beyond. Get involved and

inspired to get growing too.

25 gardens are open throughout the week, showcasing a diverse range of community projects in parks, orchards and forests. Check out three abundant trails across the city with volunteer workdays, activity events, fun days and a pop-up surprise in the city centre!

The Big Dig is a nationalvolunteering project forcommunity food growing. It isfunded by the Cabinet Office’sSocial Action Fund. Six citiesaround England are taking part.The aim is to get thousands ofpeople growing food together.

Take the Bike Train to Apple DayJoin a group cycle ride from the Level to Stanmer Park. All welcome. Check www.biketrain.org for departure times.

Transport to Stanmer ParkBus number 25 regularly goes to the entrance of StanmerPark. At the weekend bus number 78 leaves Brightonhourly and goes directly inside the park to Stanmer Church.There are regular trains from Brighton to Falmer station.

Healthwalk in Stanmer On Sunday 22nd September join a leisurely 3 ½ mile ledwalk exploring Stanmer Park. Meet the walk leader outsidethe tea rooms at 10.45 andfinish the walk with activitiesat Apple Day. www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/healthwalks

Trail 1- The WestBrighton & Hove Organic Gardening

Group – Plots 238 & 239, WealdAllotments, Weald Avenue, HoveBN3 7JNSaturday 21st September 11am – 3pmMeet BHOGG – a group set up toencourage and support organic gardeners inthe local community. Winner of “Best Community Allotment” in thelocal City in Bloom competition in 2010. Talk to the experts andtake a tour in this organic sanctuary. A delight for those with apassion for organic gardening.Bus number 5 and 5a to Old Shoreham Road near WealdAvenue. Aldrington train station is one minute walk away.

North Portslade Community Allotment – 57/58Mile Oak allotments – between Overdown Rise andGorse Close, Portslade BN41 2YXSaturday 21st September 11am – 3pmVisit and get involved in this communal growing space. All agesand abilities welcome – get involved in digging, sowingvegetables, harvesting or learning about nature. The willow domeis especially fun and needs some maintenance, if you would liketo try your hand at willow weaving and tying in.Bus number 1 and 1A to Mile Oak

Plot 22 – Weald Allotments, Weald Ave, Hove, BN3 7JNThursday 19th September 11am – 3pm Garden Thursday (forwomen), Friday 20th September 11am – 3pm Garden Friday(mixed adults)Plot 22 is an allotment garden and peaceful nature space justmoments from the bustle of city living. There will be a range ofgarden tasks to help out with, including harvesting the last of thesummer produce, sowing crops for thewinter and enjoying lunch cooked roundthe fire. Numbers on both sessions arelimited to 10 per group so book inadvance [email protected] number 5 and 5a to the OldShoreham Road near Weald Avenue.Aldrington train station is one minutewalk away.

Trail 2 – The CityDyke Road Community Vegetable

Garden – Dyke Road Park, Dyke Road,Brighton BN3 6EHSaturday 21st September 12pm – 2pmMonthly Munch – “Harvest Shenanigans”.Community picnic in the vegetable garden behindthe tennis courts at the north end of the park.Join in a celebration of the wonderful homegrownfood available in the community. Bring food andanything home-grown to share with neighbours. Thismonth’s theme is ‘Make your own dressing’. Bus numbers 14, 14C, 27 and 77 buses go past the park

Hanover VEG – Hanover Community Centre, 33Southover Street, Brighton BN2 9UDThursday 19th September 2pm – 7pm Community education garden promoting sustainability, growingand sharing. A great example of what can be achieved in a smallurban garden including raised beds, edible walls andcommunity composting. London Road Station Partnership Garden– Shaftesbury Place, Brighton BN1 4QSSaturday 21st September 12.30pm – 4pmA disused area of station ground transformed into abeautiful ornamental site and a lush, productive, organicfood garden open for volunteers and visitors. Activities will involveharvesting raspberries, propagating herbs, admiring and tastingthe first apples from the orchard, late sowing and regular gardenmaintenance.Regular buses to London Road. Harvest Demonstration Garden – Preston Park,Brighton BN1 6HNWednesday 18th September 10am – 1pm Situated just behind the Rotunda Cafe this flourishing garden ispacked with colour, textures, scent and taste. It’s a great resourceto discover the possibilities of growing your own vegetables andfruits and make your space a welcoming place forboth people and wildlife. Come and join in orhave a look round, enjoy the space, get lostin a sea of wildflowers and pick up sometips. Buses 5, 5A, 17, 40, 40X and 273. Train toPreston Park.

One Brighton CommunityGarden – Brighton Junction, IsettaSquare, 35 New England St,Brighton, BN1 4GQThursday 19th September 2.30pm – 5.30pm – Open Day Friday 20th September 3.30pm – 5.30pm – Volunteer Work DayA stone’s throw from Brighton station, this new addition toSeptember’s Big Dig showcases raised beds, herb gardens and amobile orchard! Trail 3 – The EastBevendean Community Garden – just off Heath

Hill Avenue, Bevendean, BN2 4JP, (opposite theschool just before Norwich Drive)Thursday 19th September 9.30am – 1pmSunday 22nd September 1pm – 4pmCommunity run garden with an interest incommunity work, sharing knowledge, andsocialising. Enjoy the beautiful wildlifepond and forest garden. On Thursdaytake part in garlic and onion plantingand a communal lunch from the clayoven. Fork & Dig It – StanmerOrganics. All ages and abilities are welcome to getout of town and spend some time on site in a peaceful locationwithin easy traveling distance from the heart of Brighton. Getinvolved in sowing, planting, digging, netting, harvesting,composting and much more besides. All work is supervised.Bring enthusiasm, sensible clothes and some lunch and enjoylearning to grow at your own pace.

North Laine Community Allotment – On the pathjust before Stanmer Organics, Stanmer Park, BN1 9SESaturday 21st September 11am – 5pmCommunity plot for residents of the North Laine in the beautiful

setting of Stanmer Park. Small friendly plot withlots of growing activities to get stuck into including

building a fruit cage and making paths.

Wonderful medicinal herb garden growing herbs, fruit,vegetables and flowers that promote good health. Discover thishands on garden; join other volunteers in the countryside, have abit of quiet time and learn about natural plant medicines. Stanmer Community Garden Group – Just left ofPlumpton College / Stanmer Offices, Stanmer Park,Falmer BN1 9SEFriday 20th September 11am – 3pmStanmer Community Garden Group will be Big Digging in the yardof the community gardens, by the tool shed, selling pottedshrubs, herbs and seedlings, with jam, cakes, biscuits, tea andcoffee to enjoy. Join a tour of the community gardens at 2pm witha herb and flower identity walk or pick and buy their produce atthe best prices.
