1. The BIM strategy in Bane NOR
• Use model based methods and digital tools for all railway projects
− Integrated part of project management
• Model based «As built» documentation − Bane NOR owns the right to all data− Models for maintenance
• Work actively with development of competence, methods, digital tools and standards for effective use of BIM
• Guidelines and requirement for IT
4
The main points in our BIM strategy
All our large projects use models in all phases

Where are we now?

Drawing based projectsThe information is divided. Difficult to quality check against each other. Great risk that conflicts are not detected early – at great cost.
3D models3D geometry that describes and places objects in existing terrain is modelled and placed in a inter discipline model.
Drawings
Technical description
Stake out data
Information models (BIM)The objects carries necessary information about themselves.
Effects: • Easier quality control • Better communication• Possible machine control and
streamlining the building site
Effects: :- all information about the project in
models- Information from the models can be
used to reduce the number of drawings and technical descriptions etc.

2. Our requirements for the use of BIM
• The Bane NOR handbook for digital planning and construction− Define types of models and content of each model− Define requirements for file formats− Set the requirements for none-license software for
access and presentation − Define details like coding, standard for file names,
object definition and so on
Our handbook (Norwegian only):https://proing.opm.jbv.no/wiki/_media/felles/sty-600239_handbok_digital_planlegging.pdf
8
What are our overall requirements?
• Covers all details that are not in our handbook needed to coordinate all large projects− Coordinate systems− Definitions and descriptions on how to
implement new disciplines in models− Requirements for levels of details in
different planning phases− States the type of drawings needed in
additions to models
− This document is revised 1-2 times a year based on needs and input from BIM managers in Bane NOR and our partners
9
Routine document
• Requirements for access to models− We can not specify which software
consultants and contractors can use − We require access to the models at all
times− We prefer cloud based, license free
software if possible.− We require necessary number of licenses
or logins
• On delivery we demand all data, including original formats
10
Access to models and data during construction

• Bane NOR works towards open international file formats for railway and infrastructure; IFC and / or GML
• IFC and GML is not fully developed for all infrastructure disciplines.
• Formats like DWG and LandXML are still in use until the development of IFC and / or GML are completed
• Bane NOR support Nordic and International standardization
11
A table from our routine document regarding possible formats for delivery for some disciplines. Tables like this will revised several times on the way towards open standards
File formats
• Infrastructure need standardized properties on objects for life cycle− This is work in progress
• Bane NOR works towards standardized properties and is in the process of defining: − Which properties do we need in planning, building and
as-built?− Example: A culvert has 70 different properties in our
maintenance database – we need to specify how many we need during planning, construction and for as-built
12
Object properties
• Our contracts encourage the use of model based work methods like VDC and ICE. − Bane NOR has certified 2 technical project
managers on VDC, and are currently in the process of certifying 3 more
13
Model based work methods
3. Challenges and our plans regarding BIM
• Our goal is to have model based as-built documentation− That means all necessary information regarding an
object is saved as properties on the object
• Models for maintenance− We have just started a pilot project to define what is
needed in a maintenance model
15
Requirement for as-built documentation
Illustrations: Bane NOR
• We aim to: − Give as clear and concise requirements as
possible− Make our models and design data
accessible as a part of the contract− documentation adapted to the necessary
quality level and degree of freedom for the project
16
BIM in contracts- how can we help our contractors?

The most important challenges regarding BIM
17
• Open standard for file formats and properties for railway life cycle
• Contracts needs to be developed further• Model based as-built documentation
needs better requirements • some of our requirements still demands
drawings
• We will continue to build competence using BIM in all aspects of our organization
