My husband Vance’s family trade has put ink in myblood. He is fourth generation of the fourth estate, printjournalism. And we already bled Red and Black, so ourendeavor into publishing Bulldawg Illustrated has trulybeen a labor of love.

When we created Bulldawg Illustrated nine years agoI never dreamed that it would lead us back to our almamater and a home in Athens nearly full time. We arecoastal kids, right? But now I find my trips “home” to St.Simons shorter and shorter because we don’t want tomiss the Dawgs vs. Kentucky in Stegeman. Or we don’twant to miss our neighborhood progressive Christmasparty down University Drive. Wait how can we skip aTribute to Dan Magill, the greatest bulldog ever, at theClassic Center? (By the way, that is set for January 28.)Allgood is playing at Melting Point and we can’t miss thatnow can we? We need to support our clients that are par-ticipating in the Taste of Athens benefit- oh I’ll comeclean- who wants to skip all that great food?

You get the drift, there are so many reasons to enjoyAthens and we do. There is so much going on all thetime. We love it! So those that know us know that all ourinterests end up in print. Vance felt strongly that weneeded to support winter and spring sports so last yearwe launched BI Athens from January to June to cover be-yond the hedges. We deliver it in print to Athens andOconee, while everyone else can follow along online.

This year, we are adding the Athens flavor to thepublication. We are covering philanthropy, music, cul-ture, the downtown vibe and more. It comes a little eas-ier after two years of getting to know so many of themovers and shakers and their enterprises through ourguide2athens book and website. It is the perfect fit.

You will notice the way to navigate BI Athens is thesports news is on red pages and the Athens entertainmentnews is on black. Of course I know your favorite part ofthe publication will be the photos from all the happen-ings. “You never know who you’ll see in BI,” coined oursports guru Jeff Dantzler years ago. He even admits tolooking at the photos first before delving into the articles.

Our entire team that contributes to Bulldawg Illus-trated at the end of the day is first and foremost com-prised of diehard Dawgs fans. Dantzler spends his daysand nights covering the Bulldogs as a sportscaster on airand has done so for three decades. He lives and dies forthe joy of the Ws. Murray Poole has covered the Dawgsin print for nearly a century, first at The Brunswick Newsand now more for fun than a paycheck for Bulldawg Il-lustrated. Our BI Athens editor, Ryan Scates, is going tobe a “Double Dawg” when he wraps up law school. OurPublic Relations Director Andrew Miller was graduatedfrom UGA. Our sales girls alum Holly Stanfill and Kel-ley Blanton are both super fans. Our Athens delivery fellafor the last four years, Zack Miller is a senior at Georgia.Throw in our interns from Grady and we have a purebred UGA staff.

I hope Bulldawg Illustrated reflects the spirit thatguides us - the enthusiasm and love that we as fans feelfor the Bulldogs we support.

I will let you get to it. Plus I want to get out into thesnow day. My neighbor just skied down University Drive.Never a dull moment in the Classic City!

It’s great to be back in the saddle for anotheryear of Bulldawg Illustrated Athens and a gloriousspring semester in America’s favorite college town.

You may notice some changes to this year’s for-mat of BI Athens, and since we’ve added on-cam-pus distribution for 2011, this may even be the firsttime you have picked up a copy of our paper. Thisyear, BI Athens, BulldawgIllustrated.com andAthens.Guide2s.com are teaming up to bring youcomprehensive coverage of not only the best inspring semester sports, but also the latest and great-est in Athens lifestyle and culture.

Also you will notice some new names and facesin the publication this year as we welcome threenew interns to Bulldawg Illustrated/Guide2Athens.Brittany Biddy, Alana Carithers and Chelsea Swan-heart are respective rockstars in UGA’s Grady Col-lege of Journalism and Mass Communication, andwill join returning sports contributor ChelseaLipocky, who is fresh off an internship with ESPNup in Bristol, Connecticut.

After nearly a month away from Athens, nodoubt many students are itching to get back to theClassic City and all of its glories. Brittany covers theClassic City on New Year’s Eve for those thatpopped back over to celebrate the holiday.

For those of you who maybe overindulged alittle over the break, Alana Carithers takes a lookat the best places to find a healthy meal in Athensto get back in shape for that spring break trip youare probably starting to plan this month.

