Lesson Learned"About four or five months ago I

stopped paying my tithes, and stoppedcompletely in obeying God. Believe me,I'm in trouble. I've even started thesmoking habit once again, after havingquit for 10 or 11 months. I knew thepenalties but somehow I deliberatelydisobeyed. While I was trying to obeyGod and His law, things were neverbetter. Now I'm in the worst financialcrisis I've ever been in. Also, I've become very sickly. Ask God to heal meand to help me through this terriblemess. I've learned my lesson. Obedience to God really is the only way tobe happy."

HERE'S HOW TO USEYOUR SECOND TITHE

Each year you brethren have many questions which arise concerning the problem of-how to PROPERLY USE YOUR SECONDTITHE. Here are some of the main principles to guide you inplanning your attendance at God's Festival-this fall! Plus, youwill find many concrete examples, covering the problems which

most often arise.

((WILL A MAN rob God?Yet ye have robbed me.But ye say, Wherein have

we robbed thee? IN TITHES ANDOFFERINGS. Ye are CURSED with acurse: for ye have robbed me, EVENTHIS WHOLE NATION" (Mal.3:8-9).

So thunders the Eternal God Almighty, the Creator of heaven andearth. Yet the average man on the streetgoes blithely on his way-blindly ignorant of the CURSE now resting onthis great nation of ours. Nevertheless, ignorant or not, THE CURSE IS STILLTHERE!

Our exports are being turned backwhile our stores are being flooded bythe imported shoes from Italy, transistors from Japan, suits from HongKong, cars from France and Germany, nails and wire products from Japan andGermany and dozens upon dozens ofother items.

Go to your nearest sporting goodsstore and check the prices of baseballor softball gloves. Name brands suchas Rawlings or Spalding retail from$20 to $35 in most stores. A comparable glove imported from Japan, whilenot quite as high in quality but nonetheless a good glove, will sell in thesame store for just under $10. Nowwhich glove would you buy? Our economy is being undermined-and government experts don't know why.

Staggering National Debt

Our national debt, the total amount

owed by the private, public and corporate interests, is about to rocket intoorbit. As reported to you in the September PLAIN TRUTH, the total public debt in the U.S. is now over ONETRILLION, FIFTY-EIGHT BILLIONDOLLARSl

Employment now stands at an alltime high, BUT SO DOES UNEMPLOYMENT, Individual, private debtis becoming so staggering that totallyunprecedented, almost unbelievablenumbers of individuals, families andsmall businesses are trooping daily intobankruptcy courts.

Our gross national product, that isthe total value of the goods and services

produced by this country, this past yearwas FIVE HUNDRED FIFTY BILLION DOLLARS. God's tithe of thatamount would be FIFTY-FIVE BILLION DOLLARS for the past year.

God's Tithe Misused

That is almost exactly the amount ofour national budget-fifty-six billiondollars, which was allotted for defense spending. God didn't get Histithe. We as a nation stole it and madean offering to the pagan god of war!

IS IT ANY WONDER WE AREUNDER A CURSE?

We have taken the very money which

should be used to help proclaim theGospel of the Kingdom of God andused it to study and prepare to bringdeath, destruction and misery on mankind. What an effrontery to the Onewho blessed us with this fantasticwealth to start with!

The parable of the talents, Matthew25: 14-30, shows us that God is holdingus accountable for the way we lise or

misuse the physical blessings and moneyHe has given us.

God has abundantly blessed us andprovided the tremendous, unparalleledwealth of our nation.

"I have made the earth, the man andthe beast that are upon the ground, bymy great power and by my outstretchedarm, and HAVE GIVEN IT unto whomit seemed meet unto me" (Jer. 27: 5) .

In another place, He says, "The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the lord of hosts" (Hag. 2:8).

All THINGS rightfully belong toHim because He is the One who createdthem. All He asks in return for lettingus use His wealth is that we pay Histithe to Him.

Reason for the Tithe

In order to exist and carry on theirbusiness, the nations of the world todayimpress upon their subjects various

taxes. We have inheritance tax, property tax, amusement tax, liquor tax, cigarette tax, gas tax, school tax, state

The GOOD NEWS

tax and income tax. Without thesetaxes, there would be no means ofcarrying on the duties of the state.

God likewise taxes His subjects. Thedifference is that His tax is far moreliberal. With God there are no hiddentaxes, no taxes on taxes nor the continual striving and struggling to figure out a new way to extort moremoney from the populace.

God's Way is simple, as His Wayalways is! He says one-tenth of allwe earn or produce is HOLY untothe lord (lev. 27:30-33).

This tenth or TITHE is to be usedto carry out the Work of God, to proclaim the Gospel and to provide forthe called and chosen ministry. In theOld Testament, Numbers 18 :20-24,God gave the tithe to the levites. Hechose this tribe to do the work of thepriesthood or the ministry as it is calledtoday. They were to have no inheritancewith the other children of Israel butto receive of the tithes for their support.

Christ changed the priesthood fromthe physical tribe of levi to the spiritual priesthood of Melchisedec (Heb.7: 12). The bulk of the seventh chapter of Hebrews is concerned withexplaining the changing of the priesthood and the resultant change of thosewho were to receive the tithe.

The Apostle Paul further clarifiesthe subject in I Corinthians 9:1-14where he shows that ". . . they

which preach the gospel should live ofthe gospel." Just as the tribe of levidid in ancient Israel.

This law is every bit as binding uponus today as it was upon ancient Israel.Because of our DISOBEDIENCE tothis law, we as a nation are sufferingthe CURSE of God. Our debts skyrocket and our financial burden increases. That curse will not be removeduntil we as a nation begin to obey andserve the Creator God by giving Himwhat is rightfully His.

You as an individual can be forgivenfor having broken this law and beremoved from under the penalty of thisfinancial curse. Yet even among thepeople of God, some do not alwaysobey and honor Him with a full andcomplete tithe of their increase.

Obedience Brings Blessings

Turn once again to Malachi 3 andread Verse 10. "Bring ye ALL THETITHES into the storehouse, that theremay be meat in mine house, and proveme now herewith, saith the lord ofhosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out ablessing, that there shall not be roomenough to receive it."

Perhaps this is the very reason manyof you have not been blessed financiallyas abundantly as some of the otherbrethren in the Church. If you have notbeen rendering a full and completetithe to God, YOU ARE UNDER ACURSE ! You are not going to beblessed until you do begin to give toGod what is rightfully His.

God is holding you accountable forthe way you use His money. His titheis to be used so that His Kingdom maygrow and so that thousands and eventually millions and billions more humanbeings may be brought to repentanceand deep conversion.

A Just God

Being a JUST God (Isa. 45 :21)God has not only provided a tenthfor Himself that His Kingdom maygrow, but He has also provided a tenthtor YOU that you may grow.

PROOF TWO

SEVEN PROOFSof the TRUB CHURCH of God

This world is filled with churches! But Jesus said He would buildHIS Church. WHICH ONE DID HE BUILD? Here is theSECOND major, infallible, irrefutable, unshakable, positive andABSOLUTE PROOF of God's ONE AND ONLY True Church!

by Garner Ted Armstrong

ARE WE "CLOSER" to some.1'1.. churches than others? Are "our

beliefs" in some way "similar"to the beliefs of other churches?

Do YOlt know of churches that arealmost "just like we are" in MOSTthings-but differ in just a FEW pointsof "belief"?

You may THINK you do--but afterreading this whole series of vitally important PROOFS of the True Churchof God, you will really KNOW-andknow that you know-that there isNO CHURCH ON EARTH that iseven remotely like the ONE TRUECHURCH, except in some FEW, andcomparatively MINOR, "doctrinal"points!

In the first article in this series,we saw the fact that God RULES thisChurch-the ONLY Church willingto unconditionally SURRENDER toHim, humbly accepting His absoluteAUTHORITY in ez;erything! ThatGod is our RULER is proof numberone!

PROOF NUMBER TWO:THREE DEFINITE SIGNS!

The second infallible PROOF ofGod's True Church is composed ofthree major parts. In a few cases, achurch of this present evil world, ora now DEAD remnant of what wedto be the SARDIS era of God's TrueChurch may have one, or even TWO ofthe three identifying SIGNS given inthe Bible.

But that is only ONE PART OFONE PROOF OUT OF SEVEN! It

takes the perfect and complete TOTAL-all seven proofs-to really identifythe TRUE CHURCH CHRIST BUILT!

There is NO group on this earthshocking as it may seem-which haseven ONE of these seven MAJORproofs of where God is working! Somehave a PART of one, such as a fewdoctrinal truths - but viewed in thewrong light! Some may have one, oreven TWO PARTS of this second major point-but NONE has even ONECOMPLETE PROOF from the seven, and that means NONE has as muchas two. Remember, unless ALL SEVENare present-there is NO PROOF OFTHE TRUE CHURCH OF GOD!

The DEVIL knows these three signs!Satan knows the Truth about prophecy, about doctrine, about GOD'S POWER!But the Devil won't submit to theRULERSHIP of God, nor will heOBEY what he knows!

Surprising as it sounds - SATANHIMSELF could show more knowledgeof basic truths than ANY FALSECHURCH ON THIS EARTH!

The BIG difference is, he will NOTOBEY!

But the True Church of God notonly believes these basic truths- thesegreat identifying PROOFS of God'sTrue Church-but obeys them!

A Confusing Jumble of UNames"

The first of the three definite signsforming this second great proof is theNAME of God's True Church. Is theTrue Church of God the church ofMartin Luther? Is it a church named

after a certain "method" of churchgovernment? Is it a church of thepeople - that is, a "congregational"church? That would be like saying itis a "church" church! Is it a churchwhich believes in the advent (secondcoming of Christ) and is therefore an"adventist" church? Is it a "TwoSeed-In-The-Spirit Predestinarian Baptist Church"? NO, it is not! Yet allthese weird names can be found invarious reference books, and are theactual names of some of the churchesof this world. The True Church ofGod is not "Moravian," "Mennonite"or "Mormon"-it is not "Latter-Day,"or "Reorganized"!

It is not Buddhist, Shintoist or Baptist; not the Fire Baptized HolinessChurch, the Pillar of Fire Church, theOld Order of Yorker Brethren Church, the Amish Church, The Duck RiverBaptists, Free Will Baptists, GeneralSix Principle Baptists, Primitive Baptists, Regular Baptists, Separate Baptists,or Seventh Day Baptists!

In short, the True Church of Godis just exactly that-the CHURCH OFGOD!

And, according to yoltr Bible, theONLY name that the Creator-RulerGod will recognize as the identifyingsign of HIS Church, the very Body ofJesus Christ and the Church whichJesus built, is "THE CHURCH OFGOD"!

Shocking as it may seem, all thesecounterfeit churches, with their sometimes laughable, pathetic and somewhatpitiful "names," openly admit they arenot the CHURCH OF GOD!

6

When asked, "To which church doyou belong?" and a person answers tothe "Church of Martin Luther"-he IS

probably telling the truth.'That is, he is affirming that he IS

NOT a member of God's Church, atrue member of the very Body of JesusChrist, a member of the CHURCH OFGOD-but that he IS a member of achurch which Martin Luther built! Ifhe answers by any other statement ofa similar nature, as I have just mentioned (and you can find all thesenames listed in The Handbook of Denominations, the book entitled TheSmall Sects of America, or by lookingin an Almanac) then he most certainlyIS NOT a member of the True Churchof God!

