I have known Mathoorjisince 1983 when I joined the‘Bhavan’s Journal’ as AssociateEditor. Mathoorji was then inLondon and had alreadyestablished his reputation as aninstitution-builder and theunofficial cultural ambassador ofIndia in England. He built up theBhavan brick by brick from 1972,when he first went there, sparingno effort or time. By 1995, whenhe left for India for good, theBhavan had grown like theBanyan tree of Adayar Tree inChennai, both in respect ofgrandeur and reputation world-wide. The manner in which theBhavan moved from 35, GreatRussell St., a one – roomtenement, to Castletown Road inWest Kensington in 1978, to itsown premises with an area of14,600 sq. ft, is a saga of labourand achievement worth knowingand remembering by present andfuture generations. ‘Mathoor inBritain’ is the record of the workof a great and good man in theservice of Indian Culture.

What Dr. S. Radhakrishnandid for Hindu religion andphilosophy in England,Mathoorji did for Indian Culture, which includes not only religionand philosophy but literature and

V. SIVARAMAKRISHNAN’S PRAISEthe fine arts. He did not go toEngland with the halo of anacademician. His backgroundwas different fully equipped withthe knowledge of the Vedic, itihasic and the Puranic loreacquired in the traditional way, adecade of experience in KannadaJournalism, with translations intoKannada, literary works, fictionand non-fiction, from Tamil andHindi to his credit, and above all, well –versed in Gandhianthought. Deeply interested in thetheatre and, with a talent foracting Mathoorji establisheddirect contacts with people, through his discourses, plays andT.V. Programmes. This was thesecret of his success in England,as a one-man institution.

As the Director of theBhavan’s Bangalore Kendra, after his return from the U.K.Mathoorji, through his T.V.programmes, publications, andefforts at establishing new districtcentres of the Bhavan, hasbecome an household word inKarnataka. He deserves muchgreater honour than that has comehis way so far.

May he live long andcontinue with his mission withunrelenting zeal!
