CADD the use of computer technology for design and design documentation. CAD software replaces manual
drafting with an automated.
BIM Building information modeling (BIM) is a digital representations of physical and functional characteristics of the
existing and final project allowing design issues to be spotted before construction.
Digital As Built updates to the CADD/BIM models as constructed; location and asset data collected
during and post construction
Digital Twin A digital twin is a digital representation of a physical object. It includes the model of the
physical object, data from the object, a unique one-to-one correspondence to the object and the ability to monitor the object. Digital twins offer strong potential to achieve better insights on their objects and drive better decisions.

Improve Safety…
Use of AMG - Less time staking projects, work zones are safer,
Better cross slope and superelevation construction quality
Better Staging Plans from BIM, improves work zone / less impacts on drivers
Enhance Mobility…
BIM can help plan detours and scheduling of lane shifts with traffic simulations
BIM helps optimize design and construction of facility assets
Helps visualize solutions ahead and avoid costly mistakes during construction when using legacy plans
Streamline Construction Schedule Highlight who is building what, when each part will be built, the materials to be used and
how it will be constructed
Inspires Innovation
Create an accurate and complete as-built record model for ongoing maintenance, operation and asset management through out
life cycle
Once built, the model becomes a virtual and accurate collection of the asset data used for system wide decision making
Helps to monitor construction schedule and budget
Helps reconcile Final Project Costs
BIM Benefits for FDOT - Vital Few

BIM supports Civil Integrated Management (CIM)
CIM office objective …
Web-based GIS Enterprise Data portal framework fueled by the ROADS Initiative.
ROADS Initiative
readily available and accurate data to make informed decisions.
streamline information across the organization
enable better, faster decision making
removing current barriers that prevent the efficient sharing of information.

Pilot Project Requirements:
• Model as Legal Document - signed and sealed
• Construction requires the use of AMG
• Earthwork
• Pavement (Milling and Overlay)
• Implement NexGen plans to the greatest extent possible
DBB AMG Pilot Projects
DBB AMG/BIM Pilot Projects
Expectations:
• Better Designs
• Plans Production Efficiencies
• Accurate Quantities
• Better Construct Cost Estimates
• Minimize Contractor Claims
• Less Error & Omission Issues
DBB BIM Pilot Projects
Challenges:
• Design Submittal: NexGen Plans and Models (each signed)
• As-builts were done both on pdfs and in model files
• Over the shoulder Design Reviews with Native software
• No defined guidelines for model reviews, currently developing
• Developed procedure for Digitally signing models
• FDOTDigitalSignaturesNativeCADD -YouTube
Florida Department of Transportation
Start with simple projects, not many complications
focused on specific construction activity (earthwork, paving, milling, overlays)
Organize and scope the model management plan at inception
Make model navigation as simple as possible for non-modeling reviewers
Project Reviewers, CEIs, Estimators, etc.
Lessons Learned (8 Mile Turnpike –RRR )
Florida Department of Transportation
Signed model delivery eliminates need for the Project Layout sheets in Plans
Employ advanced coordination with the permitting agencies on their needs, preferably before
procurement, so the scope and staff hours can reflect any additional deliverables needed by
the permitting agencies to complete their review and issue the permit.
Employ advanced coordination with the UAOs to prepare them for NexGen plans. The use of
KMZ files could be demonstrated to build a level of comfort with the UAOs and avoid the need
to generate single-use drainage structure cross sections.
Lessons Learned (8 Mile Turnpike –RRR )
Florida Department of Transportation
Contractor should validate the existing surface before AMG
Make necessary design model changes accordingly
Consider reviewing profiles on controlling 3D breaklines for smoother transitions, not just
controlled by cross sections intervals
Common Data exchange between Design and Construction is needed
XML files are not good enough
Streamline the Digital Signatures workflow for design models
Lessons Learned (8 Mile Turnpike –RRR )
Florida Department of Transportation
Some Contractors prefer paper prints for the convenience of field staff.
Many contractors are still not ready for digital model delivery
Some are not as eager as others to invest in the technology and training required to make
their staff effective.
More encouragement and collaboration with the construction industry will be required
Contracting industry needs expertise manipulating 3D models and CADD files.