The True Name of God's Church

A minister, preaching to God's truepeople may begin to describe the TrueChurch of God. He may say, in hissermon, "This is the very Church whichJesus built - that LIVING Churchwhich is the very Body of Christ, theChurch in which Guu RULES - theTRUE CHURCH OF GOD!"

But is he saying this whole phraseis to be taken as the "name" of theChurch? Is this the official TITLEthat God Himself places upon His ownTrue Church?

Wouldn't it look a little silly if youwere to receive a letter from Mr. Armstrong with "THE TRUE CHURCHOF THE LIVING CHRIST - THECHURCH IN WHICH GOD RULES-THE TRUE CHURCH OF GOD"as the letterhead?

In other words, brethren, thoughthere are MANY descriptloe passagesabout the True Church of God in theBible, it would look a little silly topaint a sign with these as the name tobe put over the door.

Wherever Almighty God speaks ofHis True Church, identifying it BYNAME-the name is always the same.'

Jesus prayed, "And now I am nomore in the world, but these are inthe world [but not OF the world],and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own NAME thosewhom thou hast given me, that theymay be one, as we are" (John 17: 11),

The GOOD NEWS

Jesus prayed the Father to KEEP Hisown true people in and through a particular NAME! Jesus prayed that namewould be the name of the Father'

Did the Father honor this prayer?Notice Acts 20 and Verse 28. "Takeheed therefore unto yourselves," wrotethe Apostle Paul to the Ephesian Elders, "and to all the flock, over thewhich the Holy Spirit hath made youoverseers, to feed the CHURCH OFGOD, which he hath purchased withhis own blood."

God DID honor the prayer of JesusChrist! He DID give His own name tothe True Church!

Wherever the actual name of theChurch as an organized Body is givenin the New Testament-it is called theCHURCH OF GOD!

Oftentimes, the geographical locationwas added to the legal NAME of theChurch, "THE CHURCH OF GOD"!

There were tben, just as there aretoday, many local congregatIons of thatone True Church, which is a spiritualorganism.

The Apostle Paul said, "We have nosuch custom, neither the Churches ofGodl! (I Cor. 11 :16), showing manylocal congregations! When the ApostlePaul addressed anyone of these localcongregations, he included its geographical location-just as you, whenreceiving a personal letter, read not onlyyour NAME on the address, but alsoyour street or box number or ruralroute.

Paul had addressed this letter to"The CHURCH OF GOD [which isthe true NAME of the Church] whichis at Corinth" (I Cor. 1:2).

Notice a few more examples."Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by

the will of God, and Timothy ourbrother, unto the Church of God whichis at Corinth, with all the saints whichare in all Achaia" (II Cor. 1: 1). "Forye have heard of my conversation intime past in the Jews' religion, how thatbeyond measure I persecuted the Churchof God, and wasted it" (Ga 1 1: 1 3)"For I am the least of the apostles, thatam not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the Church ofGodl! (I Cor. 15 :9). "For ye, brethren, became followers of the Churches of

September, 1963

God which IN JUDAEA are in ChristJesus ..." (I Thess. 2:14). "For if aman know not how to rule his ownhouse, how shall he take care of theChurch of God?1! (I Tim. 3: 5). "Butif I tarry long, that thou mayest knowhow thou oughtest to behave thyself inthe house of God, which is the Churchof the Living God, the pillar andground of the truth ., (I Tim.3: 15). In this example, the ApostlePaul adds the descriptive word "Living,"just as he went on to describe theChurch as the "pillar and ground ofthe truth."

00 you see, brethren? The ApostlePaul also addressed the "Church of theThessalonians in God our Father andthe Lord Jesus Christ ., (IT Thess.1: 1), and "the Churches of Galatia. . ." but did not intend these to bedesignated as the one NAME of theTrue Church of God to continue downthrough the ages!

Why "RADIO" Church of God?

Some few of the worldly churchesunderstand a minor doctrinal point ortwo. Some FEW of the worldlychurches have discovered this doctrinalpoint of truth about the true name forthe Church! They have adopted thisname, and call themselves "The Churchof God." But a name is to conveyMEANING! And if these various"Churches of God" of thir world arenot recognizing God as their RULER,are not completely SUBJECT to Him,are not OBEYING Him, do not keepHis weekly Sabbath, the annual Sabbaths, and do not have ANY of theseother seven major proofs-then, eventhough possessing the NAME authorized in Scripture, they are NOT theTrue CHURCH OF GOD!

Because of a number of organizationsof men laying claim to the NAME ofthe True Church, just as MILLIONSof "professing" Christians have laidclaim to the NAME of Jesus Christmy father, when wanting to incorporatethe fledgling beginning of the Philadelphia era of the True Church of God,for the purpose of conducting theBUSINESS of God on this earth, was

T H ESE PAST FEW WEEKS havebeen jam-packed! Mr. GarnerTed Armstrong, along with

others on the acceptance committee, completed reviewiug almost FOURHUNDRED applications for enrollment to Ambassador College this fall.Dilly SEVENTY-FIVE could be aumitted.

Can you imagine how difficult it isto select only a small percentage ofstudents who earnestly desire to attendGod's Own College? Many whom wewould all want to see in college mustbe turned down simply because thereis not enough room, or because presentcircumstances do not allow it.

Finally, however, as I write this article the final letters are being mailedout notifying the students whether ornot they have been accepted. You

should all earnestly pray these studentswill really APPRECIATE the privilegeit is to attend Ambassador College.Pray they will be the ones GOD ISCALLING to serve in His Work!

Pray also that God will make it possible to have the proposed THIRDAMBASSADOR COLLEGE near BigSandy, Texas. Plans are now being laidfor the NEW COLLEGE to open nextfall-just one year from now!

Mr. Leroy Neff, a faculty memberand ordained minister, has just leftPasadena to be acting Business Man

ager of all our facilities in Big Sandy. When the college opens next fall, Mr.Neff will be on the faculty and willalso be the Registrar of the collegethere.

You will all be overjoyed to hearhow God has intervened for Mr. andMrs. Neff. Many of you know Mrs.Neff had been suffering from a severeheart condition for over a year. She

had spent the past nine months or morein bed-not even having the strengthto get up. All the ministers and brethren in Southern California had beenpraying for Mrs. Neff's recovery. Manyof you had earnestly asked God toheal her.

GOD ANSWERED OUR PRAYERS!Two or three weeks ago Mrs. Neff

began feeling better. It was recommended she have a thorollgh physicalexaminatton, Having been in bed many

months made it difficult to get up totravel, but she was able to make it.The doctor then gave her a completecheck-lip. He had her run up a levelof stairs TWENTY-ONE times. The

result of his examination was that Mrs.Neff had ABSOLUTELY NO SIGNOR TRACE OF HEART TROUBLE!The doctor (who had never seen herbefore) said, "This lady never has hadheart trouble!" And he was one of thebest heart specialists in Los Angeles.Of course, we know she had a verycritical and severe condition. But Godso completely HEALED her that theheart specialist couldn't find a trace thatshe had ever had it.

Mr. Armstrong Returns

In addition to the new students, Mrs.Neff's healing, and more solid plansfor the new college in Texas, Mr. andMrs. Herbert W. Armstrong docked inNew York after nearly four monthsat the college in Bricket Wood. Alsoreturning to the United States afterthree years there are Mr. and Mrs. BenChapman. Mrs. Chapman, as most ofyou know, was Mr. Dick Armstrong'swife. Three years after Mr. Dick Armstrong's death in 1958, Lois, as we allknow her, married Mr. Ben Chapman-an Ambassador College graduate andnow an ordained minister. Their fiveyear-old son, little "Dickie" Armstrong, along with his new baby sister, CarolynChapman, are anxiouslv awaited by allwho know the Chapmans.

Mr. and Mrs. Chapman will spenda short time visiting with their friendsand relatives and will then establishtheir home on Lake Lorna next to theNeffs. Mr. Chapman will be on thecollege faculty and will direct the Radio

Studio which is due to be constructedin the very near flltllre.

Right now, Mr. and Mrs. Armstrongare on the train expecting to arrivein Pasadena tomorrow at eight o'clockin the morning. Of course, by the timeyou read this issue of The GOODNEWS, they will have been here abouttwo weeks.

There will be many things to preparebefore the college year starts, September1. There will be many conferenceswhere top-level decisions will be made.We certainly ask all of you to pray forMr. Armstrong and all of God's ministers to have wisdom in making thedecisions which will affect the lives ofall of God's people.

Baptizing Tours

In addition to everything mentionedabove, this week was also the finalweek of the summer baptizing tours. It seems this one week alone had asmany significant events as one mightthink could happen in several months. Two of the tours have returned toPasadena, the other is finished, butstill on the highway driving since thetour ended on the East Coast in NovaScotia.

Here are some comments and thestatistics from the men on tour:

Mr. Dave Albert, tour leader, andMr. Walter Sharp were travelingthrough the Central United States andway up into Canada. Mr. Albert reports: "Just as would be expected, thefinal percentages are almost exactlyfifty per cent of the total number ofpersons originally scheduled. We had401 letters of people whom we hopedto meet this summer; 376 of thosepeople actually showed up to meet usand were counseled for baptism. Andwe baptized 201! Next year-we pray-many of those who were not baptizedwill be ready for this very importantstep.

"We know that this tour was as successful as it was as a result of thePRAYERS of God's people. Withoutthose prayers there probably would havebeen fewer baptized. And we know thatas a result of those same prayers, Godgllided, protected, and blessed this tour,We had no serious car trouble or acci-

The GOOD NEWS

dents in over 18,500 miles. And weremained in very good health duringthe eleven weeks we were on the road.Again we give you all our sincere andheart-felt thanks for your support of thebaptizing tours!"

Mr. Frank McCrady, tour leader, and Mr. Paul Flatt, who will be ourStudent Body President this next year, met all of those who had written infrom the Southern United States. Hereare the final results and commentsfrom this tour: "We were out on thetour for nearly ten weeks, traveling atotal of 12,500 miles. We scheduled453 to meet us-but only 322 met.And out of these only 130 were baptized. Many of these people did notseem to really have the zeal to stepout and meet us-and many were notbaptized because they were not totaUywilling to GIVE UP their own lives. However, we earnestly pray that manyof these people will be ready for thenext year.

"Though we went through the South,we had no problems because of theRACE SITUATION. We could certainly feel the heat of it, though. Goddid really bless us on this tour and incidents which could have turned outto be big problems seemed to smoothout-we are confident God interveneddaily."

The third tour led by Mr. SherwinMcMichael, accompanied by Mr. RoyPage, an exchange student from the college in England, reports this: "We havenow completed the visiting portion ofour tour. ALL that remains now is the4000 mile trip from the tip of Maineto Los Angeles. However Roy (RoyPage from England, and this next year'sStudent Body Vice President) was ableto see a great deal of the United States. He commented how different it wasfrom his native England.

"This last week of the tour has notbeen as fruitful as some others. Thishas been the pattern throughout allNew England and Canada. This is partially due to the lack of regularly hearing the broadcast-and also to the unwillingness to change once they heardit. People in this older, more stable environment of New England just don'tchange until they are made to. But

September, 1963

God has changed many, for which weare very thankful.

"Our whole tour in all includedscheduling 359 to meet us. Out of those271 actually did meet and keep theappointments-we baptized 106, but asmentioned, many were just not willingto change and repent.

