Introduction - Safety

Safety

High voltage warningContact with high voltage may cause death or serious injury. Always disconnect power to unit prior to servicing.

High leakage current and earth-grounding warningIt is essential to earth-ground the sign before connecting the power supply. Contacting signs that are not earth-grounded may cause death or serious injury.

Do not ground equipment to the sign before the sign itself is grounded. This may cause death or serious injury and damage the sign and the equipment.

Safety EquipmentService personnel should have Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, full safety harnesses with two point lanyards for a 100% connection, and other appropriate safety equipment before attempting to service the billboard.

OtherOther safety messages appear throughout this manual where appropriate.

Equipment protection

Preventing electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage

IntroductionStatic electricity is an electrical charge caused by the imbalance of electrons on the surface of an electrical component. Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) is the transfer of this charge, which can damage an electrical component. Because Adaptive signs contain EPROMs, print circuit boards (PCBs), and other static-sensitive devices, proper grounding techniques are required to remove charges before dangerous levels of static can build up.

This document shows how to prevent ESD when working with Adaptive equipment. For additional and more specific information on controlling ESD, see the Electrostatic Discharge Association Web site at http://www.esda.org/aboutesd.html.

Safety guidelinesGrounding, the act of balancing the electrical charge between yourself and a sign or electrical component by touching metal on either, must take place prior to and throughout any service procedures. To further minimize the potential for ESD damage, do the following:

• Always turn off power before removing or inserting electrical components. • Limit direct hand contact by holding electrical components at their edge and using handling tools to pry

them from their sockets. • When possible, use a static-free surface, such as an anti-static mat, to do your work.• Never slide static-sensitive devices across any type of surface—friction creates static.• Keep styrofoam, plastics, and other static-generating material away from your work area. Generally,

any non-conductive (non-metal) material can be static-generating.• If you leave your work area and then return, repeat any procedures used to ground yourself before

picking up where you left off.• Be aware that ESD increases in the winter when there is less moisture in the air.

Adaptive signs are designed to be grounded whether they are on or off. However, if the wiring is disconnected, the signs are no longer grounded and you are not protected.

Introduction - Equipment protection

Excite Billboard Sign Service Manual (pn 1112610101 rev. B) 7

Protective packagingElectrical components must always be moved or stored in an anti-static bag to provide protection against static electricity. Each bag must be marked with an ESD packaging label, indicating the component inside is static-sensitive and that appropriate caution must be taken when handling. All bags must be grounded prior to opening to remove any potential charges.

Preventing ESD in the fieldDo the following to effectively protect both yourself and the electrical component with which you are working:

To prevent ESD in the field

1. Remove power to the sign.2. Put on a wrist strap. If no personal body protection is available, touch your finger to a metal surface

and skip to step 4.3. Connect the wrist strap to a piece of metal on the sign itself, then wait a moment to ensure proper

grounding.4. Before opening the sign, touch the sides of the sign’s case to discharge any remaining static electricity. 5. Using alligator clips and a jumper wire, connect the component with which you are working to the wrist

strap. If you are working without a wrist strap, connect the jumper wire to a piece of metal on the sign itself.

6. Begin working on the sign.Note: Before removing any component stored in an anti-static bag, hold the bag in one hand while touching a metal surface with the other hand to dissipate any charge on the outside of the bag. Do the same thing to the component inside.

There may be extenuating circumstances that require additional or alternate steps, such as when you are on a ladder or truck. In these instances, grounding yourself or any tools you use is difficult. To reduce the possibility of any static discharge, handle components as little as possible and hold parts at their edges.

WARNING! Hazardous voltage. Contact with high voltage may cause death or serious injury. Always disconnect power to unit prior to servicing.

Always transport or store ESD devicesin an anti-static bag.

Mark each bag with the appropriatepackaging label.

Follow protection guidelines whenever you see theESD symbol or anytime the inside of a sign isexposed. Never assume the situation is safe if the label is missing. ESD can damage circuit traces on any circuit board.

Introduction - Temperature protection

Hot swapping componentsHot-swapping board level sign components can cause failures. These failures may occur immediately, be intermittent, or may show no symptoms until later.

Only swap board level components with the power to the sign disconnected and follow these instructions. If you need to troubleshoot components, contact Adaptive Micro Systems Technical Services at 414-357-2020 extension 519 during business hours.

To swap board level components

1. Disconnect power from the sign. Disconnecting power on a row or case is insufficient, you must disconnect power from the entire sign.

2. Remove the component:• Disconnect the data connection(s) to the board first.• Disconnect the power to the board last.

3. Install the component:• Connect the power to the board first.• Connect the data connection(s) last.

Temperature protectionRefer to “Temperature protection” on page 53 for more details.

