Big Data Analytics

Why do I call it “renaissance of analytics” and 3 reasons it is here to

stay

#1 - We have been doing Big Data Analytics before Big Data was Big Data. (And will continue to do so)

1990s – Teradata ruled the market

2000 – Doug Laney defines volume velocity and variety

Early-mid 2k – MPP, shared nothing

Mid-late 2K enter Hadoop

#2 – To analyse or not – that is not the question anymore

Big Data is not the created content, nor is it even its consumption — it is the analysis of all the data surrounding or swirling around it’

"We expect the challenging economic backdrop to persist, but by helping our customers to Live Well For Less through competitive pricing, targeted promotions, quality own label products, and outstanding customer service, we are positioned to perform well coming into the important Christmas period.“ – Justin King, CEO, J Sainsbury’s

Leaders are differentiating themselves by the help of extremely clever analytics – Sainsbury’s roaring success of “Coupon-at-till” has outperformed Tesco’s flagship Dunhumby led analytics

So?

• The 14th century witnessed the beginning of the transitional movement in Europe between medieval and modern times - Renaissance. Renaissance did not invent art and culture. People were creating paintings and sculptures even before, in the medieval times. But what Renaissance did was the revival of the classical influence of art and literature (pre dominantly) on human life.

• Big Data Analytics, on similar lines, is reviving the age old data analytics world, is triggered by modern science and some extremely clever technology. Its disruptive forces, ironically, are non intrusive and its effect on business is immensely rich.
