Synopsis

The play is about Bhagat Singh and Chandrasekhar Azad, who are in heaven and as per heavenly

rules undisturbed by the happenings of earth to enjoy their heavenly status. However, both Bhagat

and Azad being ardent patriots are not happy. So in 2011, Lord almighty allows both of them to visit

Bharat in their disguised former selves.

Bhagat and Azad had high expectation from the work done in years after independence; however

they are shocked to know from Chitragupta that not only has the country been divided into many

parts during independence but also faced with never ending issues and problems.

On earth, with the help of Chitragupta, they pose as NGO workers and meet the common man, the

leaders, the youth, the businesspeople, and get disappointed at the dismal standards of all of them

and the apathy they show towards nation and other citizens.

Bhagat Singh is more agitated at the lack of enthusiasm among the youth regarding problems of

motherland. They make a final visit to a Indian village. And they find hope. What is it that these great

revolutionary see? Is it really a ray of hope or a false beacon? Will these great soul be satisfied about

the future of their beloved maa Bharti?

The play deals with the same.

(Note: The number of dialogues in the script has a scope for increase, kept short for the simplicity of

judging)



Scene 1

(Bhagat singh and Chandrashekhar Azad taking a walk in heaven)

B: Azad bhai, the lord has kept us here despite our repeated pleas to be sent in service of our

beloved motherland.

A: Bhagat, my eyes are sore in anticipation of seeing my motherland, all these heavenly pleasures

are nothing before a mere sight of my mother Bharati, but the supreme one has even kept us away

from any news of Bharat.

B: Azad bhai, hamare desh wale kisi se kum thode hain, ab tak to Bharat phir se sone ki chididya ban

chooka hoga. The sacrifices made by us will now be bearing fruits. Aur haan, kahin na kahin is tarraki

mein hamare log hame to yad karte hi honge.

A: Bhagat, bhagwan ne hume swarg ke aise tal mein rakha hai ki hum apne desh se aaye kisi punya

atma se mil bhi nahin paye, Netaji Bose aur Ashfaq bhi yehi baat kar rahe the. But the lord has said

that sacrifices made by us have made us eligible for 100 years in heaven, without being disturbed.

B: agar pata hota ki kurbani de kar bhi bhagwan ki jail mein hi jaana hai to kuch paap bhi kar leta,

kam se kam itna apni maa se to door nahi rehna padta.

( a heavenly voice speak)

Voice of lord: Bhagat aur azad, I think you are praising me a lot nowadays.

B: Lord, your greatness is beyond praise, though I never praised or believed in you on earth.

VOL: My children, I have kept you from your land enough, in heaven one has to be happy but you

seem lost in the memories and worries of your Bharat. It’s time for you to go and visit your nation at

2011.

A: Jai ho bajrangbali

B: Dhanyawad waheguru, aakhir apne hamari mannat sun hi li

VOL: You will have one week to visit Bharat, in your earthly body form, of course with some disguise

to hide your true identity.

A: Bajrangbali, jaise apki aagya.

VOL: aur saath hi Dharti ke safar tak Chitragupta apko aur jankari denge.

B: Jai maa bharti, wahe guru ki fateh

A: Jai hind, jai bajrang bali



Scene 2

(New Delhi, capital city of Bharat, a busy market place)

B: Azad bhai, yeh chitraguptaji ne kya bataya. Azadi ke baad Bharat ke tukde ho gaye. Yeh Pakistan,

Bangladesh, Burma doosre desh hain. Mohammaed ali Jinnah ne kaha ki hinduon ke ssath musalmannahi reh sakte. Ashfaq ki rooh tadap uthegi yeh dekh kar.

A: Bhagat, dekhna to yeh hai ki apna desh bacha kya hai. Today maximum population is ours, most

illiterates are in our country, we have largest number of poor people. How can this happen, I am not

able to see the prosperity and happiness of our years of independence.

(An accident takes place and a old pedestrian is hit by a speeding Mercedes, lies bleeding on the

road, Bhagat and Azad run to the spot, the driver of the car comes out )

Driver: you stupid old man, are you blind, don’t you see when you are walking, you have put a dent

in my bonnet, the repair costs more than your life.

