Various spellings of names are recorded as written at the time. James Samuel BIGGS was born in 1806 in Portsea, Portsmouth, England to Samuel James & Jane BIGGS. James, age 18, enrolled in the Royal Sappers & Miners 4 March 1925 in Portsmouth. James, private of the Royal Sappers & Miners, was married to Margaret MARTIN 28 September 1929 after banns in the Kings Chapel, Gibraltar by J S Pering MA Chaplain to the forces. The witnesses were W Martin and Anne Davis. James served as a private for a total of 24 years and 9 days and was discharged 9 January 1849 as being unfit for further military service and admitted as an out-pensioner of the Chelsea Hospital. On discharge his pension was calculated on a service of 23 years & 362 days as he lost 12 days due to being imprisoned by sentence of a Court Marshall from 3-14 April 1936. James was recorded as being 5’8 tall with brown hair and blue eyes and age 42 and character as very good. His service abroad was in Gibraltar from July 1826 to April 1830 and from 14 December 1833 to 24 December 1837. James and Margaret arrived in the Falkland Islands (as part of Governor Moody’s party) with their four children, William, Elizabeth, Amelia and James, on the Hebe 15 January 1842. FIRST GENERATION Children of James and Margaret BIGGS: 1. William James BIGGS born circa December 1831 (not in the Falkland Islands). William was

married to Mary Ann Maria FLEMING 20 March 1852 in the Parish of the Holy Trinity by Banns by James Leith Moody, Colonial Chaplain. The witnesses were James Biggs, William Shailer and Edward McMurray. Mary signed with a X. Neither James or Mary’s occupations or fathers were recorded on the marriage certificate. William, age 81 years & 6 months and a retired master shipwright, died 7 June 1913 and is buried in Grave Ei 761. Mary, age 80, died 21 September 1915 and is buried in Grave Ei 797. [Obituary FIM Dec 1915]

2. Elizabeth Jane BIGGS born circa 1834 in Gibraltar. Elizabeth was married to Charles MELVILLE 24 June 1853 in the Parish of the Holy Trinity by Banns by James Leith Moody, Colonial Chaplain. The witnesses were John George Kelway and William Biggs. Charles and Elizabeth’s fathers’ names were not recorded. Elizabeth, age 29, died 20 June 1862 from consumption and was buried in Grave Ei384. Charles, age 71 and a harbour master from England died 25 October 1876 and was buried in Grave Ei385.

3. Amelia BIGGS born circa 1839 (not in the Falkland Islands). Amelia was married to George

Frederick KELWAY 3 February 1855 by Henry Martyn Faulkner, Acting Colonial Chaplain in Holy Trinity Church by Banns with consent of mother of bride. The witnesses were Charles Melville and Elizabeth Melville. Neither George or Amelia’s occupation or father was recorded. George, age 48 years & 8 months and a carpenter, died in Stanley 6 October 1880 from consumption and was buried 10 October 1880 in Grave Ei387. Amelia, age 75, died 29 June 1911 in Stanley and was buried 2 July 1910 in Grave Ei736.

4. James Samuel BIGGS born circa 1841 (not in the Falkland Islands). James was married to

Harriet SIMPSON 25 February 1864 in Trinity Church Stanley according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Church of England after Banns by Charles Bull MA Colonial Chaplain. The witnesses were Edward Biggs and G Short. James’ father was recorded as James Biggs, pensioner, and Harriet’s father was recorded as Thomas Simpson, pensioner. Harriet, age 29, died in Stanley 27 April 1875 from bronchitis and was buried in 2 May 1875 in Grave F477. James, age 50, died 9 May 1891 from phthisis and was buried at Roy Cove.

