We will all be watching I have had a few comments about the article in the last issue on the Fight Night planned for the Ruakaka Tavern. Actually I was quite pleased about that article.

as broadly and truthfully as possible.I was out distributing papers around the Ruakaka shops last week and a young Maori girl came up and asked me for a copy. She wanted to see the photo of the boxers inside. I thought “Great, there is something in there for a section of our community I probably don’t cater for particularly well.” I will, no doubt, get more comments about the interview with Herbe Rata in this issue. I would be interested to hear from those who know Herbie a bit better than I do.

that he has “a silver tongue” and perhaps I am a bit susceptible to this kind of persuasion. His answer to the question about whether or not his boxing club is a way of recruiting young men into the Headhunters doesn’t completely reassure me. There is no surer way of making young people want to belong to something then telling them they are not good enough for it. However I have lived long enough to understand that people are complicated. No one is completely good or completely bad. People who have done bad things can do good things. People can change. There is always hope. Sometimes it is those wild, headstrong, young people who get themselves into all kinds of scrapes who turn out to be the best leaders with the most empathy for other people’s problems. I think Herbie would make a good politician. He has that kind of charisma and wiliness. Perhaps he is developing a sense of social justice as indicated by his thoughts on the New Zealand justice system. His loyalty to the Headhunters Gang could be a problem though, if he wanted to join a politcal party. But stranger things have happened. He presents a bit of an enigma. The reported activities of the Headhunters Motorcylce Club, he belongs to undermine civil society.

“The Headhunters is just another club”, says Herbie. According to a Wikipedia article there are currently 110 members of this “club” in prison in New Zealand. In the early 2,000s Headhunters were convicted of running a large methamphetamine ring. There have also been convictions for theft, rape and murder.I have heard local anecdotes about Headhunter gang members extorting money from vulnerable people.in our community. It is not surprising that some of Herbie’s neighbours looked a bit askance at him when he decided to move back to Takahiwai. There is a bit of a vacuum for someone capable of and willing to take some of these young men and women in hand, to help them to learn about discipline and purpose. I believe Herbie Rata has genuine enthusiasm for the sport of boxing. He knows a bit about organising boxing events and he is helping to introduce this sport to our community. I am hoping for the best. He invited me to the Fight Night but I don’t think I will be going. While I understand that boxers are athletes and there is courage and grace in this sport, I don’t like watching people get hurt. I feel a bit the same about watching club rugby. I hope all those beautiful young people come through this event without major damage. In conclusion I just want to say that I believe it helps to shed a bit of light on any situation. If, as some people fear, The Takahiwai Boxing Club is a ruse to recruit young men into the Headhunters then we are all going to be watching.

The Bream Bay News put a few questions on behalf of the people of Ruakaka to the Whangarei District Council’s Group Manager of Infrastructure and Services, Simon Weston on the subject of the proposed sale of sand from the edge of the Ruakaka Sports Park to Northport. We asked: What stage is the negotiation with Northport for this sale at?Mr. Weston, “We haven’t got anything signed between us but we have been discussing it for a while.”Is the sand suitable for the purpose Northport wants to use it for”

for that purpose.”How much money will be made from the sale of the sand?Mr. Weston – “This is commercial information so I cannot say.”Will all the money generated from this sale be spent in Ruakaka.Mr. Weston – “Yes.”

Bruce Cann, who has lived all his life in Ruakaka and whose father was a Whangarei County Councillor, takes issue with a suggestion made in the Bream Bay News editorial of 12 February , that the Roger Hall Memorial Park land was donated to the people of Ruakaka by the NZ Electricity Department at the time of the construction of the Marsden Power Stations.