Be sure to check out Chelsea Lipocky’s profileof the newest Gym Dawg, Lindsey Cheek. TheWatkinsville native just graduated from OconeeCounty High School in December. In order to staywithin the NCAA rules, Cheek trained on her ownuntil high school graduation in order to be readyto compete with the Gym Dawgs in their first meetin Denver that they won on Jan. 8.

Of course I would be remiss not to encourageyou to check out all of the fan photos we have in-cluded in issue one of BI Athens 2011. Be sure toread Chelsea Swanheart’s compilation of fan pro-files on page 14 and see if you have been spotted byone of BI’s photographer’s roaming around town!

After a great start for BI Athens, we are lookingforward to a bigger and better 2011. In our secondyear of publication, we hope to be a meaningfulpart of your Athens experience. If you have anysuggestions, comments, story ideas or events thatyou think we should cover, feel free to contact mepersonally anytime at [email protected].

Here is to a Happy New Year as our coversays. And it couldn’t be off to a better start whichis shown in the photo I took of Trey Thompkinsdunking during the Kentucky win. Speaking of, ifyou haven’t jumped on the Hoop Dawgs band-wagon yet, you better hurry up because it’s fill-ing up fast. Get out and support all our springsemester sports whenever you can. We’ll be look-ing for you. Go Dawgs!

Georgia athletics could be in for a banner winter and spring. On the hardwood, the Bulldogs secured a huge win over Ken-

tucky in the Southeastern Conference opener. As fans of everyschool in the league know, victories over the Wildcats have beenrare through the years and they are tough to come by. Mark Fox isan excellent coach with a lot of talent, led by Trey Thompkins andTravis Leslie. There’s no question that the Bulldogs can contend forthe Southeastern Conference title in the rough and tough East di-vision, which could have five NCAA Tournament teams. ComeMarch, the Dogs could be poised for a run in the dance.

As usual, legendary hall of fame coach Andy Landers has an-other outstanding squad. The Lady Dogs captured their SECopener and upset then No. 10 Kentucky, breaking the ‘Cats 25 gamehome court winning streak. They have a great opportunity to con-tend in the league and receive an invitation to the NCAA Tourna-ment. Georgia has received bids to 27 of the 29 all-timetournaments.

Jack Bauerle has another pair of fantastic swimming teams. The women, with Chelsea Nauta amongst the standouts, couldcontend for the program’s fifth national championship. The menwill be in the running for another top ten finish. Bauerle, headcoach of the 2008 United States Olympic Women’s Swimmingteam, was on the blue ribbon search committee for Georgia’s thenvacant athletic director position and had a big role in the extremelypopular and unifying hire of Greg McGarity.

It’s tough to follow a legend, particularly one who won 10 na-tional championships, including five in a row to close out a phe-nomenal career. Jay Clark, as an ace recruiter, had a huge role inSuzanne Yoculan’s incredible success. With Cassidy McCombamongst the top performers, Georgia’s gymnastics team is bankingon being right back in the thick of the national championship race.

On the links, Kelly Hester’s women’s golf team will be one ofthe SEC’s best. Chris Haack’s men’s team is loaded and a prime con-tender for the national and Southeastern Conference champi-onships.

The same can be said of Georgia’s two tennis teams. Jeff Wallace has a typically strong team, led by defending

NCAA singles champion Chelsea Gullickson. Her southpawbrother Craig – more on the David Perno’s Diamond Dogs to fol-low – will help anchor Georgia’s pitching rotation.

Georgia’s men are stacked. Along with returning standoutsDrake Bernstein and Javier Garrapiz, the Bulldogs welcome in thecountry’s top class with seven newcomers. There’s no program inthe land that has enjoyed the consistency and camaraderie of Geor-gia tennis. The NCAA Championships are in Palo Alto this year, andboth Georgia teams will have a shot at that precious trophy. Thetournament returns home to Athens in 2012.

Wayne Norton has a new track and men’s and women’s teamsthat will be amongst the best in the SEC. At the top of the list is oneof the elite athletes not just at Georgia, but in the world. TorrinLawrence is one of the fastest runners on the planet. NCAA cham-pionships and a berth on the Olympic track team could be in thecards for this phenom.