"The tour has been most profitableand enjoyable for us as God allowedus to serve Him this summer!"

Messrs. Meredith and HillNear Completion of World Tour

As most of you readers of TheGOOD NEWS know, Mr. Roderick C.Meredith and Mr. David Jon Hill havebeen on a very important fact-findingtour of the Middle and Far East. However, because of their plane scheduleand the opportunities they had fortravel this summer their trip took themfrom Los Angeles to New York, thento Europe, and down to the MiddleEast. From there, they went on throughIndia and Pakistan over to the Philippines and down to Australia beforecoming back to the United Statescompletely circling the globe. BothMrs. Meredith, Margie, and Mrs. Hill,Audrey, are very anxiously awaiting thereturn of their husbands. Both have thewonderful privilege and opportunity offlying to Honolulu where they will meetMr. Meredith and Mr. Hill as theycomplete the tour. A dozen people havewritten in from the Hawaiian Islandsrequesting baptism. These people willbe met and counseled at this time allowing the Hills and Merediths to returnto Pasadena for the start of the collegehere.

Here are some interesting excerptsfrom a personal letter written by Mr.Meredith:

"Seeing this land of Israel is certainlyan inspiration after spending time inthe slow-moving Arab nations allaround it. The Jewish people are reallyon the ball! There is building going oneverywhere. More building than in anyland we have ever seen, comparativelyspeaking. And there is a sense of dedication and confidence here that is certainly lacking in the Arab countries.

"The experience of seeing these

Biblical lands, meeting the people andsoaking up the general atmosphereall of this has made both of us feelcloser to many events and personalitiesin the Bible, and inspired us to dig inas never before to really understand theknowledge of many points which arestill vague.

"Seeing Petra was certainly fascinating, and neither of us had realized howBIG the place really is. Somehow, others haven't seemed to have made thatclear. We hiked all around, and thereare multiple tbonsands of caves allready to be cleaned out and used! Aninteresting fact is that they are alreadycleaning out and fixing up many ofthese caves for tourist rooms. And theynow have a rustic lodge or hotel rightin the canyon, where we stayed, withroom for 20 or more adults, and arenow arranging additional facilities.

"So we may not all sleep in cavesafter all, especially those who are olderor have some type of health problem.

"After arriving here in Tel Aviv,we got in touch with Herman Hoeh, and he carne down Friday evening andspent the entire Sabbath and this morning (Sunday) with us. Needless to say,we had a most enjoyable and profitablevisit and discussed many things we hadjust seen and observed.

"We are all learning much fromthese experiences, and they shoulddefinitely payoff for years to come. Weare leaving in a short time for Loci airport to fly to Teheran this evening. We are looking forward to it althougheveryone has told us that the "rough"part of our trip still lies ahead. Wethink of all of you daily, and pray forGod's blessing on His Work there inPasadena, and His inspiration in thebroadcasting especially. Please give ourlove to all the brethren and tell themto remember us."

Dr. Hoeh's Studies in Israel

Another one of God's leading ministers-Dr. Herman L. Hoeh, Dean ofAmbassador College, has spent the summer studying at the Hebrew UnionCollege in Israel. As you read in ThePLAIN TRUTH magazine, Dr. Hoehassisted with the excavation of theancient Biblical city of Ashdod. Here

are some interesting experiences Dr.Hoeh had this summer:

"July 1, I flew to Israel to JOIn agroup of men from the U.S.A. selectedby the Hebrew Union College to participate in a study of archaeology rnIsrael and in a general education aboutmodern Israel.

"This included actual participation ina 'dig' at Ashdod conducted for archaeological purposes. The diggingbegan July 15.

"Before the excavations began twoof the Ambassador College studentscame down from Bricket Wood- - JohnCheetam and Dennis Pebworth. Theywere privileged to tour the Holy Land

during the summer break of classes."Dr. Dothan of Israel was in charge

of the 'diggings.' They have hired alot of immigrants from North Africato work here. Many of them are quitelazy and unindustrious. A very few arereally good workers. We outwork thevast majority. We begin at 8 and gotill 12: 50; begin again at 1 and go till4:30. There is a little breeze most ofthe time and fairly cool much of theday-but it is certainly HOT in thepits. It is very hard work because thereis no shade in the pits except duringthe evenings.

"One evening after our workinghours, one of the supervisors found an

10

inscription of Sargon's capture of Ashdod mentioned in the Bible. Whichgoes to show that archaeology has littleto contribute in value beyond wha.tcould have been known from the Bible.Only in a few instances has it givenanything beyond mere confirmation!

"One realizes how much is art andguessing in archaeology, not science, when on the spot.

"On July 25, we return to Jerusalemwhere lectures and other educationalactivities continue till August 23. I hopeto return to Pasadena about August 25

after 10 weeks travel and study in England and Israel."

Certainly these experiences Dr. Hoehhas had will be of benefit and valueto the colleges and Church of God.True knowledge based upon God'sWord-THE BIBLE-has been revealedto those whom God has called to proclaim His Truth!

The New College Year Begins

By the time you receive this issueof The GOOD NEWS school will bein session. Many of you will havefriends and relatives who will be attending Ambassador College this fall. Many of the young students will beout of local churches. They will all needyour prayers to complete the job thatGod has in store for them. Certainly, they all would like you to pray forthem often.

Those of us on the faculty know andrealize what a tremendous opportunityit is to be accepted for AmbassadorCollege. Some of you reading this magazine will be among those who wereturned down and will not be able toattend college this year. You shouldcontinue to grow and study and prayso that you can be used effectively inthe local area where you now are andperhaps be accepted next year or servein any capacity which will prove fruitful and productive for your own individual lives.

Where God's Ministers Are

We have carefully prepared for allthe brethren of God's Church a mapwhich has been included in this issueof the magazine. We did not staplethis in-we intend for you to use it!Be sure that you do not lay it aside ormisplace it. It will be very valuablefor you to help you be MORE EFFECTIVE in your prayer life! You cantake this map and list of ministers intoyour private prayer room every singleday. The Bible continually admonishesall of us to pray for God's ministers! This will help you fulfill this part ofyour prayer time and should certainlyencourage all of you to become moreacquainted with each one of God's ministers in a more personal way!

On this map you will see we havemarked off individual church areas.

Around each city is a circle shaded indark gray with a radius of 100 miles.Nearly every baptized member wholives within the shaded area on thismap is able to attend a local church. You can readily see God has providedmany churches for His true and converted people. However, there are manyareas-as is plainly indicated-whereno local church is available in hundreds

of miles! On my office wall right nowis a map which has been prepared togive those of us here at Headquartersa perspective of where all of the baptized members are. There are literally

scores of areas where we could startlocal congregations of more than onehundred people IF WE ONiY HADTHE MINISTERS!

All of you brethren in areas whereyou cannot attend a church certainlyare praying-we know-that God willprovide the qualified men who cansoon come to your area to raise upchurch congregations. Every year thatgoes by more churches are started! Youhave read about them in past issues ofThe GOOD NEWS magazine. Withinthe next few months, undoubtedly,

September, 1963

more churches will be started. We askyou all to pray fervently-but be patient-that God will provide churchesfor many of the scattered brethren!

This very day as we go to pressfoundations are being laid for two newchurch areas-Odessa and Amarillo,Texas is one; Minneapolis, Minnesotaand Sioux Falls, South Dakota is theother. Read more of this in the nextissue after Mr. Meredith returns.

On this map you will also noticeareas where we have placed a slar. These areas are where we have regularlyestablished Bible studies which meetonce or twice a month. Although theseBible studies are not full church services, brethren from around these areascan gather once in awhile to counselwith God's ministers and to hear HisWord expounded.

On the back of the map we have prepared a list of where all of God's ministers are. After each name, we havegiven you the responsibilities or localchurches where these men are serving. The numbers in parentheses representthe number of people in the congregations. Notice carefully how manychurches we have now reaching 200,

300, 400 and even up to 500 or morein church every single Sabbath Day.The growth in all of the churches isvery inspiring and encouraging to allof us-as we know it is to all of you.

Once again, this has truly been afruitful and eventful summer. God'sHeadquarters, as always, has been abeehive of activity! As students beginto arrive for the coming college yearevery day on our campus now, we allanxiously await the start of this schoolyear and the soon-coming Feast ofTabernacles where we will be able tosee all of you brethren gathered together in the three Festival locationswhich God has provided.

Mr. Meredith should return verysoon and he will be once again writingthe regular column of Church news inforthcoming issues of this magazine.Once again, brethren, be sure you arcpraying for all of God's ministers andone another to unite God's Church together in a bond of love that will provethat we truly are God's people andGod's True Church!

How You MUST Teach YourChildren to

BEHAVE IN CHURCHEvery member of God's Church, around the world, should read

every word of this letter.

by Richard D. Armstrong

EDITOR'S NOTE: Mrs. Armstrong has just runacross a copy of a letter written by our son, RichardD. Armstrong, four and a half months before hedied from an automobile accident.

He was then pastor of the Fresno, California,Church of God. Destruction resulting from lack oftraining and supervision of children had occurredat the hall where the Church met. One more infraction would have put the Church out of the hall.

Such a thing as this could happen at any Church. It was corrected promptly at Fresno, and brings noreproach upon that Church now-but it shouldsound a loud and emphatic WARNING to the members of all other churches that such an incident isnever allowed to be repeated elsewhere.

As I re-read this letter, the realization cameforceably upon my mind that many of our brethren-especially those newer in God's Church- may notfully realize the SERIOUSNESS of strict training, and vigilant enforcement of the behavior of childrenat church services.

Brethren, we need to be RE-AWAKENED!We need to realize the extreme seriousness of

this matter. GOD IS HOLDING EVERY ONE OFYOU PARENTS RESPONSIBLE!

Our son Dick, as we called him, loved the brethren at Fresno. Previously he had been pastor of thethree churches at Houston, San Antonio, and Corpus Christi. He had told us with feeling how, al-

though he was younger in physical years than manymembers, they seemed like his own spiritual children-and he loved them as a parent loves a child.

At Fresno it was the same. Possibly Richard D.Armstrong was the most loved minister in theChurch of God-because he, himself, felt such deeplove and concern for Christ's flock, over which hewas a shepherd.

I was moved as I read this letter again, after 51/ 2years. I do not think my son really wrote it, exceptas God's instrument. The living CHRIST, I feel, actually authored it.

But it contains a dynamic SERMON on the responsibility of parents for the training and the behavior of their children at church services. As thebrethren at Fresno were his spiritual children, andGod held him RESPONSIBLE for their behaviorin controlling their children, this letter is also anexample of how to deal with children. My son patiently made the Truth PLAIN to them-explainedthoroughly. But he also TOOK ACTION! He tooksuch action as to prevent a recurrence of the mischief. I want every minister of Christ, in all thechurches, to take the same action, that parents mayFEAR to neglect the discipline of their children, lest they be publicly and severely rebuked and heldto account before all.

I want every member to read every word.

- Herbert W. Armstrong

March 12, 1958

T o THE BRETHREN of theFresno Church of God, fromyour pastor, Richard D. Arm

strong.

Last Sabbath it was very nice to have

Mr. Herbert W. Armstrong to speakto us, and the Ambassador Chorale.A pleasure which we do not often have,

which I am glad we were able to enjoy.I was also very happy to see so manythere, especially of you brethren fromup North and over in the West, andscattered abroad who are only able tocome to the Fresno Church once in awhile.