I have just read the front page article in the Bream Bay

For those that did not read the last issue, I would like to share some of the contents of the article. The article was about holding boxing matches at our local tavern. While I am not against boxing at all, I am appalled at the person or gang that is really backing this event. Are we all idiots? Do the owners of the Ruakaka Tav-ern have any standards of acceptable cliental? I would think the Woods brothers who have interest in the tav-ern wouldn’t associate themselves with gangs. What about Ken Orr, does he still hold an interest? Has he been informed about these boxing events and who is backing them? This promotional boxing event is backed by Head Hunter Member, Herbie Rata. This evil person is no one to look up to. He has already destroyed the lives of

disgusted. I guarantee most people from Takahiwai are

of the name of the club when many of us know that he is associated with the headhunters gang. Now back to the tavern. I enjoy a night down at the tavern once in a while to watch a band and catch up with friends, but that is because I feel safe and I know the tavern is not overrun with gang members. If we allow this event to go ahead, the tavern will lose hard working honest cliental and gain gang members. I am not overacting. This will be Ruakaka’s future. Do we want this to happen?Stand up everyone. Have your say. Don’t be fooled. It’s just another way to recruit your son, your nephew, your brother.

It’s been a while since I have felt the need to vent, and it’s disappointing that the world we live in is such that through my own bemusement and frustration that I feel compelled to vent to our local rate payers through my favourite paper the Bream Bay News.I took my eight - year- old son to school on Monday, he rode his bike, and I tried to skateboard. crossing had not been painted, (all other road markings had). The lady I dealt with took my information in a friendly manor and thanked me for passing it on.The next day the crossing was painted, excellent. Today I noticed two messages on my phone from Downers (the contractors) asking me to make contact. The man I spoke to was polite and friendly, and explained that, he had been out, looked at the stones on the path and understood the issue. However they won’t be sweeping the stones back on to the road because the cars would just spray it back on to the footpath and they would have to come back and do it again and, obviously, an expense would be incurred. I tried to passionately sug-gest that it was not good enough.Downers also explained the stones on the paths are to stay like this for the next 1 to 2 weeks. The contractors are hoping the weather will heat up the tar allowing the stones to stick better. I guess the ones on the paths don’t get to stick to the tar. I can’t believe that WDC waits for people to complain-before they act. This work should have been inspected

Former New Zealand titleholder Lance Revell will attend and is helping with the arrangements. “It is all very controlled”, said Peter. Is Herbie, as some people claim, using his new Takahiwai Boxing Club to recruit members to the Headhunters gang? He says emphatically that he is not. “We don’t need those guys (from the boxing club) in our club. We have enough members.”The Headhunters, he says, is his club and is just like any other club. Given the Headhunters reputation and the discomfort it causes people in Takahiwai to have a member of this gang (or club) living amongst them, why does he continue to be a member? It is a matter of loyalty Herbie explains. “The Takahiwai Rugby League club hasn’t won (the Northland League competition) for ten years but people keep supporting them. They are loyal to Takahiwai and it’s the same thing with my club. I take the good and the bad, whatever comes along. It’s my club. Its really just a motorcycle club.” Isn’t that a Headhunters motif on the Takahiwai Boxing Club T Shirts? Herbie says it is just a skull image and

He took out a loan so he could hire a good lawyer and what he learned from the experience is this –“There are people inside who shouldn’t be there and there are people on the outside who should be locked up.”To get justice you need to pay a good lawyer. his Headhunter connections and time spent in prison. She found out however that he was OK. “I wouldn’t have married him if I thought he was a bad person.”

He doesn’t want to be anywhere else. Herbie Rata grew up in Whangarei. His father was a school principal and his mother was a teacher. He has a long time connection to Takahiwai where his family owned land and he spent most of his weekends. “I belong here in Takahiwai as much as anybody.” For his secondary schooling he went to a Mormon Church College in Hamilton. He began training as a primary school teacher but left two years into the course to work at the AFFCO Freezing Works in Whangarei.

As his parents only son he moved back to Takahiwai to take over the care of the family farm from his parents. He built a house on the land and raises calves and beef cattle. Should people living in Ruakaka be concerned about the presence of a Headhunter gang member in their midst? Are their more burglaries, car thefts, drug deals and extortions in our community, as a result of his living here? Herbie said, “That’s my mother living over the road there. Would I steal from her? My sister lives upon the hill over there. I am not going to steal from her either or from anyone else for that matter.”He says there are people who won’t be seen talking to him in public but come around to see him when they want something. “They are friends when they want to be friends”, he said. He shakes his head after reading the letter sent to the Bream Bay news this week, which calls him an “evil person” and “no one to look up to.” “Wow this person pulls no punches.”