5. Edward Falkland BIGGS born 22 January 1843 in the Town of Anson, Port Louis. Edward,

age 28 & an FIC servant, was married to Alma Phoebe SUMMERS, age 18, 22 January 1873 in the Church of Holy Trinity according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church after Banns by Waite H Falkland Islands & Henry Lory Assistant Colonial Chaplain. The witnesses were Edwin Gleadall and Elizabeth Jane Gleadall. Edward’s father was recorded as James Biggs, sapper and miner. Edward Falkland BIGGS was baptised 5 March 1873 by Holy Trinity Church. Edward, age 57, died 30 May 1900 from syncope from dilation of the heart and was buried 3 June 1900 in Grave A142. Alma, age 78 died in Stanley 7 March 1933 and was buried 11 March 1933 in Grave K1039.

6. John Christie BIGGS born 17 April 1846 and baptised 17 May 1846 by Holy Trinity Church.

In February 1861 John was working as an assistant at Cape Pembroke Lighthouse and the Lighthouse Keeper had to dismiss him as he was “dull” and “deficient in his intellect”. [H17; 614]

John, age 84, died in Stanley 12 June 1930 and was buried 14 June 1930 in Grave J1002.

SECOND GENERATION Children of William (1) and Mary Ann BIGGS: 1. William BIGGS born 28 January 1853 in Stanley and baptised William James BIGGS 3 April

1853 by Holy Trinity Church. His father's occupation was recorded as carpenter. William, a carpenter, was married to Alice KING, age 20, 8 May 1878 in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church by Licence by Lowther E Brandon MA Colonial Chaplain. The witnesses were Emilie King and George Thomas King. Alice’s father was recorded as Frederick King, carpenter. William, age 68 and a carpenter, died 1 June 1921 and was buried 5 June 1921 in Grave E860. Alice, age 66, died 28 January 1925 and was buried 30 January 1925 in Grave L914.

2. George Patrick BIGGS born 23 December 1854 and baptised 1 April 1855 by Holy Trinity

Church. His father's occupation was recorded as carpenter. George, age 34 and living on George Island, was married to Honoria SHEEHAN, age 18 and living in Stanley, 5 November 1889 according to the rites and ceremonies of the Church of Rome by Patrick Joseph Diamond, R C Priest. The witnesses were Arthur Henry Biggs and Catherine Bridget Biggs. George’s father was recorded as William Biggs of Stanley and Honoria’s father was not recorded. George died 7 January 1906, age 51, from delirium tremens and asthenia and is buried in Grave Ai179. The informant was his father, W Biggs, Stanley. Honoria travelled to the UK in 1955.

3. Edward Thomas BIGGS born 17 June 1856 in Stanley and baptised 7 December 1856 by

Holy Trinity Church. His father's occupation was recorded as carpenter. Edward arrived at Port Townsend, Washington, USA in 1886. He was married to Mary Cowan BRADLEY in 1886. Mary, age 55, died 25 April 1918 (not in the Falkland Islands). Edward, age 97, died 24 March 1954 (not in the Falkland Islands).

4. Frederick John BIGGS born 28 March 1858 in Stanley and baptised 2 June 1859 by Holy

Trinity Church. His father's occupation was recorded as carpenter. Frederick was married to Phoebe Jane GLEADALL 7 September 1898 by St Mary's Roman Catholic Church. Frederick, Phoebe and their children went to South Africa. Frederick returned to the Falkland Islands in the 1920s. Frederick, age 83, died 6 January 1941 and is buried in Grave M1174.

5. Allen Dale BIGGS born 2 September 1859 in Stanley and baptised 19 November 1860 by

Holy Trinity Church. His father's occupation was recorded as carpenter. Allen, a shepherd at North Arm, was married to Mary Farish RAE, living in Stanley, 3 November 1898 in the house of William James Biggs according to the Rites & Ceremonies of the Established Church by Licence by Edwin Coupland Aspinall Canon of Christ Church & Camp Chaplain. The witnesses were James Rae and Madge Pimm. Mary’s father was recorded as John Davidson Rae, shepherd. Allan died in 1905 (not in the Falkland Islands). In 1923 Mary was living at 23 Galloway Street, Maxwelltown, Dumfries, Scotland.