(Bhagat and Azad, rush to help the bleeding man)

B: Hey, are you insane, the man is wounded and you are worried about car.

(no one pays attention and the vehicles behind the Mercedes start honking)

Driver: you mind your own business, you don’t know who I am?

(the police person comes forward)

Police: what is happening , oh my god the man is hurt, hello hello, need a ambulance urgently at

ISBT. Whose car is this.

Driver: Mine sir,

Police: you are going down, how you can drive carelessly.

B: Sir, he is at fault, we can testify.

Driver(in a quiet voice): Sir please, don’t make it a case, here I have only 10000, but I will pay 40000

more.

P: Okay, okay..first we will get the man to hospital and you driver, I have noted your car number. You

will have to appear when I call

(Driver goes away)

A: Saheb, yeh kya kar rahein hai aap. He shuld be arrested.

P: hoonnnnn…you mind your business, I am in charge here. Get to your work.

(all others including injured man leave)

B: Chalo Azad bhai, kam se kam us bande ki jaan to bachi.



Scene 3

( Bhagat and Azad are at IIM A convocation)

B: Azad bhai, Chitragupta has told us that this is the place where most learned and intelligent minds

of our country study. No longer have our people had to depend on foreign education.

A: Bhagat, I believe that here for the first time after we came to Bharat, will we see the glimpse of

hope. And don’t forget that Chitragupta has said that we are from a NGO, to introduce ourselves.

( Bhagat and Azad approach the student who held the gold medal in the batch)

B: So young man, Bharat, what are your plans now, after proving best among the best.

Bharat: Thank you sir, well I am joining Goldman Sachs in USA next month and then planning to take

citizenship in another 4 years.

A: What, you are going to work and live in America.

Bharat(surprised): well yes, so will half of the other students. The only ones left here are those who

could not beat us to get those international offers. I will be getting 1 lac US dollars, you know its

equal to 50 lac indian rupees. Who wants to live here.

A: is this your love for the nation. You got education at the best institute of Bharat and now you are

gonna work for a foreign firm and country for what, 50 lacs. And you want to give up your country.

Do you know what sacrifices were made by the countrymen to gain freedom.

Bharat: Oh my goodness, please be practical. You might be of old school, who cares what thosepeople did and I don’t want to live in a country where there are no proper roads, security facilities. I

have earned my way up and I am gonna live it large. Don’t care about Bharat, I have my own issues.

B: Bharat, you care about Bharat or not but bharat will always care for you. May god bless you in

your endeavours.

(Bharat leaves)

B: Azad bhai, it seems nothing is going on well in the country today. You had high hopes form these

young brains, but they are the first ones to leave the country, for what some pieces of gold and a life

of comfort.

A: You are right Bhagat, I came looking for a Netaji who can turn down any position and work for

country, I got gold diggers.



Scene 4

(Indian parliament)

B: Azad bhai, yeh central assembly ko hi is desh ka bhavishya likhne ki jagah bana liya. 80 saal pehle

yahan par Sukhdev ke saath un behron ke kaan khole the. Ab dekhte hain ki Azad hind ke neta kyakar rahein hain.

A: Bhagat..ummed karte hain ki in netaon mein waise hi desh bhakti aur imandari bhari hogi jaise

hamare samay ke satyagrahiyo mein thi. Come, chitragupta has got an appointment for us with Mr.

Lal Babu, a senior leader.

(Bhagat and Azad pass into the chamber of MP)

LB: aaiye Bhagat aur azad ji, mein apka hi intezar kar raha tha. Kya naam hain apke, lagta hai kafi deh

premi family hai apki warna kaun raktha hai aise purine naam aajkal.

B: Namaste sir, aisa kuyn bolte hai sir, naam to Hindustani hi hain.

LB: haha..mein to aise hi keh raha tha. To kaun jaat se hain aap.

A: Jaat, hum dono to Hindustani jaat se hain aur aap.

LB: accha accha, aaj kal OBC, SC Hindustani bhi lagate hain surname mein . chaliye bataiye ki kya

kaam hai apke, NGO wale hain.

A: sir, we wanted to put a plea for the Bhopla gas victims, they are still wandering for justice.

