Who is this solution designed for?

This cloud BI solution is to be implemented by a technical audience, such as a BI developer orData warehouse architect. A technical person uses this joint environment to set up business

intelligence solutions for their end-user audience which would typically be executives and other

business users. In summary, the finished solution can be used by business users, but a technical

profile is required to set up the environment.

    Why BI in the Cloud?

The solution has a variety of use cases including:

Create analytical sandboxes on demand to optimize response to sudden market changes

Offload expensive processing from overburdened data warehouses and avoid costly

    upgrades

Prototype new proof-of-concept BI applications without purchasing and implementing

    new data center infrastructure

Run full business intelligence and data warehousing for existing cloud applications

    entirely in the cloud.

What are the first steps to using this solution?

It depends upon your knowledge of and current comfort-level with the cloud as well as cloud

and cloud management accounts you may already have.

To learn more about the cloud and cloud management with RightScale, we suggest the

following reading and resources at the RightScale.com website:

    http://www.rightscale.com/info_center/

If you are already familiar with the cloud, or if you just want a quick introduction to cloud BI,

then you may start using the cloud BI solution right away. You need both a cloud account (e.g.,

Amazon EC2, RackSpace, Go2Grid, etc.) and a cloud management account (RightScale). If you do

not already have a cloud account, you may receive a temporary Amazon EC2 cloud account via

RightScale that allows for 10 hours of usage.

    Why RightScale for Cloud Management?

The RightScale Cloud Management Platform provides the following key benefits enjoyed by

thousands of companies that use RightScale every day to run critical business applications in the

    cloud:

Cloud-Ready ServerTemplates Even if you have minimal knowledge of cloud

architectures, you can take advantage of RightScales pre-packaged ServerTemplates to

get up and running on the cloud fast. Available for a wide variety of common application

scenarios, ServerTemplates incorporate best practice design architectures so you can

focus on your own application and trust in the reliability, resiliency, and performance of

    other more standard components.

Managing Deployments Rather than managing individual servers, with the RightScale

Platform you manage entire deployments groups of servers architected to work

together saving you valuable systems administrative time and reducing costly errors.

Automation Across the Deployment Lifecycle From autoscaling to remediation to

automatic configuration, you can achieve a new level of ease in system administration

of production deployments while also providing tools for managing multi-server

    deployments over their entire lifecycle.

Transparency and ControlWith RightScales open architecture, you retain visibility

into all levels of your cloud application. Manage, monitor, test, troubleshoot, and re-

launch applications with total control. You can also store valuable operations runbook

knowledge and break free from the limits of virtual machine images.

Eliminate Lock-in with Cloud Portability Gain the freedom and flexibility to choose

among a variety of development languages, software stacks, data stores, and cloud

providers. Choose the right cloud infrastructure for your unique requirements, whether

that involves security and regulatory compliance, geographic location, special features,

or pricing. Manage and migrate deployments across clouds public or private. With

RightScale, you never get locked in.

Whether you are just getting started and need a simple on-ramp to the cloud or require

support for complex deployments spanning multiple clouds, the RightScale Cloud

Management Platform provides complete automation, thereby reducing the administration

and complexity of managing cloud deployments, yet giving you the flexibility, control, and

    portability you need.

RightScale Basics: Are you new to Amazon Web Services (AWS) and EC2?If so, please read about Amazon Web Services (AWS) to become familiar with some common

terms and definitions before reading the RightScale Basics section. The link is here:

    ServerTemplates and RightScripts

RightScales experience using EC2 to host our own site has led us to develop tools

custom built for AWS. Designing the best tools requires thinking about old concepts in

new ways. For example, we have done away with the old concept of launching images

from a ready-configured state. Instead, we've found that it is far superior to launch bare

instances and configure everything post-launch via code that we call RightScripts. This

allows us to create modular server images that are highly customizable and easily

    replicated.

As a result, RightScale developed ServerTemplates. Along with specifying all of the

normal EC2 stuff to launch an instance (AMI, ssh-key, security group, etc.)

    5/17

    5

ServerTemplates also allow you to designate any number of RightScripts that you want

to run at boot time, upon demand, when decomissioning servers, or even when an

event is triggered. We created RightScripts to make it even easier. RightScripts allow you

to specify packages that you want to install before a script is executed and even allow

you to upload and attach files directly to scripts. The Dashboard automatically

recognizes and allows you to enter values for any variable that is capitalized. These

"variables" are called "Inputs" in the RightScale Dashboard. We provide a convenient

and centralized way to manage Input parameters to all of the RightScripts in a

ServerTemplate. We also make it easy to use runtime values such as local IP's and EC2

    meta-data.

    Quick Start for RightScale

    Setting up your accounts

In order to use the cloud BI environment you need the following accounts:

    1) Cloud management account: Sign up at My.rightscale.comThere are two types:

    a. Trial account: provides both a RightScale account and an Amazon EC2 cloud accountwith 10 hours of cloud usage for evaluation purposes.

    b. Developer account: you associate your own existing cloud account and pay perusage.

    2) Cloud account: Sign up for a cloud account, such as Amazon EC2, Rackspace, or GoGrid.Otherwise, the RightScale Trial account provides you with 10 hours of Amazon EC2

    evaluation usage.

After attaining your cloud account (Amazon EC2, Rackspace, GoGrid, etc.) then you can sign up for your

RightScale account and associate the two accounts.

The following section describes the steps to link your cloud account, using Amazon EC2 as an example,

with your RightScale cloud management solution.

If you select Option 1, then RightScale queries the cloud management platform with your credentials.

Launching the Joint Cloud BI Solution

We will go through the following steps to launch the joint solution:

    1) Design a new Deployment by launching the joint Macro found in the Partners section. TheMacro controls the launching of the Templates. There is one Template for each product

(Jaspersoft, Talend, and Vertica).2) Manage the Deployment and Running all the Templates at once.

Select the Design option at the top of the screen.

Select View All under Design and Macros:

Now select the Partners button because this is where the joint BI Macro resides.

  • 7/29/2019 BI Quickstart Guide

    9/17

    9

If there are many Macros listed, then do a search on Jaspersoft, Talend, and Vertica. Then launch the

Macro with the blue button on the right.

Now there are some options to set. For simplicity, just select Default from the drop-down of the first

two options and then select Run.

You are prompted to give your Deployment a name. Pick one thats easy to remember and descriptive.

  • 7/29/2019 BI Quickstart Guide

    10/17

    10

Now you see the Macro being executed. It is setting up the Templates defined for each of the products.

After selecting OK, now we can manage the Deployment. Go to Manage, Deployments, and View

    All.

Notice that the Deployment you just created appears, and it has 3 red boxes to the right. That means

that the three Templates are available (corresponding to Jaspersoft BI, Talend Data Integration, and

Vertica Analytic Database), but nothing is running yet.

  • 7/29/2019 BI Quickstart Guide

    11/17

    11

After clicking on your Deployments name, now you can start the Templates all at once by clicking on

    Start All.

Notice the yellow arrows under CPU. That means the products have received instructions to boot.

You also see a handy message that lets you know how much this deployment will cost per day:

    Current usage: $0.70/hour ($16.80/day) - 1 m1.small, 1 c1.medium, 1 m1.large

The CPUs green arrows mean that the products are in the middle of the boot process.

  • 7/29/2019 BI Quickstart Guide

    12/17

    12

Once each of the Templates has completed the boot process, you receive a notice by e-mailcorresponding to each launched Template.

And the CPU image shows a new image representing that the Template is running. You also see the

duration of the Template being launched under Runtime. All the Templates should all be running withinabout 8.5 minutes.