On the diamond, Georgia’s lineup and defense will be amongstthe best in the SEC, led by electric center fielder Zack Cone. Thebig question mark is on the mound. Gullickson, fellow lefty AlexWood and junior righty Michael Pallazone are the leading candi-dates to hold down the three weekend rotation spots. Hard throw-ing righty Cecil Tanner is a big key to the bullpen. David Perno hasdone great things at Georgia, highlighted by three trips to the Col-lege World Series, two SEC titles and five of the program’s 10 all-timeNCAA tournament berths. It’s so tough in the SEC, especially withthe incredible facility upgrades around the league, but Georgia willcertainly have the type of team capable of making it to the postsea-son. And for the near future, the Bulldogs recruiting class – thefreshmen of the 2012 campaign – has been ranked No. 2 nation-ally.

As a new intern with Bulldawg Illustrated andGuide2Athens, it only took me about two seconds to de-cide what I wanted to write about in my Intern’s Note.Since I will be focusing on life and events in Athens, howcould I not mention downtown and everything it has tooffer?

Fall semester was winding down and my roommatesand I knew we wouldn’t be seeing each other for aboutthree weeks as we all headed home for the holidays. I’mone of the lucky ones who considers my roommates someof my best friends. We then all decided at that fateful mo-ment during finals week that we would be spending NewYears Eve in Athens, together, as we counted down to2011.

As we got out of the car downtown on December 31,2010, I instantly knew it was New Year’s Eve. Like I wouldhave been able to forget. Ladies were dressed in rhinestonesand four-inch heels, while boys were equally suave in Polosand khakis. I was personally donning my L.B.D., or LittleBlack Dress for you more fashion challenged individuals,as I counted down the last ten seconds of 2010 with mybest friends. We all remember where we were as the clockstruck midnight and I can't help but wonder what every-one else was doing at that exact moment.

I’m proud and hope that you feel a hint of jealousy asI celebrated the new year in one of my favorite cities. TheClassic City was so crowded downtown and resembled agame day on steroids. Good thing I don't know anyonebattling claustrophobia. It looked as if the infamous Geor-gia vs. Florida rivalry had taken over Athens as the Battleof the Borders migrated to become a Battle over Broad. Theweather was perfect and the bars had lines like I've neverseen before. The smiles on everyone’s faces as groupswaited to cross busy intersections proved that even thelongest of lines were definitely worth the wait.

It wasn’t just the bars that received all the business, but restaurants and other local hotspots accepted the surgein downtown attendance. Typical Athens restaurants werebeing craved as if they were foreign delicacies while thenight’s festivities were winding down. We waited twentyminutes for a booth at The Grill, but despite that extra wait, the fries and feta dipping sauce have never tasted so good.

There’s nothing else in my life that can quite compareto Athens. The feeling is definitely contagious and the en-ergy is unimaginable. The atmosphere is almost over-whelming if it is your first time driving down MilledgeAvenue or walking around North Campus, making sureto sidestep The Arch, of course. New Year’s Eve in Athenswas just one aspect of the Classic City that I adored.

So I ask you to reflect on where you were at midnighton January 1, 2011. It doesn't matter if you had a NewYear's kiss or even if you spent the night in watching MTVdrop Snooki in a glass ball. As long as you enjoyed your-self then 2011 is bound to be unforgettable.

I know that I wouldn't put myself anywhere else butAthens, and downtown that evening is a mental picturethat I'll never forget. I hope you enjoy the pictures on page13 that I took that night at Magnolia’s and Boar’s Head soyou too can experience Athens like I did. I’m incrediblylucky to have spent New Year’s Eve with amazing people.I was in an amazing city, that I will have the pleasure ofwriting about because life in Athens never disappoints me.

Three night stand at the 40 Watt will be epic

Hello Bulldog Nation, Daniel Peiken here to give you my adviceon live music in Athens, GA. I’ve been taking pictures at Rock Showsin Athens for over 10 years. I’ve seen 1000’s of bands and I’ve taken1,000,000’s of photos. At least 100 of those are worth you seeing soplease go to www.AthensRockShow.com and check out what I'veseen.

The first band that I will be telling ya’ll about is the Drive-ByTruckers (www.DriveByTruckers.com). My first introduction with thisband was on local radio in 2001. I first saw them on stage in 2002and since then I have seen Patterson Hood or Mike Cooley (playingtogether since the ’80s) or the entire band over 100 times. Brad Mor-gan on drums, Shonna Tucker on bass, John Neff on slide guitar, andJay Gonzalez on keyboards. I can hardly wait till the next show. Nomatter where I am, I feel at home whenever I hear the Drive-ByTruckers. Their earlier songs were a little on the dark side of life aboutincest, murder and suicide. Their newer songs are about love, hate,Rock’N’Roll, and the radio, the future, the past and now. They aremore on the Southern Rock side of Alternative Country and Punk.