Sign shutdownIf the sign reaches a thermal overload condition; internal sign temperatures above 196°F (91°C), one of the following failure modes will occur:

• An over-temperature fault condition at the controller will cause the sign message to blank the display and show the letters “E3” in the upper left side of the sign.

• An over-temperature fault condition at an individual power supply will cause that particular power supply to shut down. The display of the case containing this power supply will blank. The remaining displays to the left of the case with the power supply shutdown will also blank.

• An over-temperature fault condition at the controller’s power supply will result in a random or “garbled” message on the display.

Once the fault condition has cleared, the display will function normally.

FansWhen the temperature inside a case exceeds 100°F (38°C), the case’s fans will start. When the temperature falls below 80°F (27°C), the fans will stop.

WARNING! Hazardous voltage. Contact with high voltage may cause death or serious injury. Always disconnect power to unit prior to servicing.

Billboard sign components - Turbo distribution board

Turbo distribution boardThe turbo distribution board supplies power and data to the driver boards. There is one turbo distribution board in the MB case and one in every SD case or odd numbered cases along the bottom row of the sign.

The communication and video signals are received via fiber optic cable and RS485 wiring from the remote control cabinet through the Fiber Optic / DVI J-box on the CB case. Communication signals sent over RS485 wiring connect to the RS485 Hub and then to the Turbo IN port on the turbo distribution board. Video signals sent over fiber optic cabling are converted into DVI signals, and sent to the first turbo distribution board and then to each subsequent turbo distribution board in the following SD case or cases in the row.

See “Replacing turbo distribution boards” on page 42 for replacement instructions or refer to “Wiring and block diagrams” on page 55 for wiring diagrams.

Figure 17.Turbo board components.

• Turbo IN—Receives data from either the PC controller or the turbo distribution board in the previous odd case.

• Turbo OUT—Sends data to the turbo distribution board in the next odd numbered case when present.• DVI IN—In the MB case, receives DVI data from the DVI / fiber connection coming to the sign from the

remote control cabinet. In all other odd-numbered cases along the bottom row of the sign, DVI data is received from the previous turbo distribution board.

• Channel (1-8) Output—Sends data up each row in the current column and up each row in the column to the immediate right. Think of each driver board column as representing a channel. While facing the front of the sign, the first driver on the left would be numbered one and the last one in the case would be numbered three or four. Each turbo distribution board sends data out to eight columns unless there is less than eight columns of sign associated with the last turbo distribution board.

• Channel Diagram—Driver board / channel output cable mapping diagram.• DC Power—Power input from the case’s power supply.• DIP Switches—Designates the addressing of this case and the case to the immediate right. See “DIP

switch settings on the turbo distribution board” on page 21 for proper settings.• DVI OUT—When there is an odd-numbered case to the right, sends DVI data to the turbo distribution

board in that case.• Power LED—When DC power is connected to the Turbo distribution board the Power LED will be lit

DIP switch settings on the turbo distribution boardIn order to get what you see on the computer monitor to appear correctly on the sign, the DIP switch settings on the turbo distribution board must be properly addressed. The sign is addressed via the turbo distribution boards along the bottom row. Each turbo distribution board handles communication to the rest of the cases above it and to the cases in the column immediately to the right.

For a billboard sign, the addressing starts with 01 and increments to 02 for the next turbo board. Referring back to Figure 5 on page 11 notice there are five turbo distribution boards in the sign, one in the MB case and one in each SD case (odd-numbered cases along the bottom row).

Figure 18.Turbo distribution board DIP switch settings.

The first set of four DIP switches (8-5) should be OFF. The second set of four DIP switches (4-1) are used to designate the location of the turbo distribution board. The first turbo board address in a billboard is 01 and increments to 02 for the next turbo board. For turbo distribution board dip switch settings on a master billboard refer to the charts shown in Figure 19.

Billboard sign components - Light sensor

Excite Billboard Sign Service Manual (pn 1112610101 rev. B) 25

Light sensorTwo light sensors are used to control the dimming of the sign’s LEDs. Dimming is controlled by monitoring the intensity of the light coming into each light sensor and adjusting the brightness of the LEDs accordingly. It’s helpful to think of this as the amount of contrast required to make the sign visible. During the night, it takes very little light to become visible, whereas during the day when things are brighter, the intensity must be raised to increase the contrast level. So at night when there is very little light, the sign automatically adjusts the LEDs to be dimmer. During the day when there is more light, the sign automatically adjusts the LEDs to be brighter.

The cable from the light sensor is specially fitted with a weather tight connector to fit into the back of the MB case. The light sensor cable is connected directly to the panel mount connector on back of the sign.