LB: Dekhiye sarkar, that issue is dead and closed, I cannot do anything in that. And let me tell you,

bringing up that case wil only damage the growth process. Lagta hai apko aapka hissa nahi mila.

Isliye aap is purine murde ko tazza kar rahein hain.

B: But sir, you are the representative of people, how can you allow such injustice.

LB: You have to understand, I have a lot on my hands, I am being investigated by CBI for telecom

case, I am criticized for terrorist attacks in the country, I have already pushed minority quota, quota

within quota, I have stalled the punishment of terrorist to avoid unrest. What else you want, now I

am meeting everyone without taking my cut, I have decreased my cut in all government spending

and others. I am also working for all castes.

A (shocked): is this the leader who claims to be inspired by indian freedom struggle. Did Netaji

subhas raised the slogan for Azad hind to be ruled by you.

LB: Yeh sab kitabi batein hain, sach to yeh hai ki in baton par chal kar kuch nahi milta. We don’t want

freedom fighters, we are a free country, we want stable leadership which I and my party give, under

the leadership of Mr. Aahru, the great grandson of first PM of country. These problems of the

country and common man will be there forever, now if you excuse me.

B: Azad bhai, Delhi abhi door hai.



Scene 5

(Office of a big Indian company)

B: Azad bhai, azad Hindustan mein itna kuch dekhna padega, yeh kabhi nahi socha tha.

A: Bhagat, isshi ka naam zindagi hai. Ladai kabhi khahatm nahi hoti. Now see, there are many

companies which have come up after independence and are employing millions of Indians, making

good name for Bharat. Lets meet Ms. Chawla, Chitragupta have told me that she is one of the top

businessperson in the country.

(Enters the office)

Ms. Chawla: Welcome Mr. Bhagat and Azad, how do you do?

B: Dhanyawad Ms. Chawla, we are fine.

Ms.C: If its in relation to any donation, please contact my secretary, I will call her right away.

A: No No Ms. C, its in relation to your new plant coming at Chungur. The locals have been thrown

out of their land by the government and without proper compensation.

Ms. C: Look, we are a huge company and have a lot of other important matters at hand. We are

doing this country a great service by starting the plant there, even if some locals are displaced, it

does not matter. What matters is greater good.

B: But, the number of people is more than 4000. And they are not given anything by government;

they have been on the land for hundreds of years.

Ms C: Oh don’t give me that emotional melodrama. And its not our headache how the government

gets land for us, we have paid enough, both legally and illegally. Business exist for profits, not for

solving these petty problems of common man. I believe the matter is closed.

A: of course Ms, you are all powerful. And we believed that business exist because people exist.

(Leaves office)

B: Azad bhai, mere se ab maa Bharti ki halat aur nahi dekhi jati. Wapas chaliye aur iswar se boliye ki

ya to hume apni mitti par janam de taki ek aur inquilab khada karein ya phir hamari aatma ka hiastitva mita de.

A: Sahi keh rahe ho Bhagat, greedy people, corrupt officers,ministers, intellectually bankrupt youth,

no infra, terror, poverty, the situation is no different from British slavery. But first lets take a look at

our villages, Gandhi has said that true India lives in villages.

B: Jaisa aap kahein,



Scene 6

(Village, people are coming back after a funeral)

B: Namaste ji, kya hua hai.

Passerby: It was the funeral of Sanjay Kumar, Lance Naik, army. He fell battling terrorists at border.

He was the only earning member of the family. There is his father.

(a man holding the tricolour close to his chest)

A: Shaidon ki chitaon par lagenge har baras mele, watan par mitne walon ka yahi baki nishan hoga.

Father(with moist eyes): Mita nahi hai sahib, amar hua hai. He has repaid the debt of this soil with

his blood.

B: let me touch my forehead with the soil of the feet of father of a martyr.

F(with a lump in the throat): abhi to mera ek aur beta hai aur mein khud hoon. Meri dharti ke liye

mera jiwan, mera parivar kuch bhi nahi hai, sab kurban hai. Accha ab chalta hoon, jakar Sanjay ki

maa ko bhi sambhalna hai. Kehti hai ki Sanjay holi par aayega, uske liye phone kar rahi hai. Par

Sanjay to bahut door hai.