Next week they are returning to the 40 Watt Club in Athens fortheir Annual 3 Night Stand / Homecoming / Nuci’s Space BenefitWeekend. January 13, 14 & 15 the 40 Watt is gonna be filled stand-ing room only with good and kind folks like you and me.

Night 1 is the official Go-Go Boots World Premier with the 2ndSons opening the show. DBT’s new album is called the Go-Go Bootsand this night should be full of new songs and lots of fun. Tickets arestill available for this night only so go to Schoolkids Records and getyours or charge by phone at 706.353.1666.

Night 2 Henry Barbe (www.MySpace.com/HenryBarbe) opens theshow and then Don Chambers & GOAT (DonChambersMusic.com)will get us rocking. Don sings songs from the swamp and the heart, gnarly voiced and well dressed, he’s spooky cool too. Barbe’s fatherplays on Saturday.

Night 3 The Nuci’s Space Camp Amped Band opens the show forus and they are not to be missed. These kids have had the benefit ofNuci’s Space in their lives and have become very talented little guysand gals. David Barbe and the Quickhooks (www.DavidBarbe.band-camp.com) will blow us away before the Truckers do. He’s one ofAthens top producers and his band is made of Athens best musicians. You can get into a zone when 4 guitars are blaring at you in unison.

Huge win for Fox’s teamat Stegeman against Cats

Don’t look now, but Mark Fox and the Georgia Men’s Bas-ketball team is the early class of the SEC East in 2011. With aconference-opening win over Kentucky, the Dawgs haveclaimed their first nine-game winning streak since the famous1982-1983 season that ended in the Final Four. Further, theDawgs’ nine game win streak is the best in the SEC so far thisseason.

Through non-conference play, the Dawgs posted an 11-2mark, which is the best start for the team since 2002. Consider-ing both losses came to opponents who went on to be ranked atthe beginning of conference play, Georgia looks to be a seriouscontender for the SEC East title.

At preseason media days Georgia was picked by conferencemedia to finish third in the SEC East, however some erraticplay across the division may have some pundits changing theirtone regarding the Dawgs. Florida, the preseason favorite towin the conference, has dropped contests to UCF and lowlyJacksonville State in non-conference play. Tennessee hasdropped contests to Oakland, Charlotte and College ofCharleston but has also shown an ability to win the big gamewith victories over Memphis and Pittsburgh. With a big winover Kentucky under their belt, the Hoop Dawgs are sittingpretty as SEC play begins.

Of course, one of the biggest factors in SEC basketball is araucous home court advantage. Georgia basketball fans are liv-ing up to the reputation earned in the 2009-2010 season whenthe Dawgs won five games inside a rowdy Stegeman Coliseum. At the Kentucky game the student sections were packed andthe front row was filled with some of the most outrageousgameday outfits in the SEC. “Rocky”, a gorilla, a guy in a pinkspeedo and an overgrown elf joined the obligatory Green, Blue,Pink, and Orange men in the front row.

But the Dawgs won’t have the luxury of playing all confer-ence games inside the friendly and historic Stegeman Coliseum. One of the biggest weaknesses from last year’s squad was an in-ability to win games on the road. After posting wins in St.Louis, Georgia Tech and Mercer’s respective gymnasiums, thisyear’s team is providing plenty of reason to believe it can com-pete across the SEC.

Mark Fox and the Dawgs take their 12-2 record on the roadat Vanderbilt (1/12) and Ole Miss (1/15) before returning homefor a three game homestand that brings Tennessee, (1/18),Miss. St. (1/22) and Florida (1/25) to historic Stegeman Coli-seum for a showdown with the Red and Black.

Healthy options to staytrue to 2011 resolutions

It’s that time of year again- that time of year that we all buckle down andmake resolutions to change ourselves for the better in the face of the NewYear. Many people resolve to lead a healthier lifestyle by eating better, but thiscommon resolution often runs into a snag- how does one eat healthy at arestaurant? Luckily, some of Athens’ favorite dining spots offer several whole-some and delicious options for the calorie- conscious New Year’s resolutiondiner.