6. Mary Ann Maria BIGGS born 21 July 1861 in Stanley. Her father's occupation was recorded

as carpenter. Mary was married to Walter FELTON, age 32 and a sub-manager of a sheep farm, living in Stanley, 10 September 1884 in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church after Banns by Lowther E Brandon MA Colonial Chaplain. The witnesses were William Biggs and E T Biggs. Walter’s father was recorded as Henry William Felton, sergeant major 2nd Life Guards. Mary, Walter and their family moved to Chile. Walter later deserted Mary and the children. Fred was left with friends and Mary and the other three were brought back to the Falkland Islands. [Family history] Mary died 4 November 1901 from phthisis and is buried in Grave B232.

7. Christopher BIGGS born 25 December 1862 in Stanley. His father's occupation was recorded as carpenter. Christopher, age 7 months, was buried 6 August 1863 (no death or grave record).

8. Ellen Margery BIGGS born 23 November 1864 in Stanley. Her father's occupation was

recorded as carpenter. Ellen died in 1960 (not in the Falkland Islands). 9. Catherine Bridget BIGGS born 28 November 1866 in Stanley and baptised 9 December

1866. Her father's occupation was recorded as carpenter. Married to Augustus Octavius “Octave” FLEURET 19 January 1895 by Mario Luis Migone, St Mary’s Catholic Church. The witnesses were Vincent A H Biggs and Alice Coulson. Catherine, Octave and their two daughters later went to Chile. Catherine died in 1925 (not in the Falkland Islands).

10. Madeline BIGGS born 23 January 1869 in Stanley and baptised 19 June 1869 by Holy Trinity

Church. Her father's occupation was recorded as carpenter. Madeline Agatha was married to Sidney James KIRWAN 9 June 1898 by St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. On 18 June 1918 Sidney wrote to the manager of the FIC to let him know where he was living in case he was due a bonus. He arrived in England 10 April 1918 and at the time of writing was living at 36 York Street, Portman Square, W1. Madeline died in the 1950s (not in the Falkland Islands).

11. Vincent Arthur Henry BIGGS born 12 June 1870 in Stanley. His father's occupation was

recorded as carpenter. Vincent started working for the Falkland Islands Company Ltd 1 January 1886 and by 4 December 1913 had worked constantly for them apart from two months when he went to Montevideo and Punta Arenas. [FIC/EF/] Vincent, a carpenter, was married to Mary Elizabeth PIMM 30 December 1896 by Patrick O'Grady Parish Priest St Mary's Church. The witnesses were Octave Fleuret and Madge Pimm. Mary’s father was recorded as Samuel Pimm, blacksmith. Mary, age 73, died 7 October 1945 and is buried in Grave M 1305. Vincent, age 79 and a justice of the peace, died 20 September 1949 and was buried 23 September 1949 in Grave M1409.

12. Alfred Horton BIGGS born 28 January 1872 in Stanley. His father's occupation was recorded

as carpenter. On leaving school he was apprenticed to the Falkland Islands Company as a shipwright and carpenter, remaining in their employ until 1894 when he left for Port Townsend, Washington, USA on board the Stirling. He was employed for some time there in his brother’s shipyard. He then travelled to England with two of his sisters before arriving back in the Falkland Islands in January 1897. [Obituary Penguin 1 Nov 1935] Alfred was married to Ana Georgina McCARTHY by St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church 27 September 1899. Alfred, age 63, died 27 October 1935 in Stanley and is buried in Grave M1085. Ana, age 94, died 17 July 1971 in Stanley and was buried 20 July 1971 in Grave R2166.

Children of Elizabeth (2) and Charles MELVILLE: 1. Charles James MELVILLE born 17 August 1854 in Stanley and baptised 8 October 1854 by

Holy Trinity Church. His father’s occupation was recorded as master mariner.

