The Big Horn Outdoor Adventure Show introduces one of its newest events:

The Conservation Light Show!

The 52nd Annual Big Horn Outdoor Adventure Show held March 15th-18th at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center is gearing up for the debut of its newest event. For the first time, spectators will be treated to an animated laser light show sponsored by The Inland Northwest Wildlife Council and Dave Smith Motors!

The show will center on the Inland Northwest Wild-life Council’s mission, which is to educate the public about the amazing animals that inhabit our planet, conservation, ethics, and safety. Through laser light, spectators will be able to see wildlife from an entirely new perspective. This surely is a once in a lifetime ex-perience to see and fully understand the beauty, grace, and nature of the animals and their habitat.

The laser light show will be displayed in Bay 4 and will continue all throughout the entire Big Horn Out-door Adventure Show. Each show will last 5-10 min-utes long and will be free to the public.

So come on out to the Big Horn Outdoor Adventure Show March 15th-18th at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center! Show hours are Thursday 12pm-8pm, Friday 12pm-8pm, Saturday 10am-8pm, and Sunday 10am-4pm. Admission is $9 for adults, $8 for seniors, students and military, and children 6 and under are free with an adult. With the purchase of your admis-sion ticket you will receive entry to all four days of The Big Horn Outdoor Adventure Show!

BIRD HOUSE LODGE

Miller Ranch was established in 1886 by Rudolph Miller. From the original 160 acres it has evolved into one of the

largest land holdings in the area.

The combination of pine forests, scablands, swamps, and ponds make the ranch an ideal habitat for deer and migratory waterfowl. In

addition, over a thousand acres has been dedicated game bird habitat.

Waterfowl are abundant during the spring and fall. The lakes and many potholes provide critical nesting habitat for waterfowl species

common to the Pacific Flyway.

Striving to create “The Best In The West” for sportsman, their families and friends.

Some of the Best Trout and Steelhead Fishing in

Central and Eastern WashingtonJack Mitchell / The Evening Hatch

There are a myriad of rivers and streams in Central and Eastern Washington that provide great opportuni-ty for wild trout and steelhead. To cover all watersheds would be difficult in a one hour presentation so the sem-inar will give an overview of three major watersheds. The Yakima - A river for all seasons, The Klickitat - Wild summer run steelhead at its best, The Upper Columbia - One of the best unknowns in the lower 48

The summary on each of the drainages will cover top-ics such as: Best times of the year, Landscapes and pho-tos, Tackle Choices, Foot and Boat Access, Techniques used and insights, Hatches, Regulations and more...

Jack will be presenting this seminar on Thursday 2pm, Friday 5pm, Saturday 2pm, Sunday 2pm.

Booth#88!

By George Lawrence IIII started looking to fill my first Grand Slam back in 2001 after

attending an outdoor sporting show. I had taken only one ram at that time; it was a Dall’s sheep from a hunting trip in Alaska. When I started researching outfitters in Canada for the Stone’s sheep, I found one that challenged me to harvest my Stone’s Ram with black powder. The outfitter also added that he knew of a few rams that could possibly break the world record. For as long as I can recall I have marveled over the largest ram

ever taken in North America; the “Chadwick ram” that just hap-pened to be taken in B.C. and is also a Stone’s sheep. It wasn’t long before my mind was set; I gave the outfitter my deposit and was back home practicing with my black powder Thompson Contender. I made my way to B.C. later that fall with my wife and two sons for a two week excursion. The first few days I can-vassed the area and had been glassing all over the country side with my guide by way of horseback and by foot. I had spied a few nice sized (and legal) rams, but nothing seemed to really fit

the bill. About a week into the trip on one bright

and sunny morning my wife, Kelly, stood in front of the window cleaning up after the morning meal. My youngest son, Ethan, was jumping up and down on the trampoline when Kelly calls out “Uh-oh, the horses got out!” The guide walked over and said, “Those aren’t horses, those are Mountain Caribou!” Ethan, hear-ing this, jumped off the trampoline and grabbed his gun. He set up for his shot and within a few short moments fired and fell one of his three animals to be taken this trip. A day or so later my old-est son, Champ, fell a Boone and Crocket

moose (and would later grace the cover of a hunting magazine.)