Farm 255 This unique Athens establishment offers everything a health- conscious

diner could ask for in a restaurant: all food served is from local organic farms, and all meat is local, antibiotic free, and pasture- raised. The colorful, seasonalmenu offers a variety of delicious meal combinations that will keep even themost health- conscious diner on their toes. The winter dinner menu featuresunique sandwiches, a fresh shrimp and grits plate, and a vegetable entréeplate that changes daily. They offer several soups and a (literally) farm freshsalad as starters! The brunch menu provides an extensive blend of meals thatinclude fresh eggs, homemade granola, and the unique “Brunch Burger.”Farm 255 offers New Year’s resolution makers plentiful options to enjoy eat-ing healthy.

BarberitosKnown for it’s made – to – order, quick serve burrito, Barberitos’ philoso-

phy of fresh produce is perfect for the healthy- eater on the run. Their colorfulproduce arrives daily, making every bite crisp and fresh. All ingredients arefree of added fats and preservatives, so each item is healthy. The menu offersdiners burritos, tacos, salads, and quesadillas. An especially fantastic part ofthe menu is the “7 under 7” options. These burritos, tacos, and salads offerdelicious meal choices that are less than 7 grams of fat. These meals such asthe “Mini Chicken Burrito” still have all the flavor of the regular menu items, but with fewer grams of fat. Often a small side salad is substituted for chips- itstill gives you the crunch, but with a fraction of the calories.

Amici Italian Café This pizzeria and bar’s slogan “Fresh ingredients plus fun times” sums up

the attraction of this Athens area staple. Set in the heart of downtown, Amicioffers a wide variety of pizzas, calzones, and other Italian dishes. At Amici, healthy eaters can indulge while still sticking to their resolutions. Try order-ing pizzas with vegetable toppings, such as the gourmet traditional “Garde-nia” pizza, which is topped with red onion, green pepper, mushroom, dicedtomatoes, and pepperoncini’s. Choosing pizza with more vegetables keepsdown the amount of saturated fat in your meal, making it healthier . Anotheroption is one of Amici’s delicious salads, such as the “Bistro Salad” whichcombines a unique blend of vegetables with vinaigrette dressing over freshRomaine lettuce. Order dressing on the side, because you will end up usingless overall, and consume fewer calories.

The Gym Dawgs welcome a new member to their team, but she has been partof the UGA family her whole life. Lindsey Cheek was born and raised in Athens,Georgia, and recently graduated from Oconee County High School. She has beeninvolved in gymnastics since she was four. Now she has taken her athletic careerto UGA, and has been practicing with the team for the past month. I met her be-fore practice to talk to her about how life as a Gym Dawg has been so far.

So Lindsey, what has the transition from high school been like?I thought it was going to be a tough transition from high school, but all the

girls have really made it easy on me. Every little thing I have had a questionabout, they have been there to answer it, and have been really supportive. Theyhave helped me so much with this transition, and I am really happy that they havebeen here to help me.

What is your major?Psychology, but an intention of pre-med.

That sounds really challenging. Are you nervous about your classes?Yes, I am so nervous about class. I have been setting out the days, and what I

need to do. I feel like I am going to get lost!

Do you have any rituals or superstitions?I don’t really have any rituals before meets or anything.

What is your favorite song right now?Katy Perry’s Firework. That gets me pumped!

What motivated you to come to Georgia? Its just been my dream, I have been coming to gymnastics meets all my life,

and that’s all I have ever wanted to do is come to Georgia and be a college athletehere.

Where is your favorite place to eat in town?Umm…La Fiesta. I love Mexican food.

What is your biggest pet peeve? This sounds weird, but when I am in a middle split, I hate it when people

touch my feet! I can’t stand it!

Is there anything you like to do or eat that you don’t get to have when you aretraining?

Ha, I am never not training! I am training all the time.

Have you ever played another sport?I played T-ball when I was little. I was okay. I was better at gymnastics, so I

stopped T-ball and continued gymnastics.

Are you glad you are so close to home, or do you wish you went farther awayfor school?

I don’t really know if I could have handled going far away. Just getting out ofthe house is enough for me.

You said you have been coming to gym meets here for a long time. What isyour earliest memory of UGA?

Probably coming and watching Kim Arnold. I was probably six, and justcoming and watching them…they rocked the house. They were great. I just re-member that as my first experience.
