He received his Bachelor Degree in Music Education from Ohio University in the fall of 2000. While attending Ohio University, Marc participated in the concert band, varsity band, trumpet ensemble, wind ensemble, and was a member and Assistant Dance Commander of the Ohio University Marching 110. He was also the 1999 recipient of the Houck Memorial Scholarship, an award given to one junior each year.

Highlight performances under the direction of Mr. Zirille include the Chicago McDonald’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2013, an OSU Skull Session Performance in 2014, and a NFL Cleveland Browns Half time Performance in 2015. The Symphonic Band and the Blue Concert Band received Superior Ratings at both the district and state level. Thank You!Varsity Show 2021 – Under The Lights

Welcome Big Red Band fans! Welcome to Johnstown High School, and welcome to our 21st Annual Varsity Show! And for the second year in a row, we’ve decided to take this show outdoors and perform in beautiful Frank H. Chambers football stadium, with our beautiful brand new scoreboard, generously presented by the 1970 Johnnie football team.

What a difference a year can make? Last year…we were hoping just to have the opportunity to perform...anywhere! Home games were an exercise of ticket distribution, and band members playing in our band stands became a luxury. Road trips…none. So, what did the COVID year teach us? It is more efficient to teach halftime drill to half the band at a time. Thus, the even and odds practice schedule. Bus trips with 185 students are fun, really they are. And Varsity Show outside in the stadium can be accomplished, and with great fanfare. And this year, the ability of not having to limit tickets…come one and come all to watch the Pride of Johnstown.

This year, our Big Red Band tried to share our good “Vibes” with as much variety in our song selections as possible. You like pop, we got that. Country music fan, this is how we roll. We saw a rising sun, and entered night with the sandman. I remember thinking about our theme this past summer. I tell the band students that they have the opportunity to spread joy to many people in our great community. And then I looked up the definition of the word vibe… “the atmosphere of a place as communicated to and felt by others.” Well, I’m hoping that as a fan of the Big Red Band, at some point you were able to feel our good Vibes!!

And this brings us to our grand finale! Varsity Show 2021. I think our band has just been Lights Out this year. Tonight is our sunset, a beautiful end to what truly has been a satisfying season. If you hear something you like, don’t be afraid to share that with the students. As performers, we feed off the energy you provide. It has been an honor and a privilege to spread joy and a love of all things band…hard work, music, dancing, comradery, community, and family. Thank you for sharing a part of your family with me.

Band is a team sport. It takes many people to make the Big Red Band, and this Varsity Show to become a reality. Our band parents, band sponsors, and Big Red Band Boosters are the lifeblood of our program. We also

Page 49: BIG RED BAND