2. Elizabeth Ann/Hannah MELVILLE born 25 April 1856 in Stanley and baptised 6 July 1856 by Holy Trinity Church. Her father’s occupation was recorded as master mariner. Elizabeth was married to David EARLE, an English shepherd living at Hillhead, 30 July 1885 at Mrs Armstrong's house, Darwin, according to the rites & ceremonies of Presbyterian Church by Governor's licence by William Hill Philip, Minister. The witnesses were William Armstrong and Sarah Armstrong. David’s father was recorded as William Earle, carpenter and Elizabeth’s father was recorded as Charles Melville, harbour master. Elizabeth died 12 July 1908 at Hillside, Mount Pleasant, age 51, of heart failure and is buried in Grave Ei696. [Obituary FIM Aug

1908] David finished working for the Falkland Islands Company Ltd 14 February 1913 and departed for Liverpool on the Oronsa 16 April 1913. When his son Arthur married in 1919 David was recorded as being a shepherd and, according to the account of the wedding, living in Norwich, England.

3. Margery Amelia MELVILLE born 28 March 1858 in Stanley and baptised 20 July 1858 by

Holy Trinity Church. Her father’s occupation was recorded as master mariner. Margery died 8 September 1858 from dentition (no grave record).

4. Sarah Madelina MELVILLE born 30 October 1859 in Stanley and baptised 27 September

1860 by Holy Trinity Church. Her father’s occupation was recorded as mariner. Sarah, who was living in Stanley, was married to William ARMSTRONG, a sub-overseer living at Darwin Harbour, 22 June 1880 in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church after Banns by Lowther E Brandon MA Colonial Chaplain. The witnesses were John G Kelway and Elizabeth Melville. William’s father was recorded as John Armstrong, shepherd and Sarah’s father as Charles Melville, harbour master.

5. Emily Amelia Louisa MELVILLE born 23 December 1861 in Stanley and baptised 22 June

1862 by Holy Trinity Church. Her father’s occupation was recorded as pilot. Emily died 3 August 1862 and is buried in Grave Ei383.

Children of Amelia (3) and George KELWAY: 1. James Richard BIGGS born 11 January 1855 in Stanley and baptised James Richard

KELWAY 11 March 1855 by Holy Trinity Church. His father's occupation was recorded as carpenter. James died 28 January 1896 when the scow he was working on crushed him. [FIM

Feb 1896] James was buried 31 January 1896 in Grave I594.

2. John George “Jack “KELWAY born 21 February 1857 in Stanley and baptised 5 April 1857 by Holy Trinity Church. His father's occupation was recorded as carpenter. John first started working for the FIC Ltd in Stanley as a boy in 1875. In July 1882 he was put on regular staff. [FIC/D12, pg 314] John, age 26 and a labourer living in Stanley, was married to Mary Ann ATKINS, age 20 ½ , 5 October 1882 in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church after Banns by Lowther E Brandon MA Colonial Chaplain. The witnesses were George Clethero and William Dettleff. John’s father was recorded as George Frederick Kelway, carpenter, and Mary’s father was recorded as Richard Atkins, pensioner. John, captain of the Sissie, was presented with a gold watch for rescue attempt on J.R.Kelly [FIM May & July 1900] Mary travelled to Punta Arenas, Chile in 1922 to visit her son and daughter who were living there. John was awarded an annual pension by the FIC of £54 commencing 1 July 1913. John, an engine driver, died 15 December 1920, age 64, and was buried 19 December 1920 in Grave Ei855. Mary, age 75, died in Stanley Wednesday 13 May 1936 and was buried 15 May 1936 in Grave K1094. [Obituary Penguin 18 May 1936, pg 2]

3. Fanny Jane KELWAY born 5 September 1858 in Stanley and baptised 2 January 1859 by

Holy Trinity Church. Her father's occupation was recorded as carpenter. Fanny was married to Robert YATES 16 January 1881 by St Mary’s Catholic Church. Robert died 11 August 1901 of mitral valve disease and cardiac dropsy and is buried in Grave Ai176. Fanny died 20 June 1904, age 46, of general debility and is buried in Grave Ai174.