OUR 10-YEAR PLAN – YOUR INPUT IS VITAL!

Work on our new Long Term Plan is about to reach a critical milestone which

should make it much easier to have your say on proposed regional council activities for the next 10 years. The LTP not only sets out our plans for the coming decade but, crucially, how they’re paid for.

Councillor Craig Brown says work to develop the latest LTP is in full swing, but concedes it’s a real and very dif cult balancing act.

“My fellow councillors and I are very keen to improve Northland’s performance across a whole range of areas to try and better meet the varied expectations of our many communities, which in themselves can be quite diverse.”

Craig says that diversity de nitely exists within Coastal South, which stretches from Kokopu across to the western boundaries of urban Whangarei to a few kilometres south of Kaiwaka, including the coastal settlements of Bream Bay and Mangawhai Heads.

“There will be a lot to do in those areas over the next decade, but as councillors we also need to be very mindful of the pressure that puts on rates and the requirement to work collectively in the best interests of the whole region.”

To help them in that work, the council will soon release a useful new tool as part of that process – a Consultation Document setting out the key issues being proposed for the LTP.

“The Consultation Document is speci cally designed to provide communities with a ‘fair representation’ of key issues in a way that should be easily understood,”Craig says.

“It’s scheduled to be released for public feedback in late March and will help ensure we’re having the right sort of debates with our communities going forward.”

A long-term Bream Bay resident, Craig says encouraging sustainable development is a core regional council goal and at a local level he believes things are now starting to improve across a number of economic fronts.

“In recent years, some development in the area has not progressed as quickly as some may have liked, but things are de nitely picking up. Business seems to be a little more optimistic.”

“People are showing interest in local land and there are a number of interesting developments on the horizon, including on the aquaculture front and moves by Marsden Maritime Holdings for lift-out facilities for the boating industry.”

Craig says in order for the council to make the most well-informed decisions possible, it’s important for as many people as possible to have their say on its proposed LTP.

“I’d like to encourage everyone to

take the time to familiarise themselves with the LTP and let us know what they think.”

People who want to know when the Consultation Document and other important documents are available can register to receive automatic email updates from council’s website.

“The subscription service will let you know when issues, projects or plans are available for public comment and you can also opt to receive noti cations of our latest news, council meeting agendas and minutes, job vacancies, tender, publicly-noti ed consents, and more.”

Local regional councillor Craig Brown says Northlanders should take a bow after making more than 430 public submissions on two important region-wide transport plans.

Craig says transport-related issues affect all Northlanders and the Draft Regional Land Transport Plan (RLTP) and Draft Regional Public Transport Plan (RPTP) are key documents.

The RLTP will eventually be the blueprint for tens of millions of dollars’ worth of roading infrastructure spending over the next three years. The RPTP sets out how public passenger transport services and assistance for transport-disadvantaged will be provided for

people wishing to elaborate on their written submissions.

Craig says calls to improve Matakohe’s road bridges and support for continuation of Kaitaia’s public bus service had featured strongly, but given the hearings had yet to be held, it would be inappropriate to go into too much detail at this stage.

Meanwhile, he says the Regional Transport Committee is aware many motorists are unhappy over the recent timing of some summer State Highway roadworks, including well-reported problems of icked-up stones damaging windscreens locally.

Craig says the committee enjoys a good working relationship with NZTA

PLEASING RESPONSE TO TRANSPORT PLANS(which funded the works) and John Bain had raised those and other issues with it as RTC chairman.

“He’s had assurances from NZTA that it is now very conscious of these issues and will be working very hard to rectify them and avoid repeats in the future.”

YOUR COUNCILLOR – COASTAL SOUTH

over the next decade. The Regional Transport Committee,

chaired by Councillor John Bain, includes members of all three district councils.

“The response rate is a real credit to the group, which continues to work incredibly hard to suggest how the limited funding available should be allocated by NZ Transport Agency in the best interests of all Northlanders.

