    What is Bibliotherapy?

Simply stated, Bibliotherapy can be de ned as the use of books to help

people solve problems, it u lizes books as a therapeu c tool. Can be in-

corporated into a treatment program and can even become an integral

    part of treatment.

    Books

Highly Recommended - Alderman, Tracy (1997) The scarred soul: Understanding and end-ing self -in icted violence , New Harbinger Publica ons, U.S . – Review: This step -by-step guideis designed to help vic ms of self -in icted violence understand why they feel the need to hurtthemselves and to take steps to change their behaviour. Most vic ms tend to be teenage girls orwomen in their twen es. To hurt themselves is some mes a way of focusing and controllingoverwhelming feelings of chaos. I didn't really have high hopes for this book, I couldn't imagine

how a er years of self harming a book could make much di erence. How wrong and ignorant I was! I found this bookamazing it really does provide hope that one can stop harming themselves.

Gratz, Kim (2009) Freedom from self -harm: overcoming self -injury with skills from DBT and other treatments,New Harbinger - Review: This book is an excellent resource for anyone who is struggling with self -harm or has a lovedone who engages in self -harm. Includes self -assessment worksheets, guidance for seeking professional help, andinforma on about the most e ec ve therapies and medica ons. Treatments such as dialec cal behavior therapy andacceptance and commitment therapy, the tools in this book can help you cope with your emo ons whenever you feel theurge to self -harm .

Hollander, Michael (2008) Helping teens who cut: Understanding and ending self -injury, Guildford Press - Review: A must have for parents & professionals. A hands on account of how to do Dialec cal Behavioral Therapy. This

was one of the best books I have read on self -injury. The examples, explana ons, ques ons, and informa on was not onlyhelpful, but hopeful.

Self -Harm: The short -term physical and psychological management and secondarypreven on of self -harm in primary and secondary care.

The NICE clinical guideline on self -harm covers:

the care people who harm themselves can expect to receive from healthcare professionals in hospital and out of hospital

the informa on they can expect to receive

what they can expect from treatment

what kinds of services best help people who harm themselves

The guideline does not a empt to explain self -harm or describe the treatment in detail.

Pembroke, Louise (2003) Self -Harm: Perspec ves from personal experience - Chipmunkapublishing - Review:Perhaps the most important book on self -harm ever to come to print , it helps to reduce the mystery and perverseglamour that surrounds this controversial issue. This book a empts to answer the cri cal ques on - why? This collec onof stories, wri en by self -harmers themselves, produces a clearer picture of what self harmers go through - how theythink and react. A must read.

Shapiro, Lawrence, E (2008) Stopping the pain: A workbook for teens who cut & self -injure, Instant Help BooksReview: This comprehensive workbook helps teens who self -injure explore the reasons behind their need to hurtthemselves and sets forth posi ve ways to deal with the issues of stress and control. “Upon advice of my daughter'scounsellor, I purchased this book in order to help with my daughter's treatment It gives teens that cut on themselvestools in which to stop the destruc ve behavior, and use di erent tools in order to deal with life on life's terms.”

Jan Su ondraws on the tes monies of those trapped in the cycle of self -injury, and former self -injurers, as well as the latestresearch and developments. It is a book of hope and healing designed to o er help and support to self -injurers;understanding to the self -injurer's kith and kin; insight to volunteers or professionals whose work brings them intocontact with people who hurt themselves. Jan Su on is a Counsellor and runs SIARIand is also an Associate ofFirstSigns. Autobiography Vega, Vanessa (2007) Comes the darkness, comes the light - a memoir of cu ng, healing and hope - Ama-com - Review: A very honest account.