4. George Frederick KELWAY born 20 July 1860 in Stanley and baptised 27 September 1860

by Holy Trinity Church. His father's occupation was recorded as carpenter. George, age 30 and a navvy living in Stanley, was married to (1) Susannah HAMPSON, age 17 and living in Stanley, 4 June 1891 in the house of John Kelway according to the Rites and Ceremonies of

the Established Church by Licence by Lowther E Brandon MA Colonial Chaplain. The witnesses were John G Kelway and Letitia Lily Kelway. George’s father was recorded as George Frederick Kelway, carpenter, and Susannah’s father was recorded as Edward Hampson, hatter. Susannah, age 32, died 19 October 1906 in Stanley from tuberculosis of the lungs and was buried 21 October 1906 in Grave I593. George, a widower and clerk, was married to (2) Ann CAIRNS, widow, 17 May 1908 in Christ Church Cathedral by C Rome Hall, Assistant Cathedral Chaplain. The witnesses were Elsie Kelway ad John F Summers. George’s father was recorded as George Frederick Kelway, carpenter, and Ann’s father was recorded as James Atherton, hatter. Ann was born 10 August 1868 at Gee Cross, Hyde, Cheshire. George, age 62, died 22 March 1923 and was buried in Grave K884. Ann, age 82 and a widow, died 24 July 1950 and was buried 27 July 1950 in Grave K1431.

5. William Henry KELWAY born 1 June 1862 in Stanley and baptised 22 June 1862 by Holy

Trinity Church. His father's occupation was recorded as carpenter. Henry died 17 September 1862, age 3 months, from water on the brain and was buried 21 September 1862 in Grave Ei386.

6. Henry Osborne KELWAY born 31 July 1863 in Stanley and baptised 30 August 1863 by Holy

Trinity Church. His father's occupation was recorded as carpenter. Henry, age 25 and a shepherd living in Stanley, was married to Eliza Jane WHITE, age 18, 11 June 1889 in the house of John Kelway according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church by Licence by me Lowther E Brandon MA Colonial Chaplain. The witnesses were Henry White and John George Kelway. George’s father was recorded as George Frederick Kelway, carpenter, and Eliza’s father was recorded and Henry White, mariner. Eliza, age 19, died in Stanley 9 January 1891 from phthisis and was buried 13 January 1891 in Grave I607.

7. Janet Annie KELWAY born 22 June 1865 in Stanley and baptised 3 August 1865 by Holy

Trinity Church. Her father's occupation was recorded as carpenter. Janet, age 21 and living in Stanley, was married to John COLEMAN, age 22 and a baker living in Stanley, 17 June 1886 in the New Infant Schoolroom according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Presbyterian Church by Licence by William Hill Philip Presbyterian Minister. The witnesses were James R Kelway and Amelia Jane Kelway. John’s father was recorded as John Coleman, carpenter, and Janet’s father was recorded as George Frederick Kelway, carpenter. Annie, age 79 and a housewife, died 21 December 1944 and was buried in Grave O1290. John, age 83 and retired, died 13 November 1947 and was buried 15 November 1947 in Grave P1358.

8. Amelia Jane KELWAY born 19 April 1867 in Stanley and baptised 18 June 1867 by Holy

Trinity Church. Her father's occupation was recorded as carpenter. Amelia, age 20 ½ and living in Stanley was married to (1) John HOPE, mariner living on the schooner Hornet in Stanley, 27 December 1887 at the house of John Coleman according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church by Licence by Lowther E Brandon MA Colonial Chaplain. The witnesses were James Richard Kelway and Mary Ann McDaid. Amelia’s father was recorded as George Frederick Kelway, carpenter, and John’s father was recorded as Andrew Hope, anchor maker. He sank almost immediately and was not seen again. [FIM Oct 1889] Amelia, age 23 and a widow living in Stanley, was married to (2) Claro SURIEZ, age 45 and a widower and shepherd of San Salvador and Stanley, 17 July 1890 in the house of Joseph Alazia according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church by Licence by Lowther E Brandon MA Colonial Chaplain. The witnesses were Charles C Kelway and Edith Alazia. Claro’s father was recorded as Mariano Suriez, gaucho and Amelia’s as George Kelway, joiner. Claro died, 10 June 1904, age 60, of fatty degeneration of the heart and is buried at Salvador. Amelia was married to (3) P G CHILDS in Punta Arenas, Chile, 3 December 1910.

