THIS booklet is not designed to tell how to treat or diag-nose disease. Diagnosis of disease and medical treatment

require painstaking examination, judgment and observationof the patient. These procedures are the prerogative of thelicensed physician.

Anyone will take care of poor health, but it is the wiseman who makes every effort to conserve good health. Every-one should check up on his physical status yearly by havinga thorough physical examination by his family physician.

On many occasions when only a household remedy isneeded, or during the interval of time between when a.physician is called and when he arrives, bicarbonate of soda(Baking Soda) is of practical value, and we have set forthin this booklet a few uses which time, trial and experiencehave proved effective.

five years we have concentrated on improving our productand making it available at low cost. Today Arm & Hammer

Bicarbonate of soda (Baking Soda) probably has MOST USEDmore uses in medicine than any other drug, but it DRUGis for use in the great many cases which do not require thepersonal services of a physician that these pages are written.

The standard for all drugs is the United StatesPharmacopoeia, which sets up certain specificationsfor physical properties, potency and purity. Arm& Hammer Baking Soda and Cow Brand BakingSoda are both pure bicarbonate of soda, meeting all therequirements of the U.S.P. XI. BICARBONATE OF SODAAS A REMEDY

SODIUM BICARBONATEU.S.P., Bicarbonate of DESCRIPTIONSoda, Arm & Hammer Baking Soda and Cow Brand

Baking Soda are identical. Sodium Bicarbonate is describedin "Useful Drugs", a publication prepared under the direc-tion of the American Medical Association, as a white opaquepowder, odorless and having a cooling, mildly alkaline taste;soluble in ten parts of water, insoluble in alcohol.

Its uses are: Internally - gastro-intestinal affec- USEStions, especially gastric hyperacidity (over-acidity of thestomach); pyrosis (heartburn); acidosis; rheumatism;biliousness; gout; hiccough; vomiting; peptic ulcer; cystitis(inflammation of the bladder) ; urinary hyperacidity (over-acidity of the urine) : Externally-as a cleansing wash ininfections, urticaria (hives), and other skin diseases; in apaste of soda and water for burns and scalds; as a cleansinggargle and nose spray for sore throat and chronic catarrh;as a dentifrice.

The ordinary dosage internally is one-half tea- DOSAGEspoonful in a glass or half-glass of cool water. The usual

a friend indeed ...strength for applications to mucous membranes such as thenose and throat, is one teaspoonful in a glass of water. Tothe skin, in varying strengths, from two teaspoonfuls in thepint of water to a paste.

nally, but in the stomach it has other functions besides thatof neutralizing acid, because it relieves pain in low acidityor complete absence of acid, which would be impossible ifit had no other effect than to neutralize acid." - Bastedo,"Materia Medica, Pharmacology and Therapeutics", 3rdEd., p. 118.

IMPROVES "The effect of moderate doses on the stomachDIGESTION varies with the state of the organ." Solis-Cohen &

Githens, "Materia Medica & Drug Action", p, 519. If thestomach is empty, it increases the circulation and the secre-tion of gastric juice. The increased flow of blood may leadto better, nutrition and if a meal is taken soon after, thereis often -increased secretion of both pepsin and hydrochloricacid. Digestion may be improved, also, by the removal ofadherent mucus.

If bicarbonate of soda is given with the meal in ordinarydoses, it has no influence on the amount of acid secreted,but if taken in very large doses, it may prevent peptic diges-tion by rendering the stomach contents alkaline.

· .. a friend indeedBicarbonate of soda in moderate doses by mouthhas no effect upon the blood when the acids andalkalies are in balance. However, when the alka-linity of the blood is decreased, as it may be in acidosis,Baking Soda assists in restoring and maintaining the nor-mal balance.

HELPS MAINTAINCHEMICAL BALANCE

OF BLOOD

The urine is increased by taking bicarbonate of OVER-ACID URINEsoda and its acidity reduced. If daily amounts of two tothree teaspoonfuls are given to a normal person, enoughwill be excreted as carbonates to keep the urine neutral oralkaline in reaction. Normally the urine is acid and whetheror not this should be altered should rest with the judgmentof your physician.