See “Billboard sign and structure overview” on page 9 and “Panel mount connectors” on page 23.

Maintenance - Earth-grounding Excite Billboard signs

Earth-grounding Excite Billboard signsEach sign must be properly grounded as an essential means of preventing shock, shock hazards, and potential fire hazards.

Figure 27.Earth-grounding illustration

Lightning strike protectionA sign bonded to an earth ground has a means of dissipating the high voltage and current from a lightning strike. The resistance of the grounding electrode must be as low as possible. However, damage can still occur to a sign’s electronic equipment from lightning voltage transients.

Though some surge protection is incorporated into a sign, to protect a sign from high-voltage lightning transients, surge protectors need to be installed in accordance with NEC Articles 280 and 285.

WARNING! Failure to properly ground the sign could result in elevated voltage from lightning entering the sign seeking a path to earth. The high voltage can result in electric shock, fires, and the destruction of the sign from lightning.

Adaptive r equires ground resistance of less than 10 ohms. Verification of ground resistance is essential.

The following guidelines must be followed or the warranty will be void:• Signs must be grounded in accordance

with Article 250 of the National Electrical Code and in accordance with applicable local codes.

• Do not terminate the ground on metal poles. The metal will corrode resulting in deteriorated grounding properties. Additionally, metals poles are often mounted material that does not provide an effective ground.

Adaptive also recommends the following guidelines:• Use copper-clad ground rods as the

grounding electrode because they provide effective grounding for an indefinite period of time.

• Depending on the local soil conditions and codes, more than one ground rod may need to be installed.

• Since moisture becomes more stable at greater distances below the earth's surface, when possible, install the ground rod so that eight feet extend below the frost line to lessen the deviation in the system's resistance.

• Verify the grounding electrode conductor is securely attached at both ends.

Troubleshooting - Troubleshooting display problems

Excite Billboard Sign Service Manual (pn 1112610101 rev. B) 51

Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting display problemsYou may experience problems with the way messages appear or don’t appear on a sign. When diagnosing the source of the problem, it’s helpful to examine what was happening just prior to the problem occurring. For example, if a new communication option was just installed, the steps you take would be different than if you just installed the software. In this section, we provide symptoms along with corresponding causes and diagnostic solutions.

Symptom Possible Cause Diagnostics

Troubleshooting - Bypass driver board procedure

Excite Billboard Sign Service Manual (pn 1112610101 rev. B) 53

Bypass driver board procedureThe purpose of bypassing a driver board is to determine whether a problem exists with the driver board. This is generally performed either on the first driver board (from the bottom) exhibiting problems or on the driver board below it.

To bypass a driver board

1. Use a known good LVDS cable and connect it to the TURBO OUT port of the driver board below the first driver board with the problem (frozen, blank, etc.).

2. Skip the first driver board exhibiting the problem and connect the cable to the next driver board’s TURBO IN port.If the column displays properly (except for the skipped driver board), then the skipped driver board needs to be replaced.

3. If the problem still exists, then repeat this procedure, but starting one driver board down.If the column displays properly (except for the skipped driver board), then the skipped driver board needs to be replaced.

4. If the problem still exists, continue troubleshooting or contact Technical Services.

Temperature protectionExcite signs are designed to monitor and react to varying degrees of heat. Signs are able to prevent equipment failure that could be caused by poor ventilation, high ambient temperatures, or other conditions. Each sign monitors for two thresholds, the dimming threshold and the shutdown threshold.

When the temperature inside a case exceeds 100°F (37.7°C), the case’s fans will start. The fans will stop when the temperature falls below 80°F (26.6°C).

A sign reaches the dimming threshold when the internal temperature has reached 167°F (75°C). Once a sign has reached the dimming threshold it will gradually dim in 10% increments until it reaches 50% decreased brightness (based on ambient conditions). If it remains within the dimming threshold but hasn’t reached the shutdown threshold, it may still shutdown and display “E3” in the upper left corner. When the internal temperature returns to normal, the sign will begin to resume normal operation. As it resumes normal operation, it starts at 50% brightness and increases brightens until normal.

A sign reaches the shutdown threshold when the internal temperature has reached 176°F (91°C).

If the sign reaches the shutdown threshold, it will blank and show the letters “E3” in the upper left. Once the fault condition has cleared, the sign will function normally.

How long does it take for a sign to get back to normalThis depends on the ambient conditions and the temperature inside the sign. Once the ambient temperature inside the sign is normal, the sign may be operating normally within just a few minutes. As a sign begins to regain normal operations, it may appear at 50% or higher brightness until it is fully operational.
