribute to industry publications including The Drum, Campaign and Marketing Magazine and participate in speaking engagements and consultation workshops including IxDA and SXSW.

At SapientNitro, he led the team that created the GetCash feature in the RBS mobile app as a fix for forgotten bankcards. GetCash has elevated RBS’s profile as a customer-focused innovator and has been recognised with international awards including the UK’s only Cannes Gold for Mobile in 2013.

Daniele is a digital agency veteran, having grown Profero from a small London shop to a global agency of over 300 people, before moving to Cheil as Head of Innovation. He teaches at Hyper Island and is a thoughtful and challenging speaker on how innovation and agencies aren’t always natural bedfellows.

Ross continues to invest in emerging technologies – in particular additive manufacturing – and he is responding to the much heralded ‘Internet of Things’ by helping the companies he works with better understand what data they have and how they can leverage it to create commercial advantage.

In addition to this, his Bi-Beo trading company has launched another online venture this year and Ross continues to work with Micro-Tyco to encourage entrepreneurial startups, particularly in technology.

Robin Charney leads AAR’s digital consultancy and has extensive experience in, and enthusiasm for, the digital communications, software and technology space. Robin has in-depth knowledge of the digital agency community and their clients from her previous work as EMEA Head of Platform Marketing at Adobe, and more recently, her digital consultancy practice and from having co-founded Collision – an event series that brings the advertising and startup/entrepreneur communities together.

Sheila has been responsible for insight, behaviour change and education in public health, first for the Department of Health and – since its inception in April 2013 – as Director of Marketing at Public Health England. Prior to senior marketing and communication roles in the Cabinet Office, Sheila enjoyed a successful commercial career in BT leading the company’s high profile consumer marketing activity.

Sheila also ran her own marketing consultancy for a number of years with clients in financial services, healthcare and telecommunications. Married with two daughters, Sheila has an MA in French and Italian (Glasgow) and a post graduate qualification in European Marketing.

Stefan joined ZenithOptimedia as Chief Digital Officer In March 2014. His principle task is to build the ZenithOptimedia digital ‘Live ROI’ proposition and product.

Prior to ZenithOptimedia Stefan was Managing Partner at MediaCom where he was responsible for the vision and delivery of the company’s digital offering, growing it into the No. 1 digital media agency in the UK with over £300m billings and 200 digital staff. During his time at MediaCom he also developed the digital strategies for brands such as Sky, Coca-Cola, Mars and VW.

Terry has been at the forefront of digital for the past 20 years. In the 90s he designed a number of award-winning multimedia titles for Dorling Kindersley before becoming head of the digital team at the company that is now DigitasLBi.

In 2000, Terry became the head of design at Vodafone, where his team was responsible for delivering a range of global digital services. Terry founded Seren in 2003. Seren was one of the world’s first specialist Service Design agencies and has developed many of the tools and disciplines that are now widely adopted across the ‘omni-channel’ world. In particular, Seren has pioneered Functional Branding, an evolution of traditional branding theory into the area of service innovation and functional design.

Tony is a longstanding digital leader in the UK but most famously in the North West. As well as heading up the multi-award winning digital agency Code Computerlove – established in 1999 and now employing more than 70 people – Tony is the current chair of Manchester Digital, the North West’s trade association for the digital industries. He is spearheading activity to build Manchester’s reputation for digital creativity and digital excellence. Tony played an instrumental role in growing membership by 70% in the past 12 months, and is enhancing the credibility of the organisation as a key voice of the sector and influencer to the council, local government and education establishments.
