Welcome

Welcome to the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn, the ultimate California Wine Country destination oasis!

Big data technologies and practices are moving quickly. Companies are now able to organize, analyze and derive value from millions of rows of data that, just a few years ago, would have been meaningless. But where is big data headed in 2016 and beyond?

To stay ahead of the game, we have strategically crafted an agenda that incorporates Arrow, supplier and industry speakers to address the big data marketplace, emerging trends, and innovative solutions to help you capitalize on new opportunities and position your company for growth.

Over the next few days, we encourage you to interact with fellow reseller professionals, as well as with the most influential and knowledgeable channel resources the industry has to offer. Our goal is to inspire new strategies around growth and transformation, as well as provide an understanding of how Arrow will support you along the way.

We appreciate your business and partnership, and look forward to hosting you at Arrow’s Third Annual Big Data Symposium!

Best regards

Timothy Chou, PhD Lecturer, Stanford University

Timothy Chou, PhD has been lucky enough to have a career spanning academia, successful (and not so successful) startups and large corporations. He was one of only a few people to hold the President title at Oracle. As President of Oracle On Demand, he grew the cloud business from its very beginning. Today that business is over $2B. He wrote about the move of applications to the cloud in 2004 in his first book, “The End of Software.” Today he serves on the board of Blackbaud, a nearly $700M vertical application cloud service company.

After earning his PhD in EE at the University of Illinois he went to work for Tandem Computers, one of the original Silicon Valley startups. He’s invested in and been a contributor to a number of other startups, like WebEx, and others you’ve never heard of but were sold to companies like Cisco and Oracle. Today he is focused on several new ventures in cloud computing, machine learning and the Internet of Things.

Finally, he was lucky enough to be able to start teaching at Stanford University in 1982. He taught introductory computer architecture for fifteen years and only stopped because one day he had to fly to Bali, do a sales kickoff and fly back in 24 hours to teach class. Since leaving Oracle he returned to Stanford to create first course on cloud computing, CS309A.stanford.edu. Not only has he lectured at many major universities, but also delivered keynote speeches on all six continents.

Building Massive and Efficient Indexer Storage Environments for Splunk

Splunk is awesome. It’s even more awesome with more data. But all that data can be tough to keep cost-effectively in your Splunk environment, especially with indexer and/or multi-site clustering. Well, at least that was the case before now. Today, some of the largest Splunk customers globally are choosing to implement storage environments that provide enterprise-class data services to store indexes more efficiently, protect that data more effectively, and ensure compliance with the growing body of regulations around data. During this session, we will explore the value of the emergence of scale-out, all-flash storage appliances with inline deduplication and massively scaled-out clustered files system appliances when used for the Indexer storage; and we will also discuss how storage-based services for storage deduplication, data protection, compliant retention, and encryption can solve enterprise IT challenges while making Splunk performance absolutely scream! As a bonus for existing EMC customers, we’ll also introduce you to the suite Apps in the Splunk Marketplace for monitoring your EMC storage appliances. These free applications provide powerful dashboards and reports to monitor the health and performance of your EMC storage environment right in your Splunk Enterprise console.

Fortinet Presenter: Anthony Giandomenico Senior Security Strategist - Office of the CTO, Fortinet

RIOT Control: Managing Risk and the Internet of Things (RIOT)

The Internet of Things is penetrating all industries and offering new service-delivery opportunities and operational benefits. This discussion will look at some of the risks in IoT in the context of use-cases from several industry verticals, and the emerging requirements and techniques for IoT security available to users and service providers. IoT device makers, users, service providers, and regulators face many security challenges. The situation right now related to IoT security is dire and probably going to get worse. Devices are made quickly and cheaply, often failing to take security into account. At the same time, conventional Enterprise IT networks are not designed or tuned to protect IoT services and devices. But there are ways to identify risks associated with security and safety in the IoT and treat or transfer these risks using an array of new technologies and security designs.

Most data worth analyzing contains sensitive information, whether it is employee records, customer data, intellectual property, etc. In this session, VMware will walk through the security value of a micro-segmentation architecture, as well as the agility of a Software Defined Data Center in the era of big data and multi-cloud.

Arrow SAM Project

Arrow Electronics set out to modify a car to be safely driven at speed by head movements for a quadriplegic race driver. In less than a year, we turned an impossible dream into reality. We modified a car—a 2014 Corvette C7 Stingray—so a qualified quadriplegic driver can safely operate it under racetrack conditions. We call it the Semi-Autonomous Motorcar, better known as SAM.