There were over 115 adults, notcounting small children and those fromPasadena - including myself and the

entire Ambassador Chorale. Whichmeant, of course, that outside of theevangelistic campaigns held a year anda half ago in this same room, this wasthe largest group that we have everhad attending the Fresno Church.

I enjoyed the meetings last weekimmensely and I am sure all of youdid, but I received some very sad newsjust as I was leaving Church last week.

12

Mr. Kelly, the janitor who sets up thechairs for our meeting and throughwhom we rent the hall, came to mevisibly shaken and very nervous, buthe had a very great problem he hadto tell me about. Mr. Kelly has alwaysbeen most courteous and friendly toall of us. He said that he hated to tellme, but our children had torn apartone of the toilets on the third floorwhere we hold our meetings. They hadtorn the float clear out of the toilet;taken all of the paper from several ofthe toilets and poked it into one andtried to flush this toilet and flooded itall over the floor. He said that theyhad left it in a complete, total, disgraceful mess, and that furthermore, several of our children had gone downto the second floor and gone into ameeting. The lodge members who ownthe building were complaining andasking Mr. Kelly to make sure that itdidn't happen again, or we will bethrown out.

We shall not be allowed to meethere any longer IF THIS EVER HAPPENS AGAIN.'

The Church of God Almighty, thevery Body of Jesus Christ, must notsuffer such a humiliating thing becausewe are not obedient to God's commandments. We shall not allow such acondition to continue. I hope you canimagine how I felt after the joy ofhaving the Chorale and such a wonderful meeting, and then to have a blowsuch as this. I hate to have to give ananswer for the Church, and I feel thatI should go to those who are responsible, you, the parents. We don't knowwhich child was responsible, but we doknow this, that of those who come toFresno regularly, Sabbath after Sabbath,we have not had this problem. It isonly when things do come up. Now thatdoesn't mean that any particular children or those who do only come oncein a while are especially to blame. Itdoes happen when we have a largegroup of children coming together andthey are left nn restrained to play abouton their own after Church.

God says in Hebrews 13: 17, "Obeythem that have the rule over you, andsubmit yourselves: for they watch foryour souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and

The GOOD NEWS

not with grief: for that is unprofitablefor you." Brethren, I have to give anaccount to God when something likethis happens and it is up to me to seeto it that it doesn't happen again. Goright on in your Bible and read throughthe first chapter of James. We are having our trials of faith which we shouldcount all joy, because it works out patience and builds stronger character inus. We do have these problems-theymust be solved, and they must be solvedby the Scriptures-Gad's way. In Verse13 of this first chapter of James, Godsays, "Let no man say when he istempted, I am tempted of God: forGod cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man." We aretempted of our own lusts, and even sois a child and if there is no parentalcontrol any child, and every child, doesget into mischief.

I want to make this clear. There isno child that is specifically at fault, butall the children without exception havebeen too noisy, have been left to runfree to themselves after the services areover, and this must cease. God says inHebrews 12: 14, .. Follow peace with allmen, and holiness, without which noman shall see the Lord: Looking diligenlly lest any man fail of the graceof God; lest any root of bitternessspringing up trouble you, and therebyMANY be defiled." It is up lo us La

settle this particular problem accordingto God's will and from the Scriptures, and not let any root of bitterness springup in us.

Notice James 1 :22-25, "But be yedoers of the word, and not hearersonly, deceiving your own selves." It isnot taking you into the Kingdom ofHeaven if you simply agree with everything that God's Church teaches concerning such doctrines as heaven andhell, the Holy Days, paying of tithes, and training your children if you donot do these things. You have to liveit.

You may be very familiar with God'slaws, but if you don't obey them, youwill go into the Lake of Fire for theknowledge that you do have. You mayagree on every doctrine that is preachedin the Bible, but if you don't live byit you will be burned as so much refusein hell, and your children with you.

September, 1963

For instance, suppose that yuu knowall about health foods. You study them, and you know all about vitamins; youknow all about how to get pure, unspoiled and undefiled foods, so youknow how to feed your child, but ifyour child doesn't know how to obeyyou may be just feeding him in theright manner and giving him a healthybody that will make him burn ali thebetter, when God has to destroy himbecause he has built the wrong kindof character. You would be far betteroff with poor health, but a right heartand character in the eyes of God, thanto be a perfectly healthy, physical human being and not living by every wordof God.

Many of you have felt that perhapsit would be better to leave your childrenat home, but the Bible COMMANDSyou to bring them into the services andit commands them to BE QUIET! Let'sread the Word of God. In Exodus 20

are the Ten Commandments, "And Godspake all these words, saying, I am theLord thy God, which have brought theeout of the land of Egypt, out of thehouse of bondage. Thou shalt have noother gods before me. Thou shalt notmake unto thee any graven image, orany likeness of any thing that is inheaven above, or that is in the earthbeneath, or that is in the water underthe earth: Thou shalt not bow downthyself to them, nor serve them: forI the Lord thy God am a jealous God,visiting the iniquity of the fathers uponthe children unto the third and fourthgeneration of them that hate me; Andshewing mercy unto thousands of themthat love me, and keep my commandments. Thou shalt not take the nameof the Lord thy God in vain; for theLord will not hold him guiltless thattaketh his name in vain." Now noticethe commandment about the Sabbath."Remember the sabbath day, to keepit HOLY" God made it holy; we keepit that way. "Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventhday is the sabbath of the Lord thyGod." Now notice how you are to keepthe Sabbath: "In it thou shalt not doany work, thou, NOR THY SON,NOR THY DAUGHTER. thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy

Seven Principles Revealing-

HOW TO MAKEWISE DECISIONS!

Success and happiness in life - EVEN finally achieving theKINGDOM OF GOD depends on making RIGHT DECISIONS. Here from the Business Manager-an ordained Evangelist in God's Church, are SEVEN RULES which will help YOU

make the right decisions - EVERY TIME!

by Albert J. Portune

H ow OFTEN do we find ourselves in trouble because wehave made a wrong decision?

Why is it at times we launch intosome endeavor-begin a project-enterinto a business arrangement-decide tomake a major move or make a longterm purchase-then find that thingsturn out WRONG?

Many of God's people have had thesad experience of discovering they havemade an nnioise decision. There is away to avoid this pitfall! God hasmade available certain principles which,if diligently applied, will always result in the RIGHT CHOICE. Yet manydo not know these principles. Most ofus fail to apply them ALL. Many aretoo IMPATIENT to take time to applythem.

Right Choices-the WholePurpose of Human Life

God has shown from the beginningthat it is up to us to CHOOSE. Ourvery lives and ultimate eternal lifedepends on making the RIGHTCHOICE!

Notice God's deadly and seriouswarning in Deuteronomy 30:19. "I callheaven and earth to record this dayagainst yOll, that I have set before youLIFE and DEATH, BLESSING andCURSING: therefore CHOOSE LIFE,that both thou and thy seed may live"

God wants us to make the rightchoices. He wants us to learn how tomake right evaluations and come to theright decisions. Every decision we makein life is either a RIGHT ONE which

leads toward life, happiness and p1'OSperity, or it is a WRONG ONE andleads toward unhappiness, destitutionand death.

Man's Basic Ability to MakeDecisions

Our primary KEY we must learn before we learn the SEVEN rules to making wise decisions is what NATIVEability man has for coming to right conclusions.

Whenever we have a decision tomake, the first step we take is usuallythe most disastrous! That mistake isassuming that we-OF OURSELVEShave the ability to come to a right conclusion. Yet, the Word of God clearlyshows us that the basic equipment manhas been given to make decisions isequipment that will irrevocably leadhim to make the WRONG CHOICE.

The basic nature that all mankindhas inherited-believe it or not-willinexorably lead him to make theWRONG DECISION.

Notice Jeremiah 10:23: "0 Lord, Iknow that the way of man is NOT INHIMSELF: it is NOT in man thatwalketh to DIRECT HIS STEPS."

If we could only learn this primarylesson we would be over the greatesthurdle in directing our lives to successful conclusions. Yet, contrary to God'sdirection in His Word, we too oftenlean to our own understanding andmisguided ability to make decisions instead of looking to God! (Prov. 3:5).

Whatever decision or choice we haveto make in life, IF we can only realize

that the basic nature we have will ALWAYS tend to lead us to make theWRONG DECISION, we will be ableto take the first step in avoiding disaster. Almighty God is careful to tellus in Proverbs 14: 12 and 16 :25:"There is a way that SEEMETH rightunto a man, but the end therf'of are theways of death."

Rule One-Ask Godfor Wisdom

This brings us to the first rule inmaking wise decisions. If we are toreach a right choice we must go to asource OUTSIDE of ourselues for theanswer!

The Word of God tells us "... forthe Lord is a God of knowledge, andby HIM actions are weighed" (I Sam.2:3) .

God is the source of ALL knowledge! He alone can guide us to makethe right choice. Whenever we have adecision or choice to make, the firstthing we must do is GO TO GOD inPRAYER and acknowledge that Healone can direct us to make the wisechoice. Ask Him [or the WISDOM tosee what is right. Ask Him for guidance in your pursuit of the right course.

Too many of us leave God out ofour decisions. Too many of us plungeahead seeking advice from other sourcesand gathering facts BEFORE we acknowledge God as the primary sourceof right direction. Seeking God's wisdom and direction is FIRST, then wecan follow the next six rules successfully.

14

God tells us three times III HisWord: "The fear of the Lord is thebeginning of wisdom" (Ps. 111: 10;Provo 1:7; 9:10). When we come tothe place where we fear to go aheadwithout FIRST going to God, then wewill stop making wrong choices.

Solomon an Example

When Solomon became King ofIsrael after his father David, he knewhe was faced with many momentousdecisions. The responsibility of rulinga mighty nation and making all thedecisions that are part of being a monarch weighed heavily upon him.

What was the first thing Solomondid? His actions are an EXAMPLEfor us-recorded in the Word of God."And Solomon said unto God, Thouhast shewed great mercy unto Davidmy father, and hast made me to reignin his stead . . . for thou hast mademe king over a people like the dns!of the earth ill multittcde. Give menow WISDOM and KNOWLEDGE,that I may go out and come in beforethis people: for who can JUDGE [decide for] this thy people, that is soGREAT?" (II Chron.l :8-10). BecauseSolomon sought God FIRST and acknowledged Him as the source ofRIGHT DIRECTION, God grantedhim wisdom and knowledge to makeright decisions and choices. Godblessed him and the nation Israel overwhich he ruled (Verses 11-17).

No matter how large or small a decision we have to make, we should al!l'aF go to God FIRST and acknowledge Him as the source of direction, wisdom and knowledge to make theright choice.

Even if we must make a quickrapid-fire-decision, we always havetime-even if for only an instant-topray within ourselves, "Father, help meto see )'0111' tl'i/l."

Rule Two-Search God's Wordfor Examples

After FIRST acknowledging Godand asking Him for wisdom and guidance, we must next realize that Godhas recorded for us IN HIS WORD

The GOOD NEWS

literally hundreds of examples of rightand wrong choices and their results inpeople's lives.

In the Old Testament, when Godwas bringing Israel out of Egypt, thepeople had to make many decisions;some were right-many were wrong! These examples are priceless in helpingus avoid making similar mistakes in decisions we must reach.

Some of the wrong decisions whichled to disaster for the people are recorded a second time in I Corinthiansin the 10th chapter. Notice what theApostle Paul says about these occurrences: "Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: andthey are written for OUR ADMONITION, upon whom the ends of theworld are come" (Verse 11).

