Big animals, small napsBy AFP, adapted by Newsela staff

How much do elephants sleep? Scientists wanted to find out. They did a study on two elephants in the wild.

The study showed something surprising. Wild elephants do not sleep much. They snooze for only two hours a night! That is not much sleep at all.

Elephants sleep less than any other mammal, the scientists said. Mammals are a group of animals. Whales and monkeys are mammals. So are dogs, cats and people.

People sleep about 8 hours a night. That is too many hours for an elephant.

The wild elephants live in Africa. Scientists put trackers on the elephants. One tracker went on their trunks. It sensed when the elephants moved. The other tracker went around their necks. It tracked where they went. The scientists tracked what the elephants did for a month.