As the trip drew to a conclusion, I had not filled my tag. How-ever, we did not leave the hunt empty handed as both of the boys took home an elk, moose and mountain caribou. I had not punched my tag, so the guide allowed me the opportunity to re-

turn six weeks later and try again. On day five, I shot and fell a small one and returned home without my world record ram.

Nine years later I booked a hunt with Yukon Stone Outfitters and made plans to hunt with Mac Watson. I told Mac of my plans to break the world record with black powder. With a shrug he said that it was possible, but there were no guarantees. We set off for the hunt and by day five had found some nice rams, but

I was determined to reach my world record goal and I decided to be extremely picky this go-round. On the sixth day I found a real nice ram but didn’t expect him to be big enough to net me the record. Mac and I decided to make the 1800 foot vertical climb to the ram. We started out on horseback and when the trail became impassable for the horses we continued on foot. We got within approximately 500 yards of three nice rams, but we were pinned down. We would have to wait until the rams moved off a bit before we could attempt to get closer. Finally, the rams moved out of sight and we climbed another 300 vertical feet and then proceeded around the mountain to catch them on the other side where we found them bedded down. After crawling on our hands and knees we were roughly 125 yards from the group. The ram I had my eye on was with three other rams. While spying the ram I had doubts he was big enough to break the world record, but I knew without a doubt he was a magnificent animal with a brilliant coat. In that moment I no longer cared about setting the world record and I set up to make my shot. After what seemed to be a lifetime, the ram finally stood up from his bed, I took aim and pressed the trigger…BOOM!

After the smoked cleared the ram was down; lying in the rocks just below where he had been bedded down just moments before. It is common knowledge amongst hunters, especially in sheep hunting, that there is a phenomenon called “ground shrinkage”. As I got closer, much to my bewilderment, the ram became big-ger! As soon as I put my hands on him I knew he could go the distance in the record books! Hallelujah!

60 days later (after the drying time) he was officially scored. My dream had been realized! My perseverance had paid off and the ram was, in fact, the new world record!

This ram is now on display in the Consumer Auto Liquidators showroom in Airway Heights, Washington….the world record ram is proudly displayed under the “Chadwick Ram.”

Big Horn Exhibits You Won’t Want To Miss

The Big Horn Outdoor Adventure Show is not only filled with exhibitors to cover all of your outdoor (or indoor) needs, but also packed with an array of pop-ular events. New this year will be the Conservation Light Show, an animated laser show displayed in Bay 4, also returning event favorites such as Fishing World, Silvermine, Virtual Fishing, Seminars and Speakers and more. A few of the exhibits you won’t want to miss:

The Great Bear Exhibit Don’t miss your chance to see this exciting exhibit!

The Bear Troupe comes to shows throughout the U.S. and Canada from March to October under the direc-tion of owner/trainer Bob Steele. Established in 1977, this is the OLDEST and LONGEST running wild ani-mal education exhibit in the country. The goal of the exhibit is to provide education as well as enjoyment to the public about these amazing animals. Spectators will get a chance to learn about the bears’ behavior, nature, and intelligence in captivity as well as in the wild. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see and understand these animals.

Trophy TerritoryThis Bay 3 exhibit is how the Big Horn Outdoor Ad-

venture Show got its start over a half century ago. Hunters needed a venue to show off their amazing tro-phies they had conquered throughout the year. In Tro-phy Territory, trophies are judged and awarded in nu-merous categories. There are several different species of mounts and racks, in all shapes, sizes, and counts. There are hundreds on display; it surely is an amazing sight to see!