By a deep knowledge of God's Word-through constant study and meditation-we have a backlog of experience

to draw upon. We certainly can profitby the mistakes others have made, andalso from their wise decisions.

Jesus' Example

Jesus, under severe temptation fromSatan to make a wrong decision, knewthis principle well. When the Temptersought to entice Jesus to choose immediate world rule-showed him luringworld kingdoms to tempt Him-Jesussaid: "IT IS WRITTEN, Man shaJl notlive by bread alone, but by EVERYWORD that proceedeth out of themouth of God" (Matt. 4:4). Jesus alsosaid twice more "IT IS WRITTEN!"

Jesus knew God's Word. He drewheavily upon it to make His choices. We shonld follow HiJ example!

The unjust judges of this world follow this principle even if their choicesmay be wrong. No judge presiding overa court case ever comes to a decisionwithout knowing the decisions thathave been rendered previously in similar cases. Lawyers always rehearse previous court cases for what has happenedin the past.

We have literally hundreds of"court cases" upon which God hasrendered HIS verdict-IN THE BIBLE.Yet far too many of us neglect to seekthat knowledge from God's Word andapply it to our decisions. Far too many

September, 1963

of us just do not know God's Wordwell enough! Therefore we makewrong decisions on points for whichthere are direct exam pl es in the Wordof God.

Rule Three-Get the Facts

The third rule for making wise decisions is one many of us NEGLECTbecause we are in too mxh of a hurryto come to a decision- we are IMPATIENT.

Each decision we have to make willusually have mallY factors to consider.Having only a portion of the information available may cause us to decideprematurely and WRONGLY.

One of the high-pressure selling"gimmicks" or procedures today is tooverwhelm a prospective buyer with alot of "loaded" or one-sided truths andhalf-truths. These "facts" seem to showconclnsioely that to buy is the "rightchoice." But often to the buyer's chagrin he will only discover too late thatthere was another side to the storv!

Had he CAREFULLY CONSIDERED,he would never have made the purchase.

Whatever decision or choice wehave to make, in whatever time isavailable to us, we should ferret outand weigh every possibility and contingency so we can see every facetevery angle of the choices available tous and what the results and effectsmight be. NEVER BE HURRIED ORPUSHED INTO A DECISION!

A good course of action to follow isto sit down and make a list of all thepros and cons on a sheet of paper.Forcing yourself to take the time to dothis will cause you to see things youwould not have considered before. Listobjectively all the facts you have athand, then ask yourself questions forwhich you do not have the facts-thenGET THOSE FACTS before you decide.

One key which will save you manyheadaches and pocketbook pains islearn to "wait 24 hours"-especially inreference to impulse buying. Everysalesman knows a person is most aptto buy on the spur of the moment afterhe has been pushed "off balance" byhis basic desire to possess plus the

September, 1963

~lruIlg "pitch" he has just been given. But if you will say, "I'll think it over"-leave the store-go home and waituntil tomorrow-most likely many factors will come to you which you wereunable to consider under the pressureof the moment.

This key also applies to any choiceyou have to make. We are always "offbalance" until we have caret ullyweighed ALL the facts.

Rule Four-Seek Wise andAbundant Counsel

In getting the facts, we should notalways lean to our own knowledge ofthe subject. We should seek those whohave the most accurate informationrelative to our choice.

Let us suppose you are consideringa change from one area of the countryto another. This involves a change ofjob - change of home - change ofschool for children-change of climate-change of cost of living-and many, many other things. A wise decisioncannot be reached without learningwhat these factors are like in the newarea. One way to learn these facts isto ask or counsel someone who is anAUTHORITY on these factors in thenew area.

In every case seek wise counsel froma reputable cllIthol'ity or sources you canrely 011. Don't rely on backyard adviceor U water-cooler wisdom" for a decision in your life.

Don't be satisfied with one opmlOl1

only! A primary principle from God'sWord shows us to seek wise counsel:"WHERE NO COUNSEL is, the people fall: but in the MULTITUDE OFCOUNSELLERS THERE IS SAFETY"(Prov. 11:14).

Seek Ministerial Counsel

After we have gleaned all the factsavailable from our own research andfrom wise and abundant authorities, weshould seek additional counsel fromGod's ministers or elders if available.

God has placed His ministry in HisChurch to guide and help His peopleto the most important choice of allto choose life! God's ministers are wise

The GOOD NEWS

counsellors to help you reach a wise decision. Seek their counsel before coming to a final decision.

In Ephesians 4 God shows us thepurpose for which He has placed aministry in His Church: "And he gavesome, apostles; and some, prophets;and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfectingof the saints, for the 'work of the ministry, for the edifying of the BODY ofChrist" (Verses 11 and 12).

Certainly God's ministers can givewise counsel and guide you to make theright choice. Make available to themall the facts and circumstances youhave gleaned. They may see thingsfrom a point of view you had not considered.

Paul shows us that ministerial counsel is to be sought and followed: "Obeythem that have the rule over you, andsubmit yourselves: for they watch foryour souls [lives - psucbe in theGreek], as they that must give accolint" (Heb. 13: 17).

Rule Five-Make a DefiniteDecision

In applying the preceding rules, wewill have come to the place where weare ready to make a definite decision. Now is the time!

We have asked God for wisdom anddirection; we have searched His Wordfor examples and lessons; we havegathered and weighed all the facts andeventualities; we have sought authorities, wise and abundant counsellors andministerial guidance. The choice or decision should now be CLEAR.

Make that decision DECISIVELYPOSITIVELY!

Don't vacillate! Don't waver!

Again God's Word gives us the example. "For he that wavereth is likea wave of the sea driven with the windand tossed ... A double minded manis UNSTABLE in all his ways" (Jas.1 :6, 8).

This brings us to the sixth rule.

Rule Six-Have Faith inYour Decision

Faith is one of the most powerful

forces we can employ to cause circum-

15

stances to turn out right. Once we havecome to a decision based on God'sprinciples we can have FAITH it willwork out correctly.

We should EXPECT our choiceto turn out RIGHT and GOOD. Wecan have ABSOLUTE FAITH that itwill !

"Faith is the substance of things (orconclusions) HOPED FOR, the evidence of things not seen" (Heb. 11: 1).

Believing is now our part! The wholeeleventh chapter of Hebrews is a testimony of those who made choices anddecisions in their lives toward an ultimate goal and they attained themTHROUGH FAITH!

Jesus said, "If thou canst belie lie,ALL THINGS are possible to him thatBELIEVETH!" (Mark 9 :23).

Trust your decision. Trust the. Godwho led you to it. Believe in it andHAVE FAITH!

Rule Seven-Follow Counseland Work Diligently for

the Desired End

The last rule is where many falldown. The right conclusion to a deCISIon is NOT AUTOMATIC! Wemust go all out to bring the desiredend to reality.

In the course of obtaining all thefacts and getting wise and abundantcounsel we will have discovered manythings to DO!

Now that we have made our choiceand have faith that it will work out,we need to "roll tip 0111' sleeves" and"GET TO WORK"!

Another basic principle from God'sWord will help. Wise Solomon learnedfrom God: "Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, DO IT WITH THYMIGHT" (Bccl. 9:10).

Here is where many of us fail. Wedo not diligently and systematically gostep-by-step through every phase of effort toward the desired goal!

Resolve, in every choice or decision,to thoroughly and judiciously DOYOUR PART.

Don't Forget Your Counsellors

So many times we seek wise counselfrom authorities and then ministers-

16

we learn the right course of actionand then we proceed to forget thatcounsel and do things differently-according to our own reasoning.

Remember the advice given and follow it accurately-write it down if necessary.

We CAN make wise decisions, brethren! God wants us to. He hasgiven us the means to direct our livesto a wonderful and eternal rewardthrough wise choices.

There is never a time in YOURLIFE when you can afford to NEGLECT these principles.

Write them down on a card andcarry them with YOIl. Learn themmake them a part of you. Put them intopractice in YOUR life.

God promises: "And it shall cometo pass, if thou shalt hearken DILlGENTLY unto the voice of the Eternalthy God, to observe and to do ALL hiscommandments which I command theethis day, that the Eternal thy God willset thee on high above all nations ofthe earth:

"And all these blessings shall comeon thee, and overtake thee, If thoushalt hearken unto the voice of theEternal thy God.

.'BLESSED shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field.

"BLESSED shall be the fruit of thybody, and the fruit of thy ground, andthe fruit of thy cattle, the increase ofthy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep.

"BLESSED shall be thy basket andthy store.

"BLESSED shalt thou be when thoucomest in, ami BLESSED shalt thou bewhen thou goest out" (Deut. 28: 1-6).

Second Tithe[Continued from page 4)

shalt truly tithe all the increase of thyseed, that the field bringeth forth yearby year. And tbou sbalt eat before theLord thy God, in the place which heshall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, andof thine oil, and the firstlings of thyherds and of thy flocks; THAT THOUMAYEST LEARN TO FEAR THELORD THY GOD ALWAYS."

Part of the reason for doing these

The GOOD NEWS

things is that )'0/1 may GROW SPIRITUALLY in the love, fear and respectof the Lord your God.

Now how can you be sure this titheis meant for YOllr use? The first tithewas always given to the Levite-sinceChrist, to the Melrhisedec Priesthoodfor the carrying out of the Work ofGod. It was absolutely FORBIDDENfor the average person to take of thattithe for his own personal use.

Your own Tithe

Notice again Verse 23 where Godsays: "And THOU SHALT EAT before the Lord thy God." Here He isspeaking to the people and telling themTHEY are to eat of the tithe of theircorn, wine, oil, etc. This then is aseparate or different tithe from the oneto be used to carry out the work of theministry.

It is a second tithe which God hascommanded for OUR OWN USE. Godisn't unjust. He has matched the tithewhich He has commanded for His ownby giving us a tithe of 0111' own. We areallowed as much as God has requiredfor Himself. Nothing could be morefair than that.

This tithe is to provide us with theexpense money to take a vacation everyyear so that we might observe God'sannual Holy Days. He tells us we areto eat of this second tithe INTHE PLACE WHERE HE SHALLCHOOSE TO PLACE HIS NAME.But have you noticed what fantasticallybeautiful places God has chosen inwhich to place His name?

Fabulous Squaw Valley, right in theheart of the gorgeous, breath-takingSierras, was constructed at the cost of21 million dollars of the taxpayersmoney. Thousands of tourists flowthrough there each summer on theirvacations which are financed by bankloans, credit cards or savings accumulated over long periods of time. Yetevery fall, God's People completely takeover the valley and enjoy almost thesale occupancy of it and its beauties asa result of the second tithe God hasgiven them. No bills to stare them inthe face when they get home. Everything paid for and out of the way asa result of their second tithe.

Big Sandy with our own huge Tabernacle and all the beauty of the EastTexas woods is a sight to delight theeye. In order to get there, many passright by and have the opportunity ina short side trip to see such sights asCarlsbad Caverns and many other greatnatural wonders of the earth.

Jekyll Island was the exclusive playground of some of the richest men inthe world. Now its beauty and exclusiveness will be shared by those ofGod's Church during the Feast ofTabernacles this year.

God surely has blessed and abundantly provided for our every need as a result of our obedience to Him. Notmany of the people of the world canbe assured a vacation completely paidfor EACH YEAR. Most of them ontheir vacations work around the houseor find a part-time job and save foryears to enjoy the kind of trip providedfor us each year.

