A Message This was the fifth year that Campbell River has participated in BC Bike to Work Week. We were drenched with the traditionally bad weather during BTWW but that did not dampen the enthusiasm for this year’s event. We had a record turnout of cyclists; more new cyclists and a record number of kilometers travelled where vehicles were left behind and green house gases saved. 627 cyclists participated in 2012 which represents a 47% increase in ridership over 2011. There were 19,547 kilometers travelled by bike. This represents a saving of 4382 kg of CO2 saved; roughly the gas usage by a midsized car that travels 20,000 kms per year (Source http://commuterchallenge.ca/blog/? Page id=45) Commuter cycling is obviously growing in Campbell River. Our population is committed to getting fitter, reducing pollution and being part of a more sustainable environment. The 2012 BTWW committee members are: Dave Brown Jen Furst Kate Gigel Linda Nagle Meghan Lawley Melissa Heidema Peter Terpstra Sue McDonald Terryl Bertagnolli

School Challenge: The Golden Wheel The Campbell River Bike to Work Week Committee invited students in School District 72 to compete for The Golden Wheel Award. During Bike to Work Week, teachers encouraged students to try to reduce their carbon footprint. This could be by walking or biking to school, taking transit instead of the family car or car pooling. Every day that a student chose an environmentally friendly way of getting to school they were eligible for daily draw prizes. Golden Wheel 2012 Results

25 classes in Campbell River participated in the Golden Wheel Challenge

Participating students were in grades 1-11 from 7 different schools

In total there were 474 students who participated in the challenge who travelled 10802kms using active or alternative transportation

This represents 2506kgs of green house gases saved! The winning Elementary School class is…...there are 2 winning classes!