Charles and Mary departed for Liverpool on the Orcoma 11 June 1912.

2. William EARLE born 4 August 1888 at Hillhead, Darwin. His father’s occupation was

recorded as shepherd. Worked for the Falkland Islands Company Ltd from 23 March 1904 until 4 June 1913, starting as a Boy on £3-0-0 per month and finishing as a Shepherd on £5-10-0 a month. 7. Victorina Hennessy YATES born 14 December 1891. Victorina was married to Charles

John Bond PAICE, shepherd of Rincon Grande, 9 February 1910 in Christ Church Cathedral after Banns by Edward J Seymour, Chaplain & Hon Canon. The witnesses were William Charles McDaid and Caroline Rosalie McDaid. Victorina died 21 December 1956 at sea on route from Montevideo to Stanley and is buried in Grave P1580. Charles died 6 January 1960 at Stanley and is buried in Grave P1656.

8. Lavinia YATES born 25 April 1895. Lavinia was married to Walter John SUMMERS,

labourer, 18 August 1915 at Christ Church Cathedral by C McDonald Hobley, Chaplain. The witnesses were Sylvia Summers, Robert Yates, V Summers and John F Summers. Walter died 28 August 1963 in Stanley and is buried in Grave L1742. Lavenia died 14 August 1982, age 87, in Stanley and is buried in Grave L1980.

9. St Anastasia YATES born 1 January 1899. In 1907 he was cared for by Mrs McAtasney and

The witnesses were G Kelway, junior and Alice Etheridge. Frank’s father was recorded as Walter Donald Howatt, engineer and Elsie’s as George Frederick Kelway, storekeeper. On 14 July 1913 the Governor appointed

Frank as Assistant Light-keeper at an annual salary of £96. He also received a house allowance of £36 a year. Sometime after January 1914 Frank and his family went to the UK. They arrived back from Liverpool with their family on board the Orcoma 8 December 1919. Frank must have resumed working for the Falkland Islands Company Ltd as in 1920 he represented them in a football match. In October 1927 Frank went to Punta Arenas in service with HMS Afterglow. On the 23 April 1936 Frank, Elsie and two of their children, Evelyn and Eric, departed for the UK on board the Lafonia. By November 1936 Frank was employed on mv Cameroni running between Glasgow & New York. [Penguin Wed 4 Nov 1936] In 1941 Frank was working as a shipyard worker. Frank died in Glasgow 20 December 1964 age 76.

3. Ernest Arthur KELWAY born 9 September 1894 and baptised 24 October 1894 by Holy

Trinity Church. His father's occupation was recorded as labourer. Ernest, a sailor on board the ss California drowned 7 February 1917 as a result of an attack by an enemy submarine. He drowned attempting to save two babies in the water. Both babies were saved but as a non-swimmer he drowned. [FIM May 1917]

4. Edward George KELWAY born 26 September 1897 and baptised 7 November 1897 by Holy

Trinity Church. His father's occupation was recorded as labourer. Edward, age 39 and a skilled labourer, went to the UK in 1937 to visit relatives. His wife Elise, age 38 and born in Manchester, accompanied him. Edward, age 54 and a blacksmith, died 29 September 1951 from bronchitis and a pulmonary embolism and was buried in Grave 1463. Elise, age 53 and a housekeeper, emigrated to the UK in 1952.

Church Cathedral. His father's occupation was recorded as baker. Fought during World War I in King Edward’s Horse Regiment no. 1118. Discharged 12 October 1919. Supposed to have died 6 April 1965 in South America. Owned an English hotel called Costa del Sud in Argentina in the 1940s. In 1960 he had Swan Hotel in Rio Gallegos, Argentina. [Per Monica May] John was still alive when his father died in 1947.