Some Rob Themselves

In spite of all this, some gripe, grumble and carp about having to save thistithe for their own use. Some only savea part of it. Others wait until it's timeto leave for the Feast and take theirlast check or two, pile the children intothe car and start out for the Feast hoping against hope they will have sufficient cash to keep from running up abill they will have to pay after theyget home.

These same people often wonder whytheir car seems to break down moreoften, their gas mileage seems to be lowand someone alwaF seems to get sickbefore they return home. They are being punished and don't seem to realizewhy.

In principle, God is referring alsoto the second tithe in Malachi 3. Ifyou are not faithfully, carefully, diligently and FEARFULLY saving yoursecond tithe, HOW CAN YOU EXPECT GOD TO BLESS YOU.

This tithe is for YOllr benefit. It isto provide for )'0111' expense to theFeast, for YOllr transportation, for YOllrfood and for Y01lr entertainment andpleasure during these Holy Days. Godhas commanded that you keep this titheso that you might use it for yourself.

September, 196'1

What a thoughtful and loving Creatorto command us to save a tithe for ourenjoyment and pleasure.

Learn to USE-NOTAbuse Your Tithe

He does, however, expect you to properly USE your second tithe and notjust spend it. Anyone can throw moneyaway. It takes a wise man to use it ina proper manner. In Deuteronomy14:24-27, God tells you some of theways in which you use your secondtithe - specific things for which tospend it.

Ancient Israel, being a farming nation, was told to bring their secondtithe of their corn, wine, oil, etc. tothe place where God would choose toset His name. He then said that if thedistance would be too great and theproduce too bulky they could sell thistithe, thereby getting money whichwould be much easier to carry, and usethat money to provide their transportation to the Feast and the food theywould need once they got there.

Some of you reading this article arefarmers by occupation. You could certainly bring a part of your second tithein the form of canned or frozen fruits, vegetables or meats. This produce couldthen be used to provide your mealsduring the time you are at the Feast.Others of you work at some other tradeor occupation to earn your living. Youare not paid in the form of producebut with a salary check. A tenth of thatcheck should be laid aside each paydayto provide for your expenses to theFeast.

That should be a tenth of the grossamount of your check. In other words, the tithe should be figured on the totalamount you earn before your taxes andother deductions are made. This moneyshould generally be placed in a bankfor safe-keeping. Large sums of moneyshould never be stuck away in a drawerin your dresser. One of the members ofmy church had to learn this lesson thehard way. HIS house was broken intorecently and nearly $300 of his secondtithe stolen. He learned a bitter hardlesson. Apparently the lesson was welllearned. He repented deeply of beingso foolish and a few days later God

The GOOD NEWS

allowed him to get back the bulk ofthe amount which was stolen.

It is usually better to keep this second tithe in a completely separate

account from your checking account. In that way you are not tempted to"borrow" from your second tithe andthereby find yourself in serious trouble. Many is the individual who has rationalized himself into thinking he can"borrow" from his second tithe forsome special occasion and repay it later. Some have borrowed from their secondtithe to start a business which they weresure: would enable them to return themoney in a short time. Usually theyhave found that their business has gotten worse instead of better and thatthey NEVER were able to repay themoney they had stolen. As a result, they had to miss the Feast for a year, lose out spiritually and generally learna very bitter lesson.

By putting this money in a specialsavings account, you can obviate thepossibility of getting your personalmoney mixed up with your second titheand at the same time, earn a smallamount of interest on your savings account. In that way, you are using yourtithe to earn a small amount more foryou.

How Should It Be Used?

Then comes the question of how toproperly use your tithes for the Feast. What about your automobile expenses? Can you use a portion of your secondtithe for repairs needed on your automobile in order to go to the Feast? Can you buy tires for your automobile? What about a battery? Just what expenses can and should be paid fromyour second tithe?

Under these circumstances, it is ,goodto ask yourself the question, "Is thisexpense necessary in order to attendGod's commanded Feast or is it simplywork the car needs and this would bea good way to pay for it?"

If your car needs repairs in order foryou to attend the Feast, you may paya certain portion of the cost of repairsfrom second tithe.

You need to figure the total numberof miles you drive each year. Thenfigure what percentage of those miles

Children at play in Squaw Valley. God hasprovided His people wilh breath-taking sceneryand lovely surroundings in which to enjoyHis Festivals.

was driven in attending God's Feasts. If you drive on an average of 10,000miles a year and the total mileagedriven to attend God's Feasts is 1000miles, you could then pay one-tenth ofthe upkeep of your automobile fromyour second tithe. The same thingwould apply to tires or other necessaryupkeep of your car.

But the important thing to rememberis that you NEED to attend God'sFeasts. That is the command God gives(Ex. 12:17; Deut. 16:16). It is conceivable, in some cases, you could spendthe bulk of your second tithe using thisprorated method and then not haveenough money left to pay for yourexpenses to the Feast. Obviously thiswould not be the thing you should do.

If that part of the upkeep on yourcar which could be paid by second tithewould be so large as to take most ofyour second tithe, you should plan onusing some other means to get to theFeast. Perhaps you should even planon doing the repairs with your ownmoney in order to assure yourself thatyou will have sufficient to attend God'scommanded Holy Days.

Can You Buy Clothing?

Another question that frequentlycomes up concerns the buying of clothing from second tithe. Normally, youshould not plan on buying clothingfrom your second tithe. The only clothing you would normally purchase fromsecond tithe would be special types ofclothing which would be needed at the

18

feast and are not normallv a part ufyour wardrobe. Many of the brethrenfrom warmer climates here in Southern California and other areas of theUnited States in traveling to the Feastin Squaw Valley have to buy heavierand warmer clothing than they normallyneed at home. It wasn't a regular partof their wardrobe but an additionalexpense need to properly attend theFeast.

It would only be on a very rareoccasion that you should buy an integralpart of your wardrobe with secondtithe money. Such an occasion mightbe the individual who has had a difficult year or suffered some hardshipand doesn't have proper clothing towear in order to attend God's Feast. But such a case is an 1I111tstlal one indeed!

Whatever Your Soul Desires

At times people have asked whetheror not they could buy slip covers forthe furniture, tricycles for the childrenand a gun or fishing equipment forDad. In spite of the fact that thesethings would not be used primarily atthe Feast, they reason that the Scripture says you are to buy whatsoeveryour soul desires, and their soul desiresslip covers for the furniture, tricyclesfor the children and a gun or fishingequipment for Dad. This is erroneousreasonmg.

God is talking about your buyingwhatever you might desire to be usedAT THE FEAST! He is primarily talkabout food and drink.

The whole reason for spending yourtithe in this way is that you may learnto look forward to the wonderful, enjoyable and pleasant time you haveworshiping God.

Gifts?

Then what about gifts for the childrea? Is it wrong for you to buy somesmall gift for your children on the wayto the Feast? The answer is no. Buthere again caution should be used. Youshould not be buying your child greatexpensive gifts simply because it isfrom your second tithe. A small doll, books or games which will help makethe Feast a pleasant and enjoyable time

The GOOD NEWS

for your child are perfectly all right. But DO NOT buy the year's supplyof toys on the way to the Feast.

You should be teaching your childthe very principles of tithing the yeararound. If your child is old enoughto have a small income from mowinglawns or doing odd jobs around theneighborhood, he should be keepinga second tithe. But if your child is sosmall that he is unable to do that, youcould take this opportunity to teachhim how to properly use money bygiving a small amount to the child andguiding him in the spending of it during the feast.

Let your child learn to make decisions and learn the value of money bydoing his own shopping. Let him learnthat he only has a certain amount tospend and will have to stay within thatamount. These lessons are priceless infuture years.

Side Trips?

In journeying to the Feast, is itright and proper to plan your trip sothat one or two of the natural wondersand scenic spots might be included onthe way. These wonders help us torealize the power, glory and might ofour God. They help us in our worshipof Him which is certainly only right.

These side trips might take you asmuch as one hundred miles off yourregular route of travel. But when thetrips begin to entail an additional twoor three hundred miles in the oppositedirection of the Feast, they should notbe taken on second tithe. If a trip ofthis nature is to be undertaken, itshould be done at your own expense.

Some have wanted to detour severalhundred miles in order to see relativesand members of the family and haven'tbeen too pleased when a minister hasadvised against it.

Let's look at the problem for a moment. If you begin to make these sidetrips to see the family, what is happening? The MAIN REASON for theLrip, the o!Jserving uf God's Huly Dayswhich picture His Plan of salvation, becomes almost forgotten. It becomesa matter that the reason for the tripis to see the family and incidently youare going to one of God's Festivals.

September, 1963

Brethren, THAT IS WRONG! We areto be putting the Kingdom or Familyof God first in our lives, not our ownfamily. This second tithe is to help usserve God more fully, not 0111' ownfamilies.

Used at Home?

What about those who do not havesufficient second tithe to go to theFeast? Can they stay home and usewhat they have there? For the answerto that question, turn to Deuteronomy12:17-19: "Thou MAYEST NOT EATWITHIN THY GATES the tithe ofthy corn, or of thy wine, or of thyoil . . . But thou MUST EAT THEMBEFORE THE LORD THY GOD inthe place which the Lord thy Godshall choose . . ."

God says we are to use our secondtithe only in the place which He haschosen. In the fall season of the year, there are only THREE PLACES in theUnited States where God has chosento put His name-Big Sandy, SquawValley, and Jekyll Island. Your titheis to be used in going La these placesand for your expense while there. ButNOT AT HOME!

During the other Feast seasons ofthe year, Unleavened Bread and theother Holy Days, God many times hasservices right in your own area. In thatcase, you could use a small amount ofyour tithe for expenses of that Feastbecause that is the place where Godhas put His name for that Feast.

You could use a small amount ofit to help provide the food which isso abundantly served during those days.If you were to have someone from anoutlying area in your home at thattime, a portion of the groceries to feedthese people could be purchased outof your tithe.

Remember that the Feast of Tabernacles is when God's Church is alltogether at the Feast. Never cut yourself short by spending too much atthe other Feasts that you cannot bewith God's people at the great Feastin the fall.

How to Use at the Feast

Just how should you use your tithein going to the Feast and while you are

September, 1963

at the Feast? God tells us in Deuteronomy 14:26-27 that we are to enjoyourselves in what wc eat and what wedrink. He commands us TO REJOICEbefore Him.

Certain families in the past havejourneyed to the Feast by sleeping eachnight in their car. In the morning, they would stop at a Safcway store, buy some fruit and cereal and eat themin the car. When night fell again theywould once more curl up in the carfor a few short hours of uncomfortable, cramped sleep.

It wasn't that they didn't have sufficient second tithe to eat in restaurantsand sleep in motels. They were simplydenying themselves so that they mightturn in a large amount of excess titheonce the Feast was over.

They were DISOBEYING one ofthe major commands concerning theFeast. They weren't REJOICING BEFORE GOD. They were stoically depriving themselves of the enjoyablepleasant time they should have beenhaving.

During the Feast season and on second tithe, you should eat in GOODRESTAURANTS. You sbould stay INNICE MOTELS. You should learnto enjoy and appreciate the FINERTHINGS which you may not be ableto afford at other times of the year. You should learn to leave a tip andconduct yourself in a proper mannerwhen in a public place.