( the father walks away)

A: Bhagat, aise shiddat dekh kar to apna waqt yad aa gaya. Aur tum keh rahe ho ki inquilab nahi hai.

Dekh ke aise baapo ko, mera to sahas hunkar le raha hai.

B: No words for this courage. He is more enthusiastic than I was at gallows.

(they walk further and move into a old house)

B: Nmaste

Young man: Nmaste, ji kahiye

A: We are from the NGO, had a call regarding needy student. You are.

YM: ji I am Bhagat. And this is my younger brother Azad.

(Bhagat and Azad look at each other, surprised)

YM1: Sir, the needy students are some of the school students, sons and daughters of landless

labourers, whose parents are finding it difficult to school them.

B: We will forward your request to our organization an they will help. What do you do?

YM1: sir, I am preparing for higher secondary exams, working hard, I want to get BCom at Delhi

University.

A: but the marks required are very high. Do you have quota or something?

YM1: No sir, I don’t need one. I will do it on my own, I don’t believe in caste so no belief in quota.



B: And then an MBA from IIM and Europe and USA.

YM1: MBA yes but foreign no, this is my country sir, how can I leave it. My father named me after

great freedom fighter. I cannot let my name down.

A: But what has the country given you, your policeman father died battling Maoists, his salary hasbeen stopped. You are asked bribes; why not get out when you are qualified.

YM1: Sir, you don’t leave your mother if she is sick and weak. These people are hurting my

motherland, I will fight my way up and I will fight further. I will honor my fathers memory, my

motherland and the spirit of martyrs is with me.

B: you are talking bookish.

YM1: Yes sir, and I believe hundred percent in it. Bharat is with me, Bhagat is with me and Sahid

Azad is with me. Whenver I am down, I look at the portraits of these revolutionaries. Come what

may sir, I will fight. I will make my younger brother an army officer. I will help other children of my

village. I know my motherland is with me.

Sir, I will make my own village so developed that the foreigners come here. Either I will live to see it,

or will see it thorough the eyes of my countrymen, but I will make it happen.

A: Agar irade ho bulnand aasman se to kya rasta rokenge yeh zarre tera.

B: Aaag inquilab ki lag jaye jis dil mein, woh to na rukne wala sailab hai.

A: son, blessed is your mother and father who gave you these values.

B: Maa Bhaarti jiski prerna ho, uski taqat doguni ho jati hai.

(Azad and Bhagat leaves chanting jai hind, jai bharat, YM1 goes to study)



Scene 7

(Heaven)

VOL: so Bhagat aur Azad kaisa laga Bharat ka safar.

B and A: Sarfaroshi kii tamannaa ab hamaare dil mein haiDekhnaa hai zor kitnaa baazu-e-qaatil mein hai

Ek se karataa nahin kyon doosaraa kuchh baat-cheet

Dekhtaa hun main jise woh chup teri mehfil mein hai

Aye shaheed-e-mulk-o-millat main tere oopar nisaar

Ab teri himmat ka charchaa gair kii mehfil mein hai

Sarfaroshi kii tamannaa ab hamaare dil mein hai

Waqt aane de bataa denge tujhe aye aasamaan

VOL: No one can match the power of a martyr.

B: Wahe guru, we thought that our country cannot be saved but how wrong we are. Bharat does not

need a new Azad aur Bhagat, there is a Bismil, Ashfaq, Lalaji, Netaji in every youth of the nation. I

salute that young man and millions like him who are fighting for maa Bharti. Himmat hamesha

talwar aur maidan e jung mein nahi hoti, kabhi kabhi himmat kabhi na haar manne ke aur ladte

rehne ke zazbe mein hoti hai.

A: these sparks will burn the evils of corruption, terror, inhumanity, inequality forever from the land

of maa bharti. Na samjhon in masalon ko kam ya chotta, ke karne ko tabah lanka bajrang ki pooch hi

kafi hai.

Jannat ke aaramon se teri mitti ka ek zarra accha maa, jo aise saputon, aise betiyon, aise maa aur

pitaon ko janam deti hai.

Bajrangbali, kuch baat hai ki hasti mit ti nahi hamari , barson raha hai dushman daure zaman hamara

Saare jahan se accha Hindustan hamara.
