    Celebrating 75 Yea

The 2010 camp season is off to a bang, as both old andnew Woodseys alike gear up for the many upcoming

events, training meetings, socials, and fundraisers thatwill build empowered student volunteers and createlifelong memories. UniCamps 75th year promises tobe a truly special one, not only becoming stronger inWoodsey tradition, but also developing new venues forgrowth, fun and volunteer participation. What, you mayask, is going on in UniCamp?

One of the best additions to this year of camp has beenthe creation of completely new fundraising events withinthe Classic Camp, W.A.L.L. and UniCorps programs. 2009ended with the premiere of UniCause, a Christmas timefundraiser during which student volunteers assisted ourvery own resident Santa Clause in spreading holidaycheer at the Paseo Colorado in Pasadena. Woodseys, dressed as elves, put on different activities for kids of allages in order to fundraise for the camp season that wasabout to begin. These activities ranged from photos withSanta to ginger bread house making and gift wrapping. All of the proceeds from UniCause went directly to camp.It was such a great way to raise money to support camp, while at the same time creating a magical holiday cheerfor so many kids! said Lidia Jujubees Luong, UniCampsAlumni Relations and Special Events Coordinator.

The beginning of the Older Camper Programs, W.A.L.L.and UniCorps in January brought with it brand newfundraising/social events. UniCorps put on the rst everLaser Tag Tournament, bringing in over 200 guests fromdifferent UCLA student organizations and friends ofWoodseys. The incredibly fun and competitive eventwas able to raise over $1500 while providing teamsthe opportunity to play multiple games of laser tag ata much discounted rate. W.A.L.L. hosted one last nightof celebrating the 2009 camp season with its SadieHawkins Dance. Over 150 guests came dressed in their

favorite decades styles ranging from newsboys of theroaring 20s, to hippies and ower children of the 70s,

to the brightly colored clothing and side-ponytails ofthe 80s. Kyle They Yamamoto, one of the W.A.L.L.Program Directors, said the dance was a nostalgicand fun call to everyones high school days and such anawesome way to get people back in the spirit of campseason. Both events were hits and provided a strongfoundation of early Winter Quarter fundraisers forfuture years.

The return of warm weather and students from SpringBreak marked the ofcial start of the 2010 UniCampseason. The seven new leadership teams have beenworking non-stop to teach new and old volunteers howto sing songs, play games, and become true Woodseys. While camp has grown to over 60 volunteers persession, Leadership teams have also expanded to 5members to adequately support all their counselors andspecialists. Spring training is well under way, and alongwith it- retreats, all-camp meeting, and socials. May willbe an action-packed month, full of camp eventstargeting both Alumni and current Woodseys. Camp-A-Thon, the LA Festival of Books, UCLA Alumni Day, andthe traditional OCP fundraisers- WALLs BasketballTournament, Fus, RoShamBo, and Woodsey Prom are allup and coming.Alongside some new fundraising eventssuch as UniCourts; UniCorps dodgeball tournament, andSand Castles; an event for all ambitious sandartichitects, sessions will have a myriad of chances tohave fun, bond, meet other Woodseys, and best of all-send more kids to camp this summer.

Leadership, OCP, and Classic Camp cant wait get thespirit of summer 2010 started early. Join in on the funand support UniCamp this year at any and all of theupcoming events. See you there, Woodseys!

Hey, hey, listen up, listen up! Every year, UniCampbecomes bigger and better, and these past coupleyears are no exception. From a rock climbing wall tocabins with built-in BIFFYs, camp facilities haveexpanded to give all Woodseys an even more magicalexperience. On site at Camp River Glen in the SanBernadino Mountains new additions over the past twoyears have added more thrills, comforts, and, yes, evengreater sanitation to the Woodsey home. Across theAlpine Tower a new rock climbing wall has been putin place with donations from the memorial fund of JayLeanse, a former UniCamp volunteer. This wallfunctions as a great complement to the Alpine ClimbingTower. The climbing tower is ideally for ages 12+,while the climbing wall is intended for campers aged10 12, Mr. Woooo explains. This will work into ourprogressive programming plan which will have new

attractions for campers as they grow older.Other additions within the last couple years includethe dishwash-sanitizing room behind the lodge, whichUniCamp bought to comply with health and safetyrevisions, and new activity equipment for both landand water. Stored in the Bike Yard next to Cloud Nine,a plethora of mountain bikes purchased from anothercamp await their riders. These bikes, acquired inhopes of adding to the variety of activities camperscan enjoy, will be part of a future hike-and-bikeprogram. The kids will hike somewhere, have lunch, then mountain bike back to camp, explains Mr.