This is the time you can afford tobuy the BETTER wines and the moreexpensive cuts of meat which are offered in good restaurants. In this way,you will learn to better your own standard of living the year around. To somepeople, a rug on the floor is a needlessluxury simply because they have neverlearned to appreciate some of the nicerthings in life. Yet once you becomefamiliar with these things, you can seetheir desirability.

A Word of Caution

Here it is necessary to insert a wordof caution. God expects us to liveBALANCED. It is right to use yoursecond tithe to eat in good restaurantsand to stay in fine motels. But it isn't

The GOOD NEWS

right to SQUANDER AND THROWAWAY second tithe just to get rid ofit. God isn't a wastrel. He doesn'twant us to be one either.

Since the Feast is now being heldin three locations here in the UnitedStates, most of you have far shorterdistances to travel in order to attend. Many of those with good paying jobsfind that they have an abundance ofsecond tithe even after they have paidall their own expense.

Because of this abundance, some fewhave brought ridicule on the Churchof God by the way they have spenttheir tithe. These people have unthinkingly squandered their money just toget rid of it. They have felt they hadto spend it all on themselves or theywere being deprived of what is rightfully theirs.

They have been SELFISH and concerned only with their own desires notthinking of others. This selfishness hascaused them to pay more than a houseor motel is really worth simply fortheir own comfort and convenience.

In Squaw Valley, the people beganto bid against one another in order tostay in the most convenient location. As a result, the owners of the housesbegan to take advantage of God'sChurch by charging far more than thehouse was worth. Those with themoney paid the price while others hadto go begging. This past year the priceson some motels, and especially housesin Squaw Valley itself, had gone up asmuch as TWO HUNDRED PERCENT over two years ago.

These price rises were primarily dueto the careless, thollghtless way some ofyou used your second tithe. As a result, the people we deal with began to tryto take advantage of us and are ridiculing God's Work just as the nations ofthis world ridicule the United Statesand the way it throws its wealtharound.

These problems have been solvedand brought under control now. Butthey were brought about by the SELF1sHNEss, GREED AND THOUGHTLESSNESS of God's People, Let's besure it doesn't happen again. Be sureYOII are not guilty of mis-using yourtithe.

God's people relax in friendly conversationafter lunch at the Tabernacle site in BigSandy, Texas,

What About an Excess?

What if you are one of those whohas been abundantly blessed by Godand have an excess of tithe? What areyou supposed to do with it?

God's way is the way uf giving andsharing. Jesus said, "... freely ye havereceived, freely give" (Matt. 10:8),Paul repeated the same thing in Acts20: 35 by saying, "... It is moreblessed to give than to receive."

God has given us love, repentanceand forgiveness. He has blessed us fromHis abundance. Should we do less withthose less fortunate than we?

God repeatedly exhorts us to remember the Levite, the widow, the fatherless, the poor, and the stranger withinour gates. The Levitical priesthood hasbeen replaced by the ministry of today.Your excess second tithe helps to paythe way of YOllr ministers to the Feastso you will have .someone there topreach to you and explain the Bibleto you.

The ministers do not save a secondtithe even as the Levites didn't save asecond tithe. Your excess second titheis to help pay the way of your min ..isters to the Feast so that they mightteach and make clear the Plan of salvation to you.

Your extra second tithe can also be

20

used to help some of the elderly orwidows who have no second tithe attend the Feast. Since you cannot knowwho has the most urgent need, you areto give your extra second tithe to theministry who will make sure those mostdeserving will he given the privilege ofattending, and rejoicing before the Lordtheir God.

You are not to deprive yourself inorder to give more into the second titheaccount. God commands you to REJOICE before Him, but at the sametime, you are not to deprive someoneelse of the privilege of attending because you have mis-used the abundanceGod has given you.

Remember, be BALANCED in allthings.

Once you can see how much youneed in order to rejoice before God andreturn home again, you can turn anyextra which is ouer and above whatyou NEED into the business office herein Pasadena or one of the business offices at the Feast.

God will bless you for giving someone else the chance to share in yourabundance.

Now let's all look forward to themost enjoyable and marvelous Feastever by determining RIGHT NOW tobe there REJOICING before the Lordour God. Drive carefully. Really enjoythe abundance God has given you! Remember to be praying for the safety ofone another and don't forget to thankthe loving God who makes it all possible through the second tithe He hasgiven to you.

Seven Proofs(Continued from page 6)

unable to incorporate it as, simply,"The Church of God"!

Realizing the doctrinal truth ofGod's Word that the various churcheswere also identified as to their GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATIONS, God ledMr. Armstrong to incorporate thePHILADELPHIA era of the TrueChurch of God as "The Radio Churchof God."

God says, of this Philadelphia era ofHis Church, "See, I have set before theean OPEN DOOR" (Rev. 3:8). The

The GOOD NEWS

Apostle Paul said, "For a great DOORand effectual is opened unto me . . ."(I Cor. 16:9), speaking of the doorGod opened hefore him for the prf>a.-hing of the Gospel! He said, "Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preachChrist's Cnrpel, and a DOOR wasopened unto me of the Lord" (II Cor.2: 12). When the Apostle Paul beganthe second 19-year cycle of the preaching of the True Gospel-now takingthe Truth of God into EUROPE, hespoke of this opening before him as aDOOR!

The DOOR that God has opened before His True Church today is mainlythe door of RADIO! For years, therewas only the one small local congregation, up in Eugene, Oregon-but aRADIO door had been opened, whichwas growing by leaps and boundsfast hemming NATIONAL, and soonto become WORLD-WIDE!

Therefore, since God has opened thisgreat door of radio before His TrueChurch, it was obvious that to FURTHER IDENTIFY this True Church ofGod, not alone by geographical location, but by the great DOOR God hadopened, that it should be incorporated, legally, as "The Radio Church of God" ,

But the actual BIBLICAL NAME ofthe True Church has always been, andalways WILL BE - THE CHURCHOF GOD!

WHAT the Church Really IS

God names things, or people, WHATTHEY ARE! There is real meaning ina name.

When God writes of HIS Church,He calls it HIS! It is the Church-andthe only Church, that truly BELONGSto Him. His true Church is directlyowned by Him, it is His instrument,His own property, to perform HisWORK on this earth!

The English word, "church" merelymeans "congregation." Wherever youfind the word "church" in the NewTestament, it is translated from theGreek word, "ekklesia," from whichsuch English words as "ecclesiastical"or "ecclesiastics" are derived. The wordsimply means "group" or "collection"of people! There is nothing holy, nothing sacred, about the word CHURCH,

September, 1963

by itself. It is only when you furtheridentify WHICH GROUP OF PEOPLE, with the name of GOD, that thereis anything hnly ahollt the name'

Therefore, when a person of thisworld says he or she belongs to the"Lutheran Church" he is not necessarily misappropriating that name! Thatis-he is affirming that he does, indeed, belong or pertain to that GROUPOF PEOPLE who follow the teachingsof Martin Luther-not God!

Those members of worldly organizations of MEN, with their human names, are, In most cases, CORRECTLYLABELED! They are correctly identified! That is-they really ARE an"Adventist" or "Baptist" or "Methodist" group-and they most certainlyARE NOT the GROUP THAT BELONGS TO GOD!

"I will build MY Church," saidJesus Christ. And it IS HIS! JesusChrist is the direct HEAD of theChurch (Col. 1.18), which is describedas His own Body (Eph. 1 :23). TheONLY ones who are truly members ofthat ONE (Eph. 4:4-6) Body arc thosewho have been PUT INTO it, by thebaptism of the Holy Spirit. Notice,"For by one Spirit are we all baptizedinto ONE BODY, whether we beJews or Gentiles, whether we be bondor free; and have been all made todrink into one Spirit" (I Cor. 12: 13).

The BAPTISM with the Holy Spiritis the receiving of the Spirit at thetime of the laying on of hands, afterREPENTANCE, and WATER baptism. It is NOT, as some of the wildest, emotional FALSE churches ofthis world have said, a PHYSICALEMOTION OR SPEAKING INTONGUES!

Notice, then, it is only those whoIIAVE received God's Spirit that arein the True Church. The Church is not aphysical building. The Church comesto, and assembles inside of, a building,or a rented hall. But the building isnot the Church-but a building! It isthat group of CONVERTED PEOPLE,in whom is the very SPIRIT OF GOD,which makes up the Church!

Jesus said we must REPENT (Luke13: 3, 5). Peter said REPENTANCEmust precede baptism (Acts 2:38;

September, 1963

3:19). God inspired Paul to say, "Foras many as are LED by the Spirit ofGod, they are the sons of God" (Rom.8:14).

"If any man have not the Spiritof Christ," God inspired Paul to write,"HE IS NONE OF HIS!" (Rom.8:9). Yet-it is only through OBEDIENCE to God-through total repentance, complete surrender to God,symbolized by figuratively laying downYoltr life, and yoltr whole being inwater baptism, that you may receivethe Spirit of God!

NOT ONE of you, brethren, is amember of the True Church of Godmerely because you attend. WeeklySabbath attendance, or being at theFestivals-tithe-paying, participation insocial activities, taking part in a localChurch paper, or being "active" in the"church," NONE of these things mean,of themselves, you are a member ofthe True Church of God! Unconvertedchildren, unbaptized ones ill attendance at Feasts, or a local meeting,THEY are not MEMBERS of the Bodyof Christ'

It is ONLY those who have reallybeen conquered of God, who have unconditionally REPENTED, been baptized, and have really received of HISSPIRIT who are members!

They are then JOINED TO HIM!They do NOT join tbemselues together, becoming a "group" of human beings, known by a certain name. Rather, theybecome directly JOINED TO CHRIST!

Notice it! "I am the true VINE,and my Father is the husbandman,"said Jesus. "Every branch IN ME thatbeareth not fruit he taketh away."

"Abide in me, and I in you. As thebranch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more canye, except ye abide in me. I AM THEVINE, ye are the branches: He thatabideth in me, and I in him, the samebringeth forth much fruit: for withoutme ye can do nothing" (John 15: 1-5) .

The newly begotten child of God becomes directly JOINED TO CHRIST!He is the Vine, supplying the life-giving sap from the roots which producesthe fmit on the branches!

The BRANCHES, or the individualmembers of the Church are joined,

The GOOD NEWS

ONLY THROUGH THE VINE! Ifany member is not truly IN CHRIST,and Christ LIVING IN HIM, then heis NOT a member of the True Church!

"That which we have seen and hearddeclare we unto you," wrote John, "thatye also may have FELLOWSHIP withus: and truly our fellowship is WITHTHE FATHER, and with his SonJesus Christ" (I John 1:3).

The true FELLOWSHIP of onemember of the Church to another is INand THROUGH the FATHER, andthe SON! Any worldly organization ofmen, banding themselves together, intheir OWN fellowship, is just like agroup of branches, lying in a pile! Not joined to a productive, life-givingVINE, they are UNPRODUCTIVE,THEY ARE LIFELESS, THEY AREROTTING ... AND THEY BEGINTO STINK!

Do you see, brethren? The NAMEof the True Church of God is a vitallyimportant PROOF of the Church! It isNOT to be taken lightly! And it hasreal meaning.

God names things what they are.If you ARE a member of His ownChurch, then you should be namedwhat you ARE! But if you are amember of a group of people-deadbranches-not joined to the only TrueVine, then you should also be named, just what you ARE!

