Welcome

Most prospective parents come to us through personal recommendation but people often say that they instinctively know if a school feels right and this can only be gained by a personal visit.

We hope that this prospectus gives you a snapshot of what we can offer your daughter at Brighton and Hove and that you will take the opportunity to find out for yourself what makes our community so special.

We passionately believe at Brighton and Hove that our role is to create a spark in our pupils so that they develop their natural curiosity into a life-long love of learning. We want our pupils to be aspirational for themselves and to understand that through hard work, perseverance and focus they will achieve success. Our community is based on creating opportunities for learning in its widest sense and for girls to work collaboratively and with purpose. While our approach is very much a holistic one, we unashamedly put academics at the core. Girls are given the space and freedom to take risks and make their own decisions and mistakes.

Our school reflects the best of Brighton and Hove’s vibrant and diverse community. We are at the heart of the city with a growing network of transport links. As an all-through school our girls from Year 6 transfer seamlessly to the Senior School. Through shared events and activities there is a close liaison between the two schools so that girls are very well prepared for the next stage in their learning. We also belong to the wider family of the Girls’ Day School Trust – one of the UK’s largest charities and innovators in girls’ education – who are focused on investing in the best staff and developing quality facilities and resources for educating girls.

Giving responsibility to a school for the care of your daughter can seem like a daunting prospect as you want her to be nurtured and cared for as an extension of your family values. At Brighton and Hove we believe the relationship between the school and home underpins everything we do and we know that the trust built between us helps to create confidence and safety for your daughter. We also understand that trust relies on good communication and we strive always to develop our links with parents. We are proactive about nurturing positive relationships and developing collaboration and empathy between the girls.

Growing and thriving

We believe that success is determined by a positive attitude and this process begins from age three in our pre-school. We make girls feel safe and secure from which they can explore and investigate and build on their natural curiosity. Encouragement and opportunity develop confidence, independence and resilience.

The transition to our Reception class is smooth and can build on the skills and confidence developed in the pre-school. The pre-school is at the heart of the school and enables the girls to benefit from extensive facilities, qualified staff and being part of the wider BHHS community.

Individuals and community

The best schools are vibrant communities in which children feel secure and valued. At Brighton and Hove your daughter will be valued as an individual within a supportive and tolerant community. We believe that a girls-only education brings out the best in our girls, offering them the chance to develop at their own pace, building a strong sense of who they are, what they have achieved and eager to face new challenges with confidence.

As parents we want to give our children the best education we can, one that offers them opportunities and experiences that will be memorable and challenge them to be the best they can be. Our inclusive approach enables girls to be involved, to develop a rounded platform from which they can specialise later while encouraging an aspirational attitude supported by a positive work ethic. We recognise that some girls will need additional support to get the most from the curriculum and others will need challenge to reach their potential but our emphasis on individuals enables us to ensure that the needs of all our girls are met.

The leadership has made an excellent start in identifying areas for improvement and changes are being implemented rapidly.

ISI report

We value the best of traditional values such as good manners and social responsibility. At the same time we confidently embrace the future through positive attitudes and new technology as we prepare girls for an ever changing and often challenging society. We are continually updating our facilities to reflect the demands of the modern curriculum and offer the very best value for money.

Our position in the heart of the city is incomparable, allowing girls to participate in the life of community as well as being well served by extensive public transport links.

Over two thirds of Senior School students come to school by bus, train or walk. Many Junior School girls walk, scoot or cycle to Radinden Manor Road. There is ample parking close to the Junior School for easy drop off and pick ups. We offer a link bus between the Junior and Senior sites, the minibus is normally available to girls from Year 3 to 13.

It is possible to book weekly, set days or just one way; we request that these are booked in advance on a half-termly basis.

Places are offered on a first come, first served basis with priority for those living outside Brighton & Hove, those who have used the service in the current year, and to those committing to the full week.