"Externally, bicarbonate of soda is used in baths,lotions and irrigations of various kinds, as cleans-ing, alleviating and stimulating agents." - Solis-Cohen & Githens, "Materia Medica and Drug Action",p. 520. In the strength of one to two teaspoonfuls to a pintof water, bicarbonate of soda (Baking Soda) is f14quentlyemployed to wash the stomach, irrigate the intestines, as anasal douche, an eye wash, nose or throat spray.

GARGLE,NOSE SPRAY,

EYE WASH

As a paste or in solution it is used to allay itching. ITCHINGBicarbonate of soda baths, made with one-half to one poundof Baking Soda to thirty gallons of water, are recom-

a friend indeed ...mended. The patient remains immersed for thirty minutes.When the affection is less widespread, similar applicationsmay be made locally. Should the alkaline bath be irritating,a weaker solution should be used.

FETID BODY Similar treatment is advised in cases of bromidrosisODORS (foul perspiration) of the feet or axillae (under

arms), and fetid body odors.

BURNS, SCALDS, Sodium bicarbonate (saturated solution, powderSUNBURN or thick paste) is one of the best applications to

sunburn and other burns, and may allay the pain of certainforms of dermatitis (inflammation of the skin).

"For first-aid treatment of superficial scalds and burns,a paste prepared by mixing Baking Soda and water may beused: The possible necessity of competent medical care inthe treatment of burns of even minor degree should alwaysbe considered." (Council on Pharmacy and Chemistry,A.M.A.)

Fantus, "The Technic of Medication", p. 46, recom-mends using Baking Soda as a first-aid dressing to burns,by applying it liberally in the form of a paste made withBaking Soda and water. The paste should be kept moistwith application of wet cloths. He also recommends BakingSoda solution in the strength of one teaspoonful to the glassof water as a nasal spray and gargle, and also as an enemain the strength of one to two teaspoonfuls to the pint ofwater. "The Technic of Medication", p. 109.

· .. a friend indeedBastedo, in discussing "Antacids in Stomach Treat- STOMACH PAINSment", "Materia Medica, Pharmacology and Therapeu-tics", p. 117-121, says, "The stomach conditions for whichalkalies are employed are discomfort, distress, or pain. Painwhen the stomach is full or pain when it is empty; paincoming early after the meal or pain coming late. There istruth in the old saying that 'sodium bicarbonate has stoppedmore stomach pains than morphine'. The time to give thealkali is at the time of the pain, or before the expected onsetof the pain, should it recur at regular times of the day."

Bicarbonate of soda (Baking Soda) is recorn- INDIGESTIONmended by Solis-Cohen & Githens, "Materia Medica &Drug Action", p. 522, for acute indigestion and other con-ditions associated with irritation of the stomach lining,especially in cases with acute acidity and sour stomach, be-cause it has the advantage of setting free small quantitiesof carbonic acid gas, which exerts a distinctly helpful influ-ence. In cases of over-acidity, it is recommended to neutral-ize the excessive acid and in these cases it is best to give ittwo or three hours after a meal, in doses of one-third toone-half teaspoonful, which may be repeated if needed torelieve the distress of the over-acidity.

Discussing the remedies used to neutralize acidityin the stomach, Clendening, "Methods of Treat-ment", 5th Ed., p. 140, says: "Sodium Bicarbonateis probably the most effective. It has been stated that its use

a friend indeed ...in over-acidity is harmful because after it neutralizes theacid gastric juice, it stimulates the stomach to the secretionof more acid. So good a pharmacologist as Cushny, how-ever, rejects this idea, and states that the alkalies have noinfluence on the gastric secretion. Certainly in clinical prac-tice it acts effectively."

"THE ALKALINE Systemic alkalization, by taking some alkaline sub-SIDE" stance, is popular with the public but definitely of

questionable value. If alkalization is indicated, your physi-cian will advise you. A simple method is to take one-halfteaspoonful of Baking Soda with a glass of water everyhour or two until the urine becomes neutral or alkaline,and then simply enough to maintain its neutrality or alka-linity, depending on your physician's advice.

LAXATIVE On some people Baking Soda has no effect uponthe motility of the bowels, but on others, it has a salinelaxative action, particularly if taken in the morning beforeeating. The usual dose is one teaspoonful in a glass of waterbefore breakfast.

It is important to remember that physics or catharticsshould not be taken when pain exists in the bowels; appen-dicitis might be the cause of the discomfort, and it is alwayssafer to call a physician whenever pain occurs.