That is why so many of the "names"of the worldly churches are so appropriate! The "Catholic" or "worldly"church is JUST THAT! It is a churchof the WORLD - universally soCOMPLETELY worldly, and not ofGod! The "Separate Baptists" AREtruly SEPARATE from the True Vine! The "Methodists" DO truly have aDIFFERENT METHOD from God's!The "Congregationalists" truly HAVEbanded TIIEMSELVES together, as apile of rotting branches!

There are a tiny FEW who knowthe true Biblical name of God's TrueChurch, and have STOLEN THATNAME. But having this one STOLEN"proof," which is only ONE OUT OFTHREE PARTS OF THIS SECONDMAJOR PROOF OF SEVEN, will noteuer make them, really, the TRUECHURCH OF GOD!

How truly grateful and thankful we

21

should be that God, in His mercy, hascalled us to become true members ofthe very Body of Christ-truly JOINEDto the Father and the Son, through theHoly Spirit-and not wandering in thespiritual darkness of this blindedworld! What a blessing, if we are trulymembers of the CHURCH OF GOD!

cattle, nor thy stranger that is withinthy gates." So as you are to keep theSabbath Holy and keep what God hasmade sacred time, so are your son anddaughter, your children. The Sabbathis Holy time, sacred to God, and assuch our children should not be allowedto run loose like so many wild animals.

I think that most of you know, as Ihave said before, that at home I havea little dog. My brother gave him tome as a wedding present. I have toteach that dog. I have to teach him tosit still, and to stay still. I have to teachhim there are certain pieces of furniture that he dare not touch or comenear. I also have to teach him thatthough he smells food, every nerve inhis body quivering, that while my wifeand I are eating at the table he cannotsit and beg, but must lie in the otherroom with the door open. I don't haveto pen him or cage him like a wildanimal, because he is tame. He hasbeen trained. If I can train my dog,you can train your children, and I meanthis sincerely. Two hours a week is nottoo long for your children to sit PERFECTLY STILL, and listen to the service and to stay still AFTER the serviceis over. It is the Sabbath day and it isHoly, and your children are to keep itHoly as well as you. The Ten Commandments include your children andthe command to keep the seventh dayHoly. Your children must be INCHURCH, and they must keep theSabbath HOLY the same as you do.This is a part of the Ten Commandments, and there is no use in kiddingourselves. You are just heading for theLake of Fire if you don't obey this. Remember it is the parents who are heldresponsible.

The next command, "Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may

22

be long upon the land which the Lordthy God giveth thee." It is a dual command. It is not only to the child, it iscertainly understood that the parentmust teach the child obedience to thatcommand. Then, "Thou shalt not kill.Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thoushalt not steal. Thou shalt not bearfalse witness against thy neighbour.Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour'shouse, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, norhis maidservant, nor his ox, nor hisass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's."

These are the commandments of God.Have you ever wondered why in Exodus21 :15 Jesus Christ, the Logos, theSpokesman says, "He that smiteth hisfather, or his mother, shall be surely putto death"? And in Verse 17, "He thatreviles (the true word here is reviles, not curses, or it should be even morecorrectly rendered sasses) his father, orhis mother, shall surely be put todeath"? I think most of you rememberthe example in II Kings 2 :24 whereElisha looked back and cursed thesechildren who were sassing him and Godcaused two she bears to come out andtear forty-two of them in pieces, buthave you ever stopped to realize why!

Because God was so kind that Hewas not going to let them go on andlive building the wrong kind of character which would lead them to the Lakeof Fire. God had them destroyed beforeit was too late so they could be resurrected in a better world, where if theirparents had not taught them any betterGod would use His force to whip themin line and keep them from living along life of disobedience that wouldfinally imbed so deeply the wrong kindof character that they would have to bedestroyed in hell fire, and would betotally unable to ever live by everyWord of God and build good and honest character into themselves.

Your children are living under a different dispensation. You know and understand the laws of God in a way thatthey couldn't then, and you are heldresponsible and so are your children.I want you to notice that the sameChrist that gave these laws said later,"Suffer little children to come untome."

The GOOD NEWS

You have to shape and mold anddevelop the character of your childrenso they will learn to love God and hateevil. Turn to Leviticus 19:32, startingin Verse 30, God says, "Ye shall keepmy sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the Lord. Regard not themthat have familiar spirits, neither seekafter wizards, to be defiled by them: Iam the Lord your God. Thou shaltRISE UP before the hoary head, andHONOUR the face of the old man,AND FEAR THY GOD: I am theLord." How many of our children areso quiet and obedient that when anelder comes into the room they willrise? How many of your children address their minister as Mr. rather thanby his first name? How many of themaddress you as father and mother, andnot just as pop or mom, or by yourfirst name? They should literally obeythis command in Leviticus to rise before those who are elders and learnto show honour and respect them. Thisis the Word of GOD! Are you willingto obey it? Are you LIVING by it?There are many scriptures in the Biblethat show that our children are to bepresent during the Passover, one of themost sober meetings of the year. Theyare to see you partake of it and youare to explain to them why you partakeof it.

Notice Deuteronomy 6: 1, the statutes, and the commandments, and judgmentsthat God has given to us, one of whichis that you teach DILIGENTLY allof these unto your children.

Frankly brethren, one of the majorreasons that we are having these problems is the fact that you are not holding Bible studies in your own homeswith your children. You are not fulfilling your responsibility, your dutiestoward them in teaching and trainingthem by the Word of God and tolive by it. You should not try towheedle and plead them into lookingat it your way. You should COMMAND them. You are the AUTHORITY of God Almighty to your children.God has given you that authority. It isup to you to exercise it. Notice Leviticus 20:9, "Everyone that sasses (theKing James says curses but this shouldbe rendered sasses) his father or hismother shall be surely put to death ...

his blood shall be upon him." Brethren,I have seen children stand and sass theirparents right here in the hall wherewe meet. This should not be, but I

can't correct it, only you can. There is one thing that I can correct,

and that is the situation of the childrenrunning loose and wild after Churchis over. Now I have asked Mr. Stewartof the Fresno Church to get up and goout several times during the servicesand see if there are any children outside, and if they are running aroundplaying on the stairs or in the toiletshe is going to bring them in and wewill stop the service, interrupt it rightthere, and ask you, the parent, to givean account.

We are the Church of God. We bearthe name of God Almighty, the Creatorof heaven and earth. We cannot destroyproperty that does not helong to us,but which God blessed us with. Again, let me say that this shall not happenagain. I have given Mr. Stewart instructions to grab any child, he sees misbehaving after Church, outside of ourmeeting room, by the nap of the neckand haul him right in to me and I amgoing to ask Y01l, the PARENT whatis wrong. I am also requiring henceforth that EVERY CHILD STAY INSIDE THE ROOM WHERE WEMEET UNTIL YOU THE PARENTSARE READY TO LEAVE the building.

Now, I wish you to understand thatthis is done in love, but I am trying tolive by every Word of God. I am trying to fulfill what God has said inHebrews 13 :17, watching for yoursouls as one who must give accountto God Almighty, and I do not intendto have the Church of God suffer thehumiliation of being thrown out of theplace that God has given us to meetbecause we cannot keep our children incheck. So henceforth, your children willstay inside the meeting room andKEEP QUIET. They shall not play. Itis the Sabbath, sacred, Holy time toGod and your children are commandedto keep it.

Sincerely,In the Name and by the Authority ofJesus Christ,

Richard D. Armstrong, PastorChurch of God, Fresno, Calif.

(perceived) that it was Samuel. But itwasn't really. What did Saul see?

It was a demon!Satan is the prince of the power of

the air (Eph. 2:2)-he is the god ofthis world (II Cor. 4:4)-he canTRANSFORM HIMSELF into anANGEL OF LIGHT (II Cor. 11:14).Satan-and his demons-have the power to produce visions-seemingly to appear in other human forms, in otheranimal forms-in various shapes andsizes. I Samuel 28, describes a demonbringing forth an apparition in theform of an old man covered over witha huge blanket or mantle.

The next question in this chapter isin Verse 15: "And Samuel said to Saul,Why hast thou disquieted me, to bringme up?" Why does the account read asthough Samuel were speaking to Saul

if it was a demon? It is merely a matter of what Saul

thought it was.We read in Genesis 3:4 that Satan

deceived Eve-" And the serpent saidunto the woman, Ye shall not surelydie." But we know this was NOT ASERPENT SPEAKING-but Satan theDevil himself! Yet the account says, lithe serpent said." In like manner inI Samuel 28 where it records "Samuel"speaking-it was actually SATAN ORA DEMON speaking through the formthat he had produced in vision to Sauland the woman.

It is quite evident that this wasmerely a demon appearing to the witchof Endor and Saul. This scripture inno way contradicts the multitude ofCLEAR SCRIPTURES proving that thesoul is not immortal. This does notcontradict the scriptures which provewe remain in the grave until the resurrection.

demon-complied with Saul's requestfor the "raising of Samuel." We readin Verse 12: "And when the womansaw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice.. . . And the king said unto her, Benot afraid: for what sawest thou? Andthe woman said unto Saul, I saw aGOD-LIKE BEING coming up out ofthe earth" (Jewish translation).

Notice carefully, what we haveSaul believing that the woman couldraise Samuel from the grave. The woman also believing that she could raiseSamuel from the earth. But when Saulasked the woman WHAT SHE SAWshe merely recorded that she saw a"god-like being" ascending out of theearth.

The account continues in Verse 14.Saul then asked the woman, "Whatform is he at? And she said, AN OLDMAN cometh up; and he is COVEREDWITH A MANTLE. And Saul per.ceived (or thought) that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to theground, and bowed himself."

Again, notice very carefully. WhenSaul asked the woman what she sawthese are the words she used to describethe vision: "a god-like being" (Jewishtranslation), "an old man," "he is covered with a mantle."

NOT ONE WORD THAT IT WASSAMUEL!!

Of course, Saul wanted to see Samuel-the woman thought she could raiseSamuel-Saul reasoned in his mind

"Since the soul is not immortaland since the body remains in thegrave until the resurrectionhow do you explain the APPEARING OF SAMUEL TOSAUL - AFTER SAMUEL'SDEATH?" (I Sam. 28).

But we-in God's Church-s-can understand these apparently confusingscriptures. God has revealed to us thekeys of knowledge.

One scripture does not contradict another. Christ said in John 10:35, "Thescripture cannot be broken." Manytimes one scripture seems to contradictanother-seems to say the oppositeto another, but in reality it does NOT!

Turn then to I Samuel 28:6. Noticecarefully, that Saul had inquired of theLord-as to how the outcome of thebattle would go. But in this particularverse God did not answer Saul. Hegave him no answer, neither by anydream nor by any prophet.

In the context, we see Saul went tothe witch at Endor-who had contactwith familiar spirits or DEMONS! Thiswas the immediate conversation between Saul and the woman: "Then saidthe woman, Whom shall I bring upunto thee? And he said, Bring me upSamuel" (I Sam. 28:11). We see thatSaul wanted to speak to Samuel-tofind out how the battle the next daywould go for him. He was verydesperate- and frightened.

The woman-having contact with the

This scripture has puzzled manyand it was written to do exactly that!We read in Isaiah 28: 11 that Godwould speak, "With stammering lipsand another tongue . . . precept uponprecept, precept upon precept; lineupon linc, linc upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go,and fall backward, and be broken, andsnared, and taken." Many portions ofthe Bible are purposely written to beOBSCURE!
