Early Years

The Early Years are an integral part of the BHHS community. Both the Flying Start Nursery and the Reception Class benefit from the extensive facilities and the educational focus of the school environment. We pride ourselves in providing a nurturing, caring environment that promotes high levels of independence in learning and well being, something that was recognised by our recent ISI inspection in which they judged the Early Years to be OUTSTANDING in all areas.

Our purpose-built facilities provide an ideal environment for learning and discovery. The girls enjoy the opportunity of using the well equipped play areas, adventure trails/gardens, hall/gym, library, music and languages room. The specialist music and language teachers also provide exciting opportunities for the girls in the Early Years.

We embrace the Early Years Foundation Stage principles in looking at the child as unique, helping each one to develop positive relationships within a stimulating, secure and varied environment that promotes learning and development.

The EYFS framework covers six areas of learning:

Personal, Social and Emotional Development Communication, Language and Literacy

Expressive Arts and DesignMathematics

Understanding of the WorldPhysical Development

We passionately believe that our unique girl-focused environment enables us to enrich and enhance the EYFS curriculum.

We understand the importance of relationships in the early years setting. Our staff are caring, dedicated and fun! They aim to make your daughter’s first experience a positive platform from which she can blossom. We value the input of parents and regard the relationship between home and school as an essential key to a child’s happiness.

Girls join our Nursery from the age of three. The school accepts Government funded nursery vouchers and, as part of the GDST family, also accepts tax credits through a number of registered providers. The transition to our reception takes place from the September before the fifth birthday. Girls from the Nursery have an automatic place into the Reception Class and we pride ourselves on providing a strong preparation and a smooth transition to this important stage. Equally we are delighted to welcome girls who have been at other local nurseries and pre-schools.

The Nursery is open between 8:30 – 3:15 p.m. term time only. Before and After School Care is also available from 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Holiday clubs are also available by other providers at an additional cost.

A healthy nutritional lunch (cooked on our premises) and drinks/snacks are provided.

We passionately believe that the Early Years at BHHS provides a wonderful start to a girl’s educational journey.