Woooo. He also spoke of the sailing possibilities thatare becoming a reality on the waters of Big Bear Lake.Currently Pops allows camp to use the sailboats heowns and UniCamp pays for their maintenance, opening up exciting new opportunities for campers. In the future, when 16 or more cabins are on site, thecamp will run into an issue of many more campersoccupying the same amount of campsite space. Sailingwill allow units to have programs offsite, thusalleviating some of the onsite trafc.

Cabin construction and renovation is another majorcamp addition. Any Woodsey who has set foot in whatused to be the old cabins these past couple yearsknows the world of difference that cabin renovationsare making up at Camp River Glen. With built-in-B.I.F.F.Y.s, late night cross-camp bathroom runs have

become a thing of the past, and those ever-so-covetedshowers make it easier for campers to stay clean andfresh - especially before long-awaited camp dances. These cabins have been reinforced with new wood andsandblasted to resemble the more modern models, complements of The Wildlands Conservancy, whichdonated $500,000 toward the expansion of the CampRiver Glen Campsite thus increasing [camps] capacityand increasing the amount of people [UniCamp]can bring into nature every summer, says Mr. Woooo.According to Pops, four additional cabins are on thehorizon, awaiting the $30,000 needed to cover eachof their building costs.

Other programs of an even wider scale are similarlycoming to fruition in the San Bernadino Mountains. Onesuch operation with a promising agenda is the highschool leadership program known last year as SummitBlue and Summit Gold and this year as Session 6and Session 7. Inspired by a similar older-camperprogram that took place ve or six years ago, theSummit Sessions work with an after school enrichmentprogram called Beyond the Bell to provide a

leadership program for high school students. Thedemographic of campers is the same as those whotraditionally attend Classic Camp - the kids are simplyolder. According to Pops, many UCLA volunteers ndthis an incredible experience because as high schoolersthe campers are old enough to recognize what a col-

lege student leader has to offer. It allows the campersto get an essence of what a college student is,something that is difcult to grasp from only theexplanations of school counselors or teachers, saysPops. Understanding who a college student is and whatdedication he/she embodies is key to making decisionsabout college, especially for kids confronting greatsocioeconomic hurdles in their futures. Thats why this isspecial, explains Pops. It reaches out to touch the livesof these kids so much that past campers have remarkedthat if they had not attended UniCamp they probablywould not have even tried to attend college. The highschool program works with the Los Angeles UniedSchool District as a jumpstart session for school-yearplanning. It has many of the same programs as the age10-14 camp, but also incorporates new challenges andsets the stage for campers and counselors to remain incontact during the school year. Through this programwere not rewarding kids for having gone to anotheryear at school: were investing in what these kids aregoing to do next, says Pop. The return, he reveals, ishigher education.

The other large program joining the UniCamp operationis Camp Woodsey for Kids, a program partnering withThe Wildlands Conservancy at the site of Camp Bluff

Lake. According to the camp website, their mission isto preserve the beauty and biodiversity of the earth, and provide programs so that children may know thewonder and joy of nature. While operating basedon the structure of UniCamps Classic Camp program,Camp Woodsey will provide more of a John Muirexperience, explains Pops. The 30-acre lake andsurrounding wilderness provide for different kinds ofprogramming and hikes aimed at getting back into thesimplicity of nature. This camp, while providing a funand unique experience for its campers, also serves asa fundraiser for UniCamp programs so that for everyfew kids who attend Camp Woodsey enough funds areraised to send another camper to UCLA UniCamp. Theprogram runs from Sunday evening to Friday afternoonand costs $875 per camper. Volunteers are currentUniCamp volunteers and UniCamp alumni who want tocontinue their camp leadership. Additional programssuch as Family Weekends are also available on this sitewhere families, departments from campus, or group

reunions are invited to rent cabins for a Friday-Sundayvacation at a rate of $175 per adult and $50 perchild. Together, Camp Woodsey for Kids and FamilyWeekends will serve to raise money to send more LosAngeles area kids to UniCamp each year. We turnover every rock we possibly can to nd more funds forkids to go to camp, explained Pops when asked whatinspired these new programs. UniCamp used to holdvarious fundraisers like golf tournaments in the past, butwhat the UniCamp staff understands best is camping. Theorganization, under Pops supervision, has decided torely on its 75 years of camp experience to use one formof camping as means to provide funding for another.

