Benny Goodman, also known as the “King of Swing”, was one of 12 children born and raised in Chicago. He studied and played the clarinet as a young boy which soon got him famous.
Fletcher Henderson, Hired by Goodman as an arranger and while working in New York, got a band together and started playing.
Duke Ellington, Piano music won him over, and his first known composition was the “Soda Fountain Rag” of 1914.
Louis Armstrong, Born in poverty and became one of century’s greatest entertainers. He survived on tips as a street performer in New Orleans, and soon began playing the drums and got attracted to horn instruments such as the Trumpet.
Billie Holiday: ALso called “Lady Day”. Performed in brooklyn which got her noticed by many producers/critics such as John Hammond.