WAX IN THE EAR For the removal of wax from the ear, low pressure

"In the taking of aspirin, in order to avoid the ill SODA WITHeffects to which some people are susceptible, it is ASPIRIN

advisable to take twice the dosage of Baking Soda as aspi-rin." Beckman, "Treatment in General Practice", 2nd Ed.,p.708.

In reducing diets, where the food intake is reduced OBESITYand there is considerable loss of weight with a tendencytoward acidosis, Sansum recommends the use of one-fourthteaspoonful of Baking Soda three times a day to preventacidosis.

Hirschman, Hanes & Beckman, "Treatment in ENEMAGeneral Practice", p. 434, condemn the much-used soapsuds as an enema and colon flush. As a routine enema, it isrecommended that one teaspoonful of Baking Soda to thepint of water be used.

In a general way, Baking Soda is advantageous in CLEANSINGthe treatment of leucorrhea, especially if the dis- DOUCHE

charge has an acid reaction. Use it freely as a cleansingdouche in the strength of two teaspoonfuls dissolved in apint of warm water.

a friend indeed ...IVY POISONING For ivy poisoning, wash the affected parts thor-

oughly with laundry soap and hot water, then apply a pastemade from Baking Soda and water, and cover with a dampcloth. The Soda paste should be replaced every eight to tenhours.

INSECT BITES Baking Soda, either in solution or paste, is a sooth-ing application for insect bites, superficial burns and theitching of hives.

WEED POISONING The smarting, burning and itching of the skin fromcontact with certain weeds may be relieved by applying apaste made from Baking Soda and water. The paste shouldbe covered with a damp cloth.

HICCOUGH For hiccough, dissolve one-half teaspoonful ofArm & Hammer Baking Soda or Cow Brand Baking Soda(bicarbonate of soda) in one-half glass of cold water anddrink slowly. This will, in many cases, give prompt andpermanent· relief.

CATARRH Chronic discharges from the nose may be relievedby spraying the nostrils night and morning with a solutionof Soda water (one teaspoonful Baking Soda to a pint ofwater). This has the effect of cleaning mucus and accumu-lations from the nostrils.

tion of baby food should be sterilized by boiling once daily.After the bottle and nipple have been used, they should bewashed thoroughly with soap and hot water, and allowedto stand in soda water (two teaspoonfuls of Baking Sodato a quart of water). Before feedings, the nipple and thebottle should be rinsed with clear water.

TOOTH decay is probably the most prevalent disease condi-tion found in man. Without doubt, it is the commonest

of diseases of the mouth. The cause of dental decay is notat present definitely established. Evolutional heredity wouldseem to have a bearing upon tooth formation. The diet ofthe mother during the prenatal period, and the diet of thechild in early life have been shown to be important factorsin the building of strong healthy teeth, and no doubt thestructure of the tooth has much to do with resisting decay.

It is the opinion of many scientists that the primary c~useof decay is found in the mouth. The cavity results from theaction of acid produced by acid forming micro-organismsgrowing on the surfaces of the teeth. Certain foods, partic-ularly sugar, encourage the growth of these acid formingmicro-organisms and the production of acids, hence the im-portance of reducing the sugar intake to the body require-ment and permitting no excess of candy or sweet dessertsin the diet of those who are susceptible to caries. Just whysome individuals are immune to tooth decay is not known,but it may be an inherited characteristic inhibiting thegrowth of these acid forming micro-organisms.

It must be remembered that teeth are living tissues andcan be affected by both local and constitutional disturb-ances. When they are looked upon as parts of the living or-ganism, not detached units, more attention willbe given thegeneral health' as a preventive measure against dental ills.

Oral hygiene is of importance in the prevention of dis-eases of the mouth, and cleanliness of the teeth is an essen-tial part of oral hygiene. Germs require, for their growthand multiplication, warmth, moisture, and food. In somemouths, they find a virtual paradise. In nonresistant bodiesthey may tend to destroy the teeth, infect the gums, thetonsils, the stomach, and other parts of the body.

Thorough and frequent brushing of the teeth withan approved dentifrice, followed by rinsing, willimprove oral hygiene by dislodging and washing awaythe food and debris upon which these germs live.