5. Malvina COLEMAN born 12 August 1894 and baptised Lily Malvina COLEMAN 26 August

1894 by Christ Church Cathedral. Her father's occupation was recorded as baker. Lillie departed for Punta Arenas 29 July 1908 on the Orita with Consul and Mrs Rowen who she was in service to. From 1 November 1909 10 shillings of her wage was paid each month to her father, John Coleman. She was still in service to the Rowens and living in Punta Arenas. 8. Eva Amelia HANSEN born 6 October 1891 in Stanley and baptised 11 December 1898 by

Christ Church Cathedral. Her father's occupation was recorded as mariner. Eva, age 22, was married to Alexander PITALUGA, age 23 and a sheep farmer, 7 January 1914 at Christ Church Cathedral by Banns by C McDonald Hobley. Chaplain. The witnesses were William John McAtasney and Maggie McAtasney. Alexander’s father was recorded as Alexander McIntosh Pitaluga, sheep farmer, and Eva’s father was recorded as Charles Hansen, shepherd. Eva and Alexander travelled to Punta Arenas, Chile in 1920. Alexander died 7 January 1958 at Stanley and is buried in Grave Q1605. Eva died 2 October 1970 at Stanley and is buried in Grave Q1796.

9. George Dederick HANSEN born 3 May 1893 in Stanley and baptised George Didrick

HANSEN 10 February 1901 by Christ Church Cathedral. His father's occupation was recorded as blacksmith. George, a shepherd, was married to Rachel McRae 20 June 1916 at Weddell Island Station by Governor's Licence by C McDonald Hobley, Chaplain. The

George was 5 foot 3 inches tall with grey eyes and black hair and Rachel was 5 foot 3 ½ inches tall with grey eyes and dark hair. Rachel, age 59, died 5 May 1957 in Stanley from a heart attack and was buried 8 May 1957 in Grave Q1586. George, age 73 and a steward, went on holiday to Montevideo in 1966. George, age 76 and the steward of the Colony Club, died 28 June 1969 in Stanley and was buried 3 July 1969 in Grave Q1784.

10. Frederick Henry HANSEN born 13 November 1894 in Stanley. Frederick, a cook, was

married to Louisa Hannah WATSON 8 July 1920 at North Arm, East Falkland by Special Licence by J Stanley Smith, Clerk in Holy Orders. The witnesses were William Henry Watson and Emma Jane Watson. Frederick’s father was recorded as Charles Hansen, navvy, and Louisa’s father was recorded as William Henry Watson, shepherd. Frederick and Louisa later divorced. Frederick, age 41 and a labourer, went to Punta Arenas seeking employment in 1936. Frederick was 5 foot 2 inches tall with grey eyes and dark brown hair. Frederick, age 49 and a cook in the Royal Navy, went to the UK in 1944 on naval service. Frederick died prior to September 1970 but there is no record of his death in the Falkland Islands. Louisa, age 76 and a widow, died 25 January 1978 in Stanley and was buried 28 January 1978 in Grave U1913.

11. Helbert Stanley “Stanley” HANSEN born 10 March 1897 and baptised Hilbert Stanley HANSEN 4 July 1897. His father's occupation was recorded as sailor. Helbert was married to Monica Barbara Helen NANDEN (not in the Falkland Islands).

12. Winifred Letitia “Winnie” HANSEN born 12 October 1898 and baptised 11 December 1898

by Christ Church Cathedral. Her father's occupation was recorded as mariner. Married William Henry CLEMENS. Winifred came to the Falkland Islands on holiday in 1925. Winifred was living at Fenton Station, Magallanes in 1934.

3. Sarah Elizabeth DOOLAN born 30 October 1886 in Stanley. Baptised 9 January 1887 by

Holy Trinity Church. Married to Andrew Christian JENSEN (see (1) widower of Sarah’s sister Mary), a widower and captain in the Merchant Service living in Punta Arenas, 1 August 1906 in the house of Mr Herbert Hardy, Punta Arenas by Edwin C Aspinall, British Chaplain. Andrew died prior to his daughter’s marriage in 1932. Sarah was confirmed by St James Church, Punta Arenas 12 March 1933 age 46.