So what do all these new additions to sites andprogramming mean for UniCamp? More opportunities, greater possibilities, and an even more exciting futurefor campers and counselors! As the organizationsvisions become reality more kids may experience campwhere their own dreams are encouraged to bloom intoa promising future.

Q: How has camp changed since you rststarted going?A: Camp changed a lot from when I rst

started because I got older and I started tounderstand things more. I learned how to putaway my differences with people and justcome together. UniCamp to me now meanscoming together and forming peace, love, unity and having fun. I remember when thebridge used to be made of wood!

    FEATUREDCAMPER

My Camping Experience was extraordinary.Being away from home for a week feels good becauseIm surrounded by new people who are all unique intheir own way. A week in the open forest isbeautiful. I always second guessed this becausebeing away from technology for a week soundedlike it would be horrible: no T.V, computer, phone andof course being away from our loved ones. But I waswrong about that. It feels refreshing to be away fromdrama which all teens have a problem with, not tomention helping out the forest and cleaning it up feelsgood. Being role models to the younger units feelsgood, too. UniCamp always leaves me going home

with great memories, not to mention when its time togo home I always feel sentimental I have to leaveeveryone. Nevertheless, I love being around all of theUCLA students who are very good role models andvery good people who will motivate you to go tocollege and have a future like never before.

When asked what the most important thing he learnedfrom Unicamp is he responded: Unity and teamwork.

We cant think of a better example of an amazingcamper and fellow Woodsey!

It is Thursday night at camp and excitement levelsare high. One hour until the Talent Show begins, ourcampers are bustling around the lodge, putting upbanners, rehearsing lines, and making sure the playl-ist on the iPod matches the show order list they havecreated. Some are too nervous to do anything, andjust wait. I stand to the side with my fellow UniCorpsadvisors and observe the scene, feeling nerves of my

own. Most campers take this talent show very seriously, and for many of them this is their rst time on stagebefore an audience of over 150 people. If a campersmusic stops midway through the act, a potentially lifechanging moment could be ruined. If the show runs toolong, the entire camp will suffer for it. My co-advisorsand I had decided that it would be best to leave all ofthese concerns up to the UniCorps campers. The worstcase scenario was that they would do a mediocre joband feel disappointed, but the idea of them rising tothe occasion and having the experience of being fullyresponsible for the shows success was worth the risk ofsome disappointment.

For those of you who are not familiar, UniCorps is oneof the Older Camper Programs (OCP) at UniCamp. These high school aged campers work throughout theweek at camp on service-learning projects includingcampsite maintenance, leading activities in youngercamper units, and, this past year, putting on the campTalent Show. It was their job to organize all the acts, prepare the music, MC the show, make banners, etc.

We had given them the majority of the afternoonto nish preparing for the show, and from our end itlooked as though the majority of the group wasmessing around, enjoying the unscheduled time whileonly a few people were scrambling to do all the work.We encouraged them to all be working together forthe sake of efciency, but held back our ideas abouthow things should be donethis was their time to shine.

Twenty minutes before show time campers and counsel-ors began ling into the lodge. I felt my controlling selfwanting to double check that UniCorps had everythingunder control, that everyone was in the right place,

There are many takes on the clich that it feels betterto help others than it does to help ones self. Howeverthe reason its clich is because so many people havecome to feel that way. That is what camp has taughtme. Heres an example:

In camp it can get pretty hot, so swimming is a favoredactivity by many campers. One day my adopted unitwas going to the pool. Everyone was super stoked, butone little girl was sitting to the side. She sat there, star-ing at all the other kids cooling down on the hot summerday. Maybe she couldnt swim, I thought. However, as

it turns out, swimming was one of her favorite things todo. I inquired as to why she wasnt swimming. She was abit hesitant to her answer, but she nally revealed: shejust started her period for the rst time ever. For someone to completely trust me with one of themost terrifying things in a girls life... I felt pretty rad. I calmed her down, and we gured out a way for herto go in the water. She thanked me whole heartedly! Itfelt good to be there for someone.

and people were organized to run through the showsmoothly, but I took a deep breath and let go of all myconcerns. I glanced at my co Buttercup, who was sittingnext to me, and she gave me a look that said exactlywhat I was thinking. We didnt have any idea whatthey had planned, but we knew it was not our job tomanage, so we both sat back, ready to enjoy the show.