“Importantly, it’s a testament to the many Northlanders who’ve have taken time to have their say on transport issues concerning them.”

Submissions will be considered shortly at public hearings in Whangarei on March 4 and 5 and will include personal appearances from dozens of

We know when our children are sick. They go from being active and alert to quiet, grumpy, sleepy, clingy and wanting more cuddles. Often they lose in-terest in food. The most common general signs of illness are fever, pain, vom-iting, diarrhoea, cough, headache and rash. Fever (body temperature above

-ruses. Children’s natural defence mechanisms are less well-developed than adults’ immune systems, so children are at higher risk of infections.Fever accompanied by cough, runny or blocked nose and headache can signi-fy the common cold. “Ask us about our Children’s Pain & Fever fact card”, recommend Self Care pharmacists, “because this has a lot of helpful hints for looking after sick children. Also it indicates what other signs to look out for in children that indicate more serious illnesses.” Keeping your child comfortable

or ibuprofen to reduce fever, are best when your child has a cold. “But” advice from Self Care pharmacists is “use proper medicine-measuring spoons when measuring-out doses of liquid medicines. Don’t use kitchen teaspoons because they are not accurate, the volume varies from spoon to spoon, and your child will not receive the correct dose of medicine.” It is important to look out for sore throats in children as it can lead to Rheumat-

and young people, aged four and above. Sore throats generally clear up by themselves but “strep” sore throats can lead to rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease which can be life threatening. It is important to check up children with sore throats so if they do have a “strep” sore throat they can be treated with antibiotics and stop the illness progressing any further. If you are unsure then get in touch with your doctor or your pharmacist.Parents can encourage their children to take simple steps to help prevent the spread of some illnesses. Children should cover their mouths and noses when they sneeze and cough, and then wash their hands straight after. Washing hands is also VERY important after going to the toilet, and before eating. They should not share cups and drink bottles, nor spoons and other eating utensils. Tissues are best for blowing noses, and then they should be thrown away im-mediately. Immunisation is generally one of the most effective ways of protecting chil-dren against infections that can cause serious diseases and associated com-plications (including death). All forms of immunisation work by causing the body to produce an immune response, in the same way it would if exposed to the disease but without the child suffering all the symptoms and consequences. In the future, when the child comes into contact with the disease, the immune system responds quickly and helps prevent the child developing the disease. The World Health organisation and the Ministry of Health recommend immu-nisation for your children. However there may be cases where it is not suitable to immunise and it is important to see your pharmacist or doctor regarding possible risks and/or contraindications. Children with asthma or allergies, or who are recovering from an illness, such as a common cold, can be immunised.

reactions to immunisation are very rare. Ask your Self Care pharmacists for a copy of the Children’s Illnesses and Children’s Pain & Fever fact cards that contains useful information for parents.

Principal Paul Ramsay said the school is missing out on a substantial amount of money, around $10,000 through contributions not being paid. “We don’t budget for it as we know we won’t get it, but I don’t think people realize the cumulative effect of all those fees. We do the best we can to keep our class sizes down and an extra $10,000 would really help.”

The rate of collection is 61%, which Principal Wayne Buckland said has improved markedly (from around 40%) since the school began sending out invoices by email and giving parents the option to pay online in 2014. He said, “It seems for some parents it wasn’t as thought they didn’t want to pay their contributions but just that it was a hassle for them to do this.”Mr. Buckland said the contributions are added into the school budget and spread over different areas of the schools expenditure. At the end of the year students whose families have paid up are given a copy of the school year book with photographs of whanau groups and sports teams. This can

Contact: Greg McNeill T: 4325115 E: [email protected] www.refiningnz.com

Refining NZ is proposing bringing bigger cargoes of crude into Marsden Point to reduce freight costs and improve the refinery’s ability to compete with imported fuels. For this to be possible some harbour dredging and channel realignment may be required.

As part of ongoing consultation Refining NZ is holding the first in a series of ‘drop-in’ information sessions, where the public can talk with environmental and other experts about the studies they will undertake, and give their initial input on the proposal.