4. Emily Rose Angela DOOLAN born 25 December 1888 at Punta Arenas and baptised 17

March 1889 in Punta Arenas. Her godparents were John Doolan and Ellen Doolan née McGregor. Emily DOOLAN born circa 1888 (not in Falkland Islands). Married to Murdo McDONALD, age 27 and a manager living in Punta Arenas, 18 November 1911 in St James’ Church, Punta Arenas. Emily was 23. Emily died in 1926 in Mendoza, Argentina. Murdo died in the British Hospital, Buenos Aires, 23 April 1944 and was buried in the British Cemetery Tuesday 25 April 1944.

Nora died in South America in 1993.

Edward, age 35 and a shepherd, drowned at Walker Creek sometime from the 16-20 July 1949. Alexandrina, age 37 and a widow, died in Stanley 1 May 1952 from pulmonary tuberculosis and was buried 5 May 1952 in Grave Q1482.

4. James Keith “Jimmy” BIGGS born 28 January 1924 at Roy Cove and baptised 23 February 1924 by Christ Church Cathedral. His father's occupation was recorded as shepherd. James, age 56 and a shepherd, died at North Arm 21 August 1980 from burns sustained when the bunkhouse was severely damaged by fire. James was buried 25 August 1980 in Grave U1812. The witnesses were Malvina Reive and Leonard Reive. Florence’s father was recorded as Hugh Jones, mariner, and Colin’s father was recorded as Peter McKinnon, farmer. Colin was born 27 August 1894 in South Uist, Inverness-shire, Scotland. Florence and Colin, a seaman, went on holiday to England in 1936. Colin emigrated to the UK in 1946. Florence and Peter emigrated to Tasmania to reside with Colin in 1947. Florence, a housekeeper, and Peter, a police constable, went to the UK on holiday in 1960.

Church Cathedral. His father's occupation was recorded as mariner. In 1946 William, a hotelkeeper, travelled to the UK to participate in the Victory Parade. In 1954 William, a police constable, travelled to the UK to attend the Boys’ Brigade International Camp. William, manager of the Government Employees Canteen, was married to Theodora Emily MAY, divorced clerk, 14 October 1961 at the Office of the Registrar General, Stanley by Harold Bennett, Registrar General. The witnesses were P W Peck and J M Hardy. William’s father was recorded as Hugh Jones, deceased mariner, and Theodora’s father was recorded as William David Noah Betts, farm manager. Theodora, a clerk, went to the Argentine for medical treatment in 1972.

4. Alma Rose JONES born 8 November 1921 at San Salvador and baptised 7 July 1922 by

Alma, a teacher, was married to Dearle Jackson DRAYCOTT, supervisor, Camp Education, 12 July 1945 at Christ Church Cathedral by R G R Calvert, Chaplain. Maurice, a farmer, was married to Kathleen Gladys PERRY 22 August 1938 at St Mary's Catholic Church, Stanley by Special Licence by Hugh F Drumm, RC Priest. The witnesses were June Elliot Myles and William N Paice. Geoffrey’s father was recorded as William McGill, shepherd, and Agnes’ father was recorded as Alexander Berntsen, assistant manager. Geoffrey, age 51 and a cook at San Carlos, died in Stanley 20 July 1962 from cardiac asthma and was buried 25 July 1962 in Grave S1721. Agnes, a widow and cook, was married to (2) William HOGGARTH, cowman gardener from England 2 August 1963 at Port San Carlos, East Falkland by Eric Thornley, Senior Chaplain. In March 1948 Malcolm was living at 18 James Street, Stanley. [FIC/EF/] Malcolm, age 93, died in Bitterne, Southampton, England and his cremated remains were buried 7 June 2008 in Stanley Cemetery.