I think it is probably pretty obvious where this is going. The show was a huge success, and I was truly blownaway by how well it ran and how strategically the actswere placed. That alone probably would not haveprompted me to write this story though. It was Desire, who had seemed bored and underwhelmed all week, condently cracking jokes in front of the entire campwith a huge smile on her face. It was Star Baller, whowas always trying to get out of work and refused totake anything seriously, taking the lead in planning andmaking sure that every person had a role in one of the

skits. It was Eagle, the quietest and youngest one in thegroup, overcoming his nerves and taking on a speakingrole in the show. It was the looks on all of their facesduring the nal applause. It was each one of themsurprising themselves with what they were individuallycapable of, and the entire group surprising us, theadvisors, with how well they were able to worktogether. It was their ability to inspire the youngercampers and show them what can be accomplished ifthey are willing to take on the challenge.

That night, during our debrief one of the girls in ourgroup, Winter, told everyone that she had never feltso successful in her life. She told us that she had notbelieved they were capable of successfully working asa team to put on a show for the entire camp, and nowthat she had done so, she felt as though she could doanything. For me, that is Woodsey Magic.

If your co Veggie could be invisible for one day, whatwould they do and why?So um, if Veggie was invisible for a day...getting readyfor 1st week meeting would probably be preeetty tough.

Wed pretty much start freaking out if we lost our co...and Im pretty sure that shed probably mess with us alittle bit, running around the hallways of the URC sing-ing Hey Burrito! and wed probably think that the URCwas haunted or something like that. And then shed listenin on the conversations that the three of her other coswere having about her, trying to see what kind of dirttheyve been talking about her, but then shed be TOTALLYrelieved because they pretty much love her to death andhave nothing but good things to say about her :). Otherthan that, life would be pretty normal outside the factwed have to explain to the rest of session 7 that Veggiewas invisible at 1st week meeting.-DJ

If the whole world were listening or watching, what wouldyour co Kuponut say or do and why?Kuponut would say, Uh Oh! while simultaneously doing apeace sign on each hand and bringing them on both sidesof her face! Kind of like this: v ^__^ v !!!-Polka Dot

If your co They could eat one food for the rest of his life, what would he choose?Sockos Subs-Froyo

If your co Froyo could live on a different planet, whichwould he choose and why?Froyo would choose the planet of Endor so he could bearwitness to the pivotal turning point in the great battle

between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire, ending years of struggle, which tore the universe apart. Here he would be able to ght alongside the brave andhonorable Ewoks, Han Solo and Leia. Though they areinitially overwhelmed by the Empire, Luke Skywalker suc-ceeds in destroying the Death Star only moments before itdestroyed the planet of Endor. Froyo would then party thenight away with the Ewoks in their treehouses.-They

If a day had 25 hours, what would your co Filet o Fish dowith the extra hour and why?On any given normal day, Filet o Fish can be found mak-ing creative gifts and planning surprises for the peopleshe cares about. If a day had an additional 25th hour, these gifts and surprises would go beyond to becomewhat many would consider to be impossible. She wouldmake 346 tiger eyes but only need 345 marbles, plan 7retreats that are all under budget and will end upkeeping their deposits, organize 14 fundraisers - one ofwhich alone will eliminate the national debt, bake 18dozen cupcakes that are moist and uffy but low in fat, write 6 new camp songs, and lastly just for fun, develop

a fool proof strategy to win the roshambo tournament. This may seem impossible to those who do not know Filet oFish personally. But to her close friends and family, we allknow that she is only an hour shy of theseaccomplishments. -Legend

If your co Legend could be any Disney princess, whichwould they be and why?Hed be Jasmine because she has the biggest booty. Notthat i look at his booty...hes like a little brother to me.- Filet

My friendMichelle (who didnt end up doing camp) gave me thename because I fence for the UCLA fencing team andwell, Touch is fencing terminology

We were looking for names that are cleverand unique to the individual, and maybehave an interesting or personal story behindit. The BiffE Breeze staff looked through a

Q: What does/has camp meant to you? Has it helpedyou grow or change in any way?A: Camp has made itself into a HUGE part of my life.I dont know what kind of attitude towards life I wouldhave had if it wasnt for the amazing HCs, fellow coun-selors, and OF COURSE the kids. Its a special type ofcrowd that is drawn towards UniCamp (both counselorsand kids), and that kind of environment is non-existentanywhere else. Basically, its its own little world.
